Oregon Trail 3rd Edition The Learning Company, Inc. 1997

This game hearkens back to the days of the first Oregon Trail, meaning that instead of tons of options that made up Oregon Trail 2, there are significantly less in this installment. There is only one place you can go to (besides the fact you can stop anywhere), which is Oregon City. You can also only have five or so people in your group. You can hunt, and you can fish, which is a new gameplay element. You can also go down the Dalles River in a first-person view (along with floating across rivers.). Gameplay still centers on finding your way across the United States, beginning in Independence, Missouri, after choosing traveling companions, forming a party, outfitting the group, and joining a wagon train. Possible partners include occupations such as blacksmiths, farmers, nurses, midwives, merchants, artists, prospectors and more, and careful consideration must be given to the tools, weapons, clothing, medicine and general supplies bought before the trip. Morale, pace, rations and safety, as well as the ability to catch game and find edible plants along the way are important aspects of surviving The Oregon Trail. More than 100 "real-life" events can be encountered during the westward journey, including broken wagon wheels or axles, illnesses, severe weather, buffalo stampedes, trading posts, landmarks, nefarious individuals, and so forth. The objective of the game is to reach Oregon City in about five to six months of trail time, with the reward commensurate to the amount of luck, skill and time it took to complete the trip. The three CD-set special collector's edition includes a fairly thick hardbound Adventure Journal with blank pages and a "Time To Hit The Trail" wristwatch in the straw-filled box.
