Ultra Resort Keroncuel [J] Toshiba-EMI Ltd. 1997

This is a strange surreal Japanese adventure game featuring 3D animated frog characters. It was made with Macromedia. It's an exploration-oriented FMV adventure game. The player is transported to a fantastic space resort and given free rein to explore and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. There is only a light story and some gentle puzzles; the focus is on exploration and relaxation instead of problem-solving. In this way it's similar to contemporaries like Saru Brunei's Jungle Park or more modern walking simulators such as Proteus. It's played from a first-person perspective and presented as a series of still images and FMVs; it plays similarly to other Myst-style adventure games. Its fantastical architecture and CG artwork draw from contemporary postmodern arts movements including neo-futurism, superflat, and other Y2K-era art. The art direction, by artist Katsuki Tanaka and multimedia production company Media Craft, can be compared to contemporary work by multimedia artist Osamu Sato. The music, by house producer Soichi Terada, comes a few years before he would become better known in games for his work on Sony's Ape Escape series.
