Squadron 42 Chris Roberts, Foundry 42 / Cloud Imperium Games 2024

Early Access Release Date: TBA Initially a part of Star Citizen, Squadron 42 will now be a standalone FPS game or as an add-on for Star Citizen itself. It has a singleplayer offline campaign, in which the player-controlled character joins an elite squadron of star fighters. It features characters played by high-profile actors including Gary Oldman, Mark Hamill, Gillian Anderson, Andy Serkis, John Rhys-Davies, Mark Strong, and Ben Mendelsohn, among others. The titular Squadron takes some features after French Foreign Legion – it is an elite force, tasked with the toughest jobs, and joining its ranks is considered a great honor. This mode offers a classic campaign, like in Wing Commander, with extensive narrative, carefully designed missions and battles, and interesting non-player characters voiced by famous actors. It is noteworthy that they invested in their own motion capture studio, which they used extensively, mainly for the purpose of Squadron 42 story campaign. With no loading breaks, you can zoom in a spaceship to a station and be in an FPS level. This smooth transition from space to detailed interiors is an important part, and lets you both fly ships and travel on foot. The game's levels are more like multiplayer maps than linear mazes that the player is funnelled through. There's several different entry points, some stealthy, some noisy. Every level will offer multiple ways to enter, exit, and complete objectives. If you cause a ruckus, enemies will call in reinforcements, but they won’t magically appear from a 'monster closet'. They'll be nearby, in ships, and will fly in to help. But if you manage to sneak onto the base quietly, you might be able to take over its AA guns and blast that backup out of the sky, leaving the base helpless as you begin your assault. It will take place in a small area of Star Citizen’s overall galaxy - but that's 'small' in a galactic sense. It's a massive chunk of space, and completely open. You'll be able to fly freely between stations and star systems, pursuing both the main story and secondary, optional missions. It also offers cooperation of players and, traditionally, multiplayer battles. Spectacular visuals are generated by the CryEngine 3 engine. The game is planned to be released in multiple chapters, the first of which will offer an estimated of 20 hours of gameplay with about 70 missions, "Squadron 42 Episode Two: Behind Enemy Lines" and "Episode 3," will launch later.
