Virus Superior Software Ltd. 1988

Release Date: 1988 Aliens have infested Earth, and are spreading a deadly virus throughout the planet. Needless to say, they must be stopped, and fast. The time pressure (your score upon completing a level is based on the uninfected percentage of the land) is only one difficult aspect of this shooter. Viewed in remote 3D with a patchwork-quilt type ground effect, with trees sticking out and full gravity. Controlling your spaceship involves balancing the direction and height as well as thrusting to the right speed. A scanner tells you where the aliens are. This game is the perfect answer to the question: what happens when you lock the designer of Elite series and future designer of Transport Tycoon in the same room? Virus is a furious and addictive action game that, like its designers, exudes creative gameplay unlike any other game you have seen. The premise is simple: pilot a polygonal spacecraft to destroy everything in sight. Levels get difficult quickly, but the robust graphics engine borrowed from Elite Plus makes up for everything. I recommend playing this game with a mouse, since its control method is excellent. Be warned, though: the game is very difficult. Don't expect to finish the game unless you are very confident of your reflexes. Also, check out the superior 1998 sequel V2000. A free fanmade remake titled Z-Virus was later made for Retro Remakes 2004 competition on Blitz3D by Stevie Goodwin.
