Unreal Tournament 2003 Digital Extremes, Epic Games / Infogrames 2002

In September, we witnessed the comeback of the top online FPS franchise -- Unreal Tournament 2003, being an extended and updated port of the XBOX hit Unreal Championship, but with mixed reactions. Graphics engine was once more top-notch, but unkept promises such as vehicular combat and notable differences in gameplay balance made it impossible for UT2003 to achieve the success and universal acclaim the original UT had. UT2003 offers strong graphics, quick gameplay and new play variations. Here the "Bombing Run" is to be most recommended of the new modes. In 2 teams one tries to shoot a bomb in the opposing gate or jump through it. Shooting it brings 3 points, 7 for jumping, similar to football. The player who has the bomb cannot shoot, must be covered by his players or throw the bomb, however to an enemy he becomes an easy victim as he cannot shoot. Then one can take from the dead person the bomb again and sprint farther. UT2003 offers partially big levels, with plant growth. The player's models are very detailed, the sound and the music as well. As in the first part one can add of course also to the multiplayer battles bots in any strength. Nevertheless, the levels are filled - in my opinion - less than in the first game (require maybe even more practise - indeed, I see this as not necessarily an advantage). In the singleplayer procedure one can put together your own team and from time to time one may exchange one of his players for another. The bots are clever and a real support, also you can alter character values in each case and the different qualities become also apparent in the game. Unfortunately, the team procedures were changed and the ability also to steal from other teams their player. Thus UT2003 in the singleplayer procedure is a rather short pleasure, serves to get to know the level but is not really much enjoyment. This 2nd Unreal Tournament game offers players quick multiplayer action in variable good to very good entertainment, and design improvements but is no evolution of the genre.
