This is an open world horror action adventure centered on the challenge of survival on a zombie-infested island with a major emphasis on melee combat. The game is set in the Palms Resort, in fictional Banoi, located off the coast of Papua New Guinea. It has up to four-player co-operative play in a heavily interactive environment. It incorporates customizable weaponry, vehicular customization/combat, and RPG elements. There is an experience system and a skill tree system. There is also a stamina bar, meaning that after a set amount of action with a weapon, the character will need to stop to regain their stamina before continuing to attack. There are "special class" zombies, which are more powerful than the standard zombie. Players will need to use flashlights in dark areas, adding suspense to the game. The four playable characters are Xian Mei (the assassin class and a staff member at the hotel), Logan (a former football star and the jack of all trades class), Sam B (the tank class and a former rapper) and Purna (the leader class and a bodyguard) but her full background has not yet been revealed. All four are in the Hero category. Each class has a different skill tree and the characters have different traits. The Assassin class is more experienced with sharp knives, the Tank class is better with blunt weapons, the Jack Of All Trades class dabbles in each class and the leader class is known for assistance with ranged weapons. The zombies have fully-modelled layers of meat and muscle rendered onto their bodies, meaning they have a multi-layered damage system with real-time injuries. A trailer was a big hit on the internet with Wired exclaiming "It may be the best video game trailer I've ever seen; gorgeous, well-edited and emotionally engaging." On May 31/2016, a Definitive Edition was released with graphics powered by Chrome Engine 6, that boast sharper textures, a new lighting system, improved character models, and enhanced visual effects. It also offers a revised user interface and a complete collection of DLCs. It comes with a bonus side-scroll fighting game titled Dead Island Retro Revenge.
