Cold Fear DarkWorks / UbiSoft Entertainment 2005

From the makers of Alone In The Dark 4 (even some of the same sounds were used), comes this game set in a dynamic environment on a stormy sea, including intense combat, intelligent enemies, and a high element of the shockingly unexpected. Your life jacket won't be sufficient! Players step into the role of Tom Hansen, a U.S. Coast Guard who is sent to board a drifting Russian whaling ship in the middle of a howling storm on the Bering Sea, who will discover there is no safe place here. Little does he know that a team of CIA operatives tried to board it shortly before, all of them ending up dead. Within minutes the entire Coast Guard team he is a part of shares their fate, except him. Now it's up to him to discover which kind of creatures wiped out his mates. Are there any survivors? What happened aboard this vessel? How does its recent visit to the Russian scientific drilling platform "Star of Sakhalin" fit in? On this constantly rocking and shifting ship and a mysterious oil rig, players must turn their interactive surroundings to their advantage to take down human enemies and enemies that aren't human any more - and save their own life. This game is a typical console-style action adventure, similar to games like the Silent Hill series. Most of the time players will be viewing the action from a third person point of view, following the character around as he utilizes an array of weapons to dispose of a variety of enemies. Occasionally, a puzzle has to be solved or a cutscene (rendered with the game's own engine) must be witnessed. Additional insight can be gained by reading the various notes, letters and diaries that can be picked up every now and then. The game employs a stamina bar, which decreases as the player performs certain actions, like running. In some instances, the ship rocks so much, and to such a great degree, that Hansen can get knocked down and potentially sent overboard. There are also many environmental hazards, like swinging electrical wires and crates hooked up to ropes, which are also affected by the swaying of the ship, and can easily crash into the player or enemies if they aren't careful. Waves crashing on to the ship's deck may also inflict damage on a player's health. The environmental hazards also effect enemies.
