FPS Year Summary 1991

Hovertank 3D, a direct predecessor to classic Wolfenstein, was created by developer id Software's John Romero and John Carmack. The graphics engine combined scalable sprites with nice big flat vectors and had enemies rendered as sprites. It pioneered ray casting technology to enable faster gameplay than 1980s vehicle simulators.
Catacomb 3D evolved Hovertank's engine by adding texture-mapped walls, a fantasy setting and a visible avatar's hand.

First Person Shooters

Catacombs 3 / Catacomb 3-D: The Descent ID Software / SoftDisk [top]

This series carried on from 2 previous games named Catacomb and Catacomb 2 which were also developed by John Carmack and published by SoftDisk but whose gameplay was viewed from overhead.

Catacomb 3D: A New Dimension [91]: You are a magician who has to kill the evil "Nemesis". In cemeteries, dungeons and catacombs you fight against orcs, skeletons, wizards, and later demons. There is just one weapon. This was the first game to use textured 3D graphics before the bigger success of Wolfenstein 3D, but still was in EGA (16 colours). The game introduced the concept of showing the player's hand. In general the ambiance doesn't manage to please a lot. Many secret passages and mostly similar textures complicate the orientation, the enemies don't look very good and are sparely animated.

Catacomb 3D: The Descent [91]: Re-release of the original, nothing changed except of the title screen and boss's name.

You control one of six characters available at a time to infiltrate an evil company who has developed war-fighting robots who have gone out of control. The game involves going through corridors and finding access to doors while using some interesting gadgets and weapons to dispatch the robots. The graphics are pretty dull but there is still some play value.

Hovertank 3D ID Software / SoftDisk [top]

One of the first games of iD Software. Sometimes it's claimed to be the first FPS or even first 3D game for DOS. The game used the same combination of scaled sprites and drawn walls that would later show up in Catacomb 3D and Wolfenstein 3D, but the walls in it are solid colors with no textures. It was the first program to only render what the player could see in his field of vision. Instead of wasting processor power on unnecessary rendering, the computer could instead draw much higher resolution and detailed graphics, immersing the player into the game even further. You are a soldier working for a company in a future world.

Nuclear attacks against competitors has become usual. Every company which can afford it are using them, too... Your mission: Gain access into the buildings on which nukes have been fired and save the innocent people, before the nukes arrive and impact. Of course it is a dangerous job. But you are paid well...

Korean Dungeon Boy / Chorongi-ui Moheom [K] Choe Wanseop / Computer War System Soft [top]

This is a popular freeware first-person dungeon crawler shooter in Hercules graphics with pseudo-3D monochrome graphics. The player controls the titular character as he runs through labyrinths, trying to reach the exit before the time allotted for the stage completion runs out. Combat is action-based, with free movement and attacking; the players needs to move a cursor with the arrow keys to aim and shoot. The hero is equipped with various firearms, most of which require ammunition, while others need batteries to function. Batteries also power-up the protagonist's armor and the radar that displays a mini-map of the stage, and must be found and collected regularly. The hero can also cast spells, which work like expendable items. The hero has to find the exit of each dungeon floor before a timer runs out, but also needs to take care not running out of ammunition or batteries, which fuel his primary weapon, armor and radar. Powerups for those lie around on the dungeon floor, but the hunt for those items is disturbed by a number of hostile creatures. Enemies are aimed at with a keyboard-controlled cursor. Still, the game doesn't feel quite like a shooter, maybe more akin to a realtime action RPG.

Midwinter II: Flames Of Freedom Maelstrom Games / MicroProse Software, Inc. [top]

This sequel to Midwinter takes place years after the events of the first game. The world has thawed and Midwinter has dissapeared beneath the ocean. It's legacy, the Peaceful Atlantic Federation is facing an invasion by the slave trading Saharan Empire. Between the two lie the Slave isles, a chain of islands under the oppressive thumb of the Saharans. You are a covert operative for the Atlantic Federation. Your mission is to conduct assassinations, enlist rebels and sabotage the Saharans operations in the slave isles. As you carry out these open-ended missions, the islands will rebel and aid your efforts when the Saharan invasion finally comes. Flames of freedom uses the same engine as Midwinter for land, air, and sea travel (and combat) but now, you control only a single customizable character. A strategic map allows you to identify key islands for your cause and determine the mission objectives that will sway it's population to your cause. Then, it's up to you to head in and carry out the mission as you see fit (perhaps guns first, perhaps with a big bag of money, perhaps just relying on your charm). Flames of Freedom mixes first person action with strategy, vehicle combat, and diplomacy for a unique gaming experience that carries on the Midwinter legacy.

Terminator, The Bethesda Softworks LLC [top]

This was the first officially licensed game based on the Terminator and was an early predecessor to the open world type of shooter which the Grand Theft Auto franchise became. Take on the role of Kyle Reese and protect Sarah Connor from the cyborg sent back in time to kill her or, become the Terminator and eliminate Kyle and Sarah. Either way, the player chases his opponent through Los Angeles buying or stealing weapons and equipment while attempting to eliminate his enemy and avoid the police. The game takes place a huge (roughly 10 miles by 6 miles) 3-D rendered area of central Los Angeles. The game area runs roughly from Beverly Drive to Central Ave (lengthwise), and from Mulholland Drive to National Blvd (vertically). A game map is included in the box for reference. Though the buildings and their placement within the world is generic, and highways/overpasses have been removed, the streets and their layout are largely accurate. The game also includes some landmarks, such as Dodger Stadium, Griffith Park, and the Silver Lake Reservoir. The game contains approximately 20000 3D objects.

This package allows users to create their own 3D worlds, using technology related to the Freescape universe seen in games such as Castle Master and Driller / Space Station Oblivion. Pull-down menus allow objects to be created and positioned, with movement loops and simple animation defined. A network of rooms can be created. A simple BASIC-style language is integrated to allow puzzles and conditions (open a door when a key in placed into it, for example). You can also include enemies which must be shot. At any moment you can enter the gameworld to test it. It came with a 30-minute video tape, featuring an introduction and a tutorial presented by Ian Andrew, the original designer of the Freescape system.

Third Person Shooters

Desert Raider AGD / Ediciones Manali [top]

As the captain of infantry you need to cross the Sahara desert in a jeep, while fighting against "enemy armadas. For any particular military conflict game is not tied - but it is possible to dream that we face a Frenchman from the "Army of the Desert" Leclerc, an Englishman of the Long Range Desert Group, and even the soldiers of the Spanish colonial army somewhere in the Rio de Oro, or Segiet el-Hamra. Third person view from behind; Jeep automatically moves forward, we can only slightly "redirect" to the left or right. The task - to avoid obstacles and shoot at enemies that are represented (supposedly) only Air Force (helicopters, airplanes) and which explode from one hit, and generally stay on the screen at most a few seconds. Some of them are really not aggressive, but others drop bombs that instantly kill the jeep in contact with him - such munitions need to keep up to shoot in the air or dodge them. Almost more dangerous than the enemy air force, are part of the landscape: large rocks, or already mentioned mysterious cactus: the clash with them leads to inevitable destruction. Along the way you can collect some purple bonuses, similar to the fuel cans - but recently some reason (as if), and so does not decrease. The game is divided into several practically do not differ from each other levels; to complete the level necessary to reach the filling stations similarity desert. Graphics - just CGA (as always in EM games), rather quality, though unassuming-looking. The complexity of the process can be evaluated as an average. In general - nothing special, of course, but - a rarity.

The viewpoint is from slightly behind Harrington, while the game scrolls on as you clear each section. Mouse control is offered on 16-bit versions. Your armour must be kept functional by collecting top-ups, and there are weapon power-ups such as machine guns and rocket launchers to be had. You can't go in all-guns-blazing however, as killing a single innocent causes Harrington to lose his job

Chuck Yeager's Air Combat Electronic Arts, Inc. [top]

Chuck Yeager's Air Combat is a 1991 computer aircraft simulation game produced by Electronic Arts. Famed pilot Chuck Yeager was a technical consultant in the game and his digitized voice is featured in the game, giving encouragement and praise before and after missions. The game is characterized for its good balance of an action laden gameplay which focuses on classical dog fights and a simple but still realistic flight model which justifies calling Chuck Yeager's Air Combat a simulation. Unlike in many other flight simulation games of its day, altitude and aircraft characteristics have a big influence on the behaviour of the game's simulated aircraft. Realism has been sacrificed to some degree to enhance gameplay however: E.g. a real fighter plane expends all of its ammunition after a few short bursts, while in Chuck Yeager's Air Combat the rate of fire has been reduced considerably, making dog fights longer. To assist a newcomer to the game several help features can be activated, such as unlimited ammunition or easier aiming. A virtual Chuck Yeager can be activated, who gives advice.

This is a VGA re-make of Bell and Braben's space trading flight simulator, Elite. It is an updated conversion of the original that features new graphics and sounds/music. The novella included with this package, 'Imprint' by Andy Redman, which formed the latter part of the manual is different from the one that came with the original Elite releases. It was coded entirely in assembly language by Chris Sawyer, who later wrote RollerCoaster Tycoon. It has a ninth galaxy that can only be reached by hyperspacing into Witch Space. In 2000, the game was made freeware.

Hyperspeed is a space trading and combat simulation game, and a follow-up to Lightspeed. The player controls a pilot who is sent on a mission to find a new home for humans, after the Earth has become nearly uninhabitable. The goal is to encounter alien species and negotiate with them to allow the colonization of a planet by the humans. To do that, the player has to engage in diplomatic talks and trading, and also fend off hostile aliens. The gameplay mostly relies on the template introduced by Elite: the player explores the galaxy piloting a space ship, encountering alien races, trading with them, and purchasing better weapons, shields, and engine for the space ship, helping the protagonist to survive in combat. Killing Cloud is set in a San Francisco ravaged by an opaque orange death smog layer known as the Killing Cloud. This hovers around the middle of the skyscrapers, creating a claustrophobic low level experience (and a different feel to the many other flight simulations set in the city, such as F/A-18 Interceptor). In this maelstrom, the Black Angel gang is terrorising the public. The player is a member of the SFPD Police force, charged with bringing them down throughout ten missions. Some are out-and-out action while others are more strategic. You can only survive for 20 minutes in the smog, so time is crucial in these missions. In addition to outflying the enemy on your hoverbike, the player must carefully pre-position ground forces to arrest him when he is brought down, using Pick-Up Pods. Once arrested, a suspect must be interrogated to release enough information to know what the next threat is.

Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe Lucasfilm Games LLC / LucasArts Entertainment Company LLC [top]

Fly as an American or German pilot in the years 1943-1945 in this WWII air combat simulation. This game features several experimental German aircraft to try out. Can you alter the outcome of WWII with them? The experimental German planes include Messerschmitt 262, Me163 Komet rocket plane, and the Gotha "flying wing". You can also fly the traditional ME109 or FW190 piston engine aircraft. As for the American side, you can take to the skies in the P-51 Mustang, P-47 Thunderbolt, or the B-17 Flying Fortress bomber. In the B-17, you can not only control the plane itself, but also the gun turrets and the bombing sight. Next to training missions for each aircraft, there are several historical missions available, recreating real air encounters of the war. The Tour of Duty mode allows you to take your pilot through a set number of missions, gaining promotions and medals, with the ultimate goal of surviving the tour. Finally, there's the strategic campaign mode where you can fight the whole war from either side, both planning and flying missions. As the Americans, the objective is to cripple Germany's industry through strategic bombardment. As the Germans, you have to survive by keeping the industry alive. As time passes, new aircraft become available, in accordance with history. For instance, the Mustang was not deployed until late 1943. For the German side, the jet and rocket aircraft have to be researched before they can be built. The German side can also build V1 and V2 missiles. Another option is to let industrial branches work in secret to hinder the American bombing efforts. Other interesting features are a mission editor and a film playback option. In 1992, a cd version was released that contained all the four different mission packs as well.

Spectre Velocity Development / Peninsula Gameworks [top]

Spectre is a 3D shooter where the player drives a little red car/tank and blasts away enemies. The gameplay is similar to Battlezone, and obviously inspired by it.
There is a selection of three tanks, each with three values (speed; armor; and firepower) balanced out to match its name: Tough Guy is heavy on armor, but slow and not very powerful; Speedy is fast, but low armor; and Balanced combines both strengths, but decreased. A fourth tank allows the player to design a custom variant.
Every level consists of a large plane filled with enemy tanks, several psychedelic walls with odd images that often flicker or warp resembling an acid trip, and tacky 3D models like windmills. The object of each level is to either destroy all the enemy tanks in the level, or to collect all the flags. Every level has a certain theme to it, anything from plain green to a colorful blinking eye or images of sand dunes are to be found on the walls, windmills and flags throughout the level.
With every passing level, enemy tanks grow smarter and their rates of fire increases. Also in later levels, new, smarter, more powerful enemy tanks join the skirmish. The player has a limited amount of ammo, but driving over ammo deposits replenishes a small amount of ammunition, as well as driving over shield deposits grants additional shields. The three different views (first, third, and top-down) allow the player to incorporate additional strategies into the battles.
The game boasts having supposedly an infinite amount of levels, though anything after level 80 is almost instant death. A high score table is also included.

Strike II Millenium Interactive / ISC [top]

This sequel to Thunderstrike (1990), not to be confused with Core Design's Thunderstrike II which was a sequel to the helicopter fighter Thunderhawk, is another 3D spaceship shooter. It's not inferior to its predecessor in terms of playability, and in some ways even surpasses it. The plot of the game is much more vague, but it is good for the genre. Gameplay is based on missions (often not very much related to each other), the ultimate purpose of which, as a rule, is to make money to improve your ship and acquire all kinds of new weapons and equipment (if the ship is damaged during the mission - its repair, of course, will cost money, too.) It's possible to choose a pilot campaign for passage in four different races. And there will be different missions and ships, and features of these ships. Graphically the game looks great for 1991 with its variety of colors, the quality of drawing objects and almost full 3D (view the game in the first person, as in the first part). Add to this a really fascinating and sometimes very difficult gameplay and all that is described above - and you get a fitting end to a good game. In 1994, Strike 2 Enhanced was released.

Top Gun: Danger Zone Distinctive Software, Inc. / Konami, Inc. [top]

Inspired by the famous 1986 film, Top Gun: Danger Zone is a desert dogfighting air combat simulation set on board an aircraft carrier (the USS Brigham) patrolling the waters off Libya and the Middle East. You have a choice of two aircraft - the F-14 Tomcat (in which you also get a Radar Intercept officer to assist you) and an F-18 Hornet (where you'll fly solo). The choice of missions is limited to eight - intercept, escort, clear airspace, provide air support and run interference. However, you also get to participate in the "Top Gun Challenge Board" in the Officer's Mess, where you challenge 12 other fellow pilots in simulated one-to-one dogfights to practice your skills, get their respect and increase your ranking. You also have a choice of playing against the CPU or against another human player in split-screen mode. The flight model is not completely realistic - but it is not ridiculous, as in many other games (even today). The game aims to have an arcade-style simplicity for the flying, and adds character development similar to many RPGs.

Twilight: 2000 Paragon Software Corporation / MicroProse Software, Inc. [top]

This tactical wargame/adventure is based on the GDW pencil and paper role-playing game. NATO and Warsaw Pact forces spent the latter part of the 1990s fighting a brutal war, which has turned Poland into a desolate radiation-riddled land, full of abandoned vehicles and weapons. The maniacal Baron Czarny wants to take over what's left of the country; you must stop him. The player must organize a team of 20 generated soldiers, each of whom will respond to orders differently, based on their personality. Specific abilities, attributes and languages spoken can be set. Action from within the vehicles is shown in 3D, outside action is viewed top-down. Both aspects of the game require meticulous planning around the game's range of weapons and vehicles. Help can be received from NPCs, via the game's communication system.

Wing Commander II: Special Operations 1 ORIGIN Systems, Inc. [top]

After the victory at K’Tithrak Mang, things are looking up for the Confederation. Several Kilrathi planets are rebelling and breaking away from the Empire. The Special Operations division of Confed is assigned to support the Kilrathi rebels and protect them from the inevitable Imperial counterattack. That's not the only problem, though: after a mutiny on a Confed cruiser, the crew have taken to piracy and attack human trade ships in the nearby star systems. The first add-on to Wing Commander II offers 20 new missions. It also offers new ships: the Crossbow is Confed's latest bomber, faster and more maneuverable than the Broadsword. The new member of the Kilrathi fleet is the heavy fighter Gothri. The story of Wing Commander II is continued with lots of cutscenes, featuring old and new characters. Player characters from the original game (and their kill scores) can be transferred into the add-on. When The Kilrathi Saga was released, Special Operations 1 and 2 were made available for download from the Origin web/FTP site.

Wing Commander II: Speech Accessory Pack ORIGIN Systems, Inc. [top]

This is an add-on for the floppy version of Wing Commander 2. It adds digitized speech to all space combat communications and to a few cinematic sequences. In 1991, sound cards were still considered something of a luxury commodity, and most gamers were content with the beeps coming out of their PC box. However, all it took was one session with a fully-speech enabled Wing Commander 2 to sell Sound Blasters by the dozen. At the time, the level of immersion it added to the game was entirely unparallelled. More than any other single thing, Origin's adoption of the Sound Blaster for speech in Ultima 7 and, especially, Wing Commander 2 is what brought about Creative Lab's still unbroken reign over the personal sound card industry.

Wing Commander II: Vengeance of the Kilrathi ORIGIN Systems, Inc. [top]

Wing Commander II: Vengeance of the Kilrathi is the first sequel in Chris Roberts' Wing Commander science fiction space combat simulator franchise of computer games, produced by Origin Systems. Released in 1991, Wing Commander II retains much of the first game's core conventions: an interstellar war between the Terran Confederation and the felinoid warrior race called the Kilrathi, multiple allies as wingmen, and a wide variety of ships on both sides of the war. However, WCII places a greater emphasis on storytelling, providing various sprite-animated cutscenes and some of the industry's first examples of voice acting. The storyline is also somewhat less open-ended: the game's campaign tree is much more structured and the player character can no longer be promoted or awarded medals. Wingmen can no longer be killed during normal gameplay; when their fighters are damaged beyond repair, they eject (though some die in scripted sequences). Finally, because the story is a direct sequel to WC, many Kilrathi ships have names similar to the WC ships they replace (for instance, the "Sartha" replaces the "Salthi", and the Confederation uses an upgraded version of the Rapier medium fighter). A Deluxe Edition cd version was released in 1992 which also included the expansion packs Special Operations 1 and 2 and the Speech Accessory Pack. In 1996, Wing Commander: The Kilrathi Saga was released which contained remastered versions of games 1-3, with a high-quality soundtrack and perfect execution under Windows without speed or stability problems. It added drop-away cockpit support for 1 & 2 and rudder/pedal support for 3. Remastered versions of the add-on disks for 1 & 2 were available as downloads from Origin's website.

Wing Commander: The Secret Missions 2 - Crusade ORIGIN Systems, Inc. [top]

In the second add-on to Wing Commander, everything seems quiet at first. The Tiger's Claw is stationed in the Firekka system. The Firekkans are bird-like aliens who are applying for membership in the Confederation, with the Tiger's Claw watching over the diplomatic negotiations. Things change when huge Kilrathi fleets appear near Firekka. Even though the system has no military value, the Kilrathi are pulling fleets from other systems, all of them heading for Firekka. The Confederation is puzzled, until a Kilrathi defector is able to shed light on the mystery and the pilots of the Claw are called to defend Firekka and the Confederation diplomats from a Kilrathi holy war. The add-on adds 16 new missions to fly, with a linear mission structure. New Kilrathi ships include the Hhriss heavy fighter, the Snakeir strike carrier and an upgraded version of the Dralthi. The player gets to fly these new Dralthi, provided by the Kilrathi defector, in special undercover missions. Many of the Kilrathi fighters are now manned by the Drakhai, the elite Imperial Guard, while the Confederation's defenses are reinforced by two new wingmen, Doomsday and Jazz. Player characters from both the original game and the first add-on can be transferred, and the Mission Selector from that add-on, allowing one to play any mission from Wing Commander, is also included. In 1996, after Wing Commander: The Kilrathi Saga was released which contained remastered versions of games 1-3 and ran under Windows, Secret Missions 1 and 2 were made available for download from the Origin web/FTP site.

ShootEm Up 2D/3D

Battlestorm Titus France SA / Titus Software Corporation [top]

A top-down space shooter that was different from most others at the time in that it did not just scroll continuously in one direction, but could scroll at different speeds in all possible directions on the X and Y axis, on the player's whim. The game takes place above the surface of a ruined, devastated planet: each level starts within a large area, in which your ship has free movement. Avoiding surface hazards, such as auto-aiming turrets, the goal is to destroy enemy spacecraft that hover around the large area in groups. Each wave of attacks is followed by a bomb-dropping mothership, which you must hurry up and destroy before it moves off the playfield, in order to proceed to the next wave; the last mothership gives way to the boss - a gigantic spacecraft that will chase you around the playfield. Beaten it? you are transported to a short section of standard shooter fare, where the screen auto-scrolls vertically, at the end of which you face a final monstrosity. This ends the level - on to the next one. Absorbing enemy fire will deplete your power, while collecting power-ups and destroying turrets can bring it back up somewhat. At 0% power, the game is over - although you may get an option to continue, based on how far you got.

Dragon Spirit Namco Limited / Domark Software Ltd. [top]

Princess Alicia of the kingdom of Mitgult is kidnapped by the monster Zawell. It's now up to the heroic warrior Amul to transform himself into a blue dragon and go and rescue the princess. This is a vertically scrolling shoot-em-up conversion of a 1987 arcade game which consists of nine stages. Players fly around and destroy everything in their path. Much like in Xevious, action takes place on two planes, both in the sky (where the dragon is flying) and on the ground. The dragon has two different kind of attacks: fire that shoots up the screen, and fire that drops to hit a place on the ground in front of the dragon. Enemies exist both in the air and on the ground, and some can fly up from the ground to the sky. Players can pick up power-ups, or upgrades, that will help them in their fight. Upgrades can include extra heads on the dragon, health, faster shots, and more. At the end of each stage is a boss that needs to be defeated. Having good upgrades that are not lost from being hit before reaching the bosses will help.

Slordax: The Unknown Enemy Softdisk Publishing [top]

Legends tell of a race of super beings, the Slordax, who once tried to conquer the galaxy. The war lasted for a century. In the end, the Slordax were repelled. The Slordian system was dead for over seven hundred years. But now the Slordax are back. The Intergalactic Defense Alliance gave you the task to take them out with your RedDog Adaptive Strike Ship before they grow too strong to defeat. Slordax is an early game from the famous developers that later went on to form id Software and make Doom & Quake. It's a rather typical shoot-'em-up vertical scroller with EGA graphics and five levels. An unique feature is the ability to control how fast the screen scrolls.

Super Space Invaders Taito Corporation / Domark Software Ltd. [top]

Remember that arcade classic Space Invaders? Well this game takes it to the next level with harder aliens, bosses, power ups, and a variety of scenery! Invaders come in several configurations for you to try to blast, and power-ups help you with more weapons to choose from. It's a PC conversion of Taito's 1990 arcade game Super Space Invaders '91. As you would expect, it's the classic shoot'em up you all know, updated with lots of different extra weapons, various background graphics, a co-operative two-player mode and a fun bonus level called "Cattle Mutilation". Fans of original Space Invaders will have a lot of fun, although it gets repetitive quite quickly with mundane enemy ships and level backgrounds that aren't up to par with Silpheed.

This Missile Command variant puts the player in control of two missile bases, each controlled by a different mouse button. As warheads, planes and smart bombs attack the player's cities, he or she must fire missiles at them by pointing the mouse at a target area and clicking the appropriate button. Ammunition is limited and missile bases can be completely destroyed by enemy fire, so a mix of strategy and coordination is necessary for success.
