Auryn Quest: The Neverending Story Discreet Monsters / The Adventure Company 2001

Inspired by the novel The Neverending Story by Michael Ende, Auryn Quest combines 3D adventure and puzzle-solving with arcade "jump and run" sequences, but without any shooting or violence. Your hero, Atreyu, must find the magic Auryn and restore Fantasia its power before it is destroyed by The Nothing. Beginning at the Temple of a Thousand Doors, Atreyu will explore six richly detailed worlds during his quest, each with its own challenges and puzzles. The difficulty of the arcade elements increases as the player advances through the levels. To enter the first five worlds, you must collect at least five yellow energy balls in each, beginning with the Mountain of Destiny. Once a world has been entered, you can go back to it to finish the quest for all ten energy balls, a prerequisite for gaining entry into the sixth and final world, The Labyrinth of Time. Each world has specific challenges, explained by its main character. Find three brothers to open a gate in the Mountain of Destiny, repair a machine in Gaya's Lava Dungeon, and find a door lever in Singing Tree Country. In The Wandering Mountain, you must find your way through the gears of Urwerk, then climb to the top of the mountain before reaching the Oracle, the fifth world, where you'll be judged on your progress. Without all 50 energy balls, you'll have to return to each level to find those you initially missed. In the final level, The Labyrinth of Time, you must find a total of 50 auryns, of which only one is the true artifact. The game started development in 1998 but constant technology updates and design changes delayed what was to be "The Real Neverending Story" month after month until the developer went bankrupt in May 2001. A new company, Attaction, acquired its assets and a team of five employees cannibalized The Real Neverending Story's technology and license to turn it into this jump-and-run game.
