Uh... well, I'm back, after trying that patch...
Hate to be the voice of doom here, but that didn't work at all.
I tried the patch - replaced the .exe files like it said in the readme, added the file to the registry, then ran glh2.exe. Although it certainly said it was the new version and everything seemed to be working fine, the moment I tried to start the game it hung up, stating that "progs.dat system vars have been modified, progdefs.h is out of date". After that I could only close it by control+alt+deleting to bring up the task manager and closing Hexen 2 that way. At least before I could get into the game, buggy though it may have been - now I couldn't even do that.
Well, no problem, I thought. The readme mentioned that maybe the game wouldn't start and that I should go into video options and change the video mode there. Well, that turned out to be futile as well - because, just as the game had always done, the video options screen seemed stuffed when running in gl mode - you couldn't select or change anything, and some of the text overlapped in an odd way - that's the same with another rip I had of this long ago (from somewhere else) and was like that pre-patch as well, so I suspect it's ALWAYS like that... I thought maybe the patch would fix it, but it still looks the same. So yeah, I couldn't get that suggested solution to work either.
But maybe I could run it in software mode?
Nope, no such luck. In fact, it worked worse in software mode than in GL mode. I couldn't even get into the menu this time - I immediately got a black screen that completely froze my computer and I couldn't even control+alt+delete out of.
So now I can't start the game properly at all anymore. Any idea what the errors mean and what I can do about them?
