Roland originally released the Virtual Sound Canvas (Win 9X) which was a great emulator. And some years back it's worthy successor Sound Canvas VA (Win XP-10).
It's purpose is to allow DOS and Windows playback of MIDIs using near-accurate reproduction of SC-55 (many composers used) to SC-8820 (higher quality samples).

There's a time limit restriction of 10 minutes. You can use these patches for unlimited time.
1. You'll need to install Sound Canvas
2. Then install loopMIDI
(for win95 - winxp, you might need MIDI-OX)
3. Download savihost x86/x64
http://www.hermannseib.com/programs/old
(Win XP needs 1.42 or older, supposedly Win95 works also but untested)
4. Rename SAVIhost to "Sound Canvas VA.exe". Run it.
5. Setting up the MIDI connection with loopMIDI / OX might be the tricky part that I can't explain well.
