Unrequested thoughts on Borderlands

Postby Trey » Mon Nov 23, 2009 4:31 am

Ok, am I the only one who hates these Shooter/RPGs? Where's the realism in emptying your gun on a guy at point blank range only to have him hit you once and kill you dead? And the endless pointless grinding missions: find this plant, kill these guys, kill these animals...

Barren landscapes populated with nothing but mindless robotic bad guys waiting for you to wander close enough to them to make them attack you... ugh.

Isn't this the successful formula for Serious Sam ?

As for Borderlands, i found it pretty enjoyable, though it's more fun co-op. The RPG elements work better than in Hellgate.
The enemies that charge you with axes can sometimes kill you in two hits from full health & shield, but the point is you're not supposed to let them get that close. That's their 'tactic', and usually you should hear them coming.
And grinding pointless quests ? Most games suffer from this with the "kill X of Y" and "fetch X from Y" formulas, and Borderlands is pretty far from being the worst culprit.

If you thought this game was going to be realistic in any way.. it's described as "Diablo with guns". I'm not sure what you were thinking and I hope you didn't spend any money on it. That being said I've found the game to be quite fun. =D PS Even looking at screenshots of it doesn't exactly say "Hey we're going for realism here!".

The game looks very cool. I like the cell shading graphics. It's pure the game play that makes me crazy.
