Something new about 4Shared

Postby zobraks » Wed Aug 24, 2011 9:05 am

Well, it may not be so new for some of you, but in case it is (as it is for me) you may be pleasantly surprised (as I am ):

BTW, how often do you log in(to) your accounts nowadays?

Wow, I login every month. Hope this is true as it will be a third of the work. :D

I hope the random removal of files will also be less...

I've noticed also something new: the maximum size limit has been raised to 2048 MB per file.

I did some tests and uploaded a 600 MB file to see how things are going. The uploading went fine. However, I found out that you need to create a free account to download a file of this size. Next, I upped a file just under 500 MB. This file could be downloaded without an account. So I think it's fair to say that anonymous users can download files up to 500 MB max. The waiting time is still 20 seconds.

I didn't test bigger files, so I don't know if you need a paid account for files greater than 1 GB.

Speaking of 4Shared, I'm testing the 180 days limit and the (free) accounts I didn't log in for 5 months still work.

Keep in mind that the files still may be deleted after 30 days without download.

Fortunately, that's not true (or I had a fool's luck :)).

I just logged in an account I had not logged in since 15th of August last year (exactly 5 months ago), so although nobody downloaded the file I posted there (the number of downloads is the same as it was five months ago) the account is still live and kicking .

I guess 6 months is still the limit, but I'll have to wait one more month to prove that (experimentally  - I have more accounts with last login made on 15th of August 2011).

Looking purely at the expiration date it's 6 months indeed. But when you look at the message when you hover your mouse over the question mark you'll get this:

I think this is the reason why files disappear over time.

EDIT: I did make a mistake, I thought it was 30 days with no download but it is 30 days after the last login. Sorry :)

I've always had wildly varying speeds from 4shared. The speed depends on which server the download is routed to (probably due to network congestion on their part), but beyond that I have no idea.

It varies for me too: sometimes it's 1.8 MB/s, next it's 40 kB/s.

I've uploaded a 1.6 GB file as a test. I can confirm it can be downloaded with a free account.

The space on a free 4shared account has been increased to 15 GB (+5 GB after verifying your e-mail address = 20 GB). This goes for existing accounts as well.

I think they dropped the "Verify e-mail" function to get more space. The last account I registered only has 15 GB of space. Also, now you need to verify your e-mail address before you can use your account.
