KQ9/TSL is no more

February 28th, 2010

To Our Fans:

In 2005, Phoenix Online Studios received a Cease & Desist letter from Vivendi Universal, the owners of the King's Quest IP, in regards to our work on The Silver Lining. We complied with the request, and over the months that followed, we were able to work out a non-commercial fan license with Vivendi that allowed us to continue our work on the game.

We have spent a lot of time recently reworking the material of The Silver Lining into episodic releases, with the first out of a planned five episodes completed, and submitted for review, and had hoped we would be able to bring our game to you, the fans, in the Spring of 2010.

Recently, however, ownership of the Sierra IP changed hands and became the property of Activision. After talks and negotiations in the last few months between ourselves and Activision, they have reached the decision that they are not interested in granting a non-commercial license to The Silver Lining, and have asked that we cease production and take down all related materials on our website.

As before, we must and will comply with this decision, as much as we may wish we could do otherwise.

We cannot say enough how much we appreciate the support we have had over these years from our fans. Without you, we would never have gotten this far. There would be no game to develop, and no one to develop it for. You have been amazing and steadfast, and we will always remember that and appreciate it more than we can say.

Sadly, after eight years of dedicated work and even more dedicated fans, The Silver Lining project is closing down.

What the future holds for us, as individuals or a team, we cannot say. We have an amazing development team, however, filled with talented and hard-working individuals, and we hope the teamwork and rapport we’ve developed won’t go to waste. We hope that when we do know what the future holds for us, our fans will be there to enjoy what we can give them still.

Again, thank you all so much for everything. This has been a long and crazy road, full of more twists than we could’ve anticipated, but more triumphs and wonderful memories than we could’ve ever hoped for. And for that, to all of you and to everyone on our team, we will always be grateful.

Thank You,

The Silver Lining Development Team

So, apparently, the first episode of TSL is completed. Currently, Phoenix Online Studios is trying to get TSL released by having people sign an online petition...

If that doesn't work out and TSL is never released, the only hope is for a leak of some type. I know there was a contest for beta testers, so there is a chance that the testers still have builds of the game.

So, here is a list of the beta test winners. If you know any of these people, please ask them if they can provide a copy.

Why not change the title? It's even simpler, then throwing 8-years work down the drain.

Actually, they did change the title during the first C&D from Vivendi in 2005. It was originally titled King's Quest IX: Every Cloak Has A Silver Lining. Vivendi allowed the project to continue if the game was retitled as The Silver Lining.

Still, I think there more could've been done to the game, like changing characters names or stating that this develompent has nothing to do with original King's Quest (Я) franchise. They should've consulted a lawyer, like EFF, if there was a legal threat. Taking it's down just like that is dumb as fudge.

...they got infected by Bobby Kotick revolutionary marketing ideas  How stupid can it become to fire two CoD MW2 head developers?Activision finaly turns into Bobby's Inferno for gamers :x

Question: Do we have all the other Lukas Arts and Sierra remakes?I think to remember there was another title which was told to shutdown.Lets see.So we have ZMcC,Day of the tentacle,Black Couldron.Any other fan remake or sequel title missing???Wasn't there a fan made remake of some other Kings Quest part which was removed three years ago????

There's a Day of the tentacle remake?

VGA remakes were done by fans of King's Quest 1,2,3 and Qust For Glory 2 as well.

Ok, I cast my vote. I've found another worthy petition on that site, asking people to kill all minorities. They already got 35000 votes. [/url]

Great news! :woot:

http://www.tsl-game.com/news.php?paged=4
We are extremely happy to announce that our project, The Silver Lining, will definitely see the light of day!

In a wonderful turn of events, Activision reached out to the Phoenix Online team a few months ago with a desire to revisit their decision regarding The Silver Lining. After negotiations, the C&D has been officially rescinded, and Phoenix Online has been granted a non-commercial license to release The Silver Lining!

Our team is ecstatic about this, and as hard as we’ve worked for 8 years, it’s the tireless belief and support of you, our fans, that has made this possible. We want to give special thanks to the Save The Silver Lining team, who put together and ran an amazing and organized campaign, and rallied our fantastic fans to make a difference. You made it possible once, and now we’ve done what seemed impossible for a second time! The support we received from all of you was amazing and honestly blew us away. We always knew we had some of the best fans out there, but even so, wow! We will always be grateful for your unending belief in us.

And that’s not the only good news we have for you: the first episode of The Silver Lining will be released in just two weeks on July 10th! The long wait is almost over, and we couldn’t have done it without you!
