As far as I know it had Starforce-protection and was not for free.
There is a successor of it which was named "Ubersoldier 2" in 2007.
In 2008 it has been resold as "Crimes of War". It is involved to the WorldWar2 scenery and seems to exist in a censored version only.

Also a re-released product is the game "Red Ocean" from a German developer.

All three games are good action shooters.

Then I must congratulate you on your perfect Chinese, since some of the toilets on the countryside in China are just like that: some bushes enclosed with a fence - and a guy at the entrance, who charges money for using he "toilet". :D

...and then there's the 'squat' type toilets, god help me. I'd have to manage not to fall over, or poop on my foot!

Narfous, what you are asking for are Quake2 related games made by Russian guy Sheppard.
To quote the author, Soldier of Empire is "Quake2-style game with grafics and effects based on Quake2Evolved and Quake2Max code."
The author refers to his work on Trondheims, Lendlease and SoE as modding.
Download links are freely available here:
[deleted because I'm afraid posting them brought the site down]

Ubersoldier was renamed to Supercommando. I don't know if it's available for download.
http://www.supercommando.com
I guess the project is still under development.

didn't require quake2, and also didn't state that it required it either, so no not a quake2 mod. we have alien arena on the site that's a quake2 mod too right?

Ugh, I was the first who answered your question correctly and you are being so arrogant with me. I spent my own time to investigate the matter and got you links and info.
Did I say it requires Q2? Haven't you heard of stand-alone mods? Have you heard of TC? Do you realize "mod" is quite a wide term?
SoE definitely has Q2 roots so it is a modification of one kind or another. Yes, it's on Q2E engine, and what's Q2E based on?
As a matter of fact it was enough for me to look at screenshots and see "baseq2" directory in the game to make no mistake about Q2 relation.
I called those games "mods" just for that sole purpose, to stress that they are more like fan-made than commercial titles. Also I was referring to mod community for the same reason.
My message was not supposed to be a start of discussion of what a mod is.

Overlooked you are "THE RIP MAKER" - the plague of all true gamers...

P.S. Alien Arena is a Q2 mod too far. Technically speaking it's a modified Q2 engine's source code based game. As well as SoE is.

OMG, don't pull it out of the context. In this thread many people argued the games in question were commercial or not even on Q2 engine so
that is why by only 2 words I was hoping to address both mistakes: yes, it's Q2 related, yes it's a mod (and most mods are free).
HL2 has Quake source bits and is a Qmod even farther :)))

What's wrong with you, anyway? If you're having difficulties saying "thank you", you may just keep silent - that will do.

Nothing is wrong with me, the usual definition of a mod is that it piggy backs/depends onto another complete game to function. In this case it isn't a mod

Well, there are mods and TCs that simply include vital files inside their installation. As a result they don't require / depend upon anything.
So your presumption that any mod requires original to play is wrong. This requirement is not an identifier of a mod either, 'cause it may be an add-on, etc.
Taking advantage of a source code instead of precompiled game files is a next step but still falls short of original look, because the engine is virtually the same.
I highly doubt the author redrew every texture and model for his mod. Probably a lot was borrowed from different sources. I believe he used some kind of Q2 map editor for mapping and so on.
Looking at such a compilation based on a mix of Q2 engines with baseq2 directory inside and screenshots reminiscent of Q2, I called it a Quake2 mod and have no regrets about it, even though I won't argue this game is a stand-alone title.
The whole idea for the author to create a stand-alone game was to be able to legally sell it. That's what publishers were ready to pay some money for. So, in my opinion, what he was doing was still modding but this time of a bigger scale - using free engine to make "clear game", as the author noted.
Like Lendlease, this game reminds a Q2 TC the most.

And in no way am I trying to diminish the great work by Sheppard.

Also it is very likely we are talking about different games and my guess about what you were really looking for was not successful.
