Just stumbled upon this story and though I'd share it with you people: Jason Rubin: Metro: Last Light is the "triumph of an underdog"

Rich corporations try to squeeze every ounce of productivity out of their employees or ship the jobs to cheaper countries with no laws. So, it's not surprising that game developers have bad work conditions for their employees. That's why unions were formed in the past, to protect workers. But now, companies that are already profitable just pack up to some other country to avoid giving workers their fair share. :evil:

An article full of excuses (why if the game is alright?). Praise towards 4A Games doesn't make up for looking down on business in post-USSR countries. Reads almost like "we must rescue these talented people from a terrible place named Ukraine they were unfortunate to live and work in".
The part about hardware and furniture is just absurd.
If you care about the art of making games then you have to care about more than the final product.
This is life. More precisely, capitalism + globalization.
Games are industry, not an art, and this executive is a part of it.
I wonder though, how company that cut costs like a champ could still go bankrupt...

That's kind of common with developers, a game's never really 'done'. Not to there satisfaction anyway.

I would agree here, but that was publisher's POV. He never quoted a single person from the dev team to provide first-hand opinion on the 'conditions'. Was talking about some ratings, but we know that not ratings sell a game. Other than to give credit to several people and raise 4A Games a few notches in citation index, I honestly don't know why he went public at all.

Anyways, here I stop being too serious about this thread that was conceived at least partly as trolling.

Well, I have to admit that Jason Rubin's article about 4A Games was kind of corny.
After the successful release of BioShock Infinite and subsequent Kevin Levine's world-acclaim, it seems like some game developers want to go "rock star" (just look at John Romero and Cliffy-B, they've always behaved like that). However, most developers prefer to keep a low profile, like the people at 4A games (and many more).

Anyway, I just finished playing Metro:LL and I thought it was an amazing experience from beginning to end. It's sort of weird that we still don't have a thread going "unrequested thoughts on Metro: Last Light" :D
Seriously, M:LL, albeit some minor things that might bother some (cut-scenes), is the closest thing to a masterpiece.
