Battle for Midway Abacus Software, Inc. 2001

Following their first venture Pacific Theater, Battle for Midway is the second title in the Abacus series of add-ons for the Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator. Created as an add-on for Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator, Battle for Midway deals with two major World War II events with sixteen aerial combat missions focusing on the May 5-9, 1942 Battle of the Coral Sea (6) and its follow-up conflict, the June 4-5 Battle of Midway (10). Represent either the Japanese or Americans by using six war-tested aircraft and the Japanese Kyushu J7W Shinden (translation: Magnificent Lightning), included as a bonus plane. This experimental interceptor emphases climb rate, speed, and firepower, but never reached production. The American aircraft include the Douglas SBD-3 Dauntless, Grumman F4F Wildcat, Douglas TBD-1 Devastator, Brewster F2A-3 Buffalo, Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and a bonus plane, the Lockheed P-38 Lightning. In addition to the bonus interceptor, the Japanese air power consists of the Aichi D3A-1 "Val", Mitsubishi A6M2 "Zero", Kawanishi N1K1-J "George", Nakajima KI43-I "Oscar" and the Mitsubishi G4M1 "Betty". The manual contains two maps of the Pacific battle theaters as well as 18-pages devoted to the history that includes historical photographs and Armed Forces posters of the era. Abacus uses "elevated mesh terrain" to develop the tropical island landscapes and 3D mission objects such as aircraft carriers, battleships, buildings and more. In 2001, an update was released that allowed the expansion to be used with Microsoft Combat Simulator 2.
