The Intelligent Guide to Over 44,000 Videos - each entry only mentions the director and a few principal performers plus a perfunctory plot summary. One of the first discs by the multimedia arm of that Paramount movie studio, it focuses much more on helping you find a movie to rent for an evening's entertainment than it does on providing info for cinema buffs. To use the "recommendation feature" you start by telling the program the names of three movies that you like. The software is based upon exit interviews made of several thousand people leaving video stores around the U.S., and it will tell you the names of other movies favored by people who liked the same three titles you cited. Surveys were in depth and focused not only on specific titles but also on actors, directors and categories of films. The program then uses artificial intelligence techniques including fuzzy logic to tell you what other films you might like based on other people's experiences. It will produce up a list of suggestions for future viewing in one of 19 different subject areas (including 'adult' X rated entertainment). It also allows you to search by keywords to find various movies, but it has no photographs. And it includes filmclips of commercials for upcoming Paramount movies. |
