La Cité des échos [Fr] Orphée Multimédia 2000

This is an exclusive French adventure game, formally representing a modernized and altered (in terms of "changing roles") interpretation of the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, but in fact it is an educational program designed to improve the knowledge of the national language, disguised as a quest. It's a classic adventure: collect clues, solve puzzles while answering French exercises. You are in the shoes of a journalist investigating the disappearance of his bride. Beyond this intrigue, oh how hackneyed, you will have to do with a very well put together educational game. Under the guise of an investigation, you will have to complete homework that could have taken place in a classroom of an ordinary school. The virtue of this title is to offer them in a fun setting. For example, our heroine sees access to the outside world closed as long as she has not informed her employer of her departure. For that, it will be necessary to write a letter in due form. The graphics are of good quality and give the software a fairly immersive atmosphere. The whole is therefore pleasing although sometimes too academic in nature. The main character is a young girl Demo, a reporter for the newspaper "Les Echos du Monde". Her beloved, the saxophonist Theodore, suddenly mysteriously disappeared, and she, naturally, is determined to do everything to find him - but for this she will have to not only perform more or less traditional actions for the genre (having visited, among other things, the Opera, where he gave his last concert, and in Venice), but also to compose - and impeccably - rather long texts in total seven pieces. Actually, before the start, you are allowed to choose one of two modes: "Aventure", which is precisely a quest with an educational component formally integrated into its plot, and "Atelier", which is only a list of exercises. The action in the first of them is divided into several chapters. The game itself is basically a collection of drawn screens; moving around the locations occurs either by clicking on the edge of the space, or by clicking on the active points (as a result of which the heroine, for example, will enter a building). A significant part of the process is devoted to conversations with oncoming characters and solving various puzzles based on the information received from them (although the need to look for and use objects also takes place), however, as already mentioned above, after studying this or that material, you will have to write on your own seven times texts. The first such task will be drawing up a demo letter to the employer (followed by faxing) with a request to allow her to leave her house (apparently, the ban is associated with possible fear for her life - until this is done, it is impossible to leave the place of residence); then she will need to write a note about Theodore's last concert; etc.
