Temple of the Sun [J] Nihon Falcom / Unbalance Corp. 1999

This is one of the memorial game series that reproduces nostalgic masterpiece games such as "Xanadu" and "Romancia" that were also released from Falcom's work. Other companies' games include Messiah's "Langrisser I" and Taito's "Arkanoid". As an aside, the Temple of the Sun was also reprinted in " Falcom Classics II " released on Sega Saturn. In addition, the following year, it appeared as one of the scenarios in the Dreamcast version of " Sorcerian ". Temple of the Sun is an adventure game released on PC-8801 etc. in 1986, and is a sequel to " Aztec " released in 1985. The story is dedicated to the Maya people, indigenous inhabitants of Southern Mexico and Central America, rather than the Aztecs. The player controls a nameless adventurer who searches for the Sun Key, a mysterious ancient artifact which can unlock the secrets of the Mayan civilization. It's an adventure game which takes place in the ruins of the ancient city Chichen Itza on the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico. There is a top-down overworld on which the player can physically navigate the protagonist, entering temples and other locations. In such locations, the view switches to first-person perspective. The player interacts with the environment by selecting various verb commands ("Look", "Take", "Use", etc.), represented by icons, from a menu, and combining them with objects on the screen. In spite of its Japanese origins, the game features inventory item usage and puzzle-solving, which are more typical of Western-style adventures. At that time, the mainstream style of adventure was that the action was decided by text input (or selection) of the command, and the scenario progressed by switching the first scene. But in the temple of the sun, a map movement method such as RPG is adopted to select a place to enter, and at each place, a command is selected with an icon to act, which is a device that makes it easy to grasp the action mainly on the visual side. However, the difficulty level is higher than the appearance of the game, such as the need to use items without special hints, and the fact that it is not clear even though the game can not proceed anymore. The Temple of the Sun is by a programmer of " Ys " to be released later. It is also a work in which Masaya Hashimoto participated, and the original form of Ys can be seen everywhere. The gold pedestal that is dropped in the Temple of the Sun can be found in the lake in the grasslands of Ys, and the title song " Temple del sol " of the Temple of the Sun is played in the rare harmonica song. In this reprinted version of the port, you can select the game mode from the "original mode", which is a port of the original (PC-8801) version almost as it is, and the "arrange mode", which arranges graphics and music. Since the music performance uses a CD-DA track, it can also be listened to on a CD player.
