FPS Year Summary 1993

Doom started the whole modding and multiplayer game craze. This game added improved textures, variations in height (such as stairs the player's character could climb) and lighting effects such as flickering lights and patches of total darkness, creating a more believable 3D environment. In some areas, Doom removed the ceiling altogether to create the outdoor environments that were generally lacking in previous genre games. Doom allowed competitive matches between multiple players, termed "deathmatches", and the game was responsible for the word's subsequent entry into the video gaming lexicon. Doom has been considered the most important first person shooter ever made: it was highly influential not only on subsequent shooter games but on video gaming in general. Multiplayer gaming, which is now integral to the first person shooter genre, was first achieved successfully on a large scale with Doom. Doom was also one of the earliest FPS games to gain an active community of fans producing add-on maps. While its combination of gory violence, dark humor and hellish imagery garnered acclaim from critics, these attributes also generated controversy from religious groups, with other commentators labelling the game a "murder simulator" and school shootings such as in the Columbine High School massacre being blamed on playing Doom or other FPS games.
Alone In The Dark, although not an FPS, pioneered the use of 3D polygonal character models in games. Although the characters were flat-shaded and blocky, 3D graphics since then have become exponentially more lifelike. It single-handedly created the survival-horror genre: the third-person, horror-themed action-adventure game characterized by its moody, atmospheric settings and gameplay that consists of equal parts action and puzzle-solving.

Doom Alone In The Dark

First Person Shooters

Blake Stone: Aliens Of Gold JAM Productions / Apogee [top]

One year after Wolfenstein 3D, the same engine was used in another game. This was released one week before id Software took over the world with the shareware release of Doom. Doom squashed it; Blake Stone sold poorly despite positive reviews. id even had a stake in Blake Stone, it build the texture mapping engine for the game. The game takes place in the future. You are agent "Blake", who has to accomplish some missions. The goal is to stop the evil doctor "Goldfire", who created some aliens. The game consists of six episodes, each of which features 11 levels, nine regular and two secret. The elimination of all enemies on the current floor or the collection of all treasure items are optional objectives that provide bonuses upon completion. In the game ceiling and floor are texturized, which was new. There were no terrain heights, but you could use elevators to get back into levels you already played. Special level features include: locked doors which can be opened by four types of colored keys (gold, green, yellow, blue), one-way doors, secret rooms accessible through pushable wall blocks, and teleports that instantly take the player into another location within the level. There's also lighting effects and an automap function, sorely missed in Wolfenstein 3D. Calling this automap also shows your your current progress, rating and percentage of enemies killed. And there are crates you can shoot. They will explode and sometimes reveal some goodies. Another unique feature of the game is the fact that Dr. Goldfire appears periodically in certain sections on different levels and will actually attack Stone. After being hit a few times, he activates a teleporter on his watch and escapes. There are several weapons available, more than there are in Wolfenstein 3D. Also included are features such as clipping, and invisibility, and auto-mapping. Really new were in-game characters, who were not always hostile but sometimes even gave hints. Because of this, the pure "shoot everything that moves"- scheme was not valid anymore. Besides this, the game was not state of the art. The graphics were out-dated and did not look as good as others of that time, Doom and Terminator Rampage. A nice game of that time, but it did not manage to stand out.

Bram Stoker's Dracula Probe Entertainment, Psygnosis / Sony [top]

In this shooter, you have to deal with undead. Not only with Dracula, as the title foreshadows, but that would be some untypical 3D shooter, anyways. Though it has the license of the Francis Ford Coppola movie based on Stoker's novel, there is little relation to events in the movie. Legions of the undead are rising from their graves, and it's your job to put a stop to the madness. To do this, you must purify the many creature-spawning graves on Dracula's estate while fending off the horrendous monsters along the way. Having Psygnosis’ name on the box can’t rescue Dracula from the tedious gameplay – rooms in the estate begin to resemble one another after a while, and puzzles are quite simplistic and boring (find key X to unlock door Y). I looked for that game for an eternity, because I played the demo version in 1993, but never found the full game those days. Sometimes I even thought I just dreamed that game and it never existed ;-). Anyways, here you can take a look yourself if you like.

Curse of the Catacombs / Catacomb Apocalypse SoftDisk / Froggman [top]

Allegedly this is only somewhat polished versions of Catacomb Apocalypse.
A magic and monster themed first person shooter built on an advanced version of the Wolfenstein 3D engine. Curse sends the player into 16 levels of mazes culminating in a battle with the evil sorcerer Nemesis. Features that Curse added to the early FPS genre included enemies that climb out of the ground and walls, treasures that are destroyed by wayward shots, and a "radar" scope that shows anything sneaking up on the player from behind. The levels range from standard dungeon settings and a creepy forest to flaming infernos and a high tech prison.

Deadline (cancelled) Microflash [top]

This was a cancelled game for which only a beta exists. It's similar in many ways to a Wolfenstein 3D add-on. It has a futuristic scenario where your hero has agreed to participate in a cryo-experiment, and was immersed in a kind of suspended animation but somehow did not wake up until hundreds of years later. He discovers that the center (and possibly the whole earth) is full of different kinds of evil aliens who are very hostile, and has to destroy them. There are several types of weapons, several types of enemies, and three kinds of objects for collecting and using (including mines). On the gui at bottom of the screen you can see what weapons you have chosen at the moment, and a nice radar of surrounding area with green dots represnting enemy locations. There's no sound in this version.

Doom ID Software [top]

Doom made an impact. In the USA it made headlines because of the success of Wolfenstein 3D, while in Germany the previews were spare since the predecessor Wolfenstein only was quietly successful. Those who played the predecessor and only had a 386 system or a slower 486 system did not have much fun with it, since it required relatively new hardware. They had to deal with low resolution graphics and that made it difficult even to determine what was an enemy and what not. But after some time when the player got to know the game, it entertained the player a lot. Lots of light- and shadow effects made Doom much more realistic than Wolfenstein, and the fully texturised levels were made really well and was enhanced by the height levels a lot, which was completely new. The story (even if it is completely negligible for the game): On the two moons of Mars , Phobos and Deimos, scientist teams are working on a teleport project where you can beam yourself from one point to another within a moment. The first tests are failing and contact to the station breaks up. A group of marines is sent to see after the situation - and is attacked. After that it is the player's turn to clear the situation, at first armed with only fists and a pistol. The weapons like the gatling, the plasma-cannon and the BFG (Big Fucking Gun), as well as the chainsaw and the legendary pump action gun are classics today. The players were able to have multiplayer fun at low cost using a null modem cable. You were able to play DOOM together in cooperative mode or in deathmatch mode, fighting against each other. Because some of the games source code was released shortly after the game, new tools appeared fast which simplified the multiplayer configuration and made it possible to create and add new levels to the game. Lots of homebrewed new levels were made - at first mostly just modified levels, later completely new episodes and even total conversions with new graphics and sounds. Doom was published as shareware. You were able to play the first of 3 episodes, and could buy the complete game only from ID software directly, but soon it was sold by retailers (illegally, most of the time). Anyway, DOOM made a record as the most-copied game in history. Everybody talked about it, and who talked about it probably owned it too. With Doom, PC games got much more known, but got the reputation to be dull, brutal and vulgar. Doom was sort of simple-minded, of course. There were no serious quests. You just had to find key cards and skulls which opened doors and so on. No real thinking was required. Doom was made to entertain in a simple way. It was fun without much complexity (as long as you had no problem with adult rated content like blood etc. and did not see the monsters as creatures similar to human beings. And so was born the modern multiplayer FPS and it succeeded!

Freaks! Angel Ortega / Triptico [top]

Freaks is a 3D game for MS/DOS written in 1993 by three Spanish guys - Angel Ortega, Manuel Zamora and Antonio Guerrero using a Wolf3D type of engine. It was released as shareware but now you can download it for free. It's a complete game with 4 big episodes and a great variety of nice looking monsters. In 2002 a remake was started though it's not fully complete. Some new features were implemented: full angle rotation (not limited to the original 90 degree steps), engine improvements (depth cue lighting, better sounds management), map definitions and some game logic rewritten in a higher-level language (using Filp [3]), more ambientation (rain, lightning storms, etc). The game idea is mostly unchanged; the only difference is that life is not replenished after killing a monster, but after passing over a corpse (as if "feeding" from it).

In Extremis Blue Sphere (France) / US Gold [top]

A Doom-clone hardly noticed when it was released. From the makers of Fade to Black, first 3D Shooter for them. In Extremis is probably the most obscure game Delphine ever developed, and for good reason. The plot and sound effects are obviously copied from hit movie Alien. You play a space pilot who crashes into an asteroid and flee your ship into what seems to be an abandoned cruiser nearby. The cruiser turns out to be filled with mutilated human bodies and hostile aliens, which you of course must fight to get out alive.

A dull game which attempts to mix the shooter and adventure genres with not much success. You crash on a deserted island full of zombies and must escape. It has Wolfenstein type graphics and you can freely roam and shoot things until you come to an area which you must manipulate objects and use your inventory at which point the 3d view becomes static in order to do so.

Jurassic Park Ocean [top]

This game is a mixture of 2D and 3D. In the first part of the game you have to find and rescue the kids in the park. You are playing this part in top-down style. If you succeeded and brought the kids to the hotel, the lights extinguish. Now the game switches to 3D view, where you have to power up the lights again, armed with a shotgun. The top-down view sucks, and the 3D view is not that good, too. It is more clever to avoid the raptors instead of wasting ammunition on them. There is no save function, too >:(

Ken's Labyrinth (Walken) Ken Silverman / Epic Megagames [top]

Ken Silverman's debut was published when he was only 17 years old. He got famous with the several times licensed "Build" engine, seen first in Duke Nukem 3D. In Ken's Labyrinth, you have to rescue your dog and the world along the way. The graphics remind one of the Wolfenstein engine, but the monsters are drawn worse. Generally, the game doesn't bubble over with ideas, that can be seen already in the title. ;-) In November 1999, the full version was released as freeware.

Lethal Tender Pie in the Sky / Froggman, Expert Software [top]

Lethal Tender's graphics are similar to those of Wolfenstein 3D. Bad boy Nick Hunter must thwart the evil Thorne Devereaux's plan to coat U.S. currency with a time delayed explosive by infiltrating his base and mowing down swarms of identical nameless guards. Shoot guards, collect colored keys to open doors, pick up more powerful weapons — you know the drill. The game does set itself apart from other shareware FPS with the addition of inventory screen, some inventive level design, and some semblance of plot development.

Pathways Into Darkness {MAC} Bungie Studios [top]

In the spring of 1993 the US government receives a distressing transmission from alien creatures that warn of an alien threat hidden deep beneath an ancient pyramid in Yucatan, where an asteroid crashed aeons ago. The protagonist of the game has been chosen as part of the special ops team selected to drop into the zone and deal with the threat. Unfortunately, the player got separated from his group, and now must accomplish his mission on his own. This is a first-person shooter exclusively for MAC that places the player in the shoes of a special forces operative who has to advance through several dungeons filled with horrifying creatures (some lifted from Lovecraftian lore) in order to save the world. The game includes dialogues with non-playable characters, inventory management, and other assorted means of interacting with the game world (such as examining, using, etc.). The overall design puts an emphasis on puzzle-solving over firefights, as the player character is usually underpowered when fighting against his foes. Bungie later went on to make the popular Marathon and Halo FPS series. In 2013, it was "painstakingly recreated" for MAC OsX by Bruce Morrison, a former employee from Ngmoco and Freeverse, for his company, Man Up Time Studios. Mark Levin worked with him on the coding for Pathways' new version. In 2019, a Windows port to the Aleph One engine was released by W'rkncacnter.

ShadowCaster RavenSoftware / Origin [top]

In this action & role playing game, your character is able to morph himself, change his appearance, size and attributes. Each shape has its own abilities and weaknesses. They range from Maorin, a 6-legged cat that can claw and see in the infrared, to Opsis, a floating eyeball who is physically weak but can cast many powerful spells, to Kahpa the frog man and even SSair the fire dragon. You start out with Kirt who can kick, jump, and punch. He is also the only form in which you can regenerate "power," which is the manna that you need to be able to cast spells, morph, and to stay in any other form besides human. The absolute necessity of manna adds a fun element of strategic planning, since you must return to Kirt form once in a while to regenerate. The graphics are really nice, but the game suffers from the enemies' bad AI. Cleanse your homeworld's city of evil as you progress toward stopping the mighty Malkor. Wolfenstein-3D meets Ultima Underworld is a fairly accurate description of gameplay: 3D action mixed with RPG elements and puzzle solving. The puzzles are a lot of fun to solve, especially since they are not so much quests for items, as they are about finding out what to do with the items you already have, and what form you have to morph into to accomplish the goals. The game features typical AD&D monsters as well as original ones that must be killed in a certain way. The CD-ROM enhanced version features enhanced redbook audio narration, two new levels, and 3-D rendered cutscenes. I played it through, but it doesn't satisfy a lot and has no cool moments. At some points I was shooting about 15 minutes at one enemy who got stuck until he died, finally. It's nothing special, not even for those times.

Space Hulk Games Workshop / Electronic Arts [top]

Space Hulk is based on the popular Warhammer board game which involves strategically controlling up to 4 space marines at a time (each with its own 3d view window). You can freeze the action if things get too rough to enable you to give orders to your team, but you can only do this so many times in one mission. Each mission has an objective such as a bughunt or finding an object and escaping. It takes some thinking to strategically use the different weapons available and find the best way to achieve the goal. It used digitised speech over the PC speaker without a sound card, and reminds one of the scary atmosphere of the film Aliens. Nine new missions, new cinematic animations, along with new digitised sound effects and speech (which required a sound card) were added to the CD-ROM version.

Tanks' Destroyer Gamos Ltd. [top]

This simulates a unit of legendary 45-mm anti-tank gun M-42 used by Soviet forces in World War II. During a campaign, the player should repel attacks of Nazi tanks such as Tiger, Panther, and suppress enemy firing points. Under the player's command, the gun can fire at selected enemy targets and change its position. The enemies are retaliating, causing damage to gun's personnel (pointer, loader, driver) and equipment (gun itself). Critical state of the gun is shown by cracks in the sight optics. Recharging takes time, especially if the loader is injured. On the screen the player can observe a three-dimensional panorama of the battlefield (terrain, enemy tanks and firing points, results of shooting) in observation / aiming modes or reconnaissance data on a flat map (terrain, own dislocation, location of enemy facilities). Points are awarded for wrecked tanks and firing points. Top scores are stored in the record table. When all the enemy objects are destroyed, the player occupies the zone and moves to the next level. The main goal is to capture the bridge. But much more often the game overs with the heroic death of the unit.

Terror of the Catacombs / Catacomb Armageddon SoftDisk / Froggman [top]

Terror of The Catacombs is the final chapter of the Catacomb 3-D series. The evil Nemesis has discovered how to use Time Gates and has trapped you once again down in the catacombs preventing you to stop him. He has the ability to send you back and forth through time where you have to challenge creatures from the very ends of eternity. There are new no features compared to Curse of the Catacombs... a few new monsters and an entirely new episode. Despite what may be considered a shortcoming, this remains my favorite Catacomb 3-D game in the series for the enhanced level layout alone.
The game was the first HUB-Based videogame ever created.

Third Person Shooters

Alien Breed (Alien Breed: Special Edition 92) Team17 Software Ltd. [top]

Alien Breed is a top-down science fiction shooter somewhat inspired by the movie Alien in terms of plot and atmosphere. Gameplay, though, was obviously inspired by the Atari arcade classic Gauntlet. It's actually a port of the Amiga title Alien Breed: Special Edition 92. The game tells a typical sci-fi story of an alien invasion on the space station ISRC-4. Two space marines, Johnson and Stone, are the only human beings left to clear the base of aliens. Moving around an alien-infested complex in a top-down view, you must at all times keep an eye not only on your energy level, but also be conservative with ammunition. Though you will find new ammo cartridges strewn around the levels, they are consumed quickly by respawning aliens that may come crawling out of the floors and walls when you least expect it. On the floors, you will also find keys for passing through locked doors. Keys must also be used with care, or you may find yourself locked out of a room containing the remaining keys that you will need in order to complete the level. Other doors are one-way, and will electrocute you if you try to pass it in the other direction. Other major bonuses found on the floor are emergency kits for restoring your health, and credits. The credits come in handy when you find an Infotex terminal. There, you can access information about your current mission and your vital statistics, as well as buy supplies such as ammunition, weapons and keys. Music is forfeited in this game, in favour of ambience sounds from machinery, machine gun sounds and the sounds of the aliens running around the base. In 2017, a fan-made remake was done By Gabriel Crowe using Pico-8.

Arnie Savage: Combat Commando / Arnie 2 Zeppelin Games Limited [top]

This is an isometric action game. Although it's obvious to which Hollywood actor the game's name alludes, Arnie 2 is not a licensed title and not based on any movie. It is the sequel to the Amiga / C64 platform game Arnie (1992). Unlike the previous title it has been developed in-house by Zeppelin. Fast reflexes and a lust for violence are required for success here. Your average muscleman shoots and bombs his way through four enemy-infested territories: Shut down a chemical plant by blowing up enough pipeline valves. Clear an airfield from enemy soldiers, tanks and helicopters. Climb from battleship to battleship in a hostile harbor. And finally, rescue as many prisoners as possible from a jungle POW camp. Naturally, the levels are crawling with enemies: from simple infantry armed with rifles, mortars or rocket launchers to MG teams, missile batteries and tanks. Most of the opponents are stationary and stolidly fire in a single direction; however, foxholes spew out cannon-fodder at a constant rate. To destroy such nests or efficiently dispatch groups of soldiers, Arnie has a (limited) supply of grenades. Some deceased foes drop more powerful weapons as well as invaluable first aid kits and extra lives.

Battle Europe / Tanke Da Juezhan T-Time Technology Corp. [top]

Taking a cue from Tank Battalion, this game (whose Chinese title translates to Battle of the Bulge) updates the "tank in a maze" recipe with an isometric perspective and a WWII setting. The basic premise remains the same: patrol your territory as the enemy forces pour in, keep your armored war machine in one piece, and defend your base at all costs. The layout of each level determines the course of the action, though it can be modified by destroying the scenery. The player may choose either the Allied or Axis side. Each level represents a territory: the Allies start out from North Africa, whereas the Axis powers begin their offensive from Germany. Apart from the usual tanks, the enemy also employs mine-laying vehicles, while the player has the option to call in air-strikes; various power-ups may be obtained by destroying enemy forces. Blasting all the enemies to oblivion will clear the level... but if they get your base, it's game over. A password feature can be used to resume a game at a particular level (though you don't retain your score).

The game consists of racing in several voxel-space created stages and gaining money while at the same time trying to get your girl back and uncover the plot behind the CyberRace. The races are played from a 1st person perspective, and features the designs of famed artist/designer Syd Mead.

Hired Guns DMA Design Limited / Psygnosis Limited [top]

Hired Guns is a neat futuristic RPG that allows you to control 4 characters simultaneously via 4 windows (see screenshots). The plot, which would send your band of galactic mercenaries on a wide variety of missions, is nonexistent at the start but develops into an interesting story of intergalactic espionage and warfare. What made the game stand out, even to this day, was the multi-player elements. The screen showed the viewpoints of 4 characters - you either controlled them all yourself, or could have a different person controlling each one. Each character is individually controllable and occupies their own square, unlike Dungeon Master, in which the entire party occupies the same square. Each character can be made to follow another character, simplifying large group movements when only one player is controlling the party. The game area is in real 3D, and monster/enemy AI have free movement around each level environment. This is unlike other games of its time, in which enemies cannot pursue characters up stairs. An array of heavy weapons (including a robot sentry, similar to that seen in Aliens Special Edition), incendiary devices and mines can be used to take out the enemy (or friends!) either on the same level as the player or below. Players have to manage their inventory, too, as the amount of items to carry is limited. Also included are devices called "Psionic Amps" that can be used to create strange effects on the player or on the world around them — e.g. a Psionic Amp can be used underwater to create an area of air so the player can breathe. The depth of the gameplay is what catapulted the game to classic status. The level of cooperation needed, and using different players to complete different tasks, is something that all recent 3D games have missed. Being a multi-player game, it was only a matter of time before you turned on the person who kept falling off the cliff, and shot him in the back. This soon turned into a full-scale death-match, even though the game didn't support them as such. You could also customise the character graphics to your heart's content. The variety of weapons, monsters, and locations make up for repetitive graphics, below-average writing, and scarce character interactions.

MegaRace Cryo Interactive Entertainment / Software Toolworks, Inc., The [top]

In the not so distant future, the entire world has been engulfed and mesmerized by virtual reality. Everyone's wildest dreams can come true thanks to this stunning technology. That's why Virtual World Broadcast Television's new show MegaRace is so popular and one of the highest ranked television shows currently running. Hosted by Lance Boyle, contestants, or Enforcers choose a vehicle and go head to head against gang members and their goons. They compete for glory and prizes in a world filled with various racetracks built around cites, power plants, aquatic seas and more. But this isn't the reason the show is so popular--what's the fun in regular racing? That's why there's virtual weapons, such as oil slicks and missiles to thrill the vast audience of watchers. It's violent, it's chaotic, it's fast and it's ultimately thrilling. But of course, no one gets hurt--or do they? MegaRace is a 3rd person racer and features over 15 tracks with fully rendered backdrops, turns, weapons and more. There's over 20 minutes of FMV sequences with the over-the-top, exciting and humorous (or numbingly annoying) host Lance Boyle. Add to that a thundering soundtrack and ultra smooth and fast gameplay and you've got one wild experience at your hands. Remember: watch your back, stay focused on the road and most importantly, don't let the ratings drop. MegaRace was inspired by virtual reality. In a way, it's a sarcastic view of a world obsessed with this technology. It depicts all the bad things that could happen and how mindless we would all become if we let virtual reality run our lives. Not only this, but the game also pokes fun at a society addicted to television. This game came with some Packard Bell computers in the early to mid 90's.

Seal Team Electronic Arts [top]

This is a tactical shooter, in which you can command you own team, thus similar to the Rainbow Six series. It's a realistic multi-camera simulation of American operations in the Vietnam war. This game combined roleplaying elements (as you controlled a single character giving orders to the others, whose stats could improve with time) with varied missions and sound effects that totally immersed you in the environment. The graphics are primitive by today's standards. You have the ability to choose from many different options at the start menu, such as real or unlimited ammunition, enhanced enemy skill, and even the damage potential of your own shots. For each mission you have the choice of selecting your team members (excluding the point man), as well as the equipment each man will take with him. All soldiers have specific skill ratings and these will improve while doing missions.

Star Wars: Rebel Assault LucasArts [top]

The Galactic Empire has been beaten once, but you've only just begun. You are Rookie One, and you must completely crush the evil empire from the rooster of your T16 Skyhopper. You'll first fly a training run through Beggar's Canyon, and then have your first space battle against TIE Fighters deep in space. The giant AT-ATs are on the attack again and you'll fight them over the icy landscape of Hoth. Your squad of fighters will then do the trench run over the Death Star, to kill Vader and his gang. Star Wars: Rebel Assault was the first CD ROM-only game published by Lucasarts, and is one of the oldest titles to make use of extensive full motion video (FMV) on the PC. Although the scenario, the plot, and the variety of missions were considered neither original nor rich, the game was valued for the technical details, since it featured digitized footage and music from the original movies, and full speech. The video was used to display pre-rendered 3D graphics that were far ahead of what a PC could render in real-time at the time. Developers pre-rendered various environments and battles and the player flew through these environments. Unfortunately because it was pre-rendered 3D graphics, the level of player control was extremely limited. In fact, the player could not stray from the path in more than a few branched areas and was usually limited to only aiming the crosshairs at enemies.

3DWorld Robert Burke [top]

3DWorld consists of two games in one package, an early attempt at creating a 3D environment. The games are an asteroid shooter called Voyageur IV and a table-tennis game 3D Ping Pong. Both are launched from a common menu, together with a setup screen and an introduction to the 3D view system TunnelVISION. In the asteroid shooter, you are flying an armed spaceship tasked with protecting the Earth from incoming asteroids. On the first level there are ten asteroids, and you have three spaceships at your disposal. In order to hit, you must aim and fire the ships gun through a crosshair displayed in space in front of the asteroid path. If you fail, either the spaceship breaks up in the collision, or Earth is destroyed. If you succeed, the next mission takes you through hyperspace toward the source of the asteroids, but you must dodge an asteroid-belt on the way. As you pass the asteroid belt, your hyperdrive breaks, and now you must find and pickup spare-parts among the asteroids. (who dropped them there?) In the table-tennis game, you play a match against the computer, it ends when you have a difference in score of 5, 10 or 15 points (dependent on settings), with the table in a closed box, so the ball can bounce off the sides as well.

Ashes of Empire Midnight / GameTek, Inc. [top]

The Confederation of Syndicalist Republics is the setting for this strategy and combat game. Much like the similar looking USSR at the time, the society is crumbling, and you are an upstart aiming to take over power for yourself... erm, I mean, aiming to bring peace, harmony, prosperity and happiness. You start off in a small coastal province, and must progress by meeting people and negotiating to get them on your side – sometimes the sword is mightier than the pen, sometimes not. You must ensure that the more militant locals are pacified, and that ethnic minorities are looked after. While those sections are all strategic, there are also some vector-based combat sections. These ensure that brawn is required along with brains, and give the game some variety. As Mike Singleton's last and biggest game, it features a much-improved engine first seen in its spiritual predecessor Midwinter, with over 6,000 unique characters, vast 3D gameworld, and over 9,000 locations. You must select a tactic to bring order while avoiding a nuclear conflict with an embittered people; both strategic prowess and psychological insights are key to winning the game. Despite cumbersome interface and a steep learning curve, it's Singleton at his best.

Eye of the Storm Rebellion Developments Ltd. [top]

This is the first game from Rebellion before they went on to later develop Rainbow Six and Aliens Vs. Predator. It is 2124, and alien life has been found in our own solar system. The location of this life is just as surprising as its existence; There is a whole ecosystem living within the incredibly hostile atmosphere of the gas giant, Jupiter. When these findings became public, and the hostile nature of some of the creatures became known, the 'eye' of Jupiter was declared a frontier zone. Of course, it wasn't long before someone thought of a great way to make money out of our new neighbours and the first Hunters were dispatched from earth. Now TVs across the globe display nightly broadcasts of Hunters engaged in blood-thirsty combat with the inhabitants of Jupiter. Does no-one care that these new life-forms are being wiped out in the name of mass entertainment? Well, I.C.E. care. The Interstellar Conservation Executive has sent you, its newest recruit, off to Jupiter to study and document all the lifeforms you can find. You make money not by killing them, but by filming their actions. You can then use this money to upgrade your ship's engines and descend lower into Jupiter's atmosphere, to discover even weirder creatures. You'll also find people who want you to collect rare objects for them (also in exchange for cash), you'll find strange alien artefacts that may or may not help you in your quest and you'll probably have to engage in a few fights with the Hunters. It's a little sick, but these images will be broadcast to the audiences back home, too, so you'll make more money from that. Still, better to kill an evil Hunter from earth than a peaceful space whale from Jupiter, right? This fast-paced combat simulator has the fastest, smoothest full screen 3D graphics system yet seen and an unique "picture-in-picture" view. It has 64 dangerous missions to perform in an area 1600 by 1600 km.

As well as the campaign option, there is the modem play which lets you can fly against your friends via modem. This game is actually very similar to MiG 29: the cockpit is very much the same, and the graphics and sound are nearly the same too. Controls, however, are slightly different, but are similar to the controls in Veritech. G-Force also allows you to use different types of controls: keyboard, mouse, and, of course, the joystick. If you've played and liked MiG 29 and/or SU-25 Stormovik, or possibly are a just a flight sim fan like me, then you should give G-Force a try. It's neither as realistic nor polished as these two games, but it's a good sim in its own right.

Controlling multiple different weapons the player must destroy enemy mechs before they try the same. Separate shields on the front and back of the mech must protect players from getting destroyed instantly. The player can choose between different mechs and multiple difficulty levels. A map of the level is shown at the bottom of the screen at all times, but the player can only detect the enemy when he's in radar range. A human astronaut was sent by the OESI (the Organization of Earth's Special Intelligences) on an exploration mission. The ship gets stranded in the orbit shortly following the launch, due to a malfunctioning engine. The protagonist is rescued by Granger Tinker Brin O'Keef, a member of the galactic Alliance, which fights a highly advanced mechanized race known as the Korok, whose goal is to destroy all life in the galaxy. The hero decides to join the Alliance and help them in their battle against the Korok. Nomad is a space exploration, trading, and combat game. Its basic gameplay mechanics revolve around trading with various alien races (based on bartering rather than currency), as well as defending the ship against hostile crafts in an action-oriented space combat. Compared to other space simulations, the game is more story-driven, featuring scripted conversations with characters and information-gathering. The game world includes several hundreds of planets and eleven alien races. Eight planes are simulated, from Hurricanes and Spitfires to Ju88s and BF110s, each with their own cockpit displays and characteristics. When playing as the Germans, protecting the fragile and slow Ju88 bombers is crucial. There is a practice mode with indestructible planes, realism levels can be adjusted, and time can be accelerated while an enemy plane is not in sight.

Star Wars: X-Wing LucasArts Entertainment Company LLC [top]

X-Wing is a space combat simulation, the first in the Star Wars universe. From the cockpits of X-Wing, Y-Wing and A-Wing starfighters, players fight for the Rebel Alliance in their struggle against the evil Galactic Empire. Unlike earlier titles in the genre like Wing Commander, X-Wing employs a polygonal 3D engine: flat-shaded polygons are combined with bitmaps only for explosion effects. The game features a comprehensive training element. Before starting on real missions, players should navigate the pilot proving grounds, also known as 'Maze', by flying through a course of doorways set atop platforms in space, preferably without missing any, all while keeping an eye on the tight time limit. Higher levels add additional challenges like hostile laser turrets. Next to the 'Maze', there are simulated historical missions (six for each of the three fighters) that prepare for the complex missions in the rest of the game. The main part of the game consists of three separate campaigns, called Tours of Duty. The Tours can be played in any order, even though they build on each other story-wise: Tour I, 'A New Ally', tells of the Rebellion's search for political allies in their fight against the Empire, while the Emperor launches Operation Strike Fear, a major offensive against the Rebels. Tour II, 'The Great Search' chronicles the Rebels' search for the plans to the Empire's new superweapon, the Death Star. Tour III, 'The Gathering Storm', tells of their efforts to find and destroy the battle station. Animated cutscenes are featured after certain missions to continue the story. Each Tour consists of around a dozen missions, which include a wide variety of objectives. There are standard strike, escort and defense assignments, but also reconnaissance flights - just scanning ships without attacking them - or capture operations - disabling enemy ships, then protecting the transport carrying the strike team during the takeover. The game of course culminates in the famous attack on the Death Star. The three flyable fighters all handle differently and are thus more or less suitable for the different types of missions. The X-Wing is heavily armed and armored, and is usually used on strike missions. The Y-Wing is slower and less well protected, but is the only ship equipped with ion cannons, necessary for disabling ships. With its high speed and maneuverability, the A-Wing is ideal for recon and intercept missions. Next to lasers and ion cannons, the fighters are armed with limited amounts of warheads: proton torpedoes are slow and highly destructive, while concussion missiles are faster, but yield less damage. A unique feature of the game is energy management: Energy must be divided between engines, weapons and shields. At the standard settings, weapons and shields don't recharge - energy must be diverted from the engines for that, slowing the ship. On the other hand, putting more power into the engines adds speed, but drains shields and guns. Energy can also be transferred between the systems, boosting weapons power at the expense of shields or vice versa. Space is populated by many ships besides the player's, most of which are well-known from the movies. The Empire will usually launch waves of TIE Fighters, Interceptors and Bombers from Star Destroyers. The Rebels employ large Mon Calamari cruisers and Corellian Corvettes. In use by both sides are Nebulon-B escort frigates and Lambda-class shuttles. Some ships not seen in the movies include the Imperial assault gunboat, the stormtrooper transport and bulk freighters. Friendly fighters will sometimes accompany the player, and can be given specific orders.

This is a game of exploration and conquest from Mike Singleton, the author of the similarly-focused Midwinter and The Lords of Midnight. As the title implies, Starlord is set in a science-fiction world, as opposed to the fantasy universes of those previous games. Your family are Starlords of a single planet, but seek dominance of a vast space consisting of 1000 individually-ruled planets. If you are to come out on top you will have to manage resources across each of your starbases, using revenue to ensure enough fuel, food and minerals are available. Trade with other leaders and form tactical agreements. To actually take over planets, you will have to lead your ships into space combat, which is played out in multiple-view 3D.

Strike Commander ORIGIN Systems, Inc. [top]

Spawned from the success of Wing Commander, this takes the same style of gameplay and brings it back in time to a much closer future. Its 3D graphics-engine used both gouraud shading and texture-mapping on both aircraft-models and terrain, an impressive feat at the time. Significant plot elements were presented through in-game cut-scene animations, a hallmark storytelling vehicle from Chris Robert's previous Wing Commander games. You lead a rag-tag mercenary fighter squadron, trying to make a living in a dangerous, chaotic world. Pretty and simplified dogfights in your blackmarket-purchased F-16s is supplemented by interactive cutscenes where you converse with your teammates, or go into town to buy new contracts. Fly against a very diverse set of aircraft as you find yourself fighting for and against many of the world's major nations. The concern of managing your team's armament expeditures and keeping the group in the black adds a side to the game that few simulators have. Featuring an improved engine over Wing Commander 2, this was the first in a series of three games that attempted to take the 'Commander' series in a non-sci-fi direction. Ultimately, they failed to capture the same crowd as the WC series did. A CD-ROM release later in the year included the game plus Tactical Operations addon (21 new missions, some new planes and General MIDI support), an additional opening cinematic and menu to choose between these two products, and digitized speech for every character (a feature which expands on what was available in the Speech Pack). It also fixed things such as game speed issues in the original release.

The year is 2050. The ocean is the next frontier, and war inevitably has reached there. As an independent mercenary working for a corporate conglomerate, the player has to pilot the latest fighter subs to protect the corporate interests, so they can get rewarded with cold hard cash. With 5 different theater of operations (of varying difficulty) and an interesting mix of aerial and submarine tactics, this game can be described as Strike Commander under the sea, without the narrative. Each campaign has multiple missionss held together by an in-depth storyline. The need for combat will arise more often than not and survival will require paying close attention to the varied North Pacific training scenarios provided to bring you up to speed. Each of the campaigns takes you to a different underwater environment. Locales include the North Atlantic, Antarctic, the Sea of Japan and the South China Sea. In addition to the aspect of submarine simulation, it contains aspects of combat on both strategic and tactical levels as well as elements encountered in flight warfare. The goal of the player in each campaign, as an independent submariner, is the accumulation of hard cash earned for completed missions.

TFX was one of the precursor combat flight simulators that helped to define the standards of modern combat flight simulators, together with Tornado, F14 Fleet Defender and the Falcon series. TFX was programmed by the British company Digital Image Design and published by Ocean Software in 1993. Piloting a F-117A, Eurofighter 2000 or F-22 Superstar, you play as a UN fighter pilot flying for the fictional, United Nations Air Force flying missions in one of five theatres (Colombia, Somalia, Libya, the Balkans and also the South Georgia Islands). The tour of duty was designed to offer a "soap opera" approach, where actions from the players would affect the world and following missions, as well as reaction in the front page of journals according to what the player did.

War in the Gulf Oxford Digital Enterprises Ltd. / Empire Software [top]

This is the third game in the tank combat series, following from Team Yankee (whose story and setting came from a book) and Pacific Islands (set in an imaginary 1995 war). The third game imagines a situation in which Iraq invades Kuwait for a second time. The series' main distinguishing feature was the way you always viewed all 4 tanks in a platoon at the same time, via a split screen. Action here is purely mouse-driven. The AI has been significantly updated from previous games in the series. A full roster of tanks and weapons are included, with Iraq mainly using Soviet machinery. A major consideration involves destroying particular buildings for money, and preventing other particular ones being destroyed, also for financial reasons.

Wing Commander Academy ORIGIN Systems, Inc. [top]

Wing Commander Academy puts players into the role of a fresh young recruit at the Confederation Academy, where new pilots must test their skills in the simulator. Unlike other Wing Commander games, Wing Commander Academy features no storyline or campaign. Instead players may play through simple dogfight missions or build "waypoints" on an interface similar to the radar view. Using this mission builder, the player may place objects that include friendly fighters, enemy fighters, enemy capital ships, space stations and ejected pilots. Wing Commander Academy's controls and graphics are almost directly copied from Wing Commander II. Similar to that game, the player engages in a first person space battle against Kilrathi forces in 360 space. Players are able to choose different ships, weapon types and wingmen.

Wing Commander: Privateer ORIGIN Systems, Inc. / Electronic Arts, Inc. [top]

On the fringe of Human space, near the Kilrathi border, the industrial machine is running full-tilt to feed the war effort, and there is a lot of shipping, pirates, and Retros (fanatical religious nuts who wants to destroy technology), military, militia, merchants, mercenaries, and privateers. In the darkness, a battle between ships has woken up something ancient, powerful, and deadly. You are a privateer. Start with the lowly scout, and upgrade to one of the three other superior ships: Galaxy (superior cargo space), Orion (superior protection), or Centurion (superior offense). Buy optional equipment such as armor, engines, shields, weapons, launchers for torpedoes/missiles, and MUCH MUCH more. Take on missions (multiple sources, from the cheapest mission computer, to fixers who has the toughest but most rewarding missions) and earn money for upgrades. Use spare cargo room to trade commodities to further add to your account. Missions can vary from search and destroy to Fedex (i.e. delivery) to bounty hunting, and more. Privateer is set in the Wing Commander universe, but is more of a free-form game similar to Elite. While there is a central plot, you can deviate from it somewhat and you can continue playing after you finish the main plot. It also has the infamous talking heads dialog Origin pioneered in Wing Commander, this time with higher resolution and more natural look, and still has the lip-sync. This has a semi-interactive movie quality to it since some of your actions play a big role in how the game plays out. In fact, the only way you can really advance the story is to land on planets which causes you to enter an exploration mode which is similiar to that of the Wing Commander games. This is more of an open ended, mission based game. You could fight in space battles and steal cargo, but you really needed to go to a planet and enter the exploration mode of the fame. It was kind've similar to the style of other space sim games like X-Wing and Tie Fighter, but those modes were practically just objectified menu screens and not interactive in an adventure sense. Privateer can actually have the courage to say that landing on a planet and doing things like selling cargo and conversing with people to get missions was totally different from that. A seperate speech pack was also released to give full voices to characters and in 1994, a deluxe cd version included them both.

ShootEm Up 2D/3D

18th Airborne T-Time / Spectrum Information [top]

This is a fun and hugely underrated (and unknown) action/strategy game from Taiwanese developer. Although it looks like a typical top-down two-player frag fest, it's very different from your ordinary shooter. Gameplay in a nutshell: fly your plane around to first get fuel from your home base, then bomb and take over your opponent's bases. The objective is to get as many bases as you can, and make your way down to your opponent to kill him. You can call up a map of the level at any time to see which bases are left and where your opponent is. There are 7 levels in all, each with its own terrain and layout. It takes time to figure out what to do and how to control the plane, but once you do, the game becomes a lot of fun. Anyone who likes Return Fire or any other split-screen multiplayer games will definitely enjoy this old game.

Astro-Letters Mike Medved [top]

The classic "Asteroids" game is one of the first and best known games in the history of video games and arcades. As such, it has received a variety of clones and imitations on a variety of platforms. This time, it is a computer game similar to "Asteroids" with a light educational bent - learning words and phrases in Hebrew. In the original Asteroids game, you control a spaceship that is floating somewhere in the depths of outer space, and has to protect itself from countless stray asteroids, big and small, that are floating next to it in space. The spacecraft is able to shoot asteroids, thus splitting them into smaller asteroids, until at a certain point they are small enough to be destroyed with a single shot. Thus, you have to survive as long as possible, and blow up as many asteroids as possible. Our game, Astro-Letters, is not very different conceptually. However, nevertheless there is one fundamental difference that jumps out immediately: this time, the striking difference between the various asteroids is not their size or speed of movement, but rather the Hebrew letter they carry. Which brings us to the goal of the game, beyond dodging asteroids and exploding them: at the bottom of the screen some phrase in Hebrew is displayed, and the player must explode the asteroids bearing the letters that make up this phrase. When he manages to locate the appropriate asteroids and destroy them, he can move straight to the next word. The game itself was distributed with only one word in the list of phrases to be found: Mike, named after the creator of the game, Mike Medved. And if this name sounds familiar to you, it's because "Astro-Letters" is not Mike Medved's only game, and certainly not the most famous of them. The aforementioned Mike is none other than the creator of the mythical game " Intifada " which was very popular in our regions in the late eighties. However, the game contains instructions that explain how to add additional phrases and even an animation that will be shown once any phrase is perfect. So if exploding asteroids is not an educational enough activity for you, maybe exploding asteroids while learning Hebrew letters is the direction you should turn to...

Guide a team of up to six soldiers through 72 levels of combat in this top-down action/strategy hybrid, best thought of as Lemmings crossed with Commando crossed with Dune 2. The characters are controlled indirectly using the mouse, as you activate each soldier or group of them by highlighting them, click the left button to move them to a particular spot, and the right button for them to fire guns at an enemy. You can also pick up grenades or rockets, which can be used to destroy groups of enemies, buildings or some vehicles (by pressing both buttons at once). Each mission has a specific objective, and some feature vehicles such as tanks that used make things easier. Your troops can cross water but can't shoot within it, so finding and controlling bridges is often crucial. You can use the arrangement of trees to find hiding places to shoot from, and should watch out for CPU soldiers also doing so.

Day 3, The: Dragon Force Mirinae Software Inc. / Soft Town [top]

The Earth was plagued by a global war that lasted twenty years. The invention of the Arcadia Bomb led to an uneasy peace. Shortly afterwards, a warrior race known as Lelia expressed their interest in the bomb and attacked the weakened humanity. Only the most skillful pilot can protect the planet and defeat the enemy. This is a Korean-made side-scrolling shoot-em-up (the first game never got released due to quality concerns, and The Day 2 only came out on MSX). The player can select to control any of the three characters: Jeong Kihyeop in his balanced fighter craft Taemiru; Jennifer Lee and the well-protected, but slow Black Cat; and Siegfried Reutz in his powerful, but fragile Gladiator. The player also chooses the shape of the future "options" (firepower-enhancing circles) for the craft - surrounding or attached to the tail. Each ship can collect up to four weapons, and the player can switch between them at will. Letter-shaped upgrades appear in the stages or are dropped by enemies. The game uses pseudo-3D scrolling, allowing enemies to appear from fore- and background.

To be more specific, you are their worst fighter who screwed up the last 18 missions. As a consequence your leader is pretty pissed off of you and wants you dead. Your task is it to head to Earth, the only race who could defend itself successfully against the Yanchooz so far, and open a road for your capital ships. The problem is that you are completely alone. Nobody believes in you and now it's up to you to accomplish this suicidal mission. This is a shareware space arcade shooter with 10 missions. In each of the 10 missions you have to defeat five waves of human ships that differ from each other in their type and their amount. To clean each system a capital ship needs to be destroyed. After that you return to your home destroyer but your ship won't be repaired (remember, they want you dead) and you carry your defects into the next system. But your space fighter is equipped with HIJKE shield converters. From time to time a HIJKE capsule prowls through the system and when you catch it your shield regenerates. Unfortunately you only have 30 shield converters i.e. you should ration these capsules.

Fast Action Paq / Mindscape Game Pak The Dreamers Guild / Mallard Software Inc. [top]

This collection is a set of four "retro games" based on fondly remembered titles from the 1980's. BOT - Your mission is to prevent the Mother CPU from completing its military conquest of the planet. To succeed you'll need to pass through 5 levels of BOT soldiers shooting them at will, including a larger BOT boss at the end of every level. Try to pick up extra grenades, armor protection, and more powerful weaponry along the way to assist you in accomplishing this task. Finding the experimental lightning gun is especially helpful, since it inflicts twice as much damage on enemies as your normal gun. BUBBLE TROUBLE - You control a spaceship which you must use to clear the starlanes of subspace vortices (which look like terrestrial water bubbles). You must avoid contact with these vortices and shots by your own weapons, or your energy will slowly drain away. Your ship is armed with two weapons: guns, which are weak but use up little energy; and penetrators, which are strong but use up much more energy. Ship energy is used for thrusting, subspace jumping, and conducting repairs. Shields are used for defense only, and you lose shield power when you come in contact with vortices, bullets, penetrators, saucers, or stationary energy barbs. FLAK ATTACK - A horde of robot commandos are attacking your base from the skies above. You control a single gun which you must aim and fire to stop the invaders, but don't run out of ammunition, or your base will certainly be destroyed. When a robot parachutes to the ground, it will walk towards your base and stand beside it. When 4 robots gather on one side of the base, they will destroy it, and the game will be over. The enemy ships include satellites, jets, and helicopters. Satellites fly past at high speeds, but they cannot harm your base directly. Jets fly overhead quickly, and the pilot will eject if you fire enough shots at it. Helicopters drop parachuting robots as they pass. Friendly UN Helicopters will drop extra ammo on your base if you let them fly peacefully overhead. MOLE'S QUEST - As Monty the Mole, you must rescue your belongings which the miners have scattered throughout the mines after they destroyed your beautiful home. Jump from platform to platform from the left to the right, grab the belonging, and jump back to the left to safely pass each level. Each time you save ten belongings, you will see an animation of Monty taking the rescued belongings to his new home. Since the mines are covered with radioactive ooze, you must limit your exposure to no more than 5 minutes at a time. That should be sufficient time to rescue each of your belongings. Every time you save a belonging, you will be given a password, so you can continue from the level where you stopped, even if you shut off your computer.

Fox Ranger II: Second Mission Soft Action / LG Electronics Inc. [top]

An alien organism has infiltrated Earth's atmosphere and sunk deep into the ocean. Eventually, it grew and spread over the planet. A large-scale war between humans and aliens began. A lone Fox Ranger pilot is sent on his fighter spacecraft to an alien-controlled zone in attempt to single-handedly win the war. Unlike its predecessor, this incorporates three different shoot-em-up styles: the original horizontal one, vertical, and chase-view 3D. Stages may belong to any of these different styles and switch to another one following a boss fight. Weapon and power-up system, however, remain the same regardless of the perspective, with regular upgrades and up to three special weapons that can be stored and switched between.

He must now continue his mission on foot, proceeding deeper into the complex in order to destroy it from the inside. Galactic Warrior Rats Mikev Design / Summit Software [top]

Einstein, Newton and Darwin are the Galactic Warrior Rats, mutant hybrids who come under your control in this top-down multi-directional shooter. Their plan is to save the badly polluted planet Smeaton Five by destroying its robotic defences and the computer primed to explode it. Many enemies must be shot down along the way, but most release credits when shot – wait a few seconds for these to appear. You have three lives, with each rat representing a life, which means that all upgrades are lost when you lose a life, and each rat’s protective biosphere has the ability to withstand a few shots. Before heading into the action, you can spend your initial 500 credits on upgrades and weaponry. Your movement features a degree of inertia, making it harder to stop short of a position.

This is a "cute-em-up": a vertically scrolling shoot-em-up with nonsensical enemies and colorful, stylistically diverse levels. The game can be played in single-player or cooperative two-player mode. The gameplay system is fairly simple: players control cute-looking airplanes with two basic attacks: a three-way shot, and a more powerful spreading wave. Flying and ground-based stationary enemies must be eliminated or avoided. Some stages consist entirely of a boss fight. Each player-controlled craft has a health bar; once it reaches zero players may opt to continue from the same spot. The game is over when players run out of continues.

Gravitar BTS / Trans T.N.D. [top]

Gravitar is a pc version of a 1982 arcade game originally released by Atari. It uses the same minimal wireframe graphics which is similar in style to the early Asteroids games. The player starts in space with their little space ship, in the center of the screen is a planet from which pairs of enemy ships are randomly launched. In the corners of the screen are icons representing gateways to four worlds. When the player flies through a portal the game screen changes and the player must manage their descent as they approach the planet surface, a bit like Lander, the object however is not to land but to destroy the planet's reactor and then get out before the planet explodes. Shields are available, each planet has defensive gun turrets, but these use up a lot of fuel but the player can refuel by hovering over planetary fuel dumps.

Graviton II Zephyr Software [top]

Like the first Graviton game, this is a physics-based shooter modeled after Gravitar, featuring a triangular spaceship with turn and thrust controls, whose flight is governed by inertia, gravity and acceleration. This time around there are 16 new planets, split up as before into four solar systems. In space, the player contends with the sun's gravity, plus the occasional hostile flying saucer. Planets may be tackled in any order, but starting with the tougher ones awards more points. While planetside, gravity becomes a downward pull - the chief hazards (besides running out of gas) are enemy turrets, drifting mines (that deflect most incoming fire), and the terrain itself; a force shield can be employed for defense, and energy can be replenished at fuel dumps on the surface. To conquer a planet, all turrets must be destroyed. The level is finished when all four solar systems are successfully reduced to ashes; subsequent levels up the ante with reversed gravity, invisible terrain, and eventually both at the same time! The registered version lets you choose your starting point, and adjust various game variables to tweak the difficulty level.

Guns 30 EDI'S Soft [top]

A Spanish virtual shooting gallery that takes place around 1930 in some large American city (most likely in Chicago), and our hero is a "tough" policeman (possibly "undercover") fighting gangsters (who will be our opponents). There is only one level in the game, and, in fact, there is not a single hint that there is a more complete version of it: no offers to buy the full version, for example, will follow either during download or in case of victory. The perspective of the view, of course, is from the first person. The action takes place on a single location, which is a street of a night city and consists of three conventional and "communicating" screens, and equipped with "scrolling", so that moving from one to another is carried out, albeit quite quickly, but by no means instantaneously. On the right side of the space, a vertical bar is displayed, initially completely filled with red - this is the protagonist's health reserve, decreasing from each hit by the villain. At the bottom there is a kind of "scale" of cartridges, which is reduced when we make shots, and to the right of it there are several icons denoting "shops" (and not "life" or body armor, as you might think - neither one nor the other is not here). There are formally five gangsters; each of them appears at a strictly fixed point. On the left screen, there is only one enemy - in one (exactly specific) window of a high-rise building (note that for some reason you can also raise your gaze just above and to the left of the corresponding area - but there are never any enemies there); on the central one there are two - one on the roof, the other on the fire escape; finally, on the right there is also a couple - one on the roof of an extension with a sign "Il Capo", which looks like a garage or a car wash, and the second on the street next to the entrance to it. All bandits die from one hit, but they tend to be reborn (each of the types - in the same strictly specified place) literally out of thin air, and sometimes they do it two, three, four, or even (albeit rarely) five times in a row. Moreover, with any new start, the order of their appearance will always be new, since it is determined by the program at random. To win, you need to shoot fifteen adversaries - the corresponding "counter", decreasing as we succeed, is displayed in the center at the bottom of the screen. At the same time, we will not have any opportunity to heal, "strengthen" and so on.

Interceptor, The Doka [top]

The aliens are here, and they're hellbent on razing city after city to the ground, by indiscriminately dropping bombs from orbit on everything that stands. The only defense against the extraterrestrials' obvious dislike of Earthling architecture is the Interceptor: a flying vessel armed with rockets, which launch upwards to take down the trigger-happy UFOs; and side guns, which fire shells to dispatch the descending bombs. The Interceptor proceeds from city to city to repel the waves of alien attacks. It takes damage from direct hits, and has a finite supply of ammo, but can be repaired and resupplied by setting down on a landing pad. To clear a level, all enemy ships must be taken down; besides conventional bombs, the aliens pack two more dangerous types: nukes (red) which can instantly level a city, and fusion bombs (blue) that destroy anything in the air if they detonate - including the Interceptor. Points are awarded for destroying alien ships, but every fired shot and every object destroyed by the aliens will detract from the final score. The more buildings (and trees) left standing, the better.

Jigu Guchul Jakjeon / Dino [K] Incom [top]

Rare exclusive South Korean shooter in perspective "side view" and with a small platform element. The plot is nowhere to be explained, but the point is that a boy with a machine gun - our protagonist - exterminates hordes of upright dinosaurs of different species growing about from him (perhaps, in fact, these are some dinosaur-like aliens from outer space). The game is divided into episodes, each of which in turn consists of several levels, always limited to a single screen. Moreover: these stages (within the "stage") are almost identical to each other, and any subsequent one is essentially the previous one with the addition of some new "constructive elements" (for example, the abyss - and not at all fatal: having landed there, the hero immediately arises safe and sound in the upper part of space). On the screen, where there are several platforms at different heights, a boy appears and a certain number of those or other above-mentioned enemies appear: first they are only “Velociraptors”, then biped “Triceratops” are added to them; they are not capable of remote attacks and move randomly, not trying to purposefully attack the hero). To go to the next stage, you need to kill all the opponents in the current one. The quantity of ammunition in the machine is infinite; various objects constantly fall out of defeated enemies, but they seem to be needed exclusively to increase the score. There is no time limit (although there is a bonus in the form of the word "Time"). Our alter ego has a health reserve of four units (the number denoting it is displayed in the upper left corner next to the word " Player ") and shrinking by" division "at every contact with opponents; apparently, it is impossible to make up for it. There are several" Lives ", but their number, alas, is not shown anywhere; in case of death, the character instantly reborn at the same level and with a full supply of health, and his achievements in the form of destroyed enemies are preserved. Each episode ends with a battle with the boss - surprisingly, there is nothing complicated in them (the first - a huge triceratops - in general it’s enough not to let yourself in, “pouring” bursts from the machine gun ; true health reserve "g lavars "is not shown anywhere.) Subsequently, the process becomes somewhat more complicated, in particular, new opponents appear in the second" stage ", including tyrannosaurs with boxing gloves.

To be more precise, your goal is to defend the Eichhof Brewery from the imperium of invading "big beers," with bottle caps and other imaginative weapons that only beer lovers can appreciate ;) Enemies, of course, are various types of beer: small, large, kegs, you name it. There are only four levels, but all of them are a lot of fun. From rival beers in the first few levels, you will get to fight other booze (coktail, whiskey, etc.), and in the final level you are faced with things that are associated with hangovers on Sunday morning, including apple cores (ugh), pretzels, coffee cups, the toilet [heh]. You earn money for each kill, At the end of each level. you go to a bar where you have the option to purchase power-ups for your sh... I mean, beer bottle. Major Stryker Apogee Software, Ltd. [top]

This 2D vertical scrolling shooter game that was originally distributed as shareware. It consists of three episodes, with only the first episode distributed as shareware, and the rest available commercially. The episodes are: Lava Planet, Arctic Planet, Desert Planet. The game features PC Speaker and Sound Blaster sounds, and the AdLib music is similar in style to Bobby Prince's other songs. The game uses EGA graphics and draws three backgrounds ("triple-parallax scrolling"). It was re-released as freeware on March 14, 2006. The only named characters are the titular hero and Fleet Admiral Yoshira, a very attractive, often flirtatious woman who briefs the character between levels, and seems to be in love with him as well. There are three difficulty levels, each of which has drastically different levels of powerups, enemies, and enemy fire. Powerups available include laser powerups (boxes marked "00," "01," etc.,) which affect the pattern and number of shots fired, speedups, holding patterns which stop the screen and release a fleet of enemies, Zap Bombs which cause screenwide explosions and extra lives. Hostages can also be rescued by ramming into the capsules they are contained in. A player with upgraded firepower is lowered to single shots upon being hit. A player with basic firepower instantly loses a life. Being crushed by a wall also loses a life regardless of firepower. Three different types of shields exist: Two side shields that protect the jet left and right until it is damaged, two temporary small wave shields that rotate around the jet and a temporary invincibility orb shield. At the end of each level, the player is awarded additional points on the percentage of enemies destroyed and the percentage of hostages rescued. In 2006, the game was made freeware.

There is a wide array of weapons and power-ups available, including various guns, lasers, energy blasts, missiles, and satellite drones that aid shooting and can be rotated manually around the plane as player wants them to. Enemies try to both crash into player's spaceship or shoot various missiles to deal the damage. Successful kill of a wave of enemies typically yields a power-up. There are usually several huge boss enemies in each stage. The game shares the same engine with the developer's previous vertical shooter Dawn Raider.

The goal is to shoot as many of them as possible to get a high enough score to advance to the next level. During the rides there's also parts of conversations you can hear where people argue about you or blame you for problems. This is basically a shooting gallery with a B-movies/TV horror theme - complete with a demonic host called Dr. Dearth, zombies, and other spooky things that glow in the dark. Like a typical shooting gallery game, your goal is to move a gun across the screen, shooting skulls, bugs, ghosts, and other creeps that pop up at random intervals. You'll have a limited amount of time and ammunition to do this. Every time you hit a target, you score points. Shooting a target usually results in an animation and sound effect. In some stages, gravestones move across the bottom of the screen to block your shots. Each stage requires a certain number of points to complete and stages will get harder as you advance through the game.

PowerShooter Jay Kramer [top]

This is a good amateur shmup similar to the game "Flying Tigers". There is no plot, nor are there any indications of the time and place of action - but the form of the aircraft, and the drawings on them, and the backgrounds suggest that the game is dedicated to the Pacific War Theater. We play a fighter and fly over the sea, islands with volcanoes and various fortifications. Several types of aircraft, as well as a number of ground opponents interfere with us: ships, turrets, anti-aircraft guns, various fortifications, as well as volcanoes. The latter, of course, are not opponents in the literal sense of the word - but they all erupt, throwing a large amount of lava in the form of balls that take away health. The main danger is collisions with enemy aircraft: some of them even specifically go to ram. Our plane has a health reserve that can be replenished with bonuses. In addition to first-aid kits, among them there is a bonus that allows you to shoot a huge number of shells at the same time (standardly we shoot five at once), creating a protective dome around us, as well as giving an ultra-powerful weapon that looks like some kind of sound waves. As a last resort, in addition to the endless conventional ammunition, we have a limited number of missiles, which, however, can be replenished - sometimes allied ships are found, and they can be made for short-term landing. At the end of the game, by the way, rather short, we will have a traditional meeting with the boss. There is no sound, but it looks wonderful, primarily thanks to the bright and picturesque backgrounds.

If you have ever played that Whack a mole game at an amusement park then you should enjoy WinDog. Prairie Dogs pop out of ten holes in the terrain for a few seconds, and you can shoot them with one of three kinds of guns: the Pellet Gun, .44 Magnum, and Shotgun. Prairie Dogs die with two hits from the Pellet Gun or one hit from the .44 Magnum, and the Shotgun kills every prairie dog on the screen. Consequently, Pellet Gun kills are worth 10 points, .44 Magnum kills are worth 5 points, and the Shotgun is worth 1 point per dog killed; misses costs you one point. Some of the prairie dogs are rabid and will bite you if you don't shoot them. The game ends when you get 5 rabies bites, kill all of the prairie dogs, or run out of ammunition. There are three prairie dog settings (20, 50, or 100 dogs) and three ammo settings to adjust the difficulty level.

This is a top-down, space-themed action game where you are Jake Stone, a mercenary for hire. Go around the galaxy, make money, destroy ships, smuggle cargo, upgrade your ship and uncover a sinister plot. The story is told through simple conversations and brief cutscenes. In some ways, the series is reminiscent of Star Control II, without the ship customization and fleet building aspects. The keyboard or a joystick is used to navigate the ship, which is always in middle of screen, and fire weapons (which consist of lasers and missiles). Mice are also supported. Many functions, such as scans, communication, and power distribution, are controlled by the control panel. The player can zoom out to see details, the amount of which depends on how much power is allocated to sensors. Power is consumed by the hyperdrive, whose maximum speed is determined by engine power allocation. Hull integrity is shown through a square superimposed on top of the ship. Over time, the ship will repair itself, the speed of which depending on how much power has been dedicated to the life support systems. The waveforms of shields and weapons can be adjusted. Their waveforms affect their effectiveness against each other. Lasers can be set to fire between one and three cannons. Communication is implemented in the form of the other party talking and the player selecting a response. Items in the player's cargo hold can be transported to planets and other ships. In the first episode, many missions involve delivering cargo in return for useful items. The Escape is the free episode available as the shareware demo. Galaxy is the second episode available with purchasing the registered version.

T2: The Arcade Game Midway / Virgin Games, Inc. [top]

This game was originally a popular arcade game and is loosely based on the film Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Your goal is to save the leader of the Human Resistance, John Connor, and his mother, Sarah, from the T-1000, a mimetic poly-alloy Terminator, bent on killing them both. The first mission is actually a backstory on what happened before the T-800 and the T-1000 entered Skynet. It also showed some of Skynet's machines that didn't appear in the film (for example, the Silverfish). One or two players can play at the same time controlling a T-800 model, you gun down the terminators of the opposing side in a light gun style fashion utilizing a first-person perspective. What was noteworthy about T2 was the use of digitized actors from footage specially shot during the making of the film. This made for realistic 2D sprites in a Light gun game for the time. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Robert Patrick, and Eddie Furlong all reprised their respective roles for the making of the arcade game. Linda Hamilton does not play Sarah Connor in any footage of the game; she is instead played by Debbie Evans.

WinRoids Stephen Baxter [top]

This is a shareware Asteroids clone where you have to destroy every asteroid on the level while avoiding being hit by the debris (asteroids get split into smaller parts when hit) and the occasional flying saucers. The game uses newtonian physics which means that you use your thrusters to accelerate in a direction, and the ship keeps moving in that direction and velocity - regardless of the current direction your ship is pointing - until you use your thrusters again to decelerate or change your direction. The levels are on a single screen with looped borders. Anything that exits the screen on one side, will enter the screen on the other. This includes your own shots. Apart from the random enemy UFOs, there are also randomly appearing bonus crates containing extra lives, weapon upgrades and shield generators. The graphics are high resolution (for the time) pre-rendered 2D sprites in cartoon or 50's sci-fi style.

World Quest Egerter Software / WordUp Software Productions [top]

This is a shareware horizontal scrolling shoot 'em up. The objective of the game is to destroy defence bases set up by an unspecified alien race throughout the levels, and rescue captive humans. While most of the opposition the player faces comes in the form of stationary defences that fire various projectiles, rather than incoming enemy craft, there are also end-level bosses. The player's craft can freely move forward, up and down, and also backwards: although the screen scrolls forward automatically, it allows to backtrack to a certain extent. The craft is outfitted with missiles and bombs, and random powerups that can be acquired from destroyed alien installations may provide the ability to fire additional missiles backwards, upwards or at a 45 degree angle above or below the player's ship. The initial release of World Quest included 10 worlds (levels), with only the first four available in the unregistered shareware version. The total number of worlds was increased to 15 in v2.0. Additionally, the registered game offers the option to access every level and activate the unlimited lives cheat by using the secret password.

Space shooter of shareware origin, similar to the gameplay of Star Castle arcade machines. An enemy ship landed in the center of the screen - and not just sat down, but barricaded itself behind several force fields. It is necessary to destroy it, having previously broken through the defense. The game uses an extremely unusual model of movement and control, which not everyone will like: the ship is constantly moving, flying off the edge of the screen and appearing in the opposite direction. The player can maneuver it by changing this trajectory. The enemy has the ability to repair his shield, so the player is required to be accurate, which is difficult to talk about given the behavior of the ship. In general, it will have a hard time - and not the least role in the fact that the game is very difficult was played by the controls, to which you will have to get used to: it is possible that you will succeed, and it is possible that you will not be able to master the game at all.

Zone 66 Renaissance / Epic MegaGames, Inc. [top]

A pilot is warned by a mysterious stranger that something terrible is about to happen in his town. Rushing home, the pilot discovers that his wife and baby daughter were murdered. The stranger who tried to warn the pilot is gravely wounded; however, before dying, he passes some information to him. The hero is back on his plane, determined to avenge the deaths of his beloved ones, alone against terrorist forces whose true goals are yet unknown. It's a top-down shooter in which the player controls an aircraft, eliminating other planes as well as ground-based hostile units (tanks, etc.). The player-controlled aircraft is able to move in any direction, avoiding enemy fire or preparing a better angle for the next shot. It was one of the first games whose production team consisted almost entirely from demosceners. A GUS Enhancement Pack was available, which provided greatly enhanced music for Gravis Ultrasound cards. The game has a total of 8 missions. The first one was contained in the shareware version, while different companies packaged the other ones as two or four mission packs. Or altogether! The mission titles are: Mission 1: Foreign Shores, Mission 2: Ice Wind, Mission 3: Desert Heat, Mission 4: War Plains, Mission 5: Highway Fury, Mission 6: Plantation Crash, Mission 7: Hell, Mission 8: Final Frontier.
