Xadlak Plus Sprite 1997

Die! Die! Die! Death surrounds you in this crazy-hard scrolling shooter. Really nice horizontal 2d shmup with great music and nicely drawn graphics. It features excellent illusion of depth, parallax scrolling, and plenty of varied stages, cool enemies and backdrops. However, this game is super difficult. One hit and you are dead and each time you die you are reset back to an earlier checkpoint, and there and not many checkpoints! It feels like a lost pc engine game (sort of like Rayxanber), supports gamepads, and supports full-screen with smooth scrolling. Choose from overboost and 3x types of armor to blaze through stages. Choose stages as well as a forgiving easier difficulty (YUTORI mode). You have three different powerups for your ship, all providing different types of screen coverage and firepower. These powerups have an energy bar that, once it runs out, will make the weapon fire erratically until you can destroy more targets in succession to recharge it. On top of that, you have a boost option to move faster in any direction, which is very risky once you factor that there are loads of hazards and obstacles in the stages. It can still be useful to dodge some otherwise impossible to escape barrages. Enemy ships are well-designed, and the "boss" ships are particularly memorable. Power-ups are very neat, especially the ship add-on you can use in the last level. Definitely worth it for fans of the style.
