Space Combat Austin Meyer / Laminar Research 2003

This is a "realistic" (according to the laws of physics) space combat simulator, fairly simple development (no plot or missions), created by the main developer of the famous Xplane saga of flight simulators. You enter the spaceship mass, size, and thruster and engine powers and locations and see how the resulting ship handles. Ships do not behave like aircraft: they behave like spaceships in a frictionless vacuum. This means that any velocity picked up will be maintained unless an opposite force is applied by the engines. The spaceships have things such as biodomes and customizable engines. The ships have weapons (lasers and torpedoes), as the name suggests. Take the ship though gates projected on a HUD, or asteroids or comets to test your maneuverability and flying skills. The 3D graphics are fully based on the cross-platform OpenGL libraries. Originally shareware, version 1.40 was later made freeware.
