Earth & Beyond Westwood Studios, Inc. / Electronic Arts, Inc. 2002

This was the first Massively Multiplayer Online playing galaxy. This galaxy was filled with monsters and strange new worlds, but it was also home to thousands of other players from around the world. Players created unique characters and starships and could affect the galaxy, but the game persisted even after individual players log off. Alien encounters, fierce combat, cutthroat commerce, new discoveries, perilous quests, strategic alliances, diplomatic backstabbing, and epic wars awaited you and the friends you adventured with. It let you build your character and career in three distinct ways: exploration, trade, and combat. The game was designed around these three activities, and each race, profession, skill, starship, and item affected how well you did these core activities. Explorers had access to hidden locales, the best sensors, the most accurate maps, the fastest ships, and stealth capabilities. Tradesmen made and sold goods, ran trade routes, went on trade missions, had the biggest cargo holds, and did whatever it took to make a profit. Warriors thrived on combat, destroying enemies, going on dangerous missions, and protecting their friends during perilous missions. It had regular monthly story driven updates designed to gradually change the game environment as the plot unfolded. In June of the release year, players met a new race - the Vrix. This was a substantial update to the online universe, adding many more missions for higher level players and improving the intelligence of all NPCs in the game. It was the last game made by Westwood Studios, the original developer of the Command & Conquer series. EA shut down the game on September 22, 2004. On November 10, 2012 a major emulator project launched their version of the live game. Over six years of project time were dedicated to this release. The game is stable, complete, and contains several new features including the three missing classes. Run non-profit and by donations only, this game is free to play for everyone at all times.
