FPS Year Summary - 1996

Duke Nukem 3D was the first commercial implementation of a new engine known as BUILD, developed by Ken Silverman. Even though it still had enemies rendered in sprites, the engine had solid technical and gameplay advantages over the games that had come before. Set in a near-future science fiction world, Duke Nukem 3D places the player into the boots of world-renowned hero and tough guy Duke Nukem. Duke is essentially a caricature of the stereotypical macho action hero, spouting one-liners throughout the game. The Build editor had a real-time What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) interface, meaning that level designers could lay out a level in two dimensions, then immediately switch into a 3D mode to see what the level would look like. The game had the ability to give the illusion of dynamically altering portions of the level, allowing effects such as buildings exploding and collapsing, ground cracking in earthquakes, and certain walls that players could destroy with rocket launchers or explosive barrels. It also added in the ability to destroy or interact with a large number of in-game objects. Fire hydrants could be smashed, urinals interacted with, coke cans exploded, and it featured smashable mirrors that reflected the architecture around them, as well as Duke. Humour is something that sets the game apart from most other FPS games. Seven months later came Quake which brought true three dimensional polygons into the development realm and explored the online play space above and beyond any other game available. It also started the graphic card add-on for the PC hardware market as well. The game featured dynamic lighting, and realistic water, and a variety of enemies that ranged from towering lightning-shooting behemoths to twisted knights to zombies that would throw hunks of their own bloody entrails at the player. Multiplayer proved to be Quake's strong suit, with the game featuring support for the TCP/IP networking protocol, allowing multiplayer games to now take place over the burgeoning internet. A later update to the game would add in a system known as QuakeWorld, which added client-side prediction to the game, greatly improving network performance on slow dial-up connections. Commercial level editors were available for games like Descent and Quake but game companies soon realised that providing fans with built-in editors or releasing free Software Development Kits (SDKs) made their games longer-lasting and more profitable so this trend ended quickly. Chex Quest was a popular and colorful free FPS advertisement for a breakfast cereal still remembered fondly by its fans and used the Doom engine. Few promotional FPS games have been made and mostly they are for movies. Some promotional mods or levels for existing games have also been made (check the Mod/TCs page). It's a quick way to expose a product to teenagers.

Realms Of The Haunting is an atmospheric horror FPS that utilises full-motion video (FMV) sequences filmed with professional actors to advance the very creepy story. As cd-rom drives began to be more common, games took advantage of the huge space on them compared to floppy disks and big movie files were now possible. What made this game memorable is that between the FMVs, you are actually moving and fighting in a 3d environment. Most other FMV games like the Cyberia series were rail shooters where you were set on a pre-planned course and shot at enemies as they came along. House Of The Dead was a popular arcade FPS that was this type of rail shooter. This trend didn't last for many years as it offers limited gameplay than a fully explorable 3D environment. However it was the first popular emergence of the zombie shooter which would grow in popularity in the future. Tomb Raider brought about the TPS (third-person shooter) where you saw the character you controlled from behind. It helped that your heroine was sexy and Lara Croft became one of the best known videogame characters ever in its numerous sequels. It brought a fully explorable 3D environment with gameplay elements drawn from 2D platform games. You could see how your character moved to jump, climb, swim, manipulate objects.

Alien Trilogy Probe Entertainment / Acclaim [top]

You play as Ellen Ripley in this movie-inspired game. The levels are quite dark, just like the movies. The aliens come in different well known forms like facehuggers, chestbursters and full grown aliens in various sizes and colours. But you'll also combat cyborgs, colonists and marines. Multiplayer is kind of a letdown: just deathmatch (without Ripley or alien characters) and no co-op support although this game seems to be made for it. Sounds and weapons will be familiar to those who have seen the movies. Although announced, there was never any 3d acceleration and the animations are pretty shabby. If you move, you go slightly sideways. But when you run this just becomes comical, like you have some bad spasms. Also absent is a useful save function. Fans of the movies will be very disappointed. Another game with a nice idea but bad implementation.

Big application developer Corel tried their hand at games and came up with this mediocre one. The graphics engine is actually a 2.5D engine using animated sprites. You battle through 8 different large outdoor environments with rolling terrain and the chance to operate several types of vehicles, including turrets, tanks, etc. The enemy AI though is not so good and music is somewhat inappropriate at times.

After you are dishonorably discharged out of the army (for not being willing to kill innocent people) you are sent to take out a fiendish scientist. The game starts right after you've done this and you try to escape the scene of your crime. A lot of well done cutscenes make the game intruiging but dumb enemies and annoying, illogical puzzles break this game down.

Chex Quest Digital Cafe / Ralston Purina [top]

Chex Quest is a total conversion of the computer game Doom (specifically Ultimate Doom). This game, notable for being the first video game ever to be included in cereal boxes as a prize, was found in 5.7 million boxes of Chex cereal. In the game, the hero is the Chex Warrior, whose job was to fly to the planet Bazoik to save the citizens taken captive by Flemoids and use his zorcher to send those evil, flem-slinging creatures back into their own dimension. They we were giving away a custom-designed interactive game that was a $35 retail value, making it the highest-value toy ever offered in a box of cereal.
They were able to do this partly because AOL covered the cost of stamping out all of those CD-ROMs in return for including a free trial subscription on the disc.
ChexQuest was a huge success. What was intended to be a three-month promotion flew off retailer shelves in the first six weeks. The brand secured a 295 percent increase in incremental sales, a 48 percent increase in share points and 42 million free offline PR impressions.

The sequel, Chex Quest 2, starts with the Chex Warrior returning to his home planet and landing in Chex City. As he lands he notes with a little apprehension that everything is quiet... Too quiet. As he leaves his ship, it becomes apparent that the Flemoid threat has reached his homeworld. Grabbing his trusty zorcher again, he races to the rescue of his beloved home.
He battles through a spaceport, a cinema, a museum, and through the city until he reaches the sewers, where he faces The Maximus. This game was downloadable from the Chex Quest website.

Chill Manor, the little known sequel to I.M. Meen (also for DOS), centers around an old woman named Ophelia Chill, who is, surprisingly, the wife of I.M. Meen, whose real name is finally revealed as "Ignatius Mortimer Meen". She has taken "The Book of Ages" and, as she states in her intro song, has "torn out all the pages" and is "making little changes on each one". In other words, she is going to literately rewrite history and make her and Ignatius the leaders of the most powerful empire in the world. You must stop her. Playing as one of four special agent kids, you must roam through the halls of Ophelia's Manor and find 5 pages of the Book of Ages. After you find them, you shall have to read info from your voucher and fix the pages by replacing the italicised words and replace them with the correct one from your voucher. But watch out. Many enemies and creatures shall try and catch you (deplete your health to 0). If this happens, you won't die; you'll never be born. Killer Rats, Persian Sorcerers, Beefeater Werewolves and Undead Pharohs await your courage and agility. Show your smarts and you'll be empowered with wicked weapon s, mysterious strengths, Diamonds of Valor and Rubies of Courage. Check out the Plasma Gauntlet that sprays gooey plasma balls. Or the Spirit Cannon, that fires blasts out of a bat-shaped head. If you need time to recover, put on the Spirit Cloak and go invisible -- but only for 10 seconds. It has challenging educational content - teacher-tested and approved, 20 action-packed levels with varied historical themes and creepy creatures to battle, and fast-paced, smooth scrolling, 3-D action.

Colosso Adventures, The Campana Productions [top]

The Colosso Adventures are FPS made with GCS and were released as three episodes. The first one was released in April 1996 and is called Escape from Dr. Colosso. The story begins with our beautiful Red Princess being kidnapped by a mad scientist named Dr. Colosso. You must rescue her and save the world from this killer. The doctor is a hideous man who has made hundreds of men and monsters work for him and fight you with all they have. It's your life against theirs to reach our princess and destroy the mad doctor. You have friends along the way to help you and weapons to use for a good fight. If you can fight your way out from Colosso's dungeon, and follow the mad doctor through the portholes of time, you can win your princess back and make the world right.
The second episode is called Colosso Revenge, and was released in December of 1996. After the princess has been saved you learned that the mad doctor has left his monster machine on overload. You must now race to stop the machine before the world is destroyed. You had better hurry. As long as the machine is running you can still save us all, but more men and monsters are being made to fight you.
The Colosso Secret is the third and final episode of the series. The world is safe now from Dr. Colosso, but you still have all these mindless men and monsters stalking you everywhere you turn. Your only hope to end this madness is to find the Colosso Secret! Return these creatures to the other side of the time gates, and close them for good. Due to improved memory management the registered version has more graphics, more animations, and more monsters than any other episode in the series.
Later those three episodes were released together in one CD called The Colosso Value Pack.

It also has intro screens at each locale and movie cutscenes (full version only) that set the stage during the adventure. Beautiful outdoor scenes, and detailed indoor sets help bring the adventure to life.

Corridor 8: Galactic Wars (cancelled) Capstone / Intracorp [top]
Corridor 8: Galactic Wars was to be the sequel to Corridor 7, but never made it past a prototype stage. There aren't any screenshots here because there's nothing really to take a screenshot of, especially since many Doom graphics are used as scratch art. The game was somewhat ambitious according to its design document, with six episodes of ten maps each, divided into two campaigns of three episodes: an 'allied' and an 'axis'.

CyberDillo Pixel Technologies / Panasonic [top]

Guide the Cyberdillo, a disco king, through discos while collecting platform shoes, bellbottoms, 8-track players and other 70's paraphernalia. It uses an overly complex 3D Doom-clone game engine. There's a plunger gun and flushing toilets, urine, barf, and dog butts. Not much fun though due to the pixilated graphics but the 70's disco soundtrack is the best part of the game.

Cylindrix Hotwarez LLC / Goldtree Enterprises [top]

Cylindrix is a 3-on-3 combat game with 360 degrees of freedom that is similar to Spectre VR but with a wider variety of ships, as well as the addition of drivers. Attack and be attacked from all angles as you battle in huge orbiting arenas that are each unique in physics, atmospheric conditions, and configuration. You must build your team from 37 warriors from 10 alien races and select from 8 vehicles, each with unique maneuverability, speed, and firepower. Choose your ship, your shipmates whom will have ships of their own and command your groups to win by taking over the Cylindrix. You'll also have to face the COMPUTER'S choices of it's group and it's ships! A FAST PACED GAME in REAL TIME 3D COMBAT. You must try to outwit the computer, but usually the computer will outwit you! Game is also playable by modem; head-to-head! The developer has now released the game and source code for free.

Deus Silmarils / ReadySoft [top]

The successor to Robinson's Requiem. Silmarils saw the potential of RR and released this indirect sequel. This time around you, as a bountyhunter, land on an alien planet. You'll fight the natives who are armed with spears, bows and some more advanced weaponry. Just like in Robinson's Requiem you have to keep track of your needs regarding food and water, your limited gear, temperature and need for healing. Saving can be done anytime and anywhere. The graphics offer high resolution surroundings but no hardware acceleration. Minor points are also the limited freedom of moving and a lot of clipping errors. Trees and other objects seem to pop out of the ground at random. Still, Deus is an interesting game and should be looked at by people who like a realistic world.

In this commercial 32-level pwad, your character battles his way out of the Holding Cells and fights the horrors that wait in the ordeals of the Slave Quarters, Industrial Park, Space Port, space ship, Io Base, and, finally, Planet Hell itself. After playing each level, you are treated to original artwork and text which reveals important plot information about the next level. There are levels containing real-world objects you can look at and, in most, cases interact with like cranes, hologram projectors, blood processors, trucks, a spaceship, rocket launches, even a life-sized computer. As well, it has some of the most challenging tricks and traps ever devised. This addon was also later included in D!Zone Gold.

Each of the 32 levels here makes for an extremely difficult experience in single player mode, with innovative level architecture further defining the "classic" feel of the original Doom Shareware episodes. It has been designed with deathmatch in mind. Each of the levels plays fast in deathmatch for even the most demanding players. There are several ways to reach key areas to set up ambushes or brute force attacks. This addon was also later included in D!Zone Gold.

Duke Nukem 3D 3DRealms / GT Interactive [top]

Angry aliens invade the earth!...and they like it here. You will find them in pornshops, stripclubs and filmstudios. Duke improved the graphics standard set by Doom with nice effects like earthquakes and hefty explosions. Also the environment was destructable, you could even play pool. It was filled with gags from beginning to end. New features like security cameras, steroids which made you faster and a 'Holo-Duke' which could fool enemies made this game fun. And there were of course lots of cool weapons like the freezer gun (turn an enemy into a frozen statue, then kick them to bits) and the shrinker (make someone little then step on him). The shotgun was as cool as in Doom and the pipebombs were a nice addition. Duke 3D really is fun because of the realistic settings and the ever-present humor. Unfortunately the puzzles still only consisted of finding the right button to press. After you cleared earth from those pesky aliens you can take the fight to the aliens spaceship. Everywhere you will find prisoners and chained women (which you can't free, but you can shoot them). The fact that you could shoot prisoners (and strippers on earth too) caused some commotion with the government and concerned parents. Duke 3D offers full 45 degree views, detailed bitmaps and top shooter gameplay. The only shame is that there aren't many different enemies in the game. With the included Build editor, the internet was soon swamped with new levels which only added to the popularity of the Duke. It set a new standard for gameplay and humor in shooter games.

Duke Nukem 3D Addon Total Meltdown Sierra Online Inc. [top]

This is Sierra's first entry into the world of expansions. "Total Meltdown" comes with 500 all-new levels for Duke Nukem 3D, new textures, animations, sounds and 35 new face-chomping characters are also included. In contrast to most other commercial add-ons each level has been carefully tested and rated. It's designed for Duke:V1.3. There is a Level Customizer. The CD contains a folder called "Anims" for animation, in there are 4 different folders for the differant actions with about 100 gif's for each of the characters in different poses. The textures are also in the gif format. There are FAQs included but they are all old versions of updated docs available on the internet today. This title shouldn't be confused with the PSX conversion of the original Duke Nukem 3D which also was "Total Meltdown".

Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition / Plutonium Pack 3DRealms / GT Interactive [top]

This version offers a new 11-level fourth episode with ingenious level design and 3 new enemies: the Protector Drone, the Pig Cop Tank, and a new boss known as The Alien Queen. It also includes a new weapon, the Microwave Expander, complete with its own ammo. It also has several improvements to the scripting language of the game, allowing the game's active modding community to create new enemies and items without overwriting the existing ones. A feature exclusive to the Atomic Edition is the Fake Multiplayer computer controlled bots which can be launched at the DOS prompt. These bots are capable of putting up a decent offline fight against the player to give a glimpse of what the player can find in real online games or if the player has no available connection. They can also be useful for testing DukeMatch sessions offline during the creation of a map. There are still a lot of gags but the difficulty seems a bit too easy.

The new fourth episode was also released as the plutonium pack for owners of the original Duke3D.

In 2013, a Megaton Edition by Devolver Digital used a new engine that runs natively under new operating systems with enhanced OpenGL graphics. However, the DOS version of Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition is also included (running with DOSBox).

A mediocre shooter with a lot of jumping puzzles. It has Duke-like graphics, although they used their own engine which also allowed for a behind-view. Disable an automated fortress that has been mysteriously reactivated. It's up to you to eradicate the hordes of destructive, cunning enemies. Choose 1st- or 3rd-person player perspectives. 3rd-person perspective allows you to view enemies that sneak up from behind and lets you better control your character's movement. It has twice as many weapons as other games, including deadly ones like the agile spider bomb. 3 distinct characters let you triple the hours of gameplay and make net-play more challenging. Enhance gameplay with unique "picture-in-picture" views that let you switch your views, control your weapons and enemies, and see 2 areas at once. There's over 25 levels and over 20 rippin' weapons. Defeat 20 different types of cunning enemies and bosses. Up to 8 players can compete in deathmatch and cooperative play.

A nice-looking game using the Build Engine (Duke Nukem 3D, Blood) for which a demo was made. Unfortunately, the full game was never completed, I guess it was "fate", but the demo is still worth a try. The beginning of the game takes place on Pymandros. You have been captured by the Lesyrgian Troops who have come to your planet to regain the All-Father. They are keeping you in a guarded area of the temple for interrogation. You can escape by breaking down the door or you can move a barrel to jump into an air duct.

Final Doom ID Software / GT Interactive [top]

When the first levels and editors for Doom came out on the internet, the market was flooded with (mostly bad) compilation cd's. ID software decided to release two (user made) projects bundled with Doom 2: Evolution and The Plutonia Experiment. Work on TNT: Evilution was started by TeamTNT, a group of WAD-making hobbyists. Just days before it was to be released as a free download online, the project was noted and snapped up by id Software, and finished in November 1995. Brothers Dario and Milo Casali, who had contributed four levels to TNT: Evilution, were assigned the task of creating what became Plutonia after having sent an 8-level WAD they had created to American McGee and managing to impress him along with the rest of the id Software crew. They created 16 levels each for Plutonia in four months time, and submitted them in January 1996. There are no new enemies, only new graphics and music. These levels start out great (especially Evolution) but tend to get confusing and less spectacular (just like Doom 2 itself). Also included was Doom95 the official port for Windows 95, which is also available as a patch (see mod/addon section). A Windows 2000/XP/Vista version was released on Steam on Aug 03, 2007 which had executables modified to use a DOSBox variant (v 0.70).

This game is a rail shooter similar to Star Wars: Rebel Assault. There are levels in the first person where the player is limited to shooting enemies with a goal somewhat awkward, but also phases played in a third person view with obstacles to avoid. More than half of the game takes place in "cyberspace". MiraCom's super computer has forcibly taken control of the multinational corporation from its human directors. Unless mankind surrenders the computer will destroy Paris. You play as the Blue Arrow, fighter pilot and computer scientist. As part of the assault force you will pilot your cybership through eleven levels of realistic 3D, from the real world to cyberspace. Follow clues from your allies and unravel twisted puzzles to reach your goal. The only way to escape from MiraCom’s strange cyber world is to fight past the Firewall protecting the evil computer and destroy it. Prepare your assault; the fate of world depends on your skill and intelligence alone.

This is an expansion pack for Hexen. You have to escape from the realm of the dead and make your way to the dark Citadel. There are no new additions to the engine. Three new hubs with 20 big levels and a couple of deathmatch levels make up for a long but not very entertaining game. Up to eight players can now compete over a LAN in multiple deathmatch modes. The final level of the expansion, the Dark Citadel itself, is an arena-like level, which features teleporting waves of monsters and three bosses (Fighter, Cleric, and Mage clones). This pack did not initially include nor enable any music for the extra levels. This was later fixed with dkpatch.

A pretty good shareware raycasting 3D shooter (a.k.a 2.5D shooter) where you are a mercenary in the future hired by one gang to take out another gang. It is the year 15432 during the third age of man. Scavenger hunts mean big money for the criminal elite. Covertly recruited by an enigmatic faction of the A.V.C. you are a member of the red hunter elite acquisition squad. Using your needling ship, the Red Hunter, it is your job to wrap through to unsuspecting fringe worlds... plummet from orbit in your drop ship, suppressing noncooperative entities (NOPs) as best you can in order to acquire your primary target items. The size and speed of the drop ship should be sufficient to drive noncooperatives from the drop zone upon impact. In short, if it's moving around, kill it... and if it's not nailed down, steal it. Don't be put off by the first few dull levels, the game gets better in quality as it progresses. It has a random item generator so ammo, health and other items appear in different places when you replay the game. It features music by reknowned demoscene musician Andrew Sega (Necros), including his famous track "Point of Departure". There was a re-release with some possible changes in 1997 as Assassinators. In Dec/2014, the original developer released the game as freeware along with the source code and a partially completed Windows port.

You're Dick Danger, D.A., and your bikini-clad girlfriend has been captured by the Evil Boss (that's E.B. to you and me). You must kill a bunch of things and sit through the worst video ever created for a computer game until you get the final confrontation, where - you'll just have to play to find out.

This is a Doom clone from the summer of 1996. Terrible textures, awful gameplay and bad controls make a really abysmal game. The 200mb of live-action cutscenes can't save this game either. There's 14 CD audio tracks with 11 bands (featuring ANTHRAX), and 11 action packed levels. It also includes Game Builder Pro/3D Lite mission editor.

When an obscure branch of the CIA hires a convicted killer to do their dirty work for them, she gets caught up in a maelstrom of intrigue and power. You control the not-so-innocent heroine as she works through the objectives set for her by her superiors. When the killings she performs move from dictators and anti-American terrorists to prominent businessmen and politicians, she begins to realize she is helping an organization bent on national domination. And she is the only one who can stand in there way.

In the early 1930's, Tess Conway, obsessed with ancient Egypt, and her guests vanished without trace... right in the middle of a wild party on the Conway island estate. Sixty years after this events it's your mission to investigate the strange events that took place in those days. Though it's graphically a typical Doom clone, there are some differences: the game has one huge level instead of many smaller ones which allows you to return to old places at any time, i.e. to pick up health packs or ammunition. Also the spirits of Tess and her guests appear occasionally and bring the story of that evening to light helping you to find keys, to unlock doorways, to locate secret passages and to solve puzzles. You must explore the huge estate and its hundred rooms while acquiring needed objects and dispatching sixteen different types of enemies including ducks, hunters, flying heads, evil cooks, crazy clowns, ugly rats, smoking skeletons, and many others. You can check your position at any time by using a map. This is a fun game for those who like haunted mansions. In 2012, a fan-made remake using Adobe Flash CS3 engine was released. It adds sounds from Fallout 2 & Silent Hill 2. On July 23, 2015, ZOOM Platform announced the release of an updated version of Killing Time exclusively for their store. The update work was done by Jordan Freeman Group and published by ZOOM Platform and Prism Entertainment. It made the game compatible with new OS and fixed some sprites to look similar to those FMV enemies in the 3do version but it still uses the maps from the PC version instead of the 3DO ones.

Marathon 2: Durandal Bungie Software [top]

This is a conversion of the popular Mac shooter. It has reached cult-status on the Mac, on the PC however it gets lost between better titles. Made by Bungie, the makers went on to later massive success with the Xbox shooter Halo series. Marathon included a strong plot, revealed through a series of computer terminals, and multiple misson types such as rescue, exploration, extermination, and retrieval, a radical change from the simplistic "blast anything that moves" style of most earlier FPSs. It is arguably the first game to use AI controlled teammates, unarmed/ambiant characters, dual wielding, secondary functions on weapons, and free look, most of which are widely used to this day. However, these games did not reach a wide audience, being released on the Apple Macintosh platform, and only Durandal (the second in the trilogy) being released on Windows. All games have since been made available, free of charge, to Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X (see Mod/Addon page). The Aleph One release of Marathon 2: Durandal includes the classic graphics, and revamped high-definition textures and monsters from the Xbox Live Arcade edition.

It seemed that you finally escaped Durandal's grasp at the end of Marathon 2, yet for reasons unknown the rampant AI has returned in its stolen alien vessel with a distressing message: a terrible force has been unleashed in the galaxy and the very fabric of time and space is at stake. As the primary enforcer of Durandal's will you once again take on the role of the lone security officer from the Marathon, your quest this time being to follow Durandal's conscience as it warps from different locations in time and space and somehow make sense of what is going on. This is the third and final entry in Bungie's FPS series. It uses the same engine and graphics from its predecessor but features a whole new slew of maps to fight through as well as including a branching storyline that takes the plot to different places depending on how you complete each level. A new feature allows physics models to be built into maps, meaning parameters controlling everything from the behavior of weapons to gravity to which monsters are friends and which are foes can change from level to level. To further increase value, the game includes Forge and Anvil, the level and object editing tools used by Bungie to create the Marathon games as a bonus feature. In 2005, Bungie released the entire trilogy to the public in 2005 as freeware, allowing the games to be freely downloaded.

This is a shareware Doom clone made with the Pie In The Sky Game Creation System. The shareware release consists of four levels while the registered version has twenty. There is no story or plot to this game. The player walks, or runs, around a maze looking for the exit and shooting and/or avoiding guards and other creatures that are encountered. Some doors open automatically while others require key cards. The default weapon is the 'Ninja Kick' but other weapons, such as a shotgun which does not kill but instead immobilizes the target in a pile of brown goo, can be found during the exploration of the maze. These weapons do not automatically get added to the players arsenal when the character passes over them however, the player must press the 'Enter' key to deploy them. The same mechanism applies to reading messages.

This is set in an area around the ancient Egyptian city of Karnak in the late 20th Century. The city has been seized by unknown forces, with forces sent to the valley of Karnak, to uncover the source, disappearing. You are a hardass marine sent in to the valley as the hero to save Karnak and the World. The player finds himself battling hordes of evil creatures including mummies, anubis guardians of the dead, Scorpions and Evil spirits. The chopper which brings you crashes down and from then on you make your way through lots of puzzles and enemies. The PC conversion (from the Sega Saturn) of Exhumed used the Build engine, and does not have the true 3D maps and dynamic lighting as the console version. This version shares sprites with the console versions. The level system is not hub-based in this version, but rather a linear progression, similar to Doom. A lot of gameplay mechanics from the console versions have been altered here as well. As you start the game, all you have to defend yourself is a machete, but just as in any one man war, there are plenty of weapons and pgwer-ups just waiting to be grabbed: an M-60 machine gun, hand grenades, a flamethrower, and a slew of magical items that do everything from making you invincible to replenishing your life meter. Some areas aren't accessible unless you push objects around, either revealing new doorways or providing a stepping stone to jump over a wall. Because there are several places where you have to perform some accurate leaps, the inclusion of a third-person perspective can be a big help in calculating jumps. And the magical items add depth to gameplay because you have to decide what to use and when to use it, not to mention collecting enough "magical essence" to enable to you unleash the spells. And a training mode allows you to get used to the interface and various commands without worrying about enemies. While 12 multiplayer-only levels is acceptable, it doesn't begin to approach the number of multiplayer levels in Duke or Quake. What's more, there's no option to play with monsters on, and you can't exit from one level to another - to move to a new level you have to quit and start a new game.

After the fall of Communism, Poland has become an attractive destination for criminals from the East. To put an end to illegal dealings, the Polish government decided to set up a special anti-terrorist unit called GROM. The player takes on the role of the commander, replacing his predecessor killed in the previous mission. Prawo krwi (Blood right) has three different play type sections, the first being a side-scrolling beat'em up. The character walks to the right and defeats enemies. The game is divided into consecutive missions; some of the missions (two and six) involve first-person shooter gameplay, while the third type of a mission (four and eight) is a simple car chase with a time limit. Each mission is introduced through a short briefing. The player has limited energy and a few extra lives. The main character and all enemies were created using digitized images, recording the actors before performing complicated camera moves and strikes. Some of defeated enemies leave power ups, such as: additional energy, temporary invincibility, extra points and extra life.

This is a first-person shooter that makes use of Bungie's Marathon 2 engine. Cathryn Mayfield, who was your friend and an influential senator, has been murdered in her office and now the building is swarming with armed mercenaries. You must fight your way past them and obtain access keys for various parts of the building to uncover secret documents to solve the mystery and expose a conspiracy. Prime Target adds many new features to Marathon engine, including ducking, breaking glass, bullet-holes and blood splashes on doors and walls, many new kinds of access cards, swinging doors and most importantly, movable objects and non-linear play. The various levels represent different parts of a building and you may return to earlier levels in order to access previously unreachable areas.

Quake ID Software [top]

After the success of Doom, Quake was announced as the next revolutionary step in first person shooters. The expectations were extremely high, but there was some disappointment when the shareware version was released. Although the engine was completely new and quite impressive, the actual game was good but nothing near amazing. ID reduced fps-gameplay to its bare minimum: you didn't even have a use-button anymore. Enemies were made out of polygons instead of bitmaps and were well animated. The engine allowed for detailed light effects and detailed water which made the surroundings more realistic. Unfortunately almost all the action took place in brown dungeon-like levels which was a shame considering the engine was capable of much more. The few levels with castles in them were much more convincing. For all Duke 3D fans it was also a drawback that the environment was 'dead': everything was solid, not even glass could be broken. The weapons were well animated but were not very innovative, just like the use of ammo and health packs. What saved Quake were the polygon-based enemies which were quite scary and convincing, like the zombies who threw their own flesh at you. Also the control scheme was well executed. The levels aren't very big but the fact that they were real 3D for the first time (with enemies above and below) and some traps still made them entertaining. Also the fact that you couldn't duck and your jumps were quite lame didn't impress people. But then there was also the multiplayer portion which attracted more attention. The levels were just about right in size and allowed different tactics. Though it only came with deathmatch out of the box, the multiplayer was terribly fun. After the increasing popularity of Quake-Dm, ID released the source code of Quake which allowed developers to come up with innovative mods like CTF, Team Fortress and Quake Rally. After the release of a 3dfx patch players now had hardware acceleration which made the graphics even more impressive. A landmark title if only for the engine and its multiplayer fame. Quake's greatest influence was felt in network-based multiplayer gaming. Because of QuakeSpy, later known as GameSpy, Quake was the first FPS game to really break out of the LAN and gain a widespread fanbase dedicated to multiplayer Internet gaming. Quake also innovated by actively encouraging user-made modifications. These "mods" contributed to its longevity and popularity with players; in some cases (such as Team Fortress) they even developed a semi-independent existence.

Quake 'em Cobra Computing, Ltd. [top]

This is one of the many inofficial level collection cds. Only the readme is in German, the rest of the content is English. It contains levels, tools, graphics, cheats and so on. The games for which there is material on the cd are: C&C, Doom 1+2, Duke3d, Heretic, HeXen, MechWarrior 2, MS Flight Simulator, NBA Live, Quake, ROTT, Sim City, Sim City 2000, US Navy Fighter, WarCraft and WarCraft II.
Just as one would expect, this compilation is a mixed-bag. On the one hand the makers seem to have downloaded everything from the net that had one of the games names in its title (like a demo map for HeXen, showing off scripting for those who'd like to map themselves!). But among the tons of random stuff on this cd there's the occasional good map, too.
"Good" means "playable" in this case. However this doesn't mean that those maps are no fun as well. It simply means that you cannot judge the old material from todays standards. If you tend to do so, keep away. For those who did not grow up with these games, it's often hard to imagine what editing was like in that time. You have to bear in mind that it was often rather "hackish" and people were making fullbright square-rooms with thousands of monsters and just as much powerups as well as the most powerful weapons right in front of the player. Also many people discovered some specials, found them to be cool and used them all over the map again and again. Keeping this in mind, the fact that there are levels that do not relay on the player finding doors that have just an ordinary wall texture and also use reasonable architecture are not even half bad. It's the same thing with the maps for the strategy games: lots of insanely stupid maps and a few acceptable to good ones. I didn't take a look at the other games, though, as I don't own them. And I also didn't bother to take a look at anything else than the levels.

Quake Addon: Dark Hour Microforum [top]

POWs are trapped in the world of Quake, soldier, and it's your job to go in and rescue them! This promising premise may well be the best thing about Microforum's well-intentioned, but spotty, offering. The CD is broken up into several sections. The useful and well-organized level installer lists all of the 23 new levels and gives a brief summary of each, complete with helpful hints and a recommendation for either single-player or deathmatch play. When you've decided which levels sound like they'd launch your grenade, you can simply install them with the touch of a button. When actual play time comes, just a couple of mouse clicks load the level of your choice. Unfortunately, when the actual action starts things get a little sketchy. While the levels are inventive and promise plenty of surprises and excitement for deathmatches, the graphics and sound fall far behind the quality of the original id offering. In an attempt to facilitate deathmatch play, each level is extremely crowded with passages, columns, weapons, and power-ups. In addition, the Dark Hour is aptly named. In an effort to create multiple shadowy hiding places, each level is darker than the one before it, making it virtually impossible to see anyone or anything around you. Finally, the distinctive qualities of each level don't offer the continuity necessary for single-player action, making anything played alone a mere practice session for later multiplayer confrontations. The CD also offered an extensive list of worldwide Quake servers, information sites, and gameplay hints.

Realms Of The Haunting Gremlin / Interplay [top]

Realms of the Haunting is a relatively unknown game due to Interplay apparently not realising they had such a potential hit on their hands and expended minimal effort in marketing ROTH. You take on the role of Adam Randall, a young American chap whose father was the pastor of a small Cornish village. Your father is recently deceased, and the opening scene finds you in the dark of night in the back of a taxi on your way to a large old house that was somehow connected with your father's mysterious death. As you enter the house the front door shuts behind you, is sealed by a magical ward, and thus the game begins. At first, most of the house is sealed off by doors that are magically warded, but as the game progresses you eventually find a way to get past each door. ROTH utilises full-motion video sequences filmed with professional actors to advance the very creepy story. Early on in the game your character meets a fetching English lass named Rebecca with whom you can discuss many aspects of the interesting reading material and people you will encounter. Unfortunately, she won't help you at all when it comes to a fight. ROTH has quite a lot of combat throughout, interspersed with some clever puzzles. Fortunately you can choose between: Easy, Normal, Hard, and Very hard for the combat difficulty. At first you will find only mundane weapons like a pistol or sword, but later on you come across some magical weapons that are much more powerful yet tricky to use as they take time to recharge. You can pause the action at any time by popping up your inventory, from which you can access health potions, change weapons, etc. Solving puzzles also have an easy or hard setting. This game is highly recommended!

Your mission is to teleport yourself to the Cyborg world and eradicate all life there, before they can destroy earth. A massive arsenal of powerful futuristic weapons will help you succeed. The graphics and the level design are similar to the ones seen in Rise of the Triad, however more futuristic. One really special thing about this game is REX++. This is a programming language within the game, that let's you develop your own programs and games within Rex Blade itself helping you strengthen your abilities and reflexes. Rex Blade was programmed by Xtreme games and released by Simon&Schuster. It was originally planned to release episodes at different times, but only the first episode was ever released (The Battle Begins). Two more episodes were much later released as Rex Blade: The Apocalypse. Xtreme Games even re-released this game as Domination. The game's pretty bad with worse graphics than Doom.

While navigating through five in-depth levels of the maze-like castle, players must pick up keys and collect spells to open secret passages and ward off the evil witch. The 3D gameplay is non-violent, "Doom"-like, and features tools such as bubble gun, de-energizer and more. Customize nine variations of game play by choosing from three levels of difficulty and three types of robots with different powers. View through the eyes of the robot or choose the full screen option giving a third person point of view. Santa Slayer Digital Dialect [top]

Looking for a break from talking with the in-laws? Santa Slayer is a mindless, twisted game, with little if any redeeming value--but it can provide some cheap entertainment, if that's what you're in the mood for. The North Pole is inhabited by evil elves and bogus Santas, and your mission is simple: Kill them. Santa Slayer is a first-person POV game; you play it with a gun in each hand. You use the arrow keys to move around and get your enemies in your crosshairs. Meanwhile, you must dodge explosive gifts hurtled at you by the evil Santas.
Because the game is free, you shouldn't expect terribly sophisticated graphics. Also, the game behaved a bit oddly when we installed it: It gave us an error message saying we had "Insufficient hardware resources." However, we quickly clicked the "OK" button, clicked the logo, and were then presented with single-player or multi-player options. After that, the game loaded successfully. The game was made as a technology demo for the developer's 3D game engine (Cancon).

This sequel to Space Hulk gives you a much-improved full-screen 3d FPS experience in addition to the tactical elements of this Warhammer franchise conversion. You start out as a lowly soldier fighting in FPS mode but as you progress through accomplishing your missions, you will gain rank and the ability to control your own troop and issue commands to them. You will then be able to take over for any of your troops and fight again in FPS mode. An entertaining game with good atmosphere and graphics and the added tactical elements make you think between the action fighting.

Strife: Quest For The Sigil Rogue / Velocity, CDV [top]

On an alien planet you fall in the hands of radical monks called 'The Order'. Their adversaries, the rebels called the 'The Force', seem to be much nicer. Strife is not a typical shooter, it has some definite RPG aspects. Experience makes your aim and fatigue a lot better. Also, the vast amount of enemies make you sneak a lot more. Information and missions are received from conversations with the townfolk. Strife is reminiscent of Cybermage and System Shock even with the Doom-inspired graphics. Annoying is the fact that although you can save anytime, there's just one place to do that. This doesn't make you tend to wander around which is a shame. Strife is an adequate game with some neat ideas but it doesn't stray far from the path set by System Shock.

Subterraneans (cancelled) Full Moon Digital Media [top]

This demo disc contains a prototype release of the first-person shooter Subterraneans and the digital comic Origins of the Puppet Master by Full Moon Features imprint Full Moon Digital Media. Neither title was published, and they exist only in this unfinished state. Subterraneans uses the DOS Pie in the Sky engine and seems at least loosely based on one of the studio's unproduced movies. It's noticeably incomplete: it leans heavily on the default assets included with the software, crashes if music is enabled, has totally incoherent level design, and is missing about half its content. But it exists – however barely playable – in this demo form. Origins of the Puppet Master incorporates live-action footage from the horror film Puppet Master III: Toulon's Revenge and requires at least Windows 3.1.

Terminator, The: SkyNet Bethesda Softworks / Virgin Interactive [top]

This is a sequel to Future Shock which allowed for a resolution of 640x480. Contrary to Future Shock it uses cutscenes as mission briefings, but they don't really add much to the game. As before, the missions are quite varied and also offer flying and driving sequences. Water was added, but without much use since you can't swim. Other graphic additions include particles and daylight missions which add to the setting. Unfortunately, like its predecessor, Skynet is riddled with bugs. Also multiplayer is only available on LAN , which is a shame since it has many variations through the use of vehicles. Skynet is a fun game although it's too short. The variation and rich setting make you forget about the bugs. By the way, if SkyNET is installed as well as Terminator: Future Shock, it will give the previous game improved graphics and multiplayer capabilities among other enhancements.

Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri (Free Fall) Looking Glass / Virgin Interactive [top]

In Terra Nova you are a member of a special unit battling against pirates. Looking Glass, who became famous with Ultima Underworld and System Shock, released this on their own label. Just like their previous efforts, this game is hard. The complicated story which is told through cutscenes has the the necessary surprises in store. You move around great distances on a planet surface. The graphics were not top-notch but the physics used were quite correct. If you see a far away sea or mountain you could actually reach it, walking uphill added to your fatigue and guns are more effective if you shoot downhill. Since you are part of an elite unit, you get some assistance from your squad mates, who have their own characteristics and behave differently to various situations. You can even order them around before you advance on an enemy position. Also usefull is a drone which will inform you of the surroundings. You can only save between missions, which is annoying because of the big and complex levels. Before a mission you choose your squadmates and their gear. Needless to say you use different settings for a scouting mission than for a battle. Another annoying fact is that at the end of a mission you get picked up by a ship - which won't land until every enemy is destroyed, so you can search for that last pesky unit. Terra Nova is more about tactics than run-and-gun shooting. Because of this and its complexity, shooter fans ignored it and tactical fans rather played Command & Conquer. And so Looking Glass had a big flop on their hands with this ambitious and certainly not bad title.

Tetsujin Returns [J] Synergy Interactive [top]

Tetsujin returns in this sequel to Iron Angel of the Apocalypse, a shooter series on 3DO console. The story picks up shortly after the events of the previous game. After his showdown with the Scientist and the Android, Tetsujin finds himself disembodied. A mysterious corporation known as SCR gives you a new body, but their plans for your are mysterious. The format of this game is mostly similar to the first. This is a first person shooter that relies heavily on video cutscenes to tell a story. The graphics engine has been improved greatly, giving this game a much faster pace than it's predecessor. Whereas the original used a combination of live actors and CG, this one uses CG to depict the humans as well.

Transland Origin [top]

In this game the player buys a spaceship and after a while you crash on a planet. From here on there's one mission: escape. One of Origin's best-kept secrets, Transland is a fun and wacky short 3D action / RPG designed by several Origin programmers in their spare time and released for free. The plot is made out of humorous stuff hardly seen in Origin's commercial game. Smooth graphics, sense of humor, and lots of neat gadgets to find and use makes this is a fun "light" action / RPG game. The game is plagued with difficult controls though. Now you can see the lighter side of Origin's programmers.

This is based on the Michael Crichton film Westworld where cyborgs malfunctioned in a theme park and started killing the human guests. You have to go through 3 theme parks of Samuraiworld, Spaceworld, and Westworld, while interacting with other characters, killing all the cyborgs and shutting down the park. The A.I. of the characters is really bad as are the graphics. The premise is interesting...maybe they'll make a proper game of this in a remake.

Witchaven 2: Blood Vengeance Capstone / Intracorp [top]

You awaken after the festivities in which you indulged after your adventures in the first game only to find that the sister of the witch you killed is after revenge. Witchaven 2 is once again a combination of RPG and shooter. You can use melee, ranged weapons and magic spells. You gain experience through battling opponents. Compared to the first Witchaven the graphics have improved (SVGA) and so has the difficulty. If you liked the first game, this isn't a bad choice. But, don't expect something revolutionary. It had some improvements over the original game such as wielding two weapons, one in each hand. In the game you collect silver, gold, and experience points, but there does not appear to be any place that you can use these things. There are nice lava flows, shaded dark corridors of walls, outdoor locations, curved archways sloped floors, and ceilings, reflective water, stained glass, large open air arenas, spiral staircases, and elaborate rooms all beautifully done with intricate and interesting details, such as nails on bridges suspended with chains. Unlike Witchaven, it came with the Build level editor which meant that you were now able to create your own levels for the game.

XS: Shield Up Fight Back Sales Curve Interactive / GT Interactive [top]

The game is set in the far future during a gladiator style blood sport. The main character was told about the event from an associate who is believed dead at the start of the game. You must fight through a number of rounds of Free for all deathmatch style combat, choosing a pair of weapons to use before the match begins. The battles are to the death with the corpses of the losers used as meat for fast food burgers. A game with futuristic gladiatorial fights but with weak graphics. It's very deathmatch-style oriented and just like Quake3 later on, tries to give enemies character traits so that they differ not only in appearance.

ZPC takes place in a futuristic first-person shooter environment where Arman must liberate the world from the Black Brethren, a crooked organization that has stripped citizens of their freedoms and littered buildings with their propaganda. Enemies include variations of foot soldiers and bureaucrats that swarm in droves, defending their evil empire. The hero is armed with Johnny 7, a weapon that evolves into a pistol, machinegun, shotgun, grenade launcher, electromagnetic rail gun and vaporizer. Where it differs from other shooters is that the main character uses chi force powers to flip switches, hit buttons, open doors, and jump. These powers make simple tasks difficult since he must look down and punch the floor to propel himself over hazards. Orbs must also be collected, and are few and far between. It runs on a modified version of Marathon 2's game engine and includes music by the industrial band the Revolting Cocks, and art by underground artist Aidan (KMFDM) Hughes.

This is an obscure virtual shooting game like Virtua Cop. It was made in Taiwan and features: 6 three-tier mission, and animated CG cutscenes. It's bundled with DirectX3 and GameBIOS to support joysticks, light-guns, 3D glasses and Head Mounted Displays. Also, it has support for multiplayer (hotseat, TCP/IP, IPX, modem connection, serial connection). Overseas Mission is a different version with new levels. Also, A4Tech included the game with its PC Gun Model PG-5 controller.

Amok Scavenger / GT Interactive [top]

This is a 3rd person shooter using Voxel graphics and based on the Mechwarrior universe. Amok is a solid conversion of an underrated FPS on the SEGA Saturn console that offers several interesting gameplay innovations that were sadly overlooked, the best of which is the blend of strategy elements. The plot is nothing special - it's just another variant of the cliché corporations-rule-the-future-world premise, but with a neat twist that explains your role in the game. Basically, two corporations who had been fighting each other for dominance over the world had decided to sign a cease fire agreement. World peace would, naturally, hurt the profits of many weapon sellers and other shady underworld merchants. You play mercenary pilot Gert Staun, who's been hired by the most powerful underworld corporation, The Bureau, to stir things up between these two corporations and, hopefully, get them back to their profitable warring ways. You do this by piloting a versatile, all-terrain vehicle called a Slambird (which looks somewhat like a walker from Star Wars, only modified), wreaking havoc in ten Mission Phases in four different environments; barren wastelands, the ocean floor, Loso City, and subterranean tunnels. While the wasteland and ocean floor look remarkably similar (the only real clues that you're underwater are the sharks, enemy Scuba Grunts, and the twin screws your Slambird sprouts for propulsion), they are nonetheless fun to roam around. Gameplay is deceptively simple: blast everything that moves, collecting power-ups before moving on to the next level. Strangely, Amok only supports the keyboard-no joystick or mouse allowed. As you trudge through each level, all manner of biomechanical beasties are out to stop you - Grunts, Missile Tanks, Droids, and minefields, to name a few. They're all relatively slow and stupid (especially the minefields), but there sure are a lot of 'em, and they're very persistent within their defined patrol areas. You can pick up various power-ups that litter around the level to boost firepower and repair the Slambird. True to its console origins, you can't save anytime you want to in the game. Instead, once every couple of missions, you'll receive a password that will allow you to restart the game at one of five midpoints. Despite its deceptive simplicity, Amok offers a significant strategic challenge as well; the guns- blazing approach will almost guarantee certain death, forcing you to be stealthy and observant to survive long enough for those elusive save passwords. Overall, it's a nice little shooter that doesn't hold up to the best of breed, but it an all-around solid game that is well worth a look.

Area 51 was one of the first 3D FPS arcade shooters and immensely popular. In this PC port, the plot involves an alien infection at the famous "secret" military base. You are a soldier, a member of the Special Tactical Advanced Alien Response Team. A practice mode allows you to shoot mindlessly at the mutants. The graphics are low-res, which allows for an impressive frame rate. Your task is simply to shoot everything that moves, except for members of your team. You simply shoot at barrels, ammo crates, windows, paintings (?!?), machinery, and the occasional mutant. It has 6 levels, a variety of hidden areas, items, weapons and power-ups.

Zep Nepher (a possible pop culture reference to Led Zeppelin) needs the player's help to restore rock and roll music to the interstellar vastness. Bad guys will have to be defeated in the far off Bee-Gee cluster (a pop culture reference to the classic band, the Bee Gees). The player gets to use an awesome display of firepower. While its beginning levels are a modern adaptation of Asteroids, the later levels deviate from this concept considerably.

Bedlam is a faster, more mindless version of the Crusader/Syndicate school of gaming: isometric view, hard-core hellraisin'. In the future, we have come to rely on bio-mechanical creatures for our menial labor. Now these creatures have run amok and are raging across the city. As leader of a squad of Remote Assault Tanks (RATs), your job is to destroy the biomex wherever they are, and strike at the heart of their operations by wrecking key installations. Three RATs are at your disposal, each controlled from an "satellite uplink". They move and turn fast, and carry a nice assortment of weapons on their pylons. You start the game with a certain amount of money, and must buy weapons to arm each RAT. Bombs, bouncy grenades, sticky grenades, photon guns, conventional guns, delayed fuse bombs, and more provide a pretty good assortment of offensive weapons, with more available as you get deeper into the game. Defensive equipment like shields and sensors can also be fitted, though only two are allowed per RAT. Each mission has a primary goal and a number of subgoals, and begins with your RAT or RATs being dropped into the combat zone. The graphics here are, for the most part, pretty sharp, high-res visuals, with multi-level buildings, well-animated monsters, and plenty of fiery explosions. Each mission features a number of different elements that you need to understand to get through, tempering the action with a fair amount of problem solving. Most of this is based around switches, power fields, gates, and moving platforms which enable you to get from one level or area to another. In addition, money, power-ups, armor, weapon loads, and other prizes are scattered throughout the terrain. Almost everything in Bedlam can be shot or blown up and levels tend to move fast and furious, with lots of action and lots of carnage.

Crusader: No Regret (The Next Chapter) ORIGIN Systems / Electronic Arts [top]

No Regret begins 46 hours after the events in No Remorse. A WEC freighter headed for the Moon picks up the Silencer's escape pod, and the Captain, upon moonfall, makes contact with the local Resistance. The WEC uses the moon as both a mine and prison, where most of the political dissidents and Resistance members are forced to extract a precious radioactive compound, Di-Corellium. This mineral is the basis of virtually all energy production on Earth. Approximately half of all known reserves are on the moon, and a shortage of Di-Corellium would cause serious problems for the WEC. For this reason, Chairman Draygan is on the moon to oversee the Di-Corellium production, which has been lagging recently—possibly due to incursions from the Resistance cell on moon, at the hidden Dark Side base. He is, to say the least, not happy when he learns that the Silencer appears to have survived and may well be on the moon.
Over the course of No Regret's ten missions, the Silencer works to undermine the WEC presence on the moon, culminating in a showdown with Chairman Draygan himself. The WEC's lunar headquarters are destroyed and the Resistance takes control of mining operations, with the hint of further conflicts with the WEC. The game's story is notably more simplified and straightforward than that of No Remorse.

The original Cyberia was a rail shooter that combined adventure game elements with Rebel Assault style action sequences. Cyberia 2 is essentially the same, except the 3D rendered graphics have been improved, and the quantity of in-game movies has been increased. It continues the story of the first - after destroying FWA leader Devlin and his orbital headquarters, Zak and the Cyberia weapon crash land back to Earth, where they are picked up by an FWA team led by the maniacal Dr. Corbin who sticks Zak in cryo-storage and uses the remains of the Cyberia weapon to create a doomsday virus known as nano-toxin. His FWA employers want the nano-toxin to put down a growing rebel movement, but Corbin intends to use it to kill millions and "reshape the world as we know it". Three years later Zak is thawed out by a renegade FWA Major, and together the two of them have to find Corbin and stop his Sinister Plan. Also, it turns out that Zak's mutated tissue can now be used to recreate the ultimate weapon in unlimited supply. Zak must blast guards, ATVs, hovercraft, in some spectacular arcade sequences. Your rapid-fire aim will be put to the test as you take out enemy vehicles while coping with such obstacles as bumpy roads and barrel rolls, all created with mind-bending detail. During an especially outrageous battle while hovering above a high-rise tower, taking out a few sides of the building along with FWA jets makes for some striking scenery. When not picking off the FWA's jack-booted thugs, Zak must solve a variety of puzzles that will short-circuit the regime's plan. These logic problems range from simple to very complex and, in many cases, if they're not correctly executed you will be. Fortunately, the shooting is less difficult this time (probably Xatrix got too many complaints from gamers who blistered their knuckles or broke the joystick in frustration), although you still cannot save anytime you want.

They take up residence in the oceans of earth, and begin to launch attacks on shipping. Plus, they're also slowly raising the level of the oceans, trying to flood humans from the planet. Your mission is to Stop them. The game is split up into a number of stages, taking place in various locations, the ultimate aim being to make your way through to the end of that level in once piece. There are a lot of cut-scenes that further the story. Set in 2500 A.D., this action thriller features stunning 3-D graphics and a powerful musical score. Deadly Tide's pulse-pounding action requires lightning-fast reflexes. As hydrofighter pilots, gamers destroy aquatic-based aliens while venturing into numerous underwater passageways, adding to replay value and truly challenging gamers. Using the game's 360-degree full-spherical movement at climactic moments during game play, gamers are taken from the ruins of the S.S. Ballard to a nonstop, suffocating race against time in which pilots must fend off alien gunfire as they race to escape the enemy compound. The seamless integration of cinematic sequences adds to the intensity of game play. The game features nonstop encounters with powerful biomechanical aliens, who continually challenge players to make strategic as well as combative choices. For example, the aliens' underwater defensive shield will vaporize human craft; can the shield be disabled, or is there a way around it? The wrong answer means certain death.

This is a top-down racing game where the player can rely on more than speed to be the number one, and brains must be riding along brawn to get the most from each race. Starting with only $495 and a lowly car, the player must compete in one of three races (picked from 19 tracks) with increasingly difficult opponents but higher rewards, getting enough money to buy new cars, choosing from six models, and enhance them with one to four upgrades for engine (increase top speed), tires (improve traction, allowing to drift less on turns) and armor (reduces the damage caused by opponents, mines or collisions). But there are more ways to spend money by reaching the underground market where the player can buy land mines (can be dropped to get opponents directly behind or create traps in narrow sections), get some rocket fuel (which increases boost speed greatly at the expense of some damage for both the user car and the ones directly behind) or bribe a mechanic to mess around with the best-ranked opponent car. All these upgrades are valid for one race only. The race varies in length depending on the difficulty chosen, but follow the same structure: four drivers with the starting grid set according to the championship table, with the worst placed starting in front and so on, and the first to cross the line after the stipulated number of laps wins or the last driver standing wins. At the same time, the fourth place driver gets no points and no money, including pick up bonuses, and lapped drivers get the same luck. The player can use a booster to increase speed for a few seconds, but once the reserve is depleted, the player has to wait it replenishes or pick up icons scattered on the track. Similar items appear to replenish ammo, repair the car or give small money bonuses. Occasionally, large money and repair items appear, which provide a much larger bonus. Along the money earned in races, there are several bonuses if the player manages to wipe out all competition, complete the race without a scratch or completing a streak of wins, or accepting certain missions for some sponsors, such as collecting steroids and win the race or destroy an opponent. The value of these bonus changes according to the car: a bonus with the Vagabond can be worth as little as $650, but with the Deliverator a mission can be worth 12 grand, regardless of the race selected. The ultimate goal is to top the championship table, and then defeat the Adversary in a special track. A freeware version was released in 2009 that was fixed to run on WinXP/Vista/7 but without multiplayer.

Descent 2 Parallax Software / Interplay [top]

After you dispatched a lot of robots in the original Descent, you're sent back to take out even more of them. Just like in the first game you're mission is usually to free some human captives and to destroy a reactor after which you race towards the exit. The levels are even bigger and more complicated than in the original and since a lot of people had trouble navigating the first Descent, Parallax added a guide bot. This indestructible helper will help you find keys and always returns should you lose him due to a fight. New enemies like the 'Thief' (which steals weapons) and the 'Drainer' (which well, drains energy) add to the excitement (and sometimes annoyance) of the original. The robots are quite smart and come to investigate if they hear gunfire. Descent 2 is fun to play and the guide bot is really a good innovation. The levels however seem to have become worse. They're quite repetitive and monster placement seems to be the same all around. The difficulty level has also been cranked up a few notches and the first Descent wasn't easy to begin with. Destination Quartzon was a version bundled with hardware such as the Logitech WingMan Extreme products and Diamon products featuring the Voodoo Graphics Chipset which contained the first 8 levels plus 2 secret levels.

And finally, there's a driving game where you have to get to certain locations or vehicles and blow them up before the timer runs out based on the third film.

In The Divide: Enemies Within, the player takes control of an explorer on an alien planet. After they land to investigate, they are attacked, where the player is frozen and their partner kidnapped. After being thawed, the player takes control of a mech and sets out to rescue their partner and destroy the alien menace.
The basic gameplay has the player explore through eight different worlds with a total of over 100 different stages in a 3-D environment. The player explores the levels, collecting new weapons and power-ups to fight out the 20 different enemies scattered throughout the level. At the end of each level, the player must fight off an enemy boss before fighting the final boss at the end of the game.

Hellbender Terminal Reality / Microsoft Games [top]

A game similar to Descent and Terminal Velocity. You'll fight on the surface and in Descent-like caverns. Nothing much new has been added. The music and cutscenes however are top notch. Unfortunately you'll get easily lost in the huge levels and sometimes your objectives aren't quite clear. The ship's computer is voiced by actress Gillian Anderson, best known as Agent Dana Scully from The X-Files. It was one of the first games made especially for Win95 (not surprising since it was published by Microsoft). Not bad, but no milestone.

This introduces the 3D battlesport of the future. Players engage in a futuristic street-hockey style game played out on the interior of an elongated ellipsoid arena. Body-checks (weapons are included) go for blood in this game as players can be gruesomely eliminated from the game, including the option to score with an opponent's dismembered head. Power-ups, speed boosts, ramps, and simple team management (for substitutions) are all part of the experience. When one skates through a killball charger while carrying the rok, it will convert the rok into a killball, a high voltage electrocutor that can be thrown at others. Each team owns an arena, which can have any number of fixed objects in any position in the field. Some strategy is required for play, but it's mostly pure action. The game also features multiple skill levels, 12 teams (from a US tournament league), and head-to-head network play (IPX and TCP LAN only). If you are looking for a 3D version of Speedball, this is as close as it gets.

Los Angeles is overrun with evil Nolan's mutant army! Now the player chooses one of six cars which distinguish from each other in strength and handling. Then he drives on Los Angeles' streets and shoots the mutants which attack from all directions. Every car has a machine gun with unlimited ammo. Against bigger enemies like trucks or car piles missiles are more effective but these are limited. There are six levels to beat. Before every level, the player can stock up his ammo with credits he earned by shooting mutants. When crashing against other road users the life bar gets reduced. There are two difficulty levels. The speed is controlled by the game so the player only has to drive left or right and controls the gun.

Arguably the most short-lived and underrated of all Lemmings games, this stars everyone's favorite furry animals, but this time around the challenging (but frustrating) puzzles in the first games are reduced to a version of "capture the flag" in which you must guide a team of 4 lemmings to capture the opposing team's flag. In isometric view, lemmings can splatter their enemies with paintgun, and there are many obstacles they must overcome. The levels contain various puzzles including moving platforms, lemming catapults, and trampolines. Objects available in the game include: Duplicator - Can be used to create additional lemmings up to the maximum amount of four. Can also replace lemmings killed in action. Switch - Can be used to open and close gates, lower platforms and so on. Gate - Gates block certain areas in a level. They can be opened using a switch or key. Keys can be found in exploding crates. Exploding crate - Contain a key or a catapult. Balloon - Can be used to transport a lemming through the air from one specific location to another.

If you're tough enough, ruthless enough, and deadly enough, you'll cruise to sweet victory. Otherwise, you're Maximum Roadkill! It features ten tracks with various challenging terrain such as mineshafts, nuclear blast zones, and orbiting space stations. The player can choose one of eight characters which adds variety to the title. The graphics are quite good for the time and the gameplay well above average. It's one of the undiscovered gems of the racing genre during the time and should easily have been more popular than time has proven.

Virtual World Broadcast TV has renewed their most popular show MegaRace for another season after last year's mind-blowing success. You know, it's that virtual racing game where no one really gets hurt and is pure and mindless entertainment for the masses. For the new season, this "show" has undergone some major changes. First of all, the name is now MegaRace 2 (this is the sequel, of course). Returning as everyone's favorite neurotic host is Lance Boyle along with his new bodacious, yet incredibly brainless, co-host. Watch them insult the drivers, and each other, and make snide comments on today's society in new and improved FMV quality. Because this show is so popular, Virtual World Broadcast TV also realized that there was a need for bigger and badder tracks. They created a whole new set of virtual tracks that have a more sophisticated look and are twice as deadly. There are also new weapons and items for you to buy to upgrade your vehicle of destruction, more on-track hazards and more shoot-'em up action. You can choose between 14 armored cars loaded with weapons of mass destruction, and race on 6 different tracks. Only the cars are rendered in real-time 3d, while the tracks are actually pre-rendered. This allows the player to have very detailed cars and tracks, but limits the interaction with the scenery.

This is an action/wargaming hybrid were you can make the tactical strategic decisions of unit placement, composition, etc. from a strategic top-down map, as well as getting in on the action yourself from a first person perspective. Taking place on the European front in WW2, you get 150 single player missions sprawled on single scenarios or a career mode, where you step up in range with each succesful mission thus increasing the range of orders you can issue on the strategic aspect of the game. You can control 100 units from either the U.S., British or German side and though none has all aspects and characteristics simulated, each handles differently and has different armor/weapondry models. Graphics are 2D svga, and the game uses voxel technology to render the fps 3D sequences.

This underrated game involves a futuristic sport using heavily-armored vehicles playing in tournaments. Originally slated to be a sequel to CyClones, Necrodome took on new life as a wholly original game concept with a brand new in-house game engine capable of handling multiple wall angles, slopes, bridges and buildings with multiple floors. Necrodome pioneered a unique cooperative multiplayer experience that allowed players to work together in combat with one player serving as the driver while the other fired the vehicle's weapons from the turret. This type of gameplay was perhaps the first truly cooperative game mode in an action game.

Pepsi Virtual Reality Game Pepsi Virtual Reality Game [top]

This is a below-average 3D action game from Pepsi, the world's cola giant. Aside from the dubious merit as the first 3D promotional game ever made, there is little to recommend this obscure title. This is basically a simplistic arcade-style game where you use the mouse to avoid steering your ship into wandering asteroids and other galactic obstacles. Along the way, you can pick up Pepsi to replenish energy. You can also try to shoot the obstacles, except it is hard to do given jerky and over-sensitive mouse movements. Another annoyance is the fact that you need to sit through the 15-second introduction scene every time you start the game. Since there is no way you can abort this, and the game isn't worth waiting for the intro to end, it's just another banal promotional title that won't change anyone's opinion about how bad promotional games usually are (before the late 1990s, anyway).

If you are like me and have a lust for arcade action games then you will like Rebel Runner. I must warn you though, the odds of you completing this game is about zero to none. I am an experienced player and had trouble making it to the fourth level - there was just too much action for my puny brain to handle. However, with some perseverance and a whole lot of skill you will find that this game will bring you hours of enjoyment or just a big headache.
Graphics: Some very nice 3D rendered Graphics. However, the main character looks a bit fuzzy. Background graphics and movie sequences are very well done. Good arcade style scrolling effect during game play. As mentioned the background and scrolling effects are cool, and the screen layout doesn't have any distracting features which is a bonus.
Sound and musics: Sound quality is poor.There are very few sound effects and the digitized voice will drive you insane.The musical score isn't bad even though it isn't stereo. I'd say that it even adds to the arcade effect.

Lead by Headmistress Helga, their first course of action is to abduct Aerosmith, America's premier rock band. It's your job to rescue them and make life fun again. Armed with a machine gun and an auto-load multi-CD launcher, you must guide a gunsight around each scene of the six levels of play, shooting everything and anyone that moves and a lot of things that don't move. Many of the things you shoot reveal pickups that will help you along the way. These pickups include CDs, a super gun, laserdiscs (which cause more damage than CDs), shields, skull bombs, and wheat grass shakes, which give you a dose of energy. During your mission, you'll free dancing girls from Los Angeles Club X, destroy NON helicopters, shoot your way inside a chemical factory in the Amazon Jungle, travel to the Middle East to free teens from a mind-control camp, destroy a chemical warehouse in the Pacific Rim, and finally face down the Headmistress herself at a Wembley Stadium Aerosmith concert. Almost all of the graphics are digitized as are Aerosmith too. There are also lots of fmv videos. Pretty awful game.

Russian Roulette is a 3D action game, and the first game published by Buka, formerly only a distributor in Russia. A ring of planets, connected by galactic portals has become lost in space. The planets are devastated and the portals have been disassembled. It is up to you to you to find the missing parts of the portals so they can be reactivated. Mostly you will have to fight for them, or perform services to the local authorities. You can exit and enter any vehicle you encounter at will, and many have turrets that can rotate independently. In some levels you will be accompanied by an NPC who will guide you to the next portal part. Flying on a stolen device from alien technology does not differ much from those on an F-19 aircraft or a Comanche helicopter. The game was taken into space on the Mir space station in 1997 as part of a promotion. It was one of the first full priced games developed and published in Russia, and the first to sell more than 15,000 units in the Russian market alone.

Cyberspace is in danger again, and you've got to save it. Gameplay is reminiscent of Spectre VR. It's set in a surreal world of bomb-throwing ferris wheels, deadly teddy bears, exploding balloons, bottled brains on unicycles and a Scary-Go-Round, a spinning seagull named Gullicopter, a monstrous creation called Crabzilla and other bizarre enemies. Your objective is to pilot a rocket-mounted pile driver called a Slamjet while shooting, blasting, smashing and jumping anything and everything you see throughout four dangerous regions. Derived from your subconscious, the regions contain four heavily guarded Orb-Ids needed for level progression. Once obtained, you'll then take the orbs to a central location within that level. You must employ a different strategy for each orb you wish to obtain. Obtaining the Orb-Ids won't be easy as you're going up against 16 blood-thirsty opponents lusting for victory. While the default weapon is a Shockball there are a variety of special weapons including Minetraps, a Fasterblaster, a Ripstar and a devastating Torp, which is the most powerful item available. While flying in your futuristic craft, Nodensnaggers and Power Leeches will land on top of you, zapping your energy and draining your power. Graphics are fully 3D with polygonal enemies and objects, and the game touts a dynamic soundtrack composed by alternative rock band God Lives Underwater.

A decent mixture of platform and 3d shooter genres. You play a guy who battles his inner fears in a nightmare. There is a lot of running and jumping off platforms while shooting the occasional enemy. Be careful when avoiding return fire that you don't fall off the edge of your narrow path to your death. You can have a 3rd person or 1st person view. The game does improve as it goes on so give it a try.

Speed Rage Hexerei Games / Telstar Electronic Studios [top]

Speed Rage is a simple arcade-ish fantasy racing game with shooter elements that lets you race either a dune buggy or a boat on various tracks. The game is decent, but it doesn't really have anything to make you quit, say, Big Red Racing. Car controls are very simple, and the complete disregard to real-world physics results more in frustrating gameplay than fun. For example, rounding a corner is almost impossible without hitting curbs, because the game is far too sensitive. But on the other hand, hitting obstacles on the road result in little more than a brief slowdown of your car. All in all, a very average game that really deserves to stay unknown. Although, the game does have a nice modem and network support for those looking for a quick multiplayer game.

The earth is once again threatened by alien forces. The player controls Admiral Leighton who has to coordinate and lead the defense battles on four moons with different geographical features (lava, mountains, forest and underground). Every mission begins with the tactical map where the actual combat situation is shown. Then the player has to equip the vehicles with the appropriate weapons, defenses and other tactical items like satellites or teleports. In every mission the player has a predefined set of the four vehicle types at his disposal (two tanks, a bomber and a battle glider). After these tactical preparations begins the action part of Strike Base: The player controls the vehicles in 1st or 3rd person view and shoots at the alien troops, e.g. rocket launchers, tanks or mines. Of course the player can only use one unit at a time, so he can set waypoints for the others. The vehicles are almost completely mouse controlled, the keyboard used solely to control the speed. Destroyed enemies leave refreshments for the player's equipment, it can also be stocked up at the base. The 15 missions have varied goals, e.g. destroying all enemies, finding escape capsules or destroying specific hostile units. A mission is lost when all units are destroyed or the enemy conquers the player's base. There are four difficulty settings which affect the number and strength of the enemies but only on the two higher settings can all missions be played. It's a decent 3D space shooter that features good graphics for its time, created from an unusual mix of Voxel, 3D vector, and bitmap technologies.

In this Asteroids clone you control your Panther PX-2 ship through successive waves of asteroids and other enemies, which are drawn using ray-tracing techniques. The game features both overhead and 3D sections. In the overhead part, you must eliminate enemy ships and asteroids across several zones in each world. The 3D sections consist of underwater tunnels that link one world to another and they are each defended by a guardian you must defeat. It has five worlds, 30 levels and dazzling warp tunnel sequences, detailed 3D graphics and animations with real-time glow & transparency effects, and a huge selection of weapon and ship upgrades.

SWIV 3D SCi Games Ltd. / Interplay [top]

SWIV 3D is a 3D remake of the original SWIV. It features a voxel-based 3D engine and mission-based play, as well as a myriad of new enemies and completely new style of gameplay. It plays a lot like a typical 3D shooter: you control a helicopter which you must navigate through landscapes, all the while shooting at buildings, vehicles and other planes or helicopters and fullfilling your mission goals. There are also opportunities to use an armoured Jeep. Instead of the top down view of the original, you get a proper 3D view using voxel graphics, from behind whichever vehicle you are controlling, which looks damn good. And you're no longer stuck with flying one way, towards a fiery death. You can now roam all around a 3D landscape, in whichever direction you want. You now have a number of objectives which must be completed. These are mainly of the 'seek and destroy' variety, which have you nipping around the landscape, taking out an enemy installation, before flying off to your next objective. A compass is provided, which automatically points to the direction of the next objective, avoiding any embarrassing 'stopping and asking for directions' situations. You change modes of transport throughout the game; you start off in either the helicopter or the jeep, and there's usually a point somewhere on the level where you can change over to the other means of transport. This adds a tiny bit of strategy to the game, though not enough to deter shoot-em-up freaks. The helicopter is fast, with a wide turning circle, and can move from side to side, to avoid incoming missiles. This means you can usually get away with flying over a base, letting lose your weapons, and zooming over a hill before the enemy can retaliate. There's the obligatory selection of weapons to pick up. These include homing missiles, smart bombs, napalm, power-ups, and a smart bomb. The latter unleashes a nuclear explosion, which sends a shockwave across the ground, taking out most things in its way. Except you. It was re-released as "SWIV 3D Assault" in 1997 with 3Dfx and native Windows 95 support.

T-Mek is essentially an updated Battlezone and was originally a two-player, sit-down, virtual reality fighting arcade game. You are a warrior battling in the T-Mek competition, a hugely popular event in the future. You control a hovercraft and try to blow up everyone else. The action is viewed from your perspective as you travel around the arena. You also have an overall view of where your opponents are. Terrain surfaces and characteristics vary in each battle. In most levels you need to reach a certain score to progress, however there are out-and-out one-off Deathmatch duels to deal with periodically.

Terra: Battle for the Outland / Terra: 2120 Kaon Interactive, Jacked-In, TerraOutlands [top]

This was one of the internet's original Massively multiplayer online role-playing shooting games. Terra is a virtual world played from the first-person perspective with one of several vehicles, originally limited to a medium tank (Rhino), light scout vehicle (Goat), or a heavy long-range self-propelled howitzer (Buffalo). A light attack helicopter (Shrike) was added sometime in 1997 and several other vehicle types have been added since, including a heavy tank (Armadillo) and fast laser-armed recon vehicles both land (Scarab) and air (Phoenix). Also, stationary fort defenses which existed from the start of the game (Thugs) as AI's have been made player-usable. The game has some role-playing aspects to it as each player makes a character whose statistics are tracked continuously. Each player aligns themselves with a clan, and all players start in one of two clans called the "Desert Rats" or "AMOK". Players move from these two beginner/introductory clans by either pledging to existing primary clans or by forming their own clans. While many players do form their own clans most shortly wind up with established large clans since the Terra environment tends to not be friendly to such independent-minded players. Eventually Kaon chose to pursue other directions and allowed the game to stagnate and die. Then along came a gaming group called Jacked-In who added several variations of the Goat as well as a heavy tank (Armadillo) and the failed jet-pack (JOE). Their involvement ended less than pleasantly and Terra went off-line sometime in 2003. That wasn't the end of it however. After several months a player named "Rooster" worked out an arrangement with Kaon to bring the game back and it ran another two years. During this third incarnation, the a majority of the Jacked-In changes (second incarnation) were removed and the game took a new direction, including adding a new watercraft (Barracuda). In early 2005 this arrangement also ended rather abruptly, much to the dismay of the loyal player base. In November 2005, Terra was brought back once again by "Terminox" under a contractual arrangement with Kaon. "Jenga" and "Beast" were invited to return to the fold as developers. With help from the "JKR", "Deft" and other long time players the game was quickly brought back on-line and has been running continuously since. The game's graphics have received several significant face lifts and further development is ongoing. The player base has continued to expand. The game is run by volunteers and from donations. It is a free game to this day. Players are given rank status for the kill ratios they have attained. Higher rank means more privileges, although some of that is controlled by the clan leader for clan security reasons.

This decent game involves a computer that's invented to create a time bubble where someone can go in and explore a different time. However, it's infected by a virus and starts expanding and gobbling up the surrounding area and people. You must go into 8 different time periods, gather weapons and dispatch enemies that the malfunctioning computer sends at you. Explore each screen for weapons or items of use before moving on as you won't be able to return to it. The graphics include pre-rendered backgrounds, polygonal models and even fmv scenes.

You play as Lara Croft, perhaps the most famous game character ever. Agile, tough and good-looking - she made gaming history. Lara is fed up with her life and looks for adventure which she'll get as she's approached to retrieve 3 old artifacts. In typical Indiana Jones fashion you'll visit Mayan temples, Egypt, Greece and even Atlantis. Lots of puzzles and traps break up the shooting. Since the action takes place in long lost cities and ruins, you'll never meet a lot of people, so the enemies consist of wolves, bears, raptors and some more mystical animals. The camera follows Lara as she climbs, jumps, and swims through detailed environs overcoming environmental obstacles and deadly fauna. Moving through levels often involves finding spots where Lara can climb, looking for spots where Lara can use her acrobatic ability, and sliding blocks and pushing levers to solve puzzles and open passageways. Lara is armed with, now trademark, twin pistols with infinite ammunition, but she can pick up higher caliber weapons to take on deadlier human opponents. Lara also comes across restorative health packs and has a compass with which she can orient herself. The graphics were really good for this time and got even better when there was a 3dfx patch released. It was one of the first games to receive a hardware acceleration patch developed by 3dfx Interactive for use with its Voodoo cards. Many jaws dropped to the floor when game players saw the new, enhanced version of Tomb Raider - a version that showcased much cleaner textures and smoother edges. Indeed, Tomb Raider helped fuel the fire of an industry that would grow at an alarming rate. It was an instant hit with many sequels and even spawned 2 movies starring Angelina Jolie, the first of which is the highest-grossing movie ever based on a videogame. It effectively translated Prince of Persia-style platformer gameplay to 3D. Lara Croft was the first game mascot to break the cutesy cartoon mold yet achieve mainstream recognition, and inspired a glut of "sexy" heroines and pandering advertisements. Soon after the release, someone found out how to replace the clothing textures and released a custom "nude patch" (DOS version only of course). It revealed everything and it became a big hype on the net. Despite the unsavory marketing and imagery that surrounded Lara, she was as popular among female gamers as male, and many women credited her with piquing their interest in gaming altogether.

Tunnel B1 Neon / Acclaim [top]

The premise is that in the overly technological Earth of the future, mankind has seen the arms race escalate to the point where one mad dictator has developed the ultimate weapon. Enter you and your nippy little hovery-car in a last-ditch attempt to stop him using it. This involves racing through various underground tunnels, shooting every-thing in sight - and, of course, not dying in the process. Tunnel B1 is a typical Playstation conversion where you glide just above the surface with some sort of tank. It looks quite good at first sight but tends to get repetitive. The objects are highly detailed and the explosions are very satisfying. Sonically everything is top notch, right down to the cd audio musical tracks that accompany the action. Fans of Playstation action games should look into this.

Every year, a mysterious man named Calypso sends e-mails to renowned drivers, inviting them to compete in a tournament called Twisted Metal. The conditions of the tournament are anything but ordinary: opponents fight each other in armored vehicles with mounted weapons. The winner receives an audience with Calypso, and is granted a single wish - a wish without limits, be it money, power, or even our reality itself. In 2005, the annual tournament is held again in Los Angeles, and twelve drivers, each with his own agenda, have come to compete to death. Twisted Metal is a vehicular combat game and the pc version was only released in Japan. The player selects one of the twelve available drivers and takes part in the competition. In the one-player story mode, the player must progress through six combat stages; all the opponents must be destroyed in order to win the race. In the two-player co-op mode, players choose a battlefield and control two cars in an attempt to get rid of the competition. All the vehicles are equipped with two mounted machine guns; though relatively weak, they have unlimited ammunition. Other weapons can be picked up by driving over them during the races. These include fire and homing missiles, land mines, tire spikes, and others. Each participant has a life bar, which can be replenished by entering a specific area on the stage.

Virtua Cop is a first-person shooting game converted from an arcade game in which you play a member of the white-clad Virtua City Police Department. You've received a hot tip about a bunch of arms dealers and are sent in to arrest them. The game wouldn't be any fun if these guys went quietly, so any time you encounter one of the mirror-shaded thugs, they're either leaping out to surprise you with a bullet or trying to snipe you from a high rooftop. You have no control over your cop's movement, and instead are moved along through each 3-D environment while attack situations are set up for you. At this point, winning the game is all a matter of reflexes and timing. On the screen, the enemy who is closest to being able to fire at you is surrounded by a timed targeting reticle. The game becomes intensely cinematic when you shoot these guys. Enemies who are up on rooftops make dramatic, several-story plummets and if your cross hairs are fixed on the enemy, you can hit him with two, three, four bullets (an easier task when you've pick up the automatic or machine gun), spinning him around in an incredible pirouette of death before he finally spills. A fun and quick game for those looking for aiming practice in a story environment.

Zeitgeist is a 3D rail shooter in which the player controls a futuristic fighter jet flying through space. The lone hero must battle multiple waves of aliens and asteroids, fly across planets and inside space stations, as well as combat large mother ships and other boss enemies. The game only allows limited movement of the jet, prompting the player to focus on targeting and destroying as much as he can on his path. The jet that has two main weapons, and a laser sub-weapon that homes into targets. Unlike most other shooters, this game does not have any power-ups. It's similar to Rebel Assault except with more freedom of movement. You control a spaceship from a third-person perspective, shooting everything in sight. The game's highlights are the excellent ship designs and great graphics, which features texture mapping, Gouraud shading, translucency, and other effects. The levels are also very well-designed-you will fly through an asteroid field in space, dogfight enemy ships inside a huge space station, and deal with gigantic end-level bosses that are very tough to beat.

The developer put up the beta version of Chex Quest 3 game for free download on their website (now defunct), along with a blurb about an upcoming Chex Quest 4 that was never finished. The game is complete, though, and no obvious bugs are apparent. In addition to the same wacky gameplay from the first two games, Chex Quest 3 includes new weapons, such as a clone of the super shotgun from Doom II, and several new monsters. In 2008, Charles Jacobi, a former team member of Chex Quest’s developer, Digital Cafe, completed his hobby project, Chex Quest 3. Five new maps blasting through the Chex universe plus five new flemoids and lots of great detail gives for a solid set of maps.

A-10 Cuba!, the sequel to A-10 Attack!, is a military air combat simulator featuring the Fairchild-Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II ground attack aircraft, otherwise known as the "Warthog." Like its predecessor, it is a highly realistic simulator with a fast 3D polygonal graphics engine. New features include more detailed graphics and 12 missions set in an expansive, intricate model of Cuba. Four additional multiplayer-only environments allow up to eight players to compete on a LAN. Released for both Macintosh and Windows platforms, A-10 Cuba! provides a detailed 2D cockpit with clickable buttons and switches. The Macintosh version also includes a mission editor. A wide variety of weapons are available for air-air and air-ground combat, including Sidewinder, Hellfire, Maverick and HARM missiles and free-fall, laser-guided and cluster bombs. Rockets and the Warthog's famous GAU-8 Avenger gatling gun round out the arsenal. Physics, damage and avionics are simulated in great detail, making A-10 Cuba! a challenge even for experienced flight sim enthusiasts.

Agile Warrior F-111X Black Ops Entertainment / Virgin Interactive [top]

Force needed to construct a new warplane which can be uses for multiple roles like frontal attacks or stealth operations. The result: a mixture between the YF-23's (high performance airframe), the X- 31's (thrust-vectoring maneuverability), and the F-111's (superior terrain and weapon-guidance systems). In Agile Warrior: F-111X the player pilots one of these aircraft to solve the mentioned issues in about six missions. To be successful he needs to utilize all of the aircraft's features, e.g. rockets, a radar which uncovers nearby enemies or the ability to cloak. The latter is important during the stealth missions in which the player needs to avoid hostile radars.

Air Power: Battle in the Skies is set in a fantasy world in which humanity lives on one big continent. This means there has never been naval warfare and all action concentrates on aircraft. Unfortunately the king dies without leaving a heir and four factions want to rise to power - of course this means war. At the beginning of the game the player chooses one faction and which aircraft he wants to use (basically a choice between light and heavy hunter). This is an action-oriented flight simulation with strategy elements. The goal is to get the majority of the population behind the player so he can become king. This can be achieved by conquering their cities. On an overhead map the next target settlement is chosen. Now there are three options to chose from: diplomacy (to gather the trust peacefully), besiegement or attacking. Depending on the city's importance the player has to solve several missions in optional order - the goals range from escort missions over liberating the area to destroying ground targets. Every conquered city produces reinforcements for the fleet. This is important because the fleet sets the prospect of success for diplomacy attempts and gets diminished when the player fails a mission. Another option is to attack another faction with the whole fleet - the defeated party gets eliminated.

Armageddon: Hondon Sog-euro Mirinae Software / Pantech [top]

As one of the first Korean game developers, Mirinae made a step towards realtime polygonal 3D graphics with this game based on the animated movie by Lee Hyunse. Their first product that used their own Realspace 3D engine was this space shooter tie in with a contemporary big animation project. Just like Full Metal Jacket, the game features weapons management, but also a missions tree in form of a star map. In the space flight missions, orientation can be very difficult, which is made even harder by the ugly and glutted starfield background. The flight controls are decent, but don't offer the amount of control of a Wing Commander or Conflict Freespace.

Assault Rigs Psygnosis Limited [top]

In the future, physical sports will be replaced by a violent virtual contest, where a lot of gambling and corporate cash is involved. Such is the setting for this action-packed game, where you act as a jockey for a virtual tank of massive firepower, called a Rig. Navigate through the maze-like arenas with jumps, elevators and movable blocks. Pick up power-ups to overcome other Rigs, or Gems to advance through more than 40 levels. Graphics and ambiance are inspired, it seems, by Tron, and place the player in a "wire framed" virtual environment. The focus here, though, is not racing, but rather blowing your opponent to oblivion. For that purpose the game gives the player progressively more power and versatility. Mini guns, laser cannons and heat seeking missiles are pretty much standard gear, but it also has a couple of twists of its own: feed your guns bouncing or shattering ammo rounds for added firepower, or experiment with the fly-by-wire missiles, where you remote control it to your target of preference. Shields and turrets are also at your disposal. Also, as the game progresses, you can choose different tanks (Rigs) to use in your struggle to survive the clash. The game features 3-D graphics with light sourcing and multiplayer features.

Back to Baghdad is a simulation of the air war over Iraq a few years after the end of the Gulf War, with you taking the place of a F-16 pilot in a series of "one off" missions. The game included a fairly detailed rendering of the F-16, it's cockpit and systems. The terrain engine mapped most of southern Iraq using satellite imagery, and did all of this with a software renderer.

Banzai Bug is a flight simulator with a twist – you don’t fly a plane, you fly a bug! Banzai Bug is a wise-cracking insect with an attitude that belies his small size. Banzai finds himself trapped in the exterminator’s house, and the only way to get out is to help the resident bugs in their quest to rid the home of the evil Biggies (humans). Banzai is a top-notch pilot and the only one that can destroy the Robobugs and collect the disgusting ingredients for the Stinkulator, the ultimate weapon to eradicate the Biggies. The playing screen shows Banzai from a third-person view slightly behind him in flight. There are three modes of flight: Plane Mode is regular flight mode, Helicopter Mode allows you to hover and move vertically for precise maneuvers, and Look Around Mode allows you to look around without actually moving from your current location. Each enemy has three levels of expertise, with each being quicker and more difficult to destroy than the last. The most-encountered enemy is the Robobug. These are robotic insects that the Biggie exterminator has created to patrol his house and destroy any “real” bugs. There are also Static Spitters, which are ground-based gun installations. Attack Spitters are your rival robot flying aces. The Zappers are helicopter-like machines that emit lightning bolts to fry you. They’re very difficult to destroy and are best avoided. Last, but not least, are the Biggies. These Humans can’t be destroyed, but you can drive them away. Banzai only has a few weapons at his disposal to deal with the many enemies he encounters. The basic weapon is the spitball – unlimited ammo and moderate damage, you’ll use this 95% of the time. Banzai can also acquire up to nine Buzz power-ups. These give Banzai the ability to emit a quick, powerful lightning burst that will destroy an enemy in one shot. Banzai can also Punch enemies if they are very close. The Punch is also used to perform certain tasks, like punching the box of matches to knock a match out.

This is the original release of Battlecruiser 3000AD. An updated version was released in 1998 as Battlecruiser 3000AD v2.0. In this space simulation game, the player takes the role of a Galactic Command officer and has command over a giant space ship, a Battlecruiser, and can control everything that happens on this ship. The year is 3000AD and Gammulan Empire is on its way to conquer the galaxy. This isn't seen lightly by the Galcom who sends out their best commander (the player) to stop the threatening empire. The game is mostly played from the bridge, where the player has access to all the ship's functions. There is three modes in the game: Free Flight, Advanced Campaign Mode and Xtreme Carnage Combat Simulator. The Free Flight mode lets new player explore the world and learn the game without having to fear being attacked. The Advanced Campaign Mode is dynamic and features a number of alien civilizations that influences what happens in the world. The Xtreme Carnage Combat Simulator mode allows players to train their combat performance. The game was later released as freeware.

BLAM! Machinehead Core Design / EIDOS Interactive [top]

BLAM! Machinehead is a 3D shoot-'em-up, not too dissimilar to Doom etc, whereby the player controls a character riding on a flying bomb! Equipped with a vast amount of weaponary, the basic aim of the game is to progress to the end of a level, by destroying as many objects as possible. You shoot enemies and explore the futuristic, barren wastelands and abandoned factories and such as you try to save the world. The player controls Kimberly Stride, who is a scientist. She has to save the world from bad DNA that is slowly "eating" everything away. As a player, you control the flying bomb which was designed to be a safe vehicle to be in while travelling through this infested world. The game has nice 3D graphics and a very unique mood to it that separates it from the more common shooters.

This is a single player shoot 'em up that was originally released as shareware but has since been made available as freeware. All the action in the game takes place inside a dome in cyber-space, hence the name. The player takes on the role of a trainee cyber assassin for an unnamed mega corporation. The task is to survive the eight training missions and play through the subsequent sixty-four levels. The player starts with five lives/ships and additional ones can be awarded as the score increases, power-ups left behind when enemy ships are destroyed can be collected. You will battle 7 different enemies, each with an individually tweaked AI. Although this is primarily a a shoot 'em up game there is a strategy element as the order in which the enemy ships are destroyed can be important. The game is entirely keyboard controlled, it uses the space bar to fire and the numeric keypad to steer the ship. It has an auto-targetting feature which not only locates the nearest / next enemy but points the ship towards it. There are first, second, third and overhead points of view. The game can be played full screen or in a window, it has sound effects and a soundtrack, and a high score table. It sports a very complex 3D engine for its time, patented under the name ?SuperSet? engine.

The eponymous crime syndicate practically controls the world. So the governments have no other choice than to found a task force, the United Navy, which shall take care of this problem. The player controls a member of the helicopter unit and leads operations against the Hexagon-Kartell in South America, North Africa, the Gulf of Mexico, China and the Pacific. Every mission starts with the selection of the used helicopter - the game features nine of them: Apache AH-64, Super Cobra, Hind, Sea King, Blackhawk, Belll 222, UH1, MDD 500 and the game-exclusive Witchride. The helicopters have different flight parameters and weaponry, so it is important to choose a appropriate one for every mission. The missions offer a wide variety of goals, e.g. a stealthy destruction of enemy forces, locating convoys or transporting goods. The campaign is mostly non-linear, which means failures don't necessary lead to a game over but change the parameters of the next mission or unlocks an extra mission, e.g. when failing to rescue a crashed pilot the next mission is to rescue him from an enemy camp. Additionally to the campaign there are 14 training missions available where a real-life instructor of the Federal Armed Forces (German: Bundeswehr) introduces the player to the helicopter flight. The difficulty is stepless adjustable, both in respect of the realism of the flight control and the enemy AI. The auto pilot offers a lot of possibilities, e.g. flying to all way points scarcely over the tree tops, holding the height or landing.

Yet another simulation of the yet to enter service F-22, probably the most advanced fighter of the world. As with most Novalogic games, however, the emphasis here is on action and graphics, rather than in simulating the real thing. The game offers a standard series of campaigns as well as a quick mission mode and multiplayer support for deathmatch and cooperative games using a feature similar to the "spawn" feature found on WarCraft 2. It's much more detailed in comparison to contemporary combat flight simulators like Jane's US Navy Fighters. Rule the skies in this action-packed jet fighter simulation. Nothing else looks , sounds or feels more like the real F-22. Fast and furious gameplay over the best looking 3d terrains created to date. Day and night missions include desert, jungle, mountain and coastline landscapes. MULTIPLAYER via network modem or serial connect. Multi-Panning camera modes allow players to view the action at every angle. One of the best examples of a game that sank without a trace in the market due to misleading marketing, F-22 Raptor is another of Novalogic's "sim-lite" entries, similar to the famous Comanche series. It's a very enjoyable arcade-style sim that offers excellent multiplayer option.

A shareware, WWII-themed flight simulator with combat that tries to capture the "spirit and feeling of real flight" while avoiding the complexities of other flight sims. The game, while having only one type of fighter-plane to pilot, offers the beginner several flight-training tutorials, regarding airplane controls, view control, take-off, landing, bomb runs and dogfighting. The main part of the 'Flight Action' are the individual scenarios that, very unpretentiously, drop you right into the action of attacking ground forces, naval fleets or convoys, fighting enemy bombers, participating in air-races where you have to guide your plane through gates in low-level flight, or rounds of 'survival-style' dogfighting. The game also allows the player to record his actions, view demos and review his own recordings from the main menu. In-game, the program offers a range of additional instructions regarding flight-basics, the cockpit controls and, uniquely, a guide to stereo-vision by means of either mock-up 'glasses' that separate your vision, or by using a reflecting stereoscope. Both methods rely on the game's option to split the screen to allow for said stereovision effect. Graphics are very simple, since the game offers no textures, but flat-shaded polygonal model of planes, ships, buildings, trucks with different colored, animated flat 'particels' making up the explosions. The airplane's cockpit is fully modelled, allowing for 360° view and mouse interaction. There is digital sound of engines and 'takatakataka' machine-guns and bombs.

Flying Corps is a 1996 World War I flight simulator developed by Rowan Software and published by Empire Interactive. It was one of the most popular flight simulators of its time due to its accurate flight models and graphics, and also the novelty factor of a First World War dog fight simulator. Flying Corps is one of the few flight simulators to have dealt with the First World War - Red Baron, Knights of the Sky and the more arcade-oriented Wings have attempted to do the same, but most companies focus on modern air combat and World War II (usually the Battle of Britain). The game is split in four campaigns: The Flying Circus (1917), Battle of Cambrai 1917, Spring Offensive (1918) and Hat In The Ring (1918). Several airplanes are available, including the Sopwith Camel, the Nieuport 28 and the Fokker Dr.I.

Giants Of Steel Ulrich Haar / DIGITAL Nightmares [top]

This is a fun 3D giant robot action game from a small Germany-based developer who released the game into the public domain after selling it for a number of months as shareware. Although the player does take command of a Mech, this game is more akin to an arcade shoot'em up that to a real Mech simulation since there appears to be no support for giving commands to other allied mechs (or the existence of other allied mechs for that matter). The game uses a 3D engine which allows looking in all directions and uses simple shading to render the objects (no texture mapping or lighting effects). The game offers two modes of play, "1 Player" mode in which the player has to complete missions and is pitted against the computer, and a one on one "2 Player" mode. In this (the second) mode the screen is divided in half and the speed of the game drops dramatically. The difficulty is not too high but it is easy to get in a crossfire between a mech, a helicopter and a patrol boat, overheat and get blown to pieces if not careful. It is also quite fun if you're not a graphics freak and can cope with the relatively dull scenery. There are a variety of enemies to combat, tanks, helicopters, boats and Mechs among others, the enemy Mechs being the only real threat.

HIND: The Russian Combat Helicopter Simulation Digital Integration Ltd. / Interactive Magic Ltd. [top]

Hind is a simulation of the Soviet Mi-24 helicopter (codenamed "Hind" by NATO and nicknamed "Flying Tank" by Soviet troops), and the followup to Apache. It features the most of the same options, including the ability to change between realistic or more arcade-ish controls by reducing roll, adding unlimited ammo or make the Hind indestructible. Gameplay was changed to fit the differences between the fast and maneuverable Apache and the slow and rock-solid Hind - Instead of relying on speed, Hind pilots must be prepared to take all openings possible to attack and focus on avoiding missile fire (as the hull can take machine gun and even cannon rounds happily). Several viewpoints are available, from pilot or gunner to several external views. There are three campaigns, Kazakhstan (where you face a similarly-equipped enemy, pro-independence rebels), Afghanistan (the Mujaheddin, mostly foot soldiers armed with machine guns, rockets and the odd AAA but in a very hilly terrain) and Korea, where you can skirmish against American equipment. Campaign missions range from fixed target destruction (such as a bunker or a fuel depot), troop deployment (or evacuation), attack enemy positions or even lasing a target for the MiGs. There are day, night and foggy missions, where you have to rely just on instruments for navigation, making pre-mission planning (you can edit the flight plan to include more waypoints, or move them to go round or over a mountain, for instance) more important. Each campaign include 10 scenarios that can be played by their own, along several training missions (which are crucial to get the most of the helicopter). Netplay is included, and given the similarities between Hind and Apache, owners of each game can go head to head together.

The sequel to U.S. Navy Fighters, ATF was the first game made by Jane's Combat Simulations (part of EA). The game used the same engine as USNF, with updated aircraft shapes and terrain. Every aircraft from USNF was kept, with lots of new planes and some new weapons. One of the new features was a comprehensive Jane's research suite on all the game's aircraft, weapons, vehicles, ships, etc. There are 2 full campaigns, lots of single missions, an in-game mission creator, and a quick mission creator. Replay value was further increased by Duosoft's toolkit, which allowed players to greatly modify the game with custom add-on libraries. The game focus is on futuristic aircraft and campaigns, with many of the flyable aircraft still in development at the time of the game's development. Flyable aircraft were: F-117 Nighthawk (Stealth Fighter), F-22 Rapter, XF-29 FSW, XF-31 EFM, ASTOVL (JSF), B-2 Spirit (probably the first and only game with a flyable B-2), and Rafale C. NATO Fighters added for campaigns the EF-2000 Eurofighter, Saab Gripen, Su-35 Flanker, and F-16C Fighting Falcon, and made every aircraft in the game flyable in missions. The campaigns were Egypt 1998 and Vladivostok Russia 2002, with another map of France. Multiplayer Cooperative or Competitive dogfighting with up to 8 people on a network, or two player via a modem. Jane's All the Worlds Aircraft multimedia reference guide - packed with photos, technical specs, and over 30 minutes of rare, in-flight footage. Enhanced effects include new explosions, enhanced terrain, and over 90 distinct shapes for damaged aircraft - watch enemy airplanes lose wings and break in half.

These missions complement a campaign set in the Baltics and deal with the political (and therefore military) fallout from Estonian independence. Campaign missions manage to put you in all four airplanes for missions running the entire gamut of modern air combat. Jane's participation is notable in fleshing out the politics behind all this action, offering a deep military and political context for the progression of events. The numerous fixes made to the ATF engine since its release have also been included in NATO Fighters. Longbow Gold came out in March 1997, and is a compilation pack of the AH-64D Longbow and Flash Point: Korea add-on. It is also fully patched and updated to include a Windows executable, so you are no longer limited to MS-DOS use. Also included is the 3DFX update, which converts the whole sim to Glide mode.

Flashpoint: Korea is more than just an expansion pack for AH-64D Longbow! It adds 100 more missions, the ability to sit in the gunner/weapons station, a new campaign in the hypothetical Second Korean War, plenty of bug fixes, improved wingman command, and more! You can now use the camera unit on the front of the Apache's nose. Various avionics upgrades have been added to make them the most realistic yet, as well as weapon recoil, more weapon options, and even more realistic rotor physics. The AI wingman has been made better, with additional commands not seen in the original game. In fact, the whole game has been revised and tweaked, making it the most satisfying combat helicopter experience of its time.

Krazy Ivan Tantalus Ent. / Psygnosis [top]

You control a nutty Russian guy encased in a 40-ton, armed-to-the-teeth robot in a battle to save the Earth from aliens. Krazy Ivan has taken the mech suite theme and altered it slightly. Instead of fighting in open terrain against an army of mechs, you're placed in an arena for single combat, which makes it something of a mech brawler. In between the combat arenas, you get harassed by other war machines en route to your next battle. Once all the enemies in each stage have been vanquished, you destroy the enemy generator and free the sector. The game is incredibly well animated, and every stage is half blanketed in fog, which initially looks cool, but really only serves to hide the graphics limitations. And while the stages are set all over the world, they're all laid out relatively the same. The one-player mode is easily beat in just a few hours, but the two-player mode can be very entertaining. In the end, Krazy Ivan is a good, solid game. It's just a little too short.

Thanks to cool visual effects like the Thermal Sensors and an amazing particle physics system, laser blasts and missile trails really add to the overall realism. It also has all new AI, an amazing network play system that allows players to host their own multiplayer games over the Internet. There's 50 missions covering numerous worlds, including missions pertaining to the Clan invasion. Mercenaries also features MercNet (a redesign of NetMech) for multiplayer. A special 3DFX Edition was also released.

With NetMech you can now have up to eight MechWarriors battle for ultimate domination. You can play via IPX, null modem, modem or Dwango. The package includes more than 12 multiplayer maps. Originally, MechWarrior 2 was to have shipped with multi-player capabilities via a program called NetMech. Development of this application was behind schedule and was not shipped until about eight months after MechWarrior 2 was released. NetMech was made available to the public via a free download or in a low-cost boxed CD-ROM set. The add-on featured various types of gameplay, with support for up to eight players. Later versions of MechWarrior 2 included NetMech. Many copies of the MechWarrior 2 and NetMech CDs came with an online gaming client known as Kali. Kali allowed games that supported only the IPX protocol to communicate over TCP/IP, the protocol used by the then-emerging Internet. Players using Kali had two major leagues/ladders to choose from: the Grand Council (GC) or the Killing Zone League (TKZ). Both offered scenario-based battles with TKZ offering more of a strategist's view of the overall concept[citation needed]. After a year or so, Mplayer.com introduced chat/multiplayer with tcp/ip capabilities. Leagues formed on these client, such as MechWarrior League (MWL) and Planet War League (PWL). The Planet War League offered clans the ability to fight for planets in a drawn up universe.

Metal Rage is a lackluster 3D shooter from Titus. It remains probably Titus' least known game, but you will discover why very soon after you start playing: this is a sub-par game that is not fun to play, let alone introducing anything new. You basically go through poorly designed levels, shooting anything that moves, then find the exit to do the same thing all over again. The city levels are semi-interesting and look half decent in SVGA, but their dull, repetitive design cannot capture even 1/10th of my interest compared to Bethesda's oldie The Terminator.

The premise of Nihilist is simple: The player controls a spaceship which has to beat deathmatches in an arena called Kraal. The gameplay is a mix between the classic games Beamrider and Star Wars. In Beamrider the player is on the bottom of a grid and shoots enemies on the upper part. Star Wars had among other things a sequence were the player flies in pseudo 3D through the Death Star. In the 25 levels the player duels one enemy each. Additionally there are other ships which shoot both opponents and asteroids which either split when shot or give extras like better armor. There are three arenas: horizontal, vertical and spherical. Every fight costs credits so the player has to pick up money symbols during the fight. When having more money he can spend it on weapon and armor upgrades. The soundtrack features 17 songs from bands like Dog eat Dog, Pop will eat itself and Sugar Ray and can be replaced with another music CD.

This cool 3D space shooter is formerly a commercial game, but the source code and later the data files were released into the public domain in 2005. Similar to Wing Commander, you control a spaceship from the first-person perspective. Your job is to accomplish missions, with diverse objectives ranging from destroying enemy ships or base, escorting allied ships, clearing the mine field, etc. In some missions, you are accompanied by wingmen, whom you can control by giving them basic orders such as "attack enemy," "retreat," "protect the base," and so on. In contrast to most arcade-based 3D space shooters, it's quite large. Each mission comprises of different sectors, each of which usually contains different objectives. When all objectives of the current sector is complete, you need to go to the nearest NAV point in order to warp to the next sector. Once you complete all objectives in all the sectors (i.e. once a mission is complete), a warp gate appears to take you to the next mission. The game contains 5 episodes, each of which contains 10 missions. The graphics are more than adequate, the controls easy to use, and the action is nonstop, with plenty of enemy types.

You are Ser Lev Arris in this "sequel" to the original Privateer. Go on a search to regain your identity and memory in this interactive movie/space combat game. Along the way, you can trade commodities, go on missions, attack strange mutants, rescue damsels in distress, meet weird characters, and visit unusual planets. You can hire wingmen and cargo ships, upgrade your ship or buy new ones, and watch lots of live-action movies. It stars Clive Owen, John Hurt, Jürgen Prochnow (of Das Boot and the Wing Commander movie), David Warner, Amanda Pays, Mathilda May, David McCallum, Brian Blessed, and Christopher Walken as Hassan. The adventure element played a bigger role and expanded on the adventure portion of the first (and featured FMV sequences with all sorts of famous actors) and placed a bit more emphasis on story and how your interactions during the adventure game mode on planets played out. In fact, if you wanted to continue the story, you had to go to certain planets and meet contacts and acquire information.

In this Mech shooter, a post-apocalyptic planet Earth in complete ruins, is controlled by greedy, superlegal corporations who have expanded into the surrounding solar systems to strip mine them and to feed their voracious appetite for power. Strangely belligerent aliens react none too kindly to the territorial infringements of human colonists and massacre them, prompting the corporations to hire warriors with really big, noisy guns to do the dirty work. You take the role of a mercenary planet runner, pilot of a vehicle by the same name. The small models look something like a charging, fire-breathing ostridge all wrapped in aluminum foil. Your job is to fly around enemy-held areas in your corvette spacecraft, protect the life of the fragile settlers, blow up the big, bad, indiginous critters, and protect the corporation's investments. With 11 different planet runner chassis, over 25 weapons in either primary or secondary configuraitons, different kinds of power plants and shield generators to choose from, and the ability to vary power outputs to different parts of your machine on the fly, the planet runner supports a performance envelope any pilot can like. It has some nice graphics, enriching sound effects, not to mention above average background music. It is more of an action-oriented sim than MechWarrior especially the early levels are unreleting shoot-em ups but the missions become a little more interesting and absorbing as you advance through the levels.

Da Wardenz, an anti-terrorist tank force, is called in whenever there is trouble somewhere in the world. You are a rookie hired by the tank force and must prove yourself in 25 increasingly difficult missions.
'The Pen' is Da Wardenz' headquarters. It has all sorts of locations including the main hangar, basketball court, simulation room, workshop area, briefing room and various lockers (used for loading and saving missions). Before a mission, you can explore the headquarters and interact with each member of the team; you may learn something.
When you start a mission, the action is viewed from a first-person perspective. It has you controlling the M-13 Predator, a highly sophisticated and upgradable tank. The game is arcade-oriented and has much more in common with 'Quarantine' and 'Doom' than serious counterparts like 'M1 Tank Platoon'. Your tank has unlimited bullets, can sustain heavy damage and can destroy enemies but also trees and buildings.
When a mission is successfully completed you earn cash which you can spend on repairing your tank and extra upgrades.

Silent Thunder: A-10 Tank Killer II is a flight simulation computer game and the sequel to A-10 Tank Killer, which was directed by Frank Evers (CEO). Both games were made by Dynamix and Sierra produced Silent Thunder. It was made for Amiga and DOS platforms. In the game, the player takes the role of an American A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft pilot who fights in various campaigns across the world in order to keep the peace. The player character is Jack "Loudmouth" Haggart, a hotshot American pilot trying to make a name for himself in the U.S. Air Force. He starts off as a rookie pilot who steadily rises through the ranks with each military campaign he successfully completes. He takes orders from Commander Garrett, an unseen American officer who informs Haggart of his primary mission objectives. If Haggart completes a mission successfully, Garrett will praise Haggart for his efforts. However, if Haggart fails a mission, Garrett will lose his temper and either criticize or threaten Haggart. Battlefield intelligence is relayed to Haggart by an unnamed intelligence officer. Finally, there is Nightflight, another A-10 pilot who is a good friend of Haggart's. He plays a vital role in the first campaign of the game. There are few other Allied or enemy characters described in great detail throughout the game.

SimCopter is a light helicopter flying simulator closely related to Sim City 2000. The player is a rookie helicopter pilot that must make his living by transporting passengers and help the city authority in several tasks, including rescuing sims from fires and boat accidents, divert cars from traffic jams, aid on putting out fires and arresting criminals, controlling riots and MEDEVAC injured sims to nearby hospitals. The player starts with a basic helicopter, and by completing missions, earn money that can be used to buy larger and faster helicopters and equipment required to deal with more advanced problems (such as a water cannon to put out fires without having to fly directly over the fire and disperse a crowd, tear gas or a megaphone), as well as points to advance to the next level in career mode. The opposite also happens: if a player takes too long to solve a traffic jam, he gets penalized in points. There are two game modes: Career makes the player jump from city to city, while the Free mode allows to play on any city, as well as any city created in Sim City 2000.

Tom Clancy's SSN is a simulation of the 688i (i.e. Los Angeles-class) nuclear hunter/killer submarine. The player commands the USS Cheyenne in a limited war against China over the Spratly Islands in a 15-mission campaign where they'll perform a wide variety of missions from patrol to escort, from boomer hunt to convoy attack. The game uses a large number of video briefings and "news" reports to enhance the atmosphere both before and after the missions. During the mission, the player can see their submarine in a 3rd-person view with a rotate-able camera (only horizontally though). The player is limited to only torpedoes (no Harpoon anti-ship missiles). While VLS (vertical launch system) is included, it has no real effect in the missions. Sonar is vastly simplified, leaving the player only with command decisions such as where to turn, what depth to go to, when to shoot, when to use active sonar, when to deploy decoys, and so on. Thermal layers (large difference in water temperature, affects sonar performance) is simulated.

FedNet is now in control of the federation, and at an attempt to gain trust of the population following decades of corruption and warfare, the FedNet Space Corps were sent to the outermost planets to crush the small-time warlords still running the show there. After being "convinced" to join them in a tour of duty, he is assigned to an elite flight group with the only purpose of testing the most cutting edge technology. A remake of the original game of the same title released a few years before for the Acorn Archimedes platform, Starfighter 3000 features more detailed graphics (now all surfaces are texture-mapped and a fogging filter reduces clipping). Featuring 15 levels in 4 worlds, the player controls the Predator Mark-IV, a fighter ship capable of space and atmospheric flight. However, other than the handy boost button, the player has no control over the throttle, and must keep moving at all times. Two points of view are available: behind (better for acrobatics and general flying) and cockpit (accurate aiming and NOE flight). By picking up crystals the player is able to upgrade his craft and obtain more ammo, and by combining colours, get more powerful weapons, some also obtainable from parachute drops sent by FedNet. One of the defining features of the game is using the laser (basic weapon) to terraform the map. As the game map is composed by tiles, some with higher or lower vertexes, can be leveled by simply firing repeatedly at the same area. This allows players to strategically avoid heavy defense turrets by simply collapsing a hill, or destroy an heavier turret by simply burrowing the ground beneath it. The player starts the game with three lives, and earns one every 250k points. Losing all lives means a game over, but as there isn't a profile for each pilot (like in Tie Fighter), the game can be resumed freely from the last savegame.

The terrorist organization named Hex has placed deadly ShockWave devices worldwide. If triggered, they will cause total destruction of the ecosystem. You must lead the newly formed StrikePoint helicopter team against the forces of Hex, destroying their strongholds and defusing their tectonic threats. The game contains 10 global hotspots that you can attempt in any order you choose. Each hotspot contains its own set of missions. Some of the missions you will be sent on will involve destruction of enemy aircraft and artillery, ambushing and elimination of enemy convoys, rescuing of ally scientists, and most importantly collecting and defusing all untriggered ShockWave devices. You can choose to fly one of three different types of helicopters to accomplish your goals.

SU-27 is a deep, challenging and extremely accurate sim starring one of Russia's premiere fighters in a variety of missions setted on Crimea (just below Ukraine). Disregarding graphics and presentation, the game puts the emphasis on a very solid flying model and the possibility to create your own missions or edit the existing ones using a simple yet powerful scenario creator. Squadron Commander's Edition was a 1997 special edition/compilation of the groundbreaking air combat simulator v1.5 and its add-on mission pack which includes 150+ additional missions, plus an improved mission editor, enhanced AI, a new strategic AWACS view function, and a freeware random mission generator.

The first entry in SystemSoft's Air Combat series to be available for Windows, this is an arcade flight simulator featuring experimental and even fictional futuristic jet fighters. Contents are similar to AirCombat II, but a replay mode is not included. The package contains a 30 page manual and one CD-ROM. The opening is CG movie. The player can select any mission from 8 different type, and each type has 3 different level. Missions include air superiority, interception, bombing, attack ship, etc.. MISSION SELECT and each name of mission is same as AirCombat II. Player and wingman can select any aircraft from F-14, F-15, F-16, F/A-18, F-117, F-22, YF-23, F-4, RAFALE, TORNADO IDS, JAS39, MiG-21, MiG-29, MiG-31, Su-27. The cockpit consits of a HUD and three MFDs, the left MFD for automatic tracking camera for dogfight, the center MFD for RADAR and map, the right MFD for system status. All aircraft use same cockpit. Screen resolution is 640x480 pixels, 8bit colors. There is no dynamics as a predecessor. It seem to fly by miracle force from another universe. the shape of level flight envelope is far different from real aircraft.

In the far future, a seemingly incurable virus known as PMA struck humanity with devastating results. Eventually a cure is found based on an other-worldly element known as Glomavine which is mined by the Lynx corporation. As the game starts the Lynx corp. is exploiting the supply of Glomavine and tries to control a monopoly at the expense of everyone's lives. You are a fighter pilot who gets convinced by a Professor Rawlin to stand up and start a Robin Hood-like campaign against Lynx. Gameplay consists of earth-based Wing Commander-like space combat and you proceed through the game accomplishing missions made up of (usually) several objectives involving some level of strategic thinking. Available weapons include standard missiles, beam weapons and a deployable remote controlled tank-like probe that changes the pace of the game a little. The graphics engine uses voxel technology to render landscapes a la Comanche, and uses pre-rendered bitmaps to display enemies and objects.

Top Gun: Fire At Will Spectrum Holobyte, Inc. / MicroProse Software, Inc. [top]

This is a flight simulator based on the movie of the same name. You take the role of Maverick and must pilot your F-14 Tomcat with your RIO Merlin in the backseat through a series of missions that begin with the Top Gun School in San Diego and continue with conflict zones in Cuba, Korea and Libya. Full motion video cutscenes with live actors play between many of the game's fifty or so missions, with James Tolkan being the only actor to return from the original movie. The action begins at Top Gun School, where you will compete for the coveted Top Gun Trophy. This competition is set against a backdrop of a burgeoning global crisis, which is reflected in the urgency of your missions that escalates in importance the more you play. You will get to choose characters from the movie as your wingmen. Many FMV cut-scenes are very well done, with a convincing cast that rival their counterparts in the movie. The downside of this plot-based approach is that you need to keep important wingmen alive to play the next mission and see the plot progress, and the game doesn't offer any plot branches. The nuisance is minor, though, because the game is quite forgiving to beginners. The graphics in TGFAW was cutting-edge for its time, and still looks very good today. The missions in the grand canyon, which give you the whole view of Top Gun school, are especially fun to play. Because the game doesn't focus on realism, the virtual cockpit is virtually useless - you can't interact with it. The invisible cockpit mode is much more satisfying. Although the game isn't complex, the enemy planes behave quite reasonably: they gang up on you, trick you into an ambush, and check their airspace constantly for any enemy activity.

This is an action/simulation game built around a futuristic VTOL craft. The player maneuvers with 360 degrees of flight control through 6 unique levels. 3D weapons include fire off lock-ons, rockets, multi-fire swarmers, and plasma cannons. The player will need all of these when deadly air and ground forces surround him in desert and volcanic wastelands, castle hallways and chambers, and gothic tower airships. There are no saving or loading features. Instead, a password is presented each time a level is completed. In 2007, Incognito Entertainment remade the title as a multiplayer-only PlayStation 3 game.

Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom ORIGIN Systems, Inc. / Electronic Arts, Inc. [top]

This is a mix of interactive movie and space sim. The game has a dynamic mission tree, which means the player's behaviour will determine the next mission. The videos feature real actors, like Mark Hamill, Tom Wilson, John Rhys-Davies and Malcolm McDowell. Before the start of each mission, the space craft can be equipped with different weapons. Sometimes the mission objectives change during flight, and the player has to make decisions what he wants to do next: e.g. help out his friend or destroy an enemy fighter. The first game set after the end of the Terran-Kilrathi War, WC4 depicted a galaxy in the midst of a chaotic transition, with human civilians, Kilrathi survivors and former soldiers on both sides attempting to restabilize their lives. The game includes a large number of branching conversations in which the player must choose what response his character, Christopher Blair, will give; the choice may affect the other person's attitude toward your character, the morale of the entire crew, the player's next assignment and even the game's ending. As the man giving the orders, Blair often gets to choose what ship he will fly, what missiles it will carry, and what wingman (or wingmen) he will take with him. WC4 was also the first Wing Commander game to have "redshirt" wingmen, who had minimal character development and were not important to the plot (as opposed to the flight groups of the previous three games, which contained at most ten pilots with distinct personalities). These redshirts can be killed permanently in combat, while main-character pilots always eject unless their death is mandated by the game's plot. WC4 when released held the record for most expensive video game ever made. Dissatisfied with the blue-screened video of #3, Chris Roberts decided he wanted to build full-sized sets for the game. The end result was around $10 million dollars spent. By comparison, that's roughly what the original Star Wars cost. Creative Labs included a special double-sided DVD version of this game with their original DVD drives that included higher quality recompressed video.

This is a horizontally scrolling shoot 'em up made with Klik & Play. The Earth has been destroyed by an alien race. The last few remaining humans have fled to Mars, but have been discovered by their enemies. Their only hope is the Astro Force, who must destroy the Megadon, the being that destroyed Earth and controls all alien life in the galaxy. It has a large number of power-ups, tons of weapons, and wonderfully animated end-of-level big-boss beasts.

This is a typical shoot'em up game with powerups, hordes of really disgusting aliens and bosses. Although not very technically impressive, this game is still fun to play due to its tight control and short stages which really keep things moving. Bland graphics detract from the enjoyment a bit but this game still would be a shooter of the Space Invaders style variety if played in short bursts.

One of nine titles created by the Majorcan developer to be published in the collection "Games for your PC " from Ediciones Mago between 1996 and 1997. This is a run-and-gun platformer with 9 levels where you must shoot enemies and avoid having your energy depleted. The difficulty level is progressive, so that as we overcome phases we will find more intricately designed levels and a higher level of aggressiveness of enemy troops. Enemies include mad scientists and soldiers as well as armaments like mobile SMGs arranged on some of the roofs of the facilities which are indestructible.

The dominators are the most powerful but also most ruthless force in the universe and are determined to destroy all living beings in the universe. To put a stop to their doing, you choose between three different ships and then fly out into space. The game plays like a normal horizontal shooter. While the screen moves slowly from left to right, wave after wave of enemies enter the screen from all sides and attack the player's ship. As the player shoots his way through these hordes of fighters, bombers and other types of ships, he earns points and picks up power-ups. While the power-ups are instantly activated and give him benefits like a temporary fire power boost, the points are used between the missions to upgrade the ship a little in terms of new weapons or more health.

This is a mech action game played from a top-down perspective on a rotating playing field. The game is divided into separate missions, where the objective is to destroy certain targets using limited resources. Various tanks and other mechs are fought using evasive maneuvers and cover. Success is rewarded with funds, which can be used to equip the mech with guns, ammunition, explosives or a jetpack. An English demo was available, even though the game was never released in an English speaking country.

In this game you are overlynx, ancient inhabitant of Earth and Atlantis. Your race is a very peaceful and very wise in all Galaxy and you know how to live in harmony with nature. But on the planet Danedola some aliens by manipulating DNA created new race - humans, whose goal was simple: exterminate the overlynxes and infest the Earth. So you have to protect your lovely planet from these creatures by shooting them from your space craft. Progressing from level to level you can upgrade your vehicle with more powerful weapons. It's a beautiful and very smooth VGA shooter that boasts very high production value for a shareware game (similar to all other Webfoot games). In addition to the fun side-scrolling mayhem where you simply shoot everything in sight, Interpose features nice cartoon cut-scenes that advance the plot between levels, as well as excellent sound effects and music. The backgrounds are nicely laid out and give good illusion of depth, although the weapons and power-ups are not as creative or varied as, say, Gradius. To make up for that, though, the game contains 23 levels (albeit with 5-6 sets of scenery), so it will take even joystick vets quite some time to finish. With very smooth graphics (over 70 fps), fun cartoon cut-scenes, and all-around polish, Interpose is one of the better shareware games that every shooter fan should definitely take a look, although it's not nearly as memorable as the most popular shareware shooters such as Tyrian.

This was a free one-level demo released as a gift by the developers of Interpose. The evil scientist Atnas Sualc has constructed his own Santas and Reindeers. He's on his way to take over Santa's home at the North Pole, and misdirect all the x-mas gifts. Your mission is to stop him before he reaches his goal! It replaces enemies with evil snowmen, crazed deer, squadrons of pastry pigs and flocks of gingerbread men, as well as cunning goblins and you must avoid explosive Christmas decorations. There are different bonuses and accumulating them you can easily invest in the improvement of your ship in the shop. You can get a protective shield, missiles, bombs and additional infantry units turn it into a real killing machine.

Invaders 1978 James Eibisch [top]

This is a clone of Taito's Space Invaders made with QBasic, modeled to closely resemble the original arcade version. It was written for Peter Cooper's 1996 competition (among readers of the comp.lang.basic.misc Usenet group) to code a clone of any retro arcade classic in any version of BASIC. This game took first prize, albeit out of only four contestants. The player is at the bottom of the screen facing upwards, moving left and right to shoot the row of aliens as they move left and right. Aliens at the top of the screen are worth more points. This version has wider graphics than the original, and is a little quieter, reflecting the 'no frills' design philosophy. To make it a carbon copy, there is no high score table and keys cannot be remapped. The game was originally available through mail order, and later became freeware in 2000.

The second part of scrolling shooter Nemesis series. It differs from the first part only by improved detail and fewer enemies and weapons necessary for its application buttons. Again you are immersed in the heart of the Gamma sector, and must infiltrate the defenses of Nemesis and destroy its fleet of cyborgs and traps to prove once again that the Delta Squad ally is still able to protect outer space. Note this new episode of " Nemesis " is more like a remake of the first game without its flaws. In fact, the game is prettier, more playable. The principle remains the same, and you will again go through this vertical shoot'em up by destroying everything that comes at you, of course avoiding traps such as indestructible mines for example. Go through levels, asteroids, and boss cyborg (like the first game), and survive in different difficulty modes offered. A note at the end of level (be quick!). The levels of backup code that allows you to start further if you are stopped in progress. It seems more fun than its predecessor, more fun to play. Same music and sound effects, gameplay levels... and weapons development. Bonus to regenerate your shields, deflectors for temporary invincibility, etc. A scalable difficulty, the more you advance, the more it is intense.

One of the first "major" commercial games of Russian domestic production. Game is a top-down arcade shoot'em-up. Unlike many other arcade games, the map is actually rotating around you, with your ship remaining static. This action arcade game takes place in the not too distant future - somewhere in the third millennium, when combined humanity has seemingly abandoned their wars and start to actively colonize planets and deep space, and created League of Intergalactic States, which include both land and created colonies on other planets. However, one of the systems had a cluster of habitable planets that had a distinctive feature - they were almost completely covered by water. On these planets settled mainly desperate and hardy people who did not like the pacifist aspirations and in the end, they created their own state - Quaker Union who not only declared independence from the LIS, but declared war. To restore the power of the League on the most "native" rebel planets that are almost completely covered by water, a group of scientists made a military amphibious vehicle called the "Pike" - perhaps the most amazing weapon of this time. And to operate this machine in a planned operation "Thunderbolt", the purpose of which is the final defeat of the Quakers, will, of course, be you. There is an alternative vehicle - the helicopter "Hind", which by its combat power is inferior to "Pike", but is more maneuverable, the tactic of passing the missions while playing it is quite different. Our battle machines have available a number of weapons - machine guns, flame throwers, grenade launchers, plasma cannons, and as many as four kinds of missiles, all of which have strengths and weaknesses. Enemy forces are mainly represented by different types of vehicles - hovercraft, helicopters and fighter planes of different types - but also you have to face some types of infantry, as well as defensive towers and booby-traps. Game has two modes. In the campaign mode, you must follow the storyline consisting of missions. The objectives of these missions are usually limited to two types - either to destroy something, or something to protect; the missions themselves are mostly quite short in duration, but often complex. The second mode - random mission - is much more interesting. There is also a duel mode or multiplayer via modem, null-modem or IPX network.

Piranha D-Designs [top]

This excellent Asteroids clone has excellent graphics, good configurable controls, cute levels, an insanely vast array of monsters, weapon and speed upgrades, all sorts of bonus - what more can a person ask for? Also, the music is initially excellent. The menu and music for the first 10 levels are done with great talent by Prism / EMF, and the next 10 levels are accompanied by a great piece of digital music by Zodiak. Although the game may be too easy for joystick experts, the sheer length of the game will keep you glued for hours on end - there are 100 levels, which get increasingly more complex and varied and only a little bit repetitive. To add to the bonus, Piranha also offers a multiplayer mode where you can go head-to-head with up to 2 other players, or play with them in co-operative play.

This is a sci-fi rotation scrolling shooter game, originally on PC-88 in 1989. You control a small ship while shooting enemies and the background will rotate while your ship remains in the center of the screen. At 30 frames per second, with resolution of 240x320, it's also possible to display an enlarged 480x640 if there is room in the machine specs. In a normal round 36 surface and the boss round six sides are available. WAV E, MIDI voice production that corresponds to the game it will liven up. Keyboard other, corresponding to the analog joystick, can be subtle operation.

This is a shareware vertically-scrolling shoot 'em up game that bears a significant similarity to Raptor and Tyrian. The plot of the game puts the player into the role of an unnamed pilot who must defeat numerous opposing forces in order to rescue his bride. Ravage has typical shoot 'em up gameplay mechanics: the player's ship must be manoeuvred through each level while dodging projectiles and trying to destroy as many enemy ships and ground vehicles as possible. Based on the player's performance, successful completion of a level is awarded with an amount of credits, which can then be spent to purchase additional weapons for the ship, upgrade existing ones, or to buy an extra life. Game progress can only be saved between levels; during a level, the concept of limited "game lives" is used to allow the player to continue if the ship was shot down. In addition to the single-player mode, Ravage also has an option for a two-player co-op mode, with the two players using different control devices to steer their ships (e.g. keyboard for the first player and mouse for the second player). The game features fully customizable controls, joystick support and a digitized soundtrack.

This game was made for the NEC PowerVR Graphics Cards ONLY! Supported Chips are the PCX 1 and PCX 2, maybe the Neon 250 as well, this game won't work with any other Graphics Card out there. And that includes the PowerVR Kyro Cards as well! This game was made for the PowerVR SGL API. Since the NEC PowerVR cards are supported only on the Win9x Platform, this game is naturally intended to run those Systems as well. ReVolte is a 3D Shoot Em Up. You can control the speed and direction of your flight, in addition you can strafe, however you can't change the height you are flying at. To be able to hit enemies that are above yourself you can Pitch the nose of your ship up and down by tapping the acceleration / deceleration keys. You have standard shot and a limited amount of target seeking missiles. For it's time the game looks fairly impressive, especially the real-time shadows are top notch without any blocky-looking shadows what so ever. Even though it is a really great game to play once you get used to the control scheme, it always feels a bit like a Tech Demo for the PowerVR Cards. Installer is in Japanese, the game itself is entirely in English. You don't need the disc inserted while playing and you can use any music CD for the Soundtrack.

Roketz Bluemoon Interactive [top]

Roketz is a 360 degree scrolling shoot 'em up. It features gravity environment and thrust-and-turn gameplay similar to the likes of Thrust, Virus, and SubSpace. Selectable game modes are the usual deathmatch combat mode and a racing mode where the players have to pass given checkpoints as fast as possible. The game boasts very nice ray-traced graphics and a wide variety of weapons to choose from. The gameplay itself is simple: after equipping your "roket" with various weapons and upgrades, you are transported to a battleground where you can race the marked track for best results and/or shoot down your opponent, which can be either your friend (split screen action) or computer-controlled adversary. The winner is the last one to survive. Each battleground has different obstacles: gun turrets, pulsating force fields, etc. And of course, gravitational force constantly drags you down, so you will need both precise piloting skills and reflexes to succeed. The locations are nicely varied, although most of the action takes place in old production facilities rather than open space (making the game more challenging because you have to avoid colliding into walls and other "background" graphics). The full game is now available as freeware.

It's spiced-up a little with rendered graphics and cinematic cut scenes, but despite all that glitz, it's only a simple side-scrolling platform game. Year is 2055, energetic resources are nearly depleted. The B.A.E.R. (Bureau of Advanced Energetic Resources) had discovered the first deposit of praxillium, a new fissile element, more powerful than uranium, and not producing any nuclear Waste. After an explosion, the mining site remains silent, so the B.A.E.R. send the S.T.O.R.M to go and see what is happening. You are Andy Steale, pilot of the Submersible Tactical Operational Reconnaissance Module. The game is mainly a side-view Shoot'em up. You can use a robotic arm to pick up devices, you can send scuba divers to go in thinner passages). There is also 'interactive shooting' phases (rail-shooter with prerendered cinematic background). The game is a 3-CD set which includes about 45 min of CGI in two different resolutions, with about 12 different 3-part levels, supported by 12 original sound tracks composed by Christophe Zurfluh.

Most of the fundamentals of this game work in a similar way to Desert Strike. You pilot a helicopter or a three-barreled tank through 14 increasingly tough multi-phase missions, each of which is preceded by a full briefing and a shopping phase. Before each phase you can enter the shop and upgrade your weaponry, paying with golden medals gathered during previous phases. Your starting weapons are the chain gun and rockets/tank shells. Every weapon has three upgrade levels. After that, you can decide how much ammunition for each weapon you want to load into your vehicle's weapon bays, switch between the tank and the chopper (which can only be done between phases, and some of them don't give you the choice), choose one of the three special weapons and adjust the fuel/armor/speed characteristics. All these preparations are surprisingly complex for a shooter like this, and a bad configuration can make the game really hard (no fuel in the middle of the desert, or a paper-thin armor are just two examples). Missions are set in the desert and jungle as well as over the sea and in snowy regions. Most often your objectives are, obviously, to seek and destroy, while performing some rescue operations and gathering as much powerups as you can. The powerups consist of ammunition, fuel, medals, and others. A scanner is installed into the vehicle to guide you, as is a mapping system and a limited shield. Unusually, the game only scrolls vertically even though you have full directional movement. When you rotate the direction the ground moves underneath you, ensuring a more realistic effect and smartly mimicking motion effects.

This is the second in a series of shoot'em-ups starring a monkey. It's difficult to predict the movement and speed of enemies with different attack patterns. This time you can upgrade weapons. Time in the right corner of the screen is the retention time of the weapon upgrades. You can receive a bonus life, depending on the score obtained. Items featured: Apple - It has the usual power and a wide range of attacks. Step 3 can be upgraded; Banana - The power is weak, but there is a wide range of attack, can attack all upgrades 360 degrees; Night - power is only as strong narrow range attacks. Step 3 is also possible upgrades; Mini-City - a secondary role and will increase up to four missiles; Shields - surrounds with circular shield that prevents five attacks; Food - increase gives one the energy points of the City.

Sideline EMAG / Union Systems [top]

This is a 2D side-scrolling shooter for DOS computers, created by a Taiwanese group called EMAG (Electronic Music and Animated Graphics, also GAME backwards). EMAG was born when a group of people, some of them students in Taiwan's National Chiao Tung University, gathered together and pursued their dream of creating games. Most members had never developed games nor run a company before, so they learned by doing. SideLine was their first game but it sold poorly and soon EMAG was barely able to remain active, only supported by its later games 3DCop/ADCop and BonBon Paradise, both light gun games. Some time after the original 1996 release, it received a very limited western release in Poland. A company called Union Systems localized the game with Mirage Software publishing it. The print run was only 3000 (or possibly as little as 1500) copies. 16 years after the game was first released a Spanish online blog Retro Maniac Magazine wrote an article about the game's demo version, leaving many wondering if the game's full version would ever surface. Some months after that the Polish release was indeed found and many gamers were finally able to try the game out for the first time. In October of 2013 the game's producer Jiun-Ming "Jimmy" Hwang allowed it to be distributed as freeware.

Space Bastards Didier Dambrin [top]

This is a Space Invaders clone with raytraced graphics, lots of weapon power-ups and a two player mode. You move your spaceship at the bottom of the screen, firing missiles while dodging shots from the endless waves of aliens. The aliens move in a left to right pattern and speed up as their numbers decrease. Very slowly, the game gets more difficult as the aliens will return fire more and more. Every now and then, a UFO flies across the top of the screen, which drops a weapon power-up when you shoot it. Catch the power-up to temporary increase your fire power. A weapon bar will appear next to your score, and after a short time it will run out. After that you return to your default weapon, the slow firing missile which doesn't do that much damage. There are lots of different power-ups weapons. The green slime blobs do the least damage but are still better than your default gun. The laser beam cuts through columns of aliens like butter. With the 3-way shot and 6-way shot you can spray the aliens like bugs. The grenades explode on impact taking out the surrounding aliens. Laser grenades also explode on impact but they then shoot two laser beams side ways, taking out an entire row of aliens. The flamethrower almost works like an eraser, simply move from left to right to wipe out the enemies. And finally, there's the nuke, a rare power-up that instantly kills all aliens on screen. The longer you play, the more the aliens fire back at you, the more you really need power-ups to survive. If your weapon runs out right at the beginning of a wave of aliens, you're stuck with your standard missile weapon which can only take out one alien at a time. So you will have to find a certain rhythm to defeating the waves of aliens, making sure you always have a power-up when a new wave arrives. You can play solo or with two players, which makes the game even more frantic. If you don't have someone to play with, you can even play co-op with the computer controlling the second spaceship.

Hundreds of secret goodies hidden throughout the levels, including weapons and shields power-ups. In June, 2005 the game was made freeware.

2029, on the earth there is a hostile force to the human race. Manmade life-forms of all types have begun to rise up from deep underground. Humanity faces its greatest challenge in a unified artificial intelligence of our own making. We must unleash an untested new weapon, the "Heavy Doll" HD-01. It's a 2d action shooter with mechs. In each stage you need to destroy a certain number of stationary enemies in order to unlock the exit. You can switch between two weapons, and after several stages there is a boss and then you go to the next world. It feels much like an early SNES game, supports gamepads and fullscreen with smooth scrolling.

A Sopwith-style WWI action game, this allows to take the controls of a biplane or triplane, and fly for the English, German, Finnish, or Japanese air forces. Play against the computer or against other human opponents via a split-screen display. Do well and receive medals, ribbons, and promotions. Form alliances with other players or go it alone. Attack other planes in the air or drop bombs on enemy forces on the ground. Your objective is to destroy as much of the enemy as possible, and to defend your own forces. Originally, the game was shareware, but v1.02 of the game has now been released as freeware.

Set in the near future, this is your typical vertical shooter similar to games like Raptor and Xenon. The earth is being invaded by a bunch of aliens called "Visitors" and it's up to you to stop them. Players will be able to choose from 5 different ship types. Each of them have different abilities and weakness. It boasts a number of features like 70FPS of animation, multi-layered parallax scrolling, rendered graphics, mecha style sprite designs and a bounty of power-ups in this Japanese anime-styled universe.

Wingstar Interactivision A/S [top]

This is a relatively obscure vertical shooter from a small Denmark-based developer of action and flight sims with roots in ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64. The plot in this sci-fi shooter is straightforward: sentenced for crimes against the empire, you are forced to become the empire's frontline warrior in its quest to conquer new planets. It plays like dozens other shooters that we are all familiar with. Shoot everything in sight, upgrade to new weapons, kill the big bad boss to go to the next level, etc. While definitely not a classic that Raptor or Tyrian was, this stands above the average shooter with over 50 weapons you can acquire, excellent sounds and music, and outstanding ship and background design, down to little insignia details on enemy ships. With 5 different skill levels, it should keep every shooter fan glued to the screen for hours on end.

ZugyA Sprite [top]

This is another excellent freeware shooter from one of Japan's oldest freeware developing team who was behind Vampire, a great Castlevania clone. Although the game's graphics are not as sharp as GunViper or Amanagi, ZugyA has plenty of innovative features to set it apart from the crowd. Your goal in the game is to destroy space stations in each level within a strict time limit. But the stations are not huge spacelab-style targets, but are collections of small modules that are interconnected. Each module is different: turret modules, for example, will launch missiles at you, while airlock modules will launch enemy vessels. You have to therefore destroy all these "defense" modules before you are able to destroy the "headquarter" module that is key to winning the level. The game is a lot of fun to play. In contrast to most vertical shooters where the enemies come at you from the top of the screen, you can fly anywhere in ZugyA with 6 degrees of freedom. There are also nice training courses to familiarize you with gameplay mechanics, as well as excellent afterburner effects. Another nice touch is how the game forces you to charge your shield before you can use it, so there is a small but important strategic element of deciding whether to use the stored-up plasma energy on the mega-shield, or on your laser. (A bit like Wing Commander, so to speak). You must be careful not to destroy the "headquarter" module too quickly, though, because doing that will destroy all the modules on the level, denying you the chance of collecting bonus items until the next level. So it is always a good idea to make the "headquarter" module the last item on your target list. On the downside, the gameplay gets a bit repetitive due to the lack of variety in station modules or enemy ships. Every new level looks and plays much like the last one, except for the varying intensity of enemy fire. Still, the novel destroy-the-modules concept and nonstop action will keep the game enjoyable for a long while before you get bored.
