FPS Year Summary - 2001

Max Payne and was an innovative TPS about a man seeking revenge on crime bosses. It was the first game to use the "bullet-time" slowing feature so that you could see the paths of bulets to avoid them, made famous in the movie The Matrix. It was made by a Finland developer and signalled the emergence of other nations besides in Western Europe, North America, and Far East Asia as new innovators. Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis was another, this time from a Czech Republic developer. It brought about a more realistic approach to multiplayer war simulations. In fact, the game was the base for the virtual military simulator VBS1 which is used by several countries to train their soldiers. You can give your in-game squad various commands and can control many different vehicles such as trucks, helicopters, and combat planes. Red Faction was the first game to have destructable environments. The Geo-Mod engine allowed you to shoot through doors and walls in the setting of future mines on the planet Mars.

Serious Sam: The First Encounter was a surprise hit budget shooter from a Croatian developer that returned to a kind of simple run-and-gun shooting like Doom but with a colorful engine and unique enemies like screaming headless bombers that run at you. Clive Barker's Undying was a creepy horror FPS from the mind of the famous author. You can bet the monsters are scary and you can use various spells as well as traditional weapons. The Unreal engine makes a gorgeous mansion and otherworldy settings and the use of sound is particularly frightening. Aquanox is of a genre seldom done, an underwater shooter. It does provide for a unique setting where shots in liquid react differently and slower than in air. There's mercenary and army ships as well as undersea monsters to combat. The game was one of the first applications to fully use the T&L effects (transform, clipping, and lighting) which involves moving three-dimensional objects in a virtual world and converting the coordinates to a two-dimensional view, only drawing things that might be visible to the viewer, and taking light objects in a virtual scene, and calculating the resulting colour of surrounding objects as the light falls upon them. It later became standard in DirectX7.

Ghost Recon was the start of another popular Tom Clancy shooter series after Rainbow Six involving special elite forces in modern-day military missions. The tactical game has you selecting six teammates with different abilities. Return To Castle Wolfenstein was a popular return to the FPS originator mixed in with Indiana Jones territory where the Nazies are experimenting with ancient magic. You will encounter enemies such as mummies and zombies as well as more conventional war levels bove ground. You could throw objects like chairs at enemies and there was a great-looking flamethrower weapon. World War II Online was one of the first MMOFPS (Massively Multiplayer Online) games to come about. Fantasy RPGs have dominated the popular MMOs like Ultima Online, Everquest and World Of Warcraft where hundreds of players can be on one server and have to usually pay a monthly fee for the service. However MMOFPS games have appeared throughout the decade and are getting more popular especially in Far East Asia. This one had some problems at the start due to lots of demand and unforseen problems but over time the game has settled down into an engrossing experience that stood the test of time the whole decade. The levels are huge taking place over the European battleground in 1/2 scale to real life.

3D Gamemaker, The The Game Creators [top]

This allows users to make basic shooter/adventure games for Microsoft Windows. Programming and art skills are not required to develop Gamemaker games, but developers may optionally add custom media to their games using the DarkBASIC programming language. The 3D Gamemaker does not encourage one-theme game making, but encourages mixing different themes to make a game that's unique and fun to play. Its from the same people who would go on to develop FPS Creator and basically it allows you to make very simplistic 3D 3rd-person, 1st-person, Racing, and Space shooter games. It has a built in placement editor that allows the user to indicate where enemies, items, and obstacles go. This is not available in beginner mode or the lite edition. There is also, amongst other things, a simple level creator. It also includes the ability to upload your own media. It needs lots of cookies to run all of the candyfloss round and around the FPX files.

Alcatraz: Prison Escape Zombie Studios / Activision Value / Nobilis [top]

You're imprisoned for a crime you didn't commit, so you'd very much like to release yourself on your own recognizance by escaping. Alcatraz is a "first person sneaker," somewhat in the vain of Thief. Guards are not to be fought directly, but hidden from and evaded, or clipped from behind to render them unconscious. Security measures like cameras, lights, electric fences and lasers are to be avoided. You collect items, which could be useful in your escape, like tools, or luxury items to bribe other prisoners. Apparently the levels are modeled after actual prisons (the first level resembles a WWII prison camp), and you've got five of them to escape from. The game tracks your health, fatigue (used up by running) and how noticeable you are by filling up a blue bar (a la the light gem in Thief). Typically, it's all about finding objects to open doors, or to bribe other prisoners for information, with no room for a different approach or strategy. Sometimes you can't manipulate an object until a prisoner has told you about it, even if you've deduced that something must be going on in that area, which is annoying. The game has quite a lot of bugs.
The singleplayer game is mainly about stealth, as you start playing with your fists only and guns (beretta or M16) come later into the game, but it has a full multiplayer component (Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the flag, and Jailbreak). The game also uses the Lithtech Engine. And only in early 2004, it was distributed in France with Nobilis.

Aliens Vs. Predator 2 Monolith / Fox, Sierra [top]

Using the Lithtech engine already well-known from No One Lives Forever, comes the second AvP game. Like in the first game, you can choose whether you want to play Marine, Predator, or Alien missions but now in comparison to part 1 it's also possible to save at any time and the game difficulty is slightly reduced. As a Marine, I enjoyed playing AvP 2 most. The environment strongly reminds of the second Aliens film. Being part of a Marine troop, one feels safe and comfortable even though the ship landing was rough. But quickly you are seperated from the group and need to fight and survive on your own. The story continues through ingame graphic scenes. Playing as a Marine and equipped with a motion tracker and a flashlight you get a very good Alien movie feeling implemented in the game as occurred in some parts of the film, even though the story is different. Sadly, one has to fight against humans for half of the game. The Predator as an opponent only plays a minor role. In this considerable part of the game, AvP 2 looks like a usual shooter. Much of the typical alien atmosphere is given away. As Predator the only mission aim is to collect and hunt after trophies. This is done by killing humans and aliens and cutting their heads off. Because of superior technology like the cloaking device and the portable recharging unit (which can be used for weapons and also the medical supply unit), it is unlikely to get into trouble. Here again, there's cutscenes about humans along the way but no interesting information on Predators is given. Partway through, the Predator loses his arsenal when he is captured and imprisoned and from this time on the equipment has to be regained. There are some very nice passages along the Predator missions but the claustrophic feeling of the Marine missions doesn't develop. Playing the facehugger Alien one has to look for victims who are alone. If this is acomplished one is surrounded onscreen by red and after some clicks with the fire button, the teeth of the chestbuster work their way through the body of the victim (breaking through the ribs) into the open. From this time on, one has to hide from humans and needs to find suitable cat-food to become a drone. Now the slaughter begins...with claws, tail and teeth your enemies can be killed. Each bite restores and gives back life energy and a head bite restores most energy. It's possible to run along walls and ceilings and very often one has to look for ventilation shafts which arent easy to find! Also cutscenes with humans are implemented again in playing the Alien missions. Part of the time, one is disarmed. In the end you are also fighting against Predators. For me AvP 2 was only of average fun to play. I played through all missions to complete them, like a real shooter fan does. It's quite certain when i find some spare time (in long winter evenings) that I'll play the Marine missions again.

Axis / Axis Arena Jamie System / Real Networks [top]

This popular Korean shooter offers anime-style robots controlled by humans fighting in zero gravity arenas in space and exotic locales. First you customize how you want your robot to look then go through 22 different arenas in single player mode. Around the arena are shields, ammunition and power-ups such as cloaking devices and damage amplifiers. You use your boosters to fly around. There are 10 multiplayer modes and you can play through RealArcade. The graphics are pretty nice and the game offers some different gameplay than other FPS games.

BackTrack JV Games / Telegames [top]

This is first FPS for Game Boy Advance and an enhanced version is available for WinPC. An informant, Kilantrainia, - or "Bob" for short - has traveled 400 light years to warn Earth about the impending danger. Domingoaniax, an alien leader, and his army of mutants and robot soldiers have taken control of the BSBODSOM project (Build Secret Base on Dark Side of Moon). For months these aliens have been abducting humans and assimilating them into an army of droids that can be used by Domingoaniax to overwhelm Earth and plunder its natural resources. As our last hope, you must help Jim Track infiltrate the base and succeed where many others before him have failed. You must destroy every alien or assimilated human you encounter, port back as many unassimilated humans from the pods as possible, and then trigger the self-destruct sequence to terminate the moon base and the remaining aliens. Piece of cake mission until you realize that the only way in just happens to be the only way out. There's twelve challenging levels to infiltrate, nine unique and devastating weapons, and hundreds of items to find and use. You can access BSBODSM computers for information as well.

Battlecruiser Millenium 3000AD, Inc. [top]

Battlecruiser Millennium is a genre mix between space simulation, economic simulation and first person shooter. The basic idea of the game is to give the player the freedom to explore the big game world on his own without guiding him in any way - and this includes learning the game mechanics as tutorials are neither in-game nor in the manual but as HTML-files on the disc. The traveling with the spaceship is a complex simulation with around 120 key commands. Because there is no time compression available the player should prepare himself to watch the autopilot for 30-60 minutes while going from one place to another. Sometimes the player gets attacked by pirates which he has to fight. When reaching a friendly space station the player disembarks and talks to NPCs (through menus). Earning money can be accomplished by trading goods between stations. Another possible way to spend the time is to land on planets. There the player wanders around and shoots people in first person perspective. There are also multiple vehicles, including flying ones, he can use. Besides the roaming mode there are also single scenarios and a campaign. The player can choose between 12 races, 13 fields of expertise (e.g. diplomacy or shooter) and six careers which roughly represent the aspects of the game, e.g. ship commander or foot soldier.

CIA Operative: Solo Missions Trainwreck Studios / ValuSoft [top]

As Jack Noel, an elite gunman for the U. S. Central Intelligence Agency, you track down and take out terrorists, revolutionaries, mercenaries, organized crime thugs, and drug cartel operatives. Weapons at your disposal include a pistol, machine gun, and sniper rifle. The latter has a scope for zooming in on specific body parts since innocent bystanders often surround the target. The game features six levels that take you to locales such as Iraq, Colombia, and Russia among others. A full text briefing explains the particulars of each mission, including the background and targets. CIA is based on the Quake 1 engine and hasn't licensed and created a new engine for this game. During gameplay, the player will be reminded of other Wolfenstein and Doom-like games which also have been published years later than they should have. That's the same feeling you get in CIA. The graphics are outdated, the enemies behave like stupid drug dealers and terrorists - don't expect high A.I. On different continents you are going to go in shooting in an uncomplicated way. Basically, this game is a nice and aceptable spare time filler but which will be out of your memory very soon.

Clive Barker's Undying Dreamworks Interactive / Electronic Arts [top]

The author Clive Barker, known for the popular -Hellraiser- films and the -Books Of Blood- puts many story elements into this game and for this adds more honor to his perpetuation. It's based on the UT-Engine. The protagonist has contact with supernatural forces during World War One. Subsequently he is asked by a friend whose land estate is cursed, for help. Using ancient weapons and magic throughout, the player gets to the bottom of the mysteries. The levels are nicely created and the graphics present the power of the Unreal engine. Barker's cooperation is present and will be noticable in those cool shock effects. There's five horrifying boss characters, including four based on Jeremiah's dead siblings. Players will have to defeat each of the evil siblings in their individually cursed and demonic environments in order to confront the Curse of the Undying King. There's eight spells including the destructive Skull Storm, and eight weapons (each with secondary fire) including shotgun, Molotov Cocktails, Tibetan War Cannon and Scythe of The Celt. Over 24 enemies include Drinen, Howlers, Verago, Hounds of Gel'ziabar, Sleeds and Monto'-Shonoi. Special modes include the ability to fly in the spirit worlds and a spell called Scrye that allows players to see or hear events that are not apparent to the naked eye to provide back story and clues. Affecting sound is actually a vital tool to staying alive, since it may be the only indication that a creature may be near you. All the enemies have different deathscenes which aren't interruptible. Undying is a well done single player shooter. Whoever likes horror needs to play this game. Sadly the game wasnt a big hit so there will be no second part and also the promised multiplayer patch wasn't released.

Codename Outbreak (Venom) GSC Game World / Virgin Interactive [top]

Codename Outbreak (formerly called Venom) is a tactical shooter showing good improved graphics for outer areas plus complex buildings. This is realised through the licensed ZL engine. It's a team 2 player challenge game and it's possible (function key F4) to swap the player sides at anytime...if the partner hasn't died of course. Also with function keys (F5 and F8) it's possible to exchange simple orders or commands with the other player. The outer districts can be explored at day or night time which then also results in different graphical and game-play development. The story: A comet is discovered in space which heads to Earth and bursts into thousand of little fragments close to Earth's atmosphere. Those fragments morph to human kind of aliens and every Earth human getting in contact with them will become under their mental control. Because of lost contact to a laboratory which was doing research on those fragments, this hero team is sent in to solve this mystery. During missions the players will go to different places like deserts, tropical islands, Siberian swamps, aircraft carriers, rocket launcher platforms, city districs and other complex buildings. The team has the possibility to choose at every mission start their weapons, protection clothes and different personnel. When a player is chosen more often, his abilities grow and improve which has to be strategically played together with the equipment choices. Codename Outbreak offers a nice story but sadly without any real surprises. Often a level isn't finished after reaching the target position because of mission updates and changes during the storyline, and mostly the action lacks surprises. The levels are detailed and diverse and some are really nice to look at. But, the game is limited to 14 missions and 2 of them could have been played in the demo already. In skill level "normal" it's possible without big complications to solve a level within an hour and so its a relatively short gameplay. Also the outro, compared with the cool game intro, is rather disappointing but i am going to play the demo and the full Codename Outbreak by night again. In summary, I liked Codename Outbreak. It was much fun but I would have liked more missions and the game gives away some potential at some points which shouln't be.

CSP Game Engine Cyber Skunk Productions [top]

The CSP Game Engine is a single player first person perspective game engine for Win32 and DirectX 7 and higher. This project was started by a small number of PC games programming enthousiasts in the socalled Blitz Scene, the community of the famous Blitz3D compiler by Mr living Legend Mark Sibly. The time they can work on this project is limited, it's surely a fun-project of hobbiests. Due to several requests they have made the engines toolset available. An Engine License can be purchased for a symbolic amount of money. Over the years they have released several playable demos, usually containing one level each. Please note the quality and complexity of the demos increased with every new version. They are named: #2 Operation Enduring Pretzel, #3 The Secret of Manes, #4 Twilight of the Gods, #5 Broccoli Never Dies, #6 To Be Or Not To Be, #7 If It Moves - Shoot!, #8 The Spear of Destiny, #10 The Blob Conspiracy.

Deadly Dozen NFusion / Infogrames [top]

The Deadly Dozen were a special force in WW-2. Published by Infogrames, it can be found in the budget priced game corner. It takes place between 1942-1945. In the beginning of each mission, a couple of men from the whole "dozen" can be chosen (and only them) to lead. Through a briefing, you get to know the mission tasks and with that you choose your teammates carefully. They all differ in abilities like in handling heavy loaded or easily loaded weapons, sniping, sneaking, healing with medical care or setting demolition devices (blasting caps). A good healer is needed in all game skill levels, because even in easy mode the missions are quite tough and also there aren't that many medical packs. It's always possible to take over the teammates which is necessary because sometimes they have trouble in taking the correct way. The graphics aren't that spectacular but do the job properly and fast enough. This is much better compared to Vietnam 2. Also, the mission structures and game elements are quite decently done. You can use vehicles and MG nests. There are plenty of oppertune weapons and also mines to choose from. The teammates can be lead using different orders, like: "hold position", "follow", "hold fire", "fire at will" and others. I did only play 2 missions so far so keep that in mind.

Ghost Recon, Tom Clancy's Red Storm / Ubi Soft [top]

A big revolution occurs in Russia and as a member of a Western world special force team you are going to help prevent things from getting worse. During the tutorial, you get to know the basics on weapons and commands. The the first mission starts where you have to arrest a revolutionary general. You choose up to six (which is the maximum) special mates for this mission and during gameplay each man can collect additional points to improve abilities in fields of shooting, camouflage, endurance or in leading. The missions show variety in gameplay though the tutorial is odd and nothing special. In the beginning of mission 1, I had some problems but after i played and got used to its gameplay, I enjoyed Ghost Recon. Missions include: to free crashed pilots from enemie's claws (imprisonment) at night time using night vision; to support troubled Nato soldiers or set up demolition (blasting caps) devices beneath bridges; to lead an enemy convoy into traps. All make for much fun. Ghost Recon uses its own well built graphics engine but cannot convince totally in graphics of city areas and another lack is that it's quite slow. In another level, you have to protect some tanks in rainy conditions along very long ways. Within this level my 850Duron/GeForce 2GTS (640x480) jerks and got under an unacceptable 10FPS. The house images reflect in water puddles and that looks quite nice but the difference in gamespeed compared to the other levels is enormous and so the composition looks quite bad. Also the variety of gameplay and the level construction doesn't continue to the end. There's a lot of variety between level 2 and 10 but after level 10, the game fun begins to drop. From here on, the programmers seemed to run out of ideas. All the levels lack dynamic elements and developments. The preset targets don't change and there are no surpises in the storyline. Also the final level in damaged Moscow could not convince me that much. Here you realise the leck of dynamic developments most. You can clean up the preset areas (Red Square comes last) and that's it. There's no end cutscene (apart from the credits) and no commendation - a flat end i would say. Besides, 15 levels aren't that much and the game is finished relatively quickly. It's not a top-hit because of the lack of level variety and playtime. Also, the AI of the team mates is limited as well as the commands for leading them. But anyhow, whoever likes tactical shooters is going to enjoy Ghost Recon. I personally prefer Codename Outbreak but that's my personal short opinion.

Hades 2 Espaco Informatica Ltda. [top]

In this Brazilian developed FPS, it's the year 2356. The player is on Antauros, one of bases of major importance to the Universal Federation. Located on Pluto, this base has strategic importance in this solar system. The advance defence system of the Base seems to have no effect though on a surpise attack by the Grogr army when they descend with brute force on the Antauros installations. The game engine resembles that of Duke Nukem 3D but it does interestingly use image captured people as enemies (including in full body makeup to represent aliens). On September 20th, 2009 to celebrate the game's 10 year birthday, the game was released for free.

Half Life: Blue Shift Gearbox / Sierra [top]

In Blue Shift, the protagonist plays the role of a security guard called Barney Calhoun. The spectacular action starts after the teleporting experiment crashes (with Gordon Freeman known from the original Half-Life). To teleport out of the Black Mesa district together with some scientists, it's necessary to find an energy cell and to fight through familiar areas. Like in Opposing Force, in comparison to the original there are more puzzles to be solved. The high-definition packs enhance the graphical polygons and as such weapons, scientists, enemies are better looking. New weapons or enemies aren't found, so the gameplay isnt going to be that deep. Although Blue Shift is fun to play, what's the reason to release an addon which can be finished within 2 hours?...several released demos have taken longer to play through....and especially since it costs 15EURs, it's too expensive for this short gameplay. But, with this high definition pack the former games Half-Life and Opposing Force gain a great graphical improvement and its worth to play them again. So this addon isn't that bad.

Half-Life: Threewave (cancelled) David "Zoid" Kirsch, Tyler McVicker / Valve [top]

This was to be a port of the 1996 Quake mod, Threewave CTF, that was originally canceled in 2001 and leaked through a hack of Valve's servers in 2003. Buried in a leaked folder called "wmods" (in a subfolder named "3wave") was a level pack for Half-Life's Deathmatch Classic containing replicas of all the official maps from the Quake Threewave mod. Threewave sees some largely cosmetic changes in the move from Quake to Half-Life - a big polygonal statue "Quad Damage" logo is replaced with Half-Life's iconic lambda, for instance - but the provenance of the core maps is unmistakable. The original mod helped popularize the standard Capture the Flag mode that's been seen in countless shooters since. But this leaked version was hopelessly broken. Trying to run it online crashed the game immediately, and even running a local version forced you to deal with missing textures and broken spawn points. That's where Valve News Network's Tyler McVicker comes in who, after apparently tracking down a complete version from a Vietnamese FTP server, worked with a programmer going by the handle PixelMiner to fix the outstanding issues making the mod unplayable. After months of work, the results of their efforts are now playable and available for download. As a game, it looks pretty dated compared to modern shooters, or even decades-old Half-Life 2 CTF mods. Still, the release is interesting as a playable bit of video game history, and it's an intriguing look at an alternate history of what multiplayer Half-Life could have looked like.

Hired Team: Trial Gold New Media Generation / Thought Guild [top]

Big criminal organizations rule in future megacities. A special police team called "Hired Team" is established to defeat this cruelty and to take on this job. The game provides different tasks in 19 single and 19 multiplayer levels which are in principle related to those of UT (deathmatch and team deathmatch). In graphics, level construction, opponent AI and sound, "Hired Team" doesn't stack up to Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament. There is also a tactical mode available which causes weapon shots to ricochet and injury to body parts has different effects (injuring the leg causes the player to slow down and also a loss of blood). HTT is not a bad game, but it was published too late and has no chance compared to other games of that time.

Legends of Might and Magic New World Computing / 3DO [top]

Might & Magic is originally based on card games and this is a role playing game which uses Lithtech's Talon engine. The developers 3DO wanted to be part of this multiplayer boom and therefore created this shooter which reminds -apart from the scenarios- clearly of CounterStrike and others of that style. During gameplay you have to fight around in the old-middle ages but the developer missed in implementing any new improvements. Besides the weapons and areas looking different, in the end the game effect is similar to CounterStrike. Free the princess - hostage like - out of a cage and guard her until you reach the coach. Also present: Kill the dragon and do it faster than the opponent's troops! Pull a sword out of a stone and use a button (this is taken from the Arthurian legend). Aid the warlords to escape (VIP copy from CounterStrike). You also find specialised tasks similar to Fortress but in a more weakened form. Some magic spells cause higher jumping, protection from lava or enable teleportation. It's a nice online shooter which offers average graphics but scores on scenarios! New ideas are hardly implemented and the levels and weapons are best in the original CounterStrike though. One really sad point: There are no Bots to test these levels offline.

Max Resistance Pie In The Sky Software [top]

To demonstrate what can be done by one person working alone with the Game Creation System, the developers let one individual create this game entirely with the GCS editor. Using artwork and 3D models from the GCS Professional Edition, this was put together in just a few weeks. While Max Resistance is not in the same league as famous 3D games with million-dollar budgets and teams of professionals, it certainly was great fun for the game designer to build, and very satisfying to have a game that will be played by hundreds of thousands of people. Max Resistance is a short game put together in a few short weeks. As you play it, consider that a GCS owner with more time to devote could make a much superior game in just about every way. Max Resistance shows both outdoor and indoor areas, and has combat and simple puzzles. However, it barely scratches the surface of what can be done.

Ominous Horizons: A Paladins Calling N'Lightning [top]

This is one of the best Christian games made so far and takes place in Mainz Germany, 1455. In this one you must find Gutenberg's first printing of the bible, which the Prince of Darkness has scattered across the world. Along the way you will run into over 10 enemy creatures from Black Knights, Ninja Assassins to Demon Dragons and Scorpions as well as plenty of bible verses. His quest is to visit several different locations throughout the world including Mesa Verde, under the Sphinx, deep inside a Scottish Castle, inside the walls of a Japanese Fortress, Stonehenge, a Mayan Temple and the Underworld and do battle. You are given three spiritual weapons to aid you; the Sword of the Spirit, the Holy Crossbow and Moses' powerful staff. Each weapon has several different ammunition types that have unique properties. Every location you will visit is home to one of the many pieces of armor the Lord has left for you. The Shield of Faith increases your defense; the Gauntlets of Peace increase your firepower, and the Boots of Justice increase your speed and jumping ability. Be sure to find all nine pieces of armor to become truly unstoppable in your quest to vanquish evil. You must also interact with in-game characters, choose to follow side-quests if you want, and collect items. The monsters are actually pretty interesting and the graphics (about the level of Quake 2) are decent.

Operation Flashpoint Addon: Between The Lines X-Media [top]

This is an unofficial add-on which adds new weapons, vehicles in three completely independent new campaigns. It's about a doctor who through adverse conditions is caught up in a guerrilla war. His peaceful life is rudely shattered by an attack by enemy soldiers who destroy his house and kill his family. After escaping from the internment camp he joins a small band of rebels and together they line up against the omnipotent enemy. A continuous story line runs through the campaigns. The aim is to defend one's territory against that of the enemy, or in a team to carry out the set tasks successfully. In the new campaigns importance is attached to including tactical considerations. The story is explained through a detailed diary and interim sequences and is accompanied by its own background music pieces. This was made by people with not a full understanding of English as there are many grammatical errors. The quality of the missions is comparable to free user-made campaigns available on the internet if not worse than some.

Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis (Poseidon: Operation Apocalypse) Bohemia Interactive / Codemasters [top]

On a fictional island set in 1985, suddenly Russian military activities have been noticed. After investigation, a renegade General is responsible for it. Luckily the western part of the world has military forces on a closely located island so that immediate actions can take effect. During later gameplay the player has to lead this organisation; fly and control tanks and helicopters. Once in-game the player is provided with a map, compass, watch, and a notebook (which contains the aforementioned briefing for reviewing). Depending on the mission the player may be required to participate in and complete a variety of tasks, from simply driving a truck or guarding bases to attacking or defending various objectives (whether on foot or while crewing a vehicle), patrols, reconnaissance and sabotage behind enemy lines (as a special forces soldier), air support (as a helicopter or fixed-wing aircraft pilot), or any combination of these and more. Once the player is given command of an AI-controlled squad, they can issue their men a large variety of orders, either via a series of menus or simply by selecting the soldiers and clicking a place in the world or the map. Besides advising them how to act (e.g., don't fire and stay low), players can order their men to fire at specific targets, move to a certain location, get in or out of vehicles, watch certain directions, man fixed weapons, and even some 'special' actions such as repairing vehicles. OFP's multiplayer features a wide variety of game modes including: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture The Flag, Domination, Demolition, Cooperative, and Capture The Island. There's enough varied action happening in this huge area. A bit frustrating is the limited chance to save the game. It's only possible to save once during the whole game! But in case of realism and motivated action, this Operation Flashpoint game is a top game. This game is the base of the virtual military simulator VBS1 which is used by several countries to train their soldiers.

Operation Flashpoint: Gold Upgrade - Red Hammer Bohemia Interactive / Codemasters [top]

Red Hammer contains a completely new campaign with 20 missions which lets the player fight for the Soviet military. With its main actor Dmitri Lukin the game gets a new face and Russian accents and cutscenes. During the course of the campaign, Lukin switches from his steadfast fight against American forces to battling his own countrymen in order to pave the way for an American take-over of the island. There are a few vehicles added, including the AH-64 Apache, BMP-2. The save game system was altered significantly, making reverting to a previous level impossible. Lukin had been a Spetsnaz in Afghanistan but was demoted to Private and shipped to the regular army for insubordination. During the course of the Red Hammer campaign he is put in command of a squad, promoted to Sergeant, drives tanks, flies helicopters and eventually gets promoted to Lieutenant and assigned back to Spetsnaz. Also included out of the box are the previously downloadable upgrades for OFP upgrades 1, 2 and 3 includes 10 new vehicles and 3 new weapons to use in 4 new single player missions and 12 mutliplayer maps, plus improvements to enemy AI and previous glitches in the game.

Paintball Heroes is a game of action and strategy. It demands the most out of your tactical skills, your ability to think quick and your critical reaction times. Start putting together your best team by researching and analysing over 50 player profiles and numerous weapons for capacity, accuracy and range. There are 5 battle arenas which include small cities, villages, forests and bunkered hills, each with 6 game modes - Arcade, Capture the Flag, Assassin, Attack and Defend, Free for All and Multiplayer over network. View and analyse statistics at the end of each game on your shooting accuracy, which weapons that seem to suit you best or indeed which team members seem to suit for improved performance. The horrible AI makes the game very easy and you don't even have a way to give your teammates commands. Simply bad.

In Police Tractical Training, the player starts as a police recruit in a police training school. As a beginner you have to get familar with the following 4 weapons: gun, shotgun, MP5 and the sniper rifle. You have to prove yourself at a shooting range, at a training survivor course where for example suddenly enemies appear during your run through the course. Also during schooting at the paper dummies you have to be careful not to injure civilians (this system should be known from other games). Sometimes you also have to act at night. The scenarios are set up with time limits and also to reach a minimum number of points. Score points are given for specific body parts but also failed hits or injuring of innocent people are counted. The player will be also trained for night action and needs to get used to the kickback of weapons and accounting for wind. A police certificate can be printed out for the virtual police school if training has been successfully passed.

Red Faction Volition / THQ [top]

Red Faction caused anticipation in the beginning because of revolutionary Geo-Mod-engine headlines, which enables the destruction of walls with heavy weapons. Standing in front of steel doors within other shooters, there's mostly no way through. But here, you can shoot with grenade launchers at walls till you are able to get through. The game takes place on Mars. Mine workers start rebelling and the player is leading this rebellion. It reminds me of the movie Total Recall but it offers a nice and ongoing story which is continued with game-engine sequences. The player can be nursed by doctors if wounded and must cross obstacles, can use vehicles and sometimes needs to bring dead bodies (in form of evidence) to a calm place. Red Faction is a graphically good game and offers interesting ideas but without further development. The game lacks intelligent enemies and long missions but offers different levels. Also, sadly there are no levels outside the mines. Some play outside on the surface but only in small canyons. So therefore, vehicles like space-gliders, jeeps and submarines cannot be taken and it would have brought tremendous fun to everyone cruising over the Martian surface. The game itself only uses the Geo-Mod-Engine a few times. I never hid corpses so I can't tell you anything of that. Red Faction offers 10 to 20 hours of fun gameplay. It's definitely not a hit game of its genre, but a solid and amusing game nevertheless. There are no puzzles however and only at the end there needs to be a bomb disarmed. But its requires fast click-speed ability (not really a problem for shooter players, no?) and a good memory.

Return To Castle Wolfenstein Gray Matter Interactive / Activision [top]

This is the return of the shooter which brought the genre to life: Wolfenstein. Again you are on your way as agent B.J.Blazkowicz. Being arrested at first but able to escape out of the dungeons of Wolfenstein, you are the number 1 top man of the Allies to fight againgst the Nazi regime. In short, this is "Wolfenstein meets Indiana Jones". After the intro of RTCW it's quite clear that this time mystical elements take a big role in gameplay. In reality Hitler shows up as a kind of evil magician, but here in RTCW the Nazis try to change the war like shown with the magical actions in Indiana Jones. After escaping from Castle Wolfenstein, one passes catacombs fighting against zombies and mummies. Normally, I am not a fan of catacombs but this time I really enjoyed it very much. The evil enemies with their dark golden shining eyes look great and also the fire-zombies are nice looking. Well done cutscenes in game graphic style are shown before the catacombs and tell the story of frightened German soldiers who try to escape from this slaughterhouse and nightmare. Also in this sequence, the despairing German soldiers fight against the evil monster hordes, which is an atmospheric bonus. But after the catacombs, "normal missions" come up. The start of the V2 revolution has to be stopped or on another mission a plane has to be stolen and informations on new weapons needs to be found. Sometimes you meet modified soldiers firing a kind of energy storms or super soldiers. Almost at the end of the game, one is returning to Castle Wolfenstein fighting 5 Nazis in a well done level and prevent Heinrich from becoming the Nazi super weapon. Only 5-10% of the story takes place in Wolfenstein and areas near it. Also, the combination of elements from Indiana Jones didn't convince me that much. Either have more supernatural elements or take it completely away, I think. But anyhow, RCTW is a well done shooter. The flamethrower with the wind moving the flame (depending on movement and turning) is great as well as the variety of constructed levels. But, I expected more from RCTW. The interaction with the surroundings is close to zero. Either you shoot things down or not. The chairs which are supposed to be throwable against enemies don't play any role (some are throwable, some not). It's believed there where some anger and dismissals from the development team along with RTCW release and I ask myself why!? This game is not showing any direction and does not deserve the huge hype it got! However, it's a short amusement which should not be missed by shooter fans! It's without innovation but with lots of game fun!

Rogue Spear: Black Thorn Red Storm / Ubi Soft [top]

Black Thorn is a standalone Rogue Spear tactical shooter expansion which includes ten new weapons, nine new campaigns (one is made up of classic Rainbow Six maps) each featuring five maps, and eight new multiplayer maps. A new custom-missions option lets you replay any of the game's maps with different mission goals (assault, lone wolf, terrorist hunt, hostage rescue, recon plus a new one called defend) against up to 50 terrorists. The plot features a mentally disturbed ex-SAS operative challenging Team Rainbow with reenactments of real-life terrorist attacks, such as the Entebbe raid and the Japanese embassy hostage crisis. It's a good pack, better than Covert Ops but not as big as Urban Operations. The release was delayed due to a mission where terrorists hijack a French airliner being removed after the real-life terror events of September 11th.

Secret Service: In Harm's Way Fun Labs / Activision [top]

Though released as a "budget" game, this is actually decent. You start in the first of 16 missions as protecting the U.S. national security advisor as suddenly the room you're in is being shot up from outside. The realistic physics in the game enable bullets to penetrate most objects; you can even blow doors off their hinges. The good graphics also make nice environments and architectire. You can issue commands to the character you're defending and in some missions teammates (whose AI is not so good) to follow you, get down, etc. There are also 24 multiplayer levels playable in 4 modes: deathmatch, team deathmatch, capture the flag, and survivor, and 16 realistically modeled weapons. Some of the missions are very tough and you will be wondering how to finish them sometimes.

Serious Sam: The First Encounter (In The Flesh) Croteam / Gathering of Developers [top]

Serious Sam is based on a self-developed engine from Croteam (in Croatia) and is focused on fast loading weapons and tough & fast player reactions. The creative developer team had in mind to release a traditional DOOM kind of shooter. The background story is an alien invasion of Earth. The Earth is nearly beaten but one fighter proved himself in battle, and is called Sam -Serious Sam-. He is sent back to Egyptian times to save the world but he arrives too late and the aliens and their alliance are there already. Headless attacking, screaming *lol* enemies turn on Sam. Also there's little, one-eyed aliens and big scorpion-like aliens. They implemented a good graphics engine which is quite fast. Animation of the enemies is worked out well with an alternating linear level design with only a few repetitions. In the beginning of the game, Sam is joking around sometimes and reminds me of Duke Nukem and is what i liked (I played that one again too). But after playing 1/3 of the game, it seems the developers ran out of ideas. Although the rooms differ, they're basically big square areas (sometimes with open places, sometimes filled with buildings). On the other hand you are entering some empty room or level and just do something unimportant and suddenly the enemies will attack from all sides. What I liked in Doom was the firing into a new building which causes enemies to search for you. This kind of detail is not implemented here. The enemies are teleported to all sides and attack which got boring after a while. Getting some help from experienced designers would have made more out of it. At the end of the game, more stronger enemies are present and also huge end bosses which are impressive. Serious Sam, although it's a pure shooter, is fun to play even with weaknesses in its design. I personally favor Kiss Psycho Circus but will play Serious Sam later on in co-op mode.

Star Trek: Voyager - Elite Force Expansion Pack: Virtual Tour RavenSoftware / Activision [top]

After the sadly short Elite Force experience, Raven software released 3/4 of a year later an addon for this cool shooter. I was excited and couldnt wait for a mission addon but what has been released? A virtual tour through the Voyager?! The same thing happened years ago with this Trek technical manual which didn't show up with such great information as expected. But it's such a shame for a brilliant 3D shooter! As a gimmick this is acceptable but sadly this is the main component in this addon - to explore the whole ship. Didn't Raven have in mind that 3D shooter fans had bought Elite Force and not only Star Trek and especially Voyager fans? For myself I'd much prefer the first-person shooting category. New dialog from the actress Jeri Ryan who plays Seven of Nine is added to missions of the original game as well as to the new levels included in this add-on package. Principally there a three new additions: 1) The virtual tour - which is coupled to some missions. Running from one end of the ship to the other, collecting information and querying people you meet and also using some computer terminals. 2) !Three! new fighting missions (shorter than the original ones). This should make everybody happy *no comment*. Quite funny though are those black-white adventures of Captain Proton. They're something different compared to all those light and effects explosions normally found in shooters - a black&white shooter!-. 3) Multiplayer. With a new specialist mode: Fighting the deathmatch with one out of six character classes with individual abilities. It makes sense in teamplay but I doubt it functions and works out for deathmatches.

Torrente / Torrente: El Juego Virtual Toys, Cinemaware / Electronic Arts Espaqa, O3 Entertainment, FX Interactivate [top]

This Spanish game is based on a local 1998 hit film. It recreates well-known places in Madrid, Marbella and Seville. You are a fascist, sexist, racist, drunk, and dirty dishonored cop who must complete missions like locating bombs, disabling a sniper in a commercial area, escorting a limousine, releasing kidnapped tourists and locating a mobster. You have an assortment of 14 weapons from knife to flamethrower. You have more or less free rein of the entire city during each of the game's roughly 60 missions, but that's where the GTA analogy ends. The cities aren't particularly complex, lacking the interesting nooks and alleys of the GTA universe. You also can't drive any vehicles. This has decent graphics and throws some humor into the missions as well with camera control for 3rd or 1st person.
Update: Wow, this was now released in North America in December of 2004 after good success in Europe. This version included Torrente Online with 4 multiplayer modes. It was an extra in the game version distributed by FX Interactivate. There are several game modes, like 'individual deadmatch' (all against all), 'team deadmatch' (teams red or yellow), the classic game mode 'capture the flag', in that two teams compete for managing a major number of flags in a certain time and the novel 'destroy the target', in which a team acts of attacker and must place and make to exploit a bomb, which in turn the defending team must deactivate. All this ambiented in 25 different stages at big level of detail and wealth of coloring. The player has to his disposition 30 personages to choose and 13 different weapons.

Tribes 2 Dynamix / Sierra [top]

This is a continuation to the first complete internet war game from 1999. It has better and improved graphics joined by weather effects and also numerous planes can be chosen. The old weapons have been mostly modified and also three new ones are added. Also, single player training levels are implemented. There are the following game modes available: Rabbit: theres only one flag and whoever gets it will be hunted by everyone. Capture and Hold: kind of domination. A place is conquered and must be defended for as long as possible. The winner are the ones who defend the place for the longest time. Capture The Flag: Carrying the opponent's flag into your own district. Siege: like Assault in Unreal Tournament. You have to overwhelm the opponent base to fulfill your mission and defeat the defending troops. Deathmatch: Everyone against each other. Bounty: similar to deathmatch but you're only allowed to hunt someone specific who has a bounty on them. Killing the wrong person causes a loss in score. The victim is hunted as long as needed and only then it's allowed to hunt the next one. Flag Hunters: Everybody is carrying a flag. If someone gets killed, it can be picked up by the opponent. The flag of the opponent needs to be brought to a central place to get points for it.
On Sep. 25, 2002 an update was released that added significant new content to the game - two original game types: Team Rabbit 2 (TR2) - is an online sport with jetpacks in which two teams of two to six players compete for possession of a single flag, and Tribes 2 Classic which adds speed and intensity, a new game variant called "Defend and Destroy", and 24 new maps. As well, 10 "classic" Tribes 1 maps were re-mastered and improved for Tribes 2, and the update addresses numerous lingering performance issues. On Oct 30/2015, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Tribes franchise, Hi-Rez Studios released the whole series as freeware.

Ultimate Paintball Challenge / Ultimate PaintBrawl 3 Cat Daddy Games / Activision Value [top]

Yay, another crappy paintball game! This one has 10 environments on which you control your team in 3 modes: capture the flag, taking neutral flags from the center of the arena back to your base, or a goal of scoring 20 hits against the opposing team. There are 12 different weapons and good performances result in prize money, which can be spent on better equipment. Not as bad as earlier paintball games but that's not saying much.

Vietnam 2: Special Assignment / Black Ops 2 Single Cell Software / ValuSoft [top]

This is a continuation to Vietnam - Black Ops, the very disappointing and short first trip (we should thank God maybe?) of Valusoft into Vietnam's jungle. This time the story reminds of the movie Apocalypse Now. The aim is to eliminate a crazy Black Op named Flak and his troops. Jungle fights take place through Vietnam and Cambodia areas. The graphics engine got much improved to Lithtech's Talon. There are 12 levels to explore. You'll visit giant stone forts, sewers, narrow valleys that represent outdoor areas, and lots and lots of tunnels in which the Vietcong have apparently hidden their nation's supply of crates. There are a few parts that take place in what might be the densest fog ever seen in a game. The horizon is literally about 4 feet in front of you, though that doesn't stop enemies 30 yards away from immediately pinpointing your position and firing at you.

Winthorp's Mansion (Tyrannizer) Viper Byte / Crystal Interactive [top]

This is a budget survival horror game from a small developer where you are a private investigator in a haunted mansion. The player starts with a 38 caliber and finds stronger weapons along the journey. You will have to find clues, solve puzzles, sword fight knights, pirates, duke it out with zombies, gargoyles, and more monsters. Obviously it can't compete against bigger budget games that it tries to imitate.

World War II Online: Blitzkrieg Cornered Rat Software / Strategy First [top]

This massively multiplayer game (which requires a monthly fee to play) takes realism to another level. The huge battlefield stretches from England to Germany (in 1/2 scale) and really was the first game to allow both foot soldiers as well as the ability to fly combat planes and vehicles. It takes place in 1940, during the height of Germany's Blitzkrieg resulting in their takeover of the Low Countries and France and you can fight for Britain, France or Germany. The damage system is realistic so you can die from one shot. Common soldiers may find themselves marching along huge stretches of plain before reaching their target, and pilots must fly over kilometers of territory in real time. Many of the major locations of France, Belgium, Holland, and Luxembourg are depicted here, from farms and small cottages, to bombed-out towns and cities. One side's total victory may take several months. There are several game worlds running simultaneously, each supporting over 1000 players at a time. On the map of Europe are several pixels representing the current world's campaign hotspots. Zooming in to this area reveals several towns, roads, rivers, and a series of flags to show which side controls the location. Some areas display a battle icon next to them, indicating that the area is under contention. Players can enter these battle zones directly, choose from a series of pre-defined missions, or create their own. Missions fall under four categories: point attack, area attack, point defense, and area defense. The game had some notorious problems when it first started but fixes have been made since. The landscapes due to their huge size don't have great graphics but players and vehicles are ok looking. It is ambitious in its scope but the casual gamer will find it too overwhelming and you have to be patient at times before you encounter action.

WW 2: Iwo Jima 3LV Games / ValuSoft [top]

This game is based on the fight between Americans and Japanese on those Pacific islands during the second World War. It starts in Tarawa Beach and ends on the hard-to-capture island of Iwo Jima. Fighting places are beaches, little villages, caves and shelters. In parts you will have support from small troops of 1 to 3 men who also can be instructed (I only did this if they blocked my way). Also, they have the stupid habit of running into oncoming fire. The graphics can be compared to Vietnam 2: Special Assignment, so they're nothing to be excited that much about. Also, this game from Valusoft is completed in not much time. I only needed 1 1/2 hours to finish the complete campaign and therefore it's not really a value based on its price.

WW 2: Normandy 3LV Games (Third Law) / ValuSoft [top]

WW2 Normandy was made on the Lithtech engine of Monolith. In the beginning of the game you jump out of a plane by parachute beyond enemy German lines. The mission is to prepare for D-Day. For this mission, heavy weapons have to be destroyed, tank troops need to be stopped, resistance troops have to be freed and much more. So far so good, but Normandy has some drawbacks. The levels are tiny and can played in 10 minutes. The missions haven't been made with much care. Sometimes only entering a room with some weapons is enough to complete it. This then counts as being destroyed although it's still intact. Levels are bordered with jerky textures and also the animation of aggressors aren4t convincing because the graphics have clipping errors and the target zones are inaccurate. After an hour, all missions are successfully played. A closer look at the installation shows much about the quality of the game. The main installation is around 300mb. The biggest part is used by music (200mb) with 80mb for the missions. I guess this explains lots, no?

X-Isle: Dinosaur Island (cancelled) Crytek Studios [top]

This was an educational demo that leveraged the technology and art of a game title X-Isle that was to be published by Ubisoft but was never finished. It educates the player about the wonderful world of dinosaurs. Leveraging the OpenGL-driven CryENGINE and the GeForce3 nfiniteFX engine to create a Jurassic Park-like environment rendered in real-time, it leverages the power of the GeForce3 to highlight the most advanced 3D, real-time graphics ever seen in educational software. Dive into the magnificent and colorful world of the age of the dinosaurs in this educational demo, and explore how these prehistoric creatures lived in harmony with their natural flora. It showcases the OpenGL-based CryENGINE technology. It's able to feature very detailed vast landscapes and even more detailed dinosaurs and have both realistically interacting together; graphics like these are only possible with the new cutting-edge features from the GeForce3 chip. The progressive mesh technology enables massive scenes with 50+ skeletal animated dinosaurs walking through at once. It features state-of-the-art technologies such as Vertex and Pixel Shaders, per-pixel lighting and volumetric shadowing in real-time, bump-mapping, detail-texturing, real-time dynamic reflection and refraction (predator) effects, hardware hierarchical skeletal animations, and many other features.

Third Person Shooters

911 Fire Rescue Sunstorm Interactive, Inc. / WizardWorks Software [top]

This is a first-person "Douser" that pits you against raging fires. You run into burning buildings with your fire hose to put out fires and rescue trapped victims. The game is set in houses and buildings, simulating smoke that blurs your vision and burns your lungs. The missions require you to find the people trapped inside. Controlled like a first-person shooter, you aim and fire your hose at flames to douse them. Searching locations is made difficult by the presence of smoke. You only have a limited amount of oxygen and you need to crouch or steer away from smoke to survive. There are different types of fire to battle: electrical fires, fires with oil and grease, special metal fires, etc. For each situation, there are different strategies to face it, with a CO² extinguisher, portable foam sprayer and different types of hoses. Sometimes, you also need to disable the electric circuits first. With truck hoses, there is an unlimited amount of water, but the others will require you use the supply carefully. You put out fires, and find and click on the body to end the level. Points are based on your speed. There are 17 missions in total and these are unlocked gradually.

Alien Infestation Horux Interactive / Xing Interactive [top]

After this simple task I had the feeling that everything would be better soon, but I was wrong... My worst nightmare started that night: hordes of Zombies and Aliens appeared from everywhere! Just like in those old B Horror-movies I had enough incentive to use my 45. Magnum. It was going to become a very busy night... Who just wants to shoot is well served here. You get a great cartoon intro, a pleasant varity of opponents, good quality of graphics as well as a quite good and consistent illuminated architecture (unfortunately the proportions of the player and his surroundings is not really perfect). Horux Interactive attached importance to details and that pays. Besides bullet holes there are some nice effects. Killed enemies dissolve slowly and leave puddles of green blood, little clouds of smoke arise etc. Aiming works reliably even on very old, slow PCs - this finally tipped the scales for winning. The behaviour of the opponents could be a little better and we missed the first person view (that might be because there was no documentation). Aye hombres, vamos a matarlos a tiros!

Alone In The Dark 4: The New Nightmare Spiral House / Atari [top]

This followup to the classic Alone In The Dark Trilogy uses nice-looking modern 3d graphics and brings the series into a present day setting also. You again play supernatural private eye Edward Carnby as well as anthropologist Aline Cedrac who are both going to Shadow Island (he to investigate a friend's death off the coast and she to aid a professor in the translation of some tablets left by a tribe of Native Americans called the Akbanis) when their plane crashlands and they end up separated. Aline's parts in the game are more puzzle-oriented and take longer than Edward Carnby's who has more action sequences. They both have a radio to communicate with each other and a flashlight to navigate the dark areas (which provides creepy effects). The static shots in past games are still there to provide cinematic angles but also hinders gameplay especially in determining if a character is aligned properly to do a task. This game being a console port also results in a few problems like in saving games you may have to redo sequences in a room that you already did before you died. There are also annoying bugs in gameplay which add to the player's frustration. For fans of the series and survival horror games in general though, it's recommended. In 2005, a film adaptation was released called Alone in the Dark by infamous director Uwe Boll. It was a direct sequel to this game but the movie has little-to-no relation to the original trilogy of games from the 1990s. The movie contains plot elements that directly contradict those in The New Nightmare.

A secret scientific experiment goes fatally wrong and has unforeseen consequences for the citizens of AquaNox. Caverns that have been concealed before by the continental slopes or have been well hidden underneath the seabottom are now collapsing and releasing horrifying monsters. It is now the 27th century and mercenaries such as 'Emerald' Dead Eye Flint ply their deadly trade among the warring forces of man and nature. Gamers take the role of Flint, taking command of a loosely aligned force of fellow mercenaries who hire themselves out to the powerful leaders of this inhospitable world. Players fight vicious battles against crazed mercenaries, mighty military forces and hideous sea monsters. The game contains more than 30 single player missions, 9 different player vessels, more than 40 different enemies and a storyline with more than 70 NPCs in a giant world. There's multiplayer options for LAN and Internet for gripping deathmatch and team-based battles. The game was one of the first applications to fully use the T&L effects by supporting the NVIDIA Geforce 3 Ti graphics accelerator. The game engine was used for months to market Nvidia's flagship GeForce 3 video card.

Atlantis The Lost Empire: Trial By Fire Zombie Studios / Disney Interactive [top]

Just what you've all been waiting for - a Disney first-person shooter. Heheh. As you would expect, there is no serious violence in this. When enemies are shot they just disappear in a warp effect. It's based on the box-office animated sci-fi film. There are two main "campaigns". Search For The Journal, which events surrounded the expedition to Iceland in order to find the journal and places the player as one of Rourke's mercenaries and must fight their way through various obstacles and enemies, which are called "The Keepers". The player remains in constant radio contact throughout the game, along with the voices of most of the actors in the movie. The "reward" for finding the Journal is a trailer of the movie, also, the player can pilot the Whitmore Wing, as seen in the movie, the aircraft Rourke's mercenaries would use in their attempts to fight off Milo's attack. The second "campaign" is Trial By Fire and takes place during the events of the movie as the player takes on the role of Milo Thatch. The game follows the movie very closely, and the player goes from finding Atlantis to defending it. It also had a multiplayer component, which featured modes like deathmatch, CTF, and air battles. It uses the LithTech engine but still manages to look dull in its uninspired levels. The 22 levels are also very easy and fast in completion. The plot is also confusing and makes leaps in logic that you would only know if you were familiar with the film. Not recommended, even for kids.
Atlantis The Lost Empire: Search For The Journal was released in 12,000,000 copies for free giveaway. The game is also the demo to the game Disneys' Atlantis: The Lost Empire - Trial by Fire, containing the first third of that game. It was available as a promotional pack-in with various products including Kellogg's cereals, Walgreen's photos, and The Emporer's New Groove DVD's.

Beach Head 2002, is a 360 degree turret shooter in a photorealistic 3D environment, once again puts players in the position of a lone soldier, now charged with defending a vital inland command post against an imminent airborne assault. With the beach invasion repulsed, players are sent to the rear for some well-deserved R&R. The enemy, however, has other plans. Mightily annoyed at having their invasion scuttled, they are determined to launch an all-out airborne assault in the rear. The rear echelon reward turns into a nightmare as the enemy begins an all-out assault on with wave after wave of paratroopers, infantry, tanks, armored cars, helicopters and gunships converging onto the battlefield. Adding to the madness is the re-introduction of the player's former drill sergeant, who's exclusive assignment is to 'inspire' and 'motivate' players once again. The game has unlimited levels with increasing difficulty.

Colobot / Ceebot Epsitec SA / Alsyd [top]

CoLoBot (Colonise With Bots) is an educational programming game with a third-person view. It includes missions on different places such as the Earth, Moon, and 7 fictional planets, many useful machines, helpful robots and angry aliens. Your mission is to use your robots for successful expeditions on other planets. You will have to search for the raw materials and energy you need in order to survive. You can build robots and machines from raw material. Your robots can be controlled directly, but it's a better idea to program them. In a simple programming language similar to C++, you can write a program for the robot that it will then perform automatically, allowing you to sit back and watch as it collects materials and fights enemies. Most of the planets you'll be visiting are crowded with primitive and insect-like lifeforms. You may be forced into fighting them if you want to stay alive. There are different versions of the game was further developed from 2003-2005: CeeBot-A – with expanded versions of Colobot's Exercises and Challenges; CeeBot-Teen – features miniaturized toy versions of Colobot's bots and buildings; CeeBot3 – an advanced environment that allows the players to create images and animations; CeeBot4 – a very wide programming course. In 2014, the source code was released and TerranovaTeam created a free remake called Colobot: Gold Edition. The original games are now freeware also.

Combat Magic Lantern / Atari Europe S.A.S.U. [top]

Loosely based on the tank portion of the Atari 2600 cart that originally came packed with the console, Combat brings tank warfare into 3D. There is both a single player mode, in which the player must advance through 30 levels, and multi-player mode, which allows deathmatch style play. Just as in the Atari 2600 game, the tanks' turrets do not turn. However, the tanks turn quicker and hover, rather than relying on treads. This allows them to slide left and right, as well as forward and back. In single player mode, the player must find the exit in each level to advance. The levels range from the simple "shoot and destroy until the exit appears" to the complicated "journey back and forth destroying the enemies required to open gates." There are also levels in which a "boss" must be defeated to advance. Multiplayer mode supports play over a LAN or the Internet. The CD-ROM also includes the GameSpy Arcade software if you wish to use it for Internet play. There's also a map editor, although it is officially unsupported. In the "Goodies" folder on the CD-ROM is the Stella Atari 2600 emulator and ROM images of both Combat and Combat Two. The latter was never commercially released, but is a prototype unearthed in 2001.

DroneZ Zetha gameZ [top]

The hackers' battles in cyberspace are visualized in this platform/action game similar to the Tron discs arcade game. With the help of a hacker, viewed as an "interference" from the real world, the player leads an intruder into enemy systems that are represented by a solid 3D environment full of protections represented by enemy characters and huge final bosses. For operating weapons and sustaining shields, the player uses ZNRG taking the form of fantastic weapons and incredible force fields. The importance of the time factor, the diversity of the situations, the never-before-seen freedom of aiming, the attack/defense balance of ZNRG, and the trickiness of the rebounds make the gameplay addictive without making it complex to learn. Action takes place in the V-Space, a virtual environment where ideal "memory locations" are perceived as platforms. Many enemies are to be faced in this environment, and the player must not always destroy them all to accomplish the task (which can be finding an exit as well as destroying a system or solve a puzzle or any of many others). A version of DroneZ was only distributed in bundle with many GeForce-based videoboards and Pentium4-based computers.

Evil Dead: Hail To The King Heavy Iron Studios / THQ [top]

Eight years after his adventures in the Army of Darkness movie, Ashley "Ash" Williams finds himself haunted by nightmares of deadites. With new girl and fellow "S-Mart" employee Jenny, Ash must return to the cabin from the original Evil Dead and confront his past. Unfortunately, Ash's evil amputated hand from Evil Dead II plays Professor Raymond Knowby's cassette tape and once again reawakens the evil in the woods. Jenny is taken, and Ash's evil twin breaks out of the mirror. Armed with his axe, his chainsaw, and his trusty "boomstick", only Ash can find the missing pages of the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis and banish the evil forever. This is a disappointing game which combined horror with some really funny moments. The game however has some mediocre graphics in the stiff characters and dull backgounds even as it uses static camera angles as well. Even the sounds are dull and shockingly Bruce Campbell's famous lines like "Come Get Some" which were ripped off for Duke Nukem come off here as boring. The combat goes on forever before enemies die and then they keep respawning. Only for die-hard fans of the film but don't expect much.

This is based on the famous sci-fi novel but borrows the visual style from The SciFi Channel's miniseries and takes place on a desert planet where the assassinated Emperor's son is trying to gain revenge and power himself while learning the planet's secrets. There are 5 missions which the lead character must accomplish as he uses such weapons as the Krys, which is good for using on enemies that are unaware, and The Voice which stuns enemies and can be used to erase their short-term memory. There are also conventional weapons such as lasers. You must keep an eye on your life level and water is very important to find. Another interesting concept was that if the player was able to stealthily sneak up on an enemy and attack him unawares, not only would he be dispatched without using any ammunition or taking any damage, but the player would also steal some of his water. The adventure elements are fairly easy but getting around enemies requires some thought and trial-and-error. The graphics are nice but there are some camera problems and talking characters look awkward. For fans of the story, it's nice to play this first fully 3D version.

From Dusk Till Dawn GameSquad / Cryo Interactive Entertainment / DreamCatcher [top]

This is based on the horror film with George Clooney and a bunch of vampires but the story in the game is totally different. The lead character from the film is on a floating prison barge waiting to be executed when vampires overrun the ship. This game is from the same maker as Alone In The Dark and The Devil Inside. It is almost totally an action game and interestingly you have quite a few other survivors on board who will follow and help you out. Sometimes you all have to defend a room together. The graphics are good except for the characters which are not very detailed. The cutscenes and dialogue don't make much sense either due to the game's storyline and script being significantly altered after the voice acting was recorded. Rather than do the voice acting all over again, Cryo simply cut and paste the voice files they already had to make them fit into the new script.

Gears War: Age of Destruction [K] JoyOn (Caiz Studio) / Sunsoft [top]

This is an obscure Korean TPS mech shooter only released in the Far East. It has full-fledged campaign missions and briefings in front of them. But all this - only a screen, and the "mission" is in fact - a maximum of training before multiplayer battles. Choose yourself a protagonist from the seven robots available - and you are allowed to change before each mission, which is unusual. Robots of different appearance, with very different weapons, and even seem to be somewhat different in their physical characteristics (firepower, speed, total health). Depending on the type of weapon the complexity of passing the same mission could be radically different; the most difficult, perhaps, is to play the girl-robot with energy shuriken that rarely hit the target, and fragile health. The screen displays two measures (indicated by English words): ammo (analogue of health) and shield (power shield). Some types of enemy weapons are capable of reducing both at the same index. Starting from the second mission (the first will have to take place exclusively with no possibility to somehow heal), there are two types of bonuses: light brown boxes to replenish ammo and blue - Shield. Ammunition for the weapons as such are endless. The robot cannot squat, but can "strafe" and - instead of jumping - take off at low altitude and hover for a while, moving in one direction or another while preserving the ability to shoot (albeit gradually lowered, and immediately run it can not - only second delay). Kill everyone who is or will be on the map - that is the only gameplay. At the beginning of the game it's like "hardcore": you confront the terrible flying creatures resembling brains with propellers (!) Attacking plasma rays flows are just focused on the body of the character and incinerate it for a few seconds, and "brush away" with themselves a ray is not very easy, but there are no first-aid kits, and even to hide, but to get the enemy shots, the possibilities really not. The solution - at least if you choose a good character - is that perhaps in the next mission, everything will be much easier, believe me. And then - even easier. And it's frustrating. Later, however, the similarity will be fighting teams that will lead the protagonists themselves, but really it's not safe. The graphics in Gears are extremely good: full 3D, bright, often surreal gamma and really beautiful maps. Imagine, for example, a giant metal structure with ramps and floors, iridescent blue, a black night sky, or narrow "streets" futuristic base, built "barracks". No less a delight are the effects - especially the explosions and fire from different types of weapons. The variety of enemies - all of them entirely robots - not so much, but still interesting, sometimes funny creatures there. Movement is nice for animated enemies, their AI is weak, but the firepower is different. To find the right tactic to choose is not so difficult, the main thing - do not stand still. It's clear that it is intended primarily for multiplayer.

Gorkamorka (cancelled) Ripcord Games [top]

This was a combat racing game based on the Warhammer 40,000 universe and was to be developed for the PC and Dreamcast but was cancelled with only a demo produced. Players can choose an Ork Mob warrior to either take control of the driver's seat or the gunner position in each vehicle with either the AI or another player taking the other seat. If a player wants to follow a specific driving strategy, it's better to take the driver's seat. Of course, if all a player wants to do is attack other cars, then the gunner position would be a better match. It has more than 20 vehicles and an equal number of courses. To make combat more interesting, there are traps set up around Gorkamorka's tracks, and location-based damage means that specific parts of a car can be targeted and blown off. As for multiplayer experience, there's support for up to 16 players. In this mode, the 16 players can drive 16 separate cars, or they can team up and use only eight cars with two people - one driving, the other shooting - per car.

House Of The Dead 2 Sega/Activision [top]

The House of The Dead 2 is a conversion of Sega's popular light gun arcade game. In this game you play the role of a detective out to stop a madman who has unleashed zombies and other horrid creatures on an Italian city. You have to kill the monsters, save people and find out the plans behind this mayhem. The game uses an auto game camera which pans around in a preset manner as you venture through the city killing the creatures and rescuing people. Extra modes like training and time trial are included for replayability. This has good graphics and is an exciting rail shooter. The same game scenes are used for a later game called Typing Of The Dead where instead of shooting, you type words and letters to succeed.

Lucky Luke is a popular character in Europe and in this game ventures into a 3D cartoony shooting game in third person view. There are 10 levels to complete in a mostly linear gameplay while solving some easy adventure elements. When combat begins, the view is similar to a light-gun shooting gallery with Lucky Luke on one side of the screen while the enemies pop up from behind items such as barrels and shoot at him. There are also end bosses. This game was made with kids in mind.

MAD: Global Thermonuclear War Small Rockets / Global Star Software Ltd. [top]

Let's play global thermonuclear war. MAD is a real time strategy game depicting a future battle between two superpower alliances. Each side is attempting to eliminate the other's cities with nuclear missiles and defend their own with orbiting weapons platforms. A player starts with a number of ground territories and loses when the last one is destroyed (there's no expansion). Each territory provides money and uranium to build weapons and can be home to a spaceport and a nuclear missile silo. In space, players build orbiting stations with science labs that allow technology advancements and anti-missile weapons that can protect the territories beneath them. Missiles are fired at the enemy with a semi-arcade control system that requires quick reflexes to be accurate. There are ten single player scenarios (which are really just different starting conditions) and an option for 1 on 1 modem or internet battles.

Max Payne (Dark Justice, Max Heat) Remedy Entertainment / Gathering of Developers [top]

A small Finnish developer team worked a couple of years on this revolutionary game. Playing in third person as Max Payne, you are seeking revenge. The story is a tough one - Max's family (wife and baby) got killed by unscrupulous delinquent criminals who are feeding the market with a new drug. The people behind it are very powerful and almighty but Max hasn't anything to lose. Followed by optically well designed nightmares, Max only knows revenge without any compromise. Max has to fight against detailed and real-looking enemies. Sadly, they all look similar; there are merely six different looking enemies. Max is supported by the Bullet Time feature, one of the new improvements to FPS gameplay that Max Payne brings. If the Bullet Time is enabled, everything (also Max) moves in slow motion but with the exception that his weapon can be handled in real time. This gives the player enormous advantages. I would say, without this mode the game isn't even beatable in easy skill mode. Why would one not use this cool game feature? Besides, the fights look quite real. After shooting, the bullets leave holes everywhere - parts of the walls fly around during heavy gunfights which give this a kind of Matrix feeling. I never got bored playing Max Payne at any time. With cool action and a storyline filled to the maximum (set up in cool comic drawings) one is fighting through the story like being addicted (under drugs). After playing through it, one directly starts in the next higher skill level. There are only little things to criticize: the linear and resulting short gameplay. But I more prefer a short game than a storyline which never seems to stop and gets boring with time. With this special Bullet Time and also with the design of the fighting actions, Max Payne sets up a standard which surely will be copied and implemented in other games and is without a doubt the best action game of the year 2001! In 2008, a loosely based movie version starring Mark Wahlberg was released to mostly poor reviews.

Mega Man Legends Capcom [top]

This was a port of a Playstation game that was released 3 years earlier. The famous Mega Man series of side-scrolling games led to this first 3d venture. He crashes on an island on a water-covered planet where he has to help a girl find her parents. Also seemingly connected, Diggers mine under the earth for energy and have a legend of a Mother Lode energy treasure. Most of the combat occurs in underground corridors and is not very satisfying. The graphics are colorful but don't seem to have been improved either. The Buster Gun amount fired depends on Buster Parts equipped of which can be upgraded four stats: Attack (how strong it is), Rapid (how fast it fires), Range (how far the shots go), and Energy (how many shots can be fired before stopping). There are NPCs to talk to and the plot is revealed through cutscenes, many of which have voice acting to accompany the text. Large gems called Refractors are used as a power source. Small shards of them can be exchanged for money, and in the game, enemies that are destroyed will often drop these Refractor Shards. Roll Caskett is able to make weapons for the player, using specific combinations of parts that can be found in dungeons or bought in shops. Many of these weapons supplement the Buster Gun, such as the Active Buster (a homing missile launcher). The only way to refill them in the field is an item that can be bought, but only one can be carried. Only one special weapon can be equipped at a time, and the only way to switch is to talk to Roll.

Mega Man Legends 2 / Rockman Dash 2 [J] Capcom Co., Ltd. / Capcom Entertainment, Inc. [top]

The gameplay in this is very similar to the one from its prequel and has a few changes. The player controls the protagonist Mega Man Volnutt in his explorations through ruins and fights against Reaverbots. The ruins, however, are from various islands in contrast to the prequel in which most ruins belonged to Kattelox Island. The player is able to travel to other islands with Roll's ship, the Flutter, although the he can only enter to certains islands by completing different missions. Unlike Mega Man Legends in which the player could enter to different ruins by having the approval of Kattelox's mayor, here the player must pass different tests in order to win Digger licenses from a specific level. The license allows Mega Man to enter into ruins which are forbidden to lower-class Diggers. Additionally, when winning a license, the Reaverbots' health is higher, but once they are destroyed, they drop more refractors' shards which are used in shops to buy items. Mega Man's interactions with other characters can also affect the character's state depending whether he is good with other people or makes them angry. Mega Man is also able to grab objects or people which help the player to complete missions. Mega Man can also suffer from special damage when fighting Reaverbots or touching fields that damage him such as lava. If the player equips Mega Man specific body part, he will become invulnerable to such states. Another addition is the underwater dungeon, in where the objects' weight is reduced and Mega Man can jump higher. The energy of the special weapons, which are developed by Roll using unusable items, are now shown in two energy bars, one green and one blue. The blue bar indicates how much energy the weapon has, while the green bar shows how much energy is consumed when the weapon is used. The pc version seems to only have been released in Japan as Rockman Dash 2.

Oni Bungie Studios / Take-Two Interactive Software [top]

This is a fun anime-style 3rd person shooter and fighting combo. The game's universe is heavily influenced by Masamune Shirow's manga series Ghost in the Shell. It features fluid, dynamic animation, some exciting combat sequences, and a fairly involving story that links everything together. Weapons include conventional pistols and submachine guns, as well as stronger plasma and beam weapons, an incredibly powerful grenade launcher, and a very deadly sniper rifle. There are a few jumping puzzles and you must find various terminals to open doors. The enemies are nicely modelled but the levels are somewhat similar and become dull. The combat system though is well done and makes for a worth-while game.

This Russian developed game is a followup to one that was popular there in 1997 called Parkan: The Imperial Chronicles and is an ambitious blend of first-person shooter, real-time strategy, and combat simulation. There are 5 campaigns in the game but you must complete one to start the next and a set of Multiplayer games (LAN/Internet gaming supported) which take place on the training ground and on five different planets of the Labyrinth. Reality is another important feature - superb futuristic landscapes, gorgeous day and night alternation and incredible weather effects. You'll get a unique opportunity to fly on terrain and inside buildings, lead a group of warbots in a battle, or give orders to your platoons from your well protected bunker. You can create warbots of different types and control them directly or remotely. Briefings are done through game-engine cutscenes and before you enter the action, your objectives are summarized on a list on the screen.

Released around the same time as the movie remake (2001 Tim Burton), it's actually based on the original novel by Pierre Boulle, the original film (1968 Franklin J. Schaffner) and the first sequel Battle Beneath The Planet Of The Apes. You are Ulysses, a human whose spacecraft crashed on an ape-ruled planet. When you are captured and readied for 'examination' you want to save your skin, and thankfully a merciful ape gives you a chance to do so. As a human you have no tools, only your intelligence and some loincloth to prevent staring eyes. The game is played from a third-person viewpoint, and you can meet certain characters and talk to them to get information. Hand-to-hand combat ensues when you encounter an unfriendly ape, obstacles need to be overcome by thinking and some acrobatics. You can also use some guns.

This sci-fi action adventure comes from the makers of the original Tomb Raider. You control four police officers investigating an equipment malfunction in the huge city that leads to further mystery. Each of the 11 huge levels leads you lower into the depths of the city. You can switch between the 4 characters and use their various strengths to accomplish certain tasks. You also have a small remote-controlled rover and flying metal ball that are fun to use and get into places the team can't reach. The puzzles are complex and are satisfying to finish and you have to explore wide areas. The combat however is very simple and unsatisfying and when a character dies they can regenerate not too far away. There are multiplayer modes as well which again are not very interesting. This is a good game though for those who enjoy a long adventure with some action thrown in.

Rage, The FluidGames [top]

This is a really cool 3D brawler in the same vein as Fighting Force. The plot of the game is that Sarah, Bruce's girlfriend, goes into a coma after she's given an experimental drug. Bruce and his friends Max and Lisa find out that she went to a bar run by mafia, who are testing this drug on people at random. The friends, along with Alfred, a long-time friend of Sarah, then decide to take on the mafia and find a cure for their friend. Up to four players can play simultaneously in the same machine or over a LAN or the Internet, selecting one of the four available characters: Max (a karateka), Alfred (a wrestler, clearly inspired in Max from Streets of Rage 2), Bruce (a metalhead with moves inspired in those of Axel, from SoR series) and Lisa, the gang's girl. You take to the streets knocking the stuffing out of all comers, and there is the usual array of disposable weapons to help your cause like a baseball bat, machine gun, rocket launcher etc. As you go, the game also offers multiple paths of progression, so you can take different routes each play. Each character has specific attributes (power, speed and technique) and moves, including a running attack (combined with a punch or a kick, depending on the character) and a superblow, which is stronger than other attacks but takes a portion of the character's life bar when used. The game is comprised of 6 stages with two or three sections each.

You play with a girl (unsurprisingly) who, after a brief introduction showing her mom and dad, goes out with a gun and blasts stuff. The game seems very simple and fairly generic...music is kinda like some hip-hop Japanese stuff...reminds of Samurai Champloo in some spots. You can jump (to help dodge bullets) and switch between different shots; you can shoot these weird homing bullets and bullets that basically fire straight, but you can strafe while shooting. It's good for sweeping the screen of enemies when the homing shot is too busy concentrating on one foe. The score counter is done in Kanji.

Take part in the Battle to save the planet Naboo, with a total of 15 land and air missions, using hovercrafts, the now famous Naboo cruiser, and all the crafts seen in the movie. Plus, cut scenes help guide the storyline, and everyones favourite music score is thrown in to add to the atmosphere of destroying the Trade Federations plans of taking over Naboo. This is a spiritual sequel to the successful Star Wars: Rogue Squadron released two years earlier but with a brand new game engine. Players control Gavyn Sykes, a Lieutenant in Naboo's Royal Security Forces. As the game progresses, Sykes and the Royal Security Forces fight the Trade Federation on Naboo or in the space immediately surrounding it. The game concludes after the player completes a mission that recreates the film's climactic assault on the Trade Federation's Droid Control Ship. The heads-up display features a health meter, a radar and an ammunition count for secondary weapons. Depending on the level, the player can control several different air, land and water vehicles. Aircraft are the Naboo Starfighter, the Naboo Bomber and Police Cruiser, while land and watercraft are the Flash and Gian speeders, the Trade Federation Gunboat and the Heavy STAP. Each vehicle offers a unique armament arrangement, as well as varying degrees of speed and maneuverability. The game initially restricts the player to a particular craft for each level; however, after the player has completed a level, he or she can replay it with any available craft that falls within its air, land or watercraft specification. Some levels offer the player the option to change craft mid-level. Seven bonus power-ups are hidden in different levels throughout the game. These bonuses improve a craft's weapons or durability and are applied to each eligible craft for the remainder of the game. The player can unlock three bonus levels: "Trade Federation Secrets", "Couruscant Encounter" and "Dark Side".

Free Fan-Made Games

Another Zero Unknown [top]

One of the most impressive freeware shooters, it's also one of the most difficult games in the genre, freeware or not. Three ships are selectable, each with different characteristics, a main weapon, and a secondary one with limited energy. The Blue Dragon, piloted by Lihide, is the most balanced between speed and firepower; its secondary weapon is an energy bolt that moves straight, destroying (almost) all the enemy shots on its path. The Yellow Snake, piloted by Fhala, is the speediest. Two invulnerable pods rotate around it and, as a secondary weapon, they can fire the same weapon as the ship, triplicating the firepower for a short time. Unfortunately, due to the rotation they can leave the ship uncovered from enemy fire in the wrong moments. IMO, it's the most difficult to use. Finally, the Red Tiger, piloted by the beast-man Viz: powerful but slow, it can protect itself from enemy shots thanks to a circular flamethrower that ensures protection from all sides. Once the choice is made, it's time to go into action. Don't think it will be a soft start: after the first waves of enemy ships, you'll meet a mini-boss already, a robotic dragon which, trust me, will make you despair the first times :b Mastering the use of the secondary weapons, made more for defense than for offense, is essential. Remember, even the most insignificant enemy can vomit a huge load of fire aimed at you! Use every pause to avoid shooting and make the secondary weapon recharge faster. Luckily, the ship is always very responsive to the controls, which is very important in a game based on quick reflexes. At first, I thought that nine lives, even replenished at the change of level, plus the frequent extra-life bonus (a big star) given by the bigger enemies, were exaggerate. It doesn't take long to realize that it's a fair amount. Though they take only half of the screen, the graphics can compete with commercial productions. There are many fine details, like the halo that surrounds the ship when you get an extra life, the transparent explosions, and the sparks left by a shot when it hits the target. Similar to some SNES games, enemies slightly pixelate when they're hit. Sadly, the game has only three levels, a common flaw of many Japanese freeware shooters. However, considering the VERY high difficulty, you won't regret the lack of more levels after a boss will savagely take all your lives in a minute. Overall, this is the perfect game for the long-time SHMUPS player. Casual players, stay away if you care for your patience.

Chromium B.S.U. Mark B. Allan [top]

The player takes the role of a cargo ship which needs to bring supplies to the front lines. But he is in danger because of all the evil aliens. Fortunately it has several smaller ships on board which are used to fight the enemies. The player controls those ships. This game is a classic horizontal shooter: the player can freely move within the automatically scrolling screen. Various enemies approach from above which have to be killed - if they reach the bottom of the screen they attack the player's ship from behind and destroy it. Energy is lost by getting hit from projectiles or touching an enemy but the latter hurts the enemy too. The player can use three weapons (one standard weapon and two special ones with limited ammo) and collect three kinds of power-ups. shield repair, damage repair and a super shield. If the player doesn't collect it he gets other rewards: bonus points (damage/shield repair) or an extra life (super shield). Another tactical possibility is suicide: it destroys all enemies on screen and preserves the ammo for the next fighter.

Desperabis [G] Florian Born 2000 [top]

Desperabis 2.0 is a 3D-Action game with adventure elements in very dark atmosphere. Master all 26 levels at different places and fight against monsters. The game is freeware for DOS, and in german. As Kiarthan, a medieval lad with an almost finished schooling in magic, you creep into a wizard's castle in order to find a mysterious crystal which is supposed to heal your lady's disease. You go through execrated gardens, dark vaults, and finally the wizard's catle. You collect objects, arrange them in your invetory, and use them at the right place to get on. Frequently, switches and levers you can open doors and activate machines with, act an important part. The permanently shown energy bar suffers from traps, beasts, and fire that you have to runaround sometimes. The second part, directly connected to the story of the first one, is clearly more orientated to action elements. You find yourself in the quest for the magician Grant, who is kept imprisoned by an evil power, and proceed through numerous levels mainly by fighting. Those take place in diversified settings that each have their high density of sanguinary creatures in common, who can be defeated by means of several weapons (sword, crossbow, dagger, trap etc).

Die Slave [J] Sexy Death Entertainment [top]

This is yet another excellent freeware shooter from Japan's rapidly growing freeware development scene. Similar to Vsys Gaiden and Amanagi, this horizontal shooter features full 3D graphics for everything from ships to asteroids and other objects in space. The game takes advantage of your 3D card, so anyone with 3D accelerator will be able to enjoy more spectacular graphics. The game already looks very good in software mode, with lots of cool weapon effects, power-ups, and appropriately scary bosses. Unlike Amanagi, Die Slave is quite difficult - if you're not a joystick expert, be prepared to spend a lot of time with this game just to get past the first 3 levels. Sometimes it can be hard to tell where the enemies are in the midst of dozens of laser rays from your ship's guns. If you enjoy shooters in general, it will keep you occupied until the next Raiden comes along.

Ocean Battle, The [J] Hiro [top]

This is a Japanese 3D dogfight simulator game that incorporates plenty of visual effects. It boasts such outstanding production value that will make you wonder why they are released as freeware instead of shareware. The game puts you behind the cockpit of a modern jet fighter, sent to complete 3 missions of increasing difficulty. It completely immerses you in its scenario. The 3D graphics in the game are exceptional: everything from the environment to ships and airplanes are lovingly modeled and rendered. The missions are fairly challenging and nicely varied (ranging from air-to-air combat to air-to-ground sortie, and finally to air-to-ship showdown against a huge battleship). Although basically an arcade game, there is enough realism to qualify it as a “light” flight simulation, including decent flight physics, airplane models, and details such as a radar that shows relative positions of enemies. In addition, it is also compatible with the joystick. The game is in Japanese, but you shouldn't have problems figuring out the controls, which are essentially this: cursor keys to move the aircraft, A & Z keys to increase and decrease speed. The arrow icon at the top of the screen is used to acquire target.

Army Men: Air Attack Aqua Pacific / The 3DO Company, Atari Europe [top]

The GPN reports a plot by the evil Tan Army to seize the Green Army's borders. Colonel Grimm expects your new Alpha Wolf Battalion to stop General Plastro's wicked invasion. Led by Captain William Blade, your mission is to pilot four helicopters (with pyrotechnic artillery) through the backyard, picnic, and beach terrain to stop the Tan in their tracks. Capture giant teddy bears, blow up sandcastles, and save Sarge from a melting by kids with a magnifying glass. This is much like Army Men: Air Tactics, except in full 3D. You must pick up any lost Army Men, or shoot down enemy helicopters and ground forces to allow you fellow troops to push forward. You start with the Huey, with the Chinook, the Super Stallion, and the Apache opening up in later levels. You can also fight it out with a friend in a multiplayer mode, or you need the help of a co-pilot, so choose carefully from the following: Hardcore, who loves homing rockets; Rawhide, another rocket lover; and Woodstock, your machine gunner. An in-game map will help guide you as you grab power-ups, mission-specific characters, or world objects with the winch cable. Drop an apple, rock, or crate on the enemy to crush them. While you're at it, use machine guns, rockets, napalm, and flares to aid your fellow soldiers in their attack against the Tan's ground and air troops.

"Innerspace"? Does the idea of (rather than travelling around the vast expanses of space) travelling around the vast inner-workings of a human body intrigue you? Well, the folks at FINarts seem to think so, hence the release of their latest action game, Bacteria.
The story of Bacteria is similar to the aforementioned movie in many ways. You've been hired by AMRTECH to pilot a miniaturized craft inside Dr. Michail Rasarow, a brilliant and important scientist who is dying of an unknown and apparently incurable disease. Your mission, as in many games or movies of this type, is the only hope the good doctor has of survival. Thus, your journey through the human body begins. Created as an add-on for Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator, Battle for Midway deals with two major World War II events with sixteen aerial combat missions focusing on the May 5-9, 1942 Battle of the Coral Sea (6) and its follow-up conflict, the June 4-5 Battle of Midway (10). Represent either the Japanese or Americans by using six war-tested aircraft and the Japanese Kyushu J7W Shinden (translation: Magnificent Lightning), included as a bonus plane. This experimental interceptor emphases climb rate, speed, and firepower, but never reached production. The American aircraft include the Douglas SBD-3 Dauntless, Grumman F4F Wildcat, Douglas TBD-1 Devastator, Brewster F2A-3 Buffalo, Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and a bonus plane, the Lockheed P-38 Lightning. In addition to the bonus interceptor, the Japanese air power consists of the Aichi D3A-1 "Val", Mitsubishi A6M2 "Zero", Kawanishi N1K1-J "George", Nakajima KI43-I "Oscar" and the Mitsubishi G4M1 "Betty". The manual contains two maps of the Pacific battle theaters as well as 18-pages devoted to the history that includes historical photographs and Armed Forces posters of the era. Abacus uses "elevated mesh terrain" to develop the tropical island landscapes and 3D mission objects such as aircraft carriers, battleships, buildings and more. In 2001, an update was released that allowed the expansion to be used with Microsoft Combat Simulator 2.

Cabela's Big Game Hunter 5: Platinum Series Elsinore Multimedia Inc. / Activision Value Publishing, Inc. [top]

Designed to capture the full experience of big-game hunting, this simulates hunting sessions complete with safety, legal ramifications, rules, regulations, scouting, tracking, and challenges. Each of the four hunting regions, Arizona, British Columbia, Louisiana, and Wyoming, has a Staging Area and three Hunting Areas. Use the Staging Area to get information on the hunting locales from the expert at the lodge, scout out the areas in your vehicle, or get a briefing on regulations, restrictions, and legal hours from the game warden at his station. Three modes of gameplay, Quick Hunt, Campaign, or Challenge, offer unique hunting sessions, as well as three levels of difficulty. All regions contain a Private Property area where you can establish permanent blinds, feeders, plant corn or clover, or scout, but only after receiving permission from the landowner after agreeing to rid the area of at least five varmints (e.g., coyotes, squirrels, opossums, rabbits, or raccoons) prior to hunting season. This Scouting Season occurs only in campaign hunts and sets up future hunts where you reap the benefits of your pre-season planning. Campaign hunts feature three seasons in each of the four regions, with a small cash allowance provided for outfitting gear, weapons, and accessories. Quick hunts have no time limits during eight hunting seasons, with pre-selected gear, tags, weapons, and a small stipend to change out equipment if desired. The ten progressively harder Challenge hunts have specific goals and must be played in sequential order. Species in big-game hunt sessions include caribou, elk, bear, moose, mountain goats, deer, and more. Additional features include first- and third-person perspectives depending on the hunting mode, penalty points for breaking rules (accumulate ten and your hunt is over), video hunting, trophy awards, two target-range mini-games, a progress screen, and a record book for highest scores in campaign and challenge hunts. The available arsenal contains 13 firearms and three bows, 25 calls and lures, and 23 types of ammunition.

Weapons include shotgun, crossbow and a rifle with a variety of scopes and you can pick up burritos and broccoli and use them to create 4 different types of lethal farts. Deer Hunter 5: Tracking Trophies Sylum Entertainment Ltd., Sunstorm Interactive, Inc. / WizardWorks Software [top]

This is the fifth game in the Deer Hunter series, and the last published by WizardWorks before it got acquired by Infogrames (later Atari). As in the previous games, you play the role of a hunter who roams through several maps around the world in search of bucks and does to kill and add to his or her trophy collection. The main addition to this sequel is the presence of more species of wild animals - elk, grizzly bears, black bears, and mountain lions - who can also be hunted. While deer tend to run away from hunters, these other wild animals may attack the player. They are rare, though, and not as threatening or dangerous as in some other Sunstorm hunting titles, like the Rocky Mountain Trophy Hunter series. There's also a Tournament mode where other AI hunters are present in the field hunting (or scaring the hunt) with you for a set amount of time, and the Hunting Season, which appeared before in Deer Hunter 3 and 4, which has now been expanded so that you can spend several years (in game time) managing a herd. Another difference, on the minus side, is that Deer Hunter 4's option to play the game as the deer (the hunted instead of the hunter), has since been removed.

Eurofighter Typhoon Digital Image Design Ltd. / Rage Games Ltd. / Ubi Soft Entertainment Software [top]

Eurofighter Typhoon is the successor to Total Air War. In a near future, and in a surprising move, Russia quickly invades the eastern countries of Europe. Iceland is the next one of the list, however NATO has basically abandoned the country in an attempt to protect the Western countries of Europe. The ICEFOR is outnumbered, but is able to deploy a small number of the new Typhoon aircraft. It's up to you to turn the tide of the war.One of the game most interesting aspects is that it entitles you to take over the destiny of 6 pilots. Each one will be assigned different missions depending on their abilities - such as bombing, interception, Wild Weasel - several of these missions even going on at the same time. You are able to switch at any time between your pilots, taking charge of the most critical and dangerous tasks of the mission, and leaving up to the AI the others. As the war goes on, each pilot can be injured, lost behind enemy lines after an unlucky ejection and waiting for the rescue helicopters, or taken prisoner and even be interrogated by the Russians. The game also features a very extensive virtual battleground over Iceland, probably the most advanced ever created at the time of writing. A dynamic camera enables you to watch the war in real-time - should it be Gripens dogfighting with Su-27s, Apaches attacking tanks or Tornados going on bombing runs. As the war unfolds, news will be delivered by an online newspaper, so be prepared to read the headline "a new failure for the ICEFOR" quite a lot of times. Any update called Eurofighter Typhoon: Operation Tide was released one year later with added a new campaign and weather effects.

Make use of real-life sportsman skills in this final game in the series, the 2001 edition of comprehensive hunting games endorsed by the popular outdoors magazine. Virtual hunters can track a variety of realistically behaving bear, moose, deer and elk across 3D renditions of their natural habitats that include large areas in Maine and Alaska. The inclusion of an ATV in this edition makes it easier to get from place to place and allows gamers to spend less time moving and more time hunting. There's thirteen real-world locations in which to hunt bears, deer, elk and more. It has hundreds of gun and gear combinations, and thirty mission-based hunts include spotting and tracking. Get The Bunny Data Becker [top]

Data Becker, long known for its flight simulation add-ons, joins the hunting craze with Get the Bunny, a sports shooter that requires you to clear your farm of the pesky rascals. Two levels of action, secret bonus areas, 3D landscapes, and a 360° hunting perspective have you getting down and dirty on the farm as you try and clear the infestation.
Before the hunt, you choose your weapon from an arsenal containing a shotgun, machinegun, and sniper rifle. Each level contains bonus targets that unlock hidden items and levels, or earn points. If you're "hunting" at work, a "boss button" minimizes the game and shows a "work related" document when pressed.

Halcyon Sun Kuju Entertainment / Brightstar Games [top]

This was a revolutionary new idea that combined the internet with television: a science fiction TV series where the viewer took part in the action. The story was downloaded in episodic packages, each building on the other to add more virtual sets, characters and items. The average episode was 45 minutes long, about half of which was gameplay, the rest of which was dialogue-driven drama. For the writers, the challenge was to write a 300-page script that could be divided into 12 episodes, when not only the action but also the available cast members and scenery escalated with each episode. The developers wanted TV quality so they paid TV money. There was plenty of scope for character development; the co-ed military fleet was modelled on that in Joe Haldeman's Forever War, with marriages as temporary contracts in the style of Larry Niven's Known Space. Leading man Dru Avery was conducting a not-so-clandestine affair with Rae Sherard a military attaché with the untrustworthy allied race, the Eridani. Dru's boss was falling for Rae's liaison officer. It was all going to end in tears. With animation limited by the size of the available episodes, the onus for originality lay on the script itself. The audience is kept guessing, that no character is safe and no opportunities for skulduggery go unused. The series gained a small but loyal following, particularly among Babylon Five newsgroups, who mistakenly believed that the writers were followers of the show. Its removal from the original distribution format turned it into a dated-looking, relatively low-resolution space shoot-'em-up, with non-game scenes that went on for far too long.

Hostile Waters: Antaeus Rising Rage Games Ltd. / Interplay Entertainment Corp. [top]

The year is 2032. The world is at peace, after having banished war in the final battle long ago. All weapons have been destroyed to ensure peace. However, in the Pacific, a cabal of former magnates: ex-leaders, ex-tycoons, ex-military, and more, have joined together and occupied 20 islands and is building new war machines. There is no way to fight them, except this one last remaining "Adaptive Cruiser", the Antaeus. Lost in the final battle with all hands, this was one of the ultimate weapons. Complete with nano-factories that can build air/ground/naval units out of resources and energy. Its crew's memory engrams have been stored on "soulcatcher" chips.Reactivation signal has been sent. Soon Antaeus will rise from the bottom, and you'll be in command. Good luck, and good hunting. This is a 3D real-time strategy game with several new twists. You will need to harvest resources as you can only build new units by harvesting existing resources/energy. You then "crew" these units with these "soulcatcher" profiles you have stored. As you have limited profiles (you can't "copy" them) available you are limited in the number of units you can deploy at once. You will need to defend your cruiser as well as attack the enemy, obtain resources, and other missions. The game is mission-based. Destroy enemy radar to prevent them from knowing where you are. Deploy harvester unit to salvage enemy remains and structures. You can even capture enemy units for study. You can issue pretty complicated orders by using a set of visual icons. Multiple islands have multiple objectives for you to complete. The game is played in a 3D "behind-unit" perspective with a 3D map similar to Activision's Battlezone.

This is the first in the long-running series of first person hunting games in a 3D environment. Each animal has a variety of information on it and must be hunted differently (and shot in different places) to succeed. Additionally the player can visit a Hunting range to improve accuracy. The number of possible landscapes includes such locales as Alaska, Arizona, British Columbia, Colorado and Texas. In each area, the player can move around forwards, backwards, left and right with freedom of 3D movement. The player is also able to Run, Jump and Crouch. The game features 30 items of equipment which includes rifles, bows & arrows, binoculars and pistols. Operation Tiger Hunt / M4 Armored Clash / M4: Operation Tiger Hunt Digital Fusion, Inc. / Infogrames, Inc., WizardWorks [top]

Digital Fusion, creators of the bunker-based first-person shooters Beach Head 2000 and Beach Head 2002, presents Tiger Hunt, a WWII tank simulation where the goal is to "drive - shoot - destroy." Players get behind the controls of an M4 Sherman tank during missions in war torn Europe as they hunt down and wreak havoc on Hummels, Panthers, and Tigers using various types of ammo like armor piercing shells, high explosives, incendiary (phosphorous) shells, and specialized high-velocity armor piercing (HVAP) rounds. While gameplay and missions consist of straightforward tank hunting action, players must not only learn to control and maneuver tanks but also become familiar with the schematics of enemy units in order to select the proper ammunition and optimum target (strike) points. Avoidance of tank-killing mines is imperative as is learning how to scout enemy territory, using terrain to best advantage, and ambushing other tanks. Players can opt for a variety of camera views including main, turret, driver, and orbital perspectives, with zoom features for close ups of enemies and battlefields.

Primal Prey Sunstorm, Arush / ValuSoft [top]

As a time traveler, you are sent back to primal times to hunt dinosaurs. You can choose from 10 weapons and hunt by daylight, night (using night-vision devices) or during dawn. Besides the weapons, there's equipment stuff for hunting: things to bait dinosaurs or to camouflage yourself. During each mission you get to know the purpose of your job. That could be either to get a delicious steak for a gourmet restaurant, dinos to catch for zoos, scientific research, or for weather or tv shows. For successfuly ended missions, the player earns money and there are 3 stars for assessment: 1) Hunt was successful 2) minimum weight of dinosaur is reached 3) mission completed in hunting time limit. The hunt always takes place in same area, which isn't that big, but is not wide open. Primal Prey needs RealOneArcade for running it on and is uses the Deer Hunter 4 engine. Playing in high resolution, this game really looks acceptable, but it didn't convince me that much. Often the gameplay repeats and motivation and game tension is rather small. But whoever likes hunting dinosaurs should give it a try.

This is an exciting underwater shark hunt from the makers of the Deer Hunter series. Take hold of any of 9 powerful underwater weapons, then strap on any of 9 equipment items including air tanks, various high tech fins and choose from several wet or dry suits. The game features more than eight of the most ferocious and deadly predators to ever stalk the seas, including the awesome Great White, the Tiger Shark, the Great Hammerhead, and many more. On your quest, you'll swim through seas filled with life, such as whales, turtles, dolphins, and many kinds of fish. There are 16 shark-filled hunting locations, including Tahiti, Africa, Palau and more. Hunt your way through a series of missions in Career Mode or play random missions striving for the largest shark ever. Find "secrets" like treasure and lost idols in Career mode mission to gain new and powerful equipment. What makes the game so thrilling is that you are not in your natural medium, so you only move slowly through the water whereas the sharks are speedier and the scary atmosphere of being in a place where you can also be killed is frightening. There is a "shark sensor" which sounds like your heartbeat and its pounding grows more and more terrifying and frantic as the shark approaches, until it finally stops when it eats you. Your compass, depth meter, and available air sensors also have to be watched. You have to remember where your boat is too if you need to go back up for air or heal your wounds, and if the weather is bad it makes finding the boat tough. This is worth playing for a break from the usual first person shooters.

This is an action-strategy game from the creator of the popular series of X-Plane flight simulators, featuring giant manned robots. Eight months ago, our outposts at Proxima-4 were destroyed by small nuclear weapons launched by a then-unknown enemy. Most survivors were quickly mopped up by the invader's clean-up force... a horde of walking mechanical terrors that raged through the cities, destroying every vehicle and every person that survived the initial onslaught. The United Human Federation (UHF) has been rapidly re-designing some of our all-terrain light transport freighter-walkers to carry our few mobile defensive weapons left over from the Times of War several centuries ago. We are also designing a whole new generation of giant marching hardware to hold it's own against the Aliens. Our new weapon has been designated the All Terrain Attack Walker, or A.T.A.W., and will hopefully give us a fighting chance in the war for survival that has been thrust upon us. The program includes several game modes. Initially a commercial product, it was later made freeware. To activate the full version you must enter any 6 digit number in the main menu.

ShootEm Up 2D/3D

Amanagi Rage [top]

This is an excellent horizontal shooter from Japan that boasts excellent 3D graphics and gameplay. Formerly shareware, the game has been released into the public domain by the author. The animations are very smooth, the ship designs are excellent, and the gameplay is superb, albeit probably too easy for die-hard action fans. You can store several weapon power-ups in a small inventory displayed at the bottom of the screen, so you always know what you are using. Also, most power-ups cycle through all possible choices, so you can wait for the one you want before picking the item up. The ships are not as detailed as recent commercial 3D shooters, but they are still very well-designed and truly look like the 3D models they are. The boss ships especially are very good-looking - much better designs than many commercial shooters. If you enjoy shooters, Amanagi is one quality freeware that will not disappoint, even if it starts out a bit easier than average.

This is a space-faring, top-down, vertically-scrolling, shoot-em-up. Pilot your spaceship against insurmountable swarms of enemy ships and asteroid-planted bases. This space-shooter features six levels filled with 3D enemies and bosses. Players will take control of a spaceship, witness special effects such as translucent objects, rotations, and zooming sequences. The player's ship's offensive weapons attack on 2 planes: The rapid fire laser is effective against flying targets, while firing also launches missiles at a lower rate of fire that attack ground targets. There is a plethora of powerups to collect that grant such added capabilities as more speed, more powerful lasers and missiles, and higher rate of fire. Be careful, though, because some collectible items are actually powerdowns. The "Assembler" part of the title refers to sets of specific ship pieces that the player pursues in the game. These components assemble to create a more powerful ship with greater offensive and defensive capabilities. Fifteen original songs are included.

Atari Anniversary Edition Digital Eclipse Software, Inc. / Infogrames, Inc. [top]

This features 12 classic Atari games and features the following: Asteroids, Asteroids Deluxe, Battlezone, Centipede, Crystal Castles, Gravitar, Millipede, Missile Command, Pong, Super Breakout, Tempest, Warlords. In addition to the pure emulation modes, there is an option to display the cabinet art surrounding the display of each game, intended to give the player a sense of actually playing a stand-up machine. Each game also has a toggle for an "enhanced" graphical mode, which varies from game to game. For instance, "enhanced" asteroids merely has a static backdrop, whereas "enhanced" warlords is a complete graphical overhaul with new colors. It should be noted that the "enhanced" version of Tempest is none other than Tempest Tubes, a modification for Tempest made in 1982 by Duncan Brown. Also included is a gallery of game memorabilia, video clips of an interview with Nolan Bushnell, and desktop themes for Windows. It includes all the games from earlier titles Atari Arcade Hits 1, released in 1999, Atari Arcade Hits 2, released in 2000, and Atari Greatest Hits which was a compilation of both also released in 2000.

Barrage Tribe Twinkle Soft [top]

A textbook vertical shmup where the player earns bombs by "scratching" bullets. Bombs have a point multiply radius, so setting them off closer to enemies yields more points. It's got nice weaponry, good enemies, a cool mix of 2D and 3D graphics, and some killer MIDI tunes that match the action very well. You even have to dodge moving parts of the environment. Move with the arrow keys, hold Z to shoot, X to use bombs.

Cho Ren Sha 68k Famibe No Yosshin [top]

This is another excellent shooter from Japan's incredibly prolific freeware game development community first released as a homebrew game for the X68000 computer. This vertical shooter boasts excellent 2D graphics, soundtrack, and a lot of neat ship designs, especially the bosses. You can keep up to 3 power-up items you come across to use later when the going gets tough. The game is unfortunately rather short, although it's difficult enough to keep you entertained for at least a few hours if you're a novice or average action gamer. Joystick experts will probably be able to finish it in under an hour, though.

Creature Jungle 16 Takeuchi Kouta [top]

This is an excellent freeware top-down shoot 'em up. The game's objective is the same as all the other shooters: shoot everything and anything that moves. It continues the excellence of Japan's freeware SHMUPS community: the game is good-looking, the animations are smooth, and the action fast and furious. It's a bit difficult, what with so many weapon effects and fireworks flying around the screen at once. SHMUPS fans will probably find the game challenging and fun, though, and the great graphics are hypnotic enough to glue you to the screen for hours on end.

Dove Intergenies [top]

This side-scrolling shmup has you control a space pilot fighting back against attacking aliens. Here sustained fire is required. With the progress of time, it becomes increasingly difficult to keep the upper hand. The weapon system is easy to use and straightforward: 3 (or 4?) different weapon types, each with 3 levels of power. You can collect options that rotate around your ship and are indesctructible, power-up with missiles, and a charged shot for bigger problems. You can also adjust your special weapon from front to back. The game can fatally surprise you. You can get caught from behind, trapped when a door closes, or hit by falling debris.

This is a pretty nice vertically scrolling shmup with some nice 3D-looking enemies. There's different power-ups to collect for extra types of shots as well as shields. Sometimes there'll be Galaga-style series of fast-moving ships, and there's also some big asteroids that'll come your way.

This is 2D side-scrolling shoot 'em up similar to Katakis, X-Out or R-Type. The player controls a spaceship, flies to the right with a side view, and shoots enemies, asteroids and bosses. Various weapons can be collected, like a 3-way gun, a shield or a laser fitted on the ship's back. Normal weapons can be made more powerful by pressing a button. The game has eight different levels.

Intensity XS: ReCharge Midnight Synergy [top]

The Mon Saanti Empire is broken and the galaxy is at peace. But a new threat looms. The Mon Saar, factions of the Mon Saanti Empire, are building a base on the remote world of Vanguard and they have a powerful ally. Once more, you will command the IXS Fighter Craft to rid the galaxy of this threat. This is the sequel to Intensity XS. Once again, you control your ship with the mouse, holding down the left button for continuous fire. Pressing the right button fires a volley of proton torpedoes. You must fight wave after wave of enemy craft. Dispersed among them are bonus/upgrade satellites. These can get you part of the word BONUS or upgrade your weapon. As long as you have had upgrades, if you get hit, you just lower by one level. If you have no upgrades left and get hit, you die and game over. After so many waves, you warp to the next level and continue on. This time, it takes even more waves before you warp and the enemies are tougher.

Kioh Gyoku Sare Do Shunsatsu? / Amusement Makers [top]

This is a vertical-scrolling danmaku shoot 'em up, and is the second official game in the Seihou Project. It is a unique game where two players indirectly battle one another by charging and releasing charge attacks and bombs upon the other player, similar in the style of Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream. There's massive emphasis on grazing streaming bullets, where two characters engage in danmaku gameplay within individual and separate play areas (aka. split-screen). Upon meeting certain conditions, players are able to unleash a variety of character-specific attacks upon their opponents in an attempt to whittle down their remaining health points. In Story Mode, the player will face five opponents, each more capable than the previous. It also features a Match Play Mode where the player may face off against AI opponents or compete against other players, as well as watch AI vs. AI matches.

RayCrisis Taito Corporation / CyberFront Corporation, MediaKite, Sourcenext [top]

This is the third game released in the "Ray" series of Taito shooting games. Chronologically, it is considered a prequel to the first game, RayForce. First released for arcades in 1998, it supported co-op mode for two players, which the PlayStation ports released in 2000 lack; these ports are the only games in the "Ray" series to lack co-op. An ambitious and unethical scientist; a secret experiment gone horribly awry; an artificially-intelligent supercomputer gone mad. Combine them and you have the ingredients for the imminent extinction of mankind. You are humanity's last hope, a hotshot pilot given the unenviable task of flying an experimental fighter into the dark heart of the Con-Human Network. Choose from one of three Wave Rider vehicles, each equipped with a primary laser array, secondary lock-on lasers, and a devastating special weapon for emergency situations. One of the best things about RayCrisis is the wide range of pretty 3D environments, ranging from futuristic cities to a desert to a confusing cyber-grid construction (my favorite level). There are two play modes in the game which are not so different from each other. In Original Mode, you can pick the three levels that you want to play; in Special Mode, you must play through a given set of levels, starting the game with zero lives and no continues. In either mode, you can pick between three differently equipped ships, called Wave Runners. The three ships are called the WR-01R, WR-02R, and WR-03, and are each equipped with a different main gun, have different lock-on abilities, and a special attack weapon that can be fired once the special attack gauge is at full strength. The game is more than a few notches more difficult than your average shooter, with swarms of enemies constantly filling the screen and challenging bosses. If you take too many tries to defeat the final boss, you will see a suboptimal ending for the game - an interesting innovation. In another innovation that harks back to school days, you are given a letter grade at the end of each level, and an overall grade at the end of the game. In terms of the number of levels, RayCrisis is quite short. But it doesn't mean you will breeze through the game in only a few hours, because as mentioned earlier it is quite difficult - moreso if you want a better grade than 'C' or 'D.' As was the case with RayStorm, the previous title in the series, the backgrounds in RayCrisis comprises huge 3D polygonal objects, with several scrolling layers and jaw-dropping lighting effects. While it is a solid shooter, RayCrisis feels like a 'B movie' compared to classics like G-Darius due to the much more limited variety of weapons and power-ups. RayCrisis: Series Termination is the final entry in Taito's acclaimed trilogy of shooters, and it goes out with a glorious bang.

Raystorm / Operation Raystorm 2219 Taito Corporation / Xplosiv [top]

Originally released in Japan as an arcade game in 1996, it was later ported to consoles in 1997 and PC in 2001. Although there is no story connection, it is often thought of as the spiritual successor to RayForce, which had similar gameplay. You have 2 weapons at you disposal, a vulcan gun and a lock-on missile attack. You can also do 2 special attacks by using the lock-on system in a special way. The graphics are all in 3D, but the gameplay mechanics are in 2D. There are 7 stages, each ending with a giant end boss. Grab your oxygen mask and jump into the future of interplanetary defense. The year is 2219 AD, and Earth's Star Federation has unleashed the R-GRAY advanced tactical combat fighter to save the planet from certain destruction at the hands of the bloodthirsty Secilia Federation. Despite impossible odds, you must now command a specially outfitted R-GRAY fighter to defend Earth from certain destruction. Each fighter is equipped with lock-on lasers, pulse lasers, and a single devastating assault laser array that can destroy all sighted targets at once. Even with this technology at your disposal, the battle will not be easy. Earth's forces are depleted, and the merciless hordes of Secilia will settle for nothing less than complete annhilation of Earth. Fortunately, Star command has created two R-GRAY prototypes, so if you need extra firepower, a skilled friend can fly at your side.

Sentimental Shooting [J] While [top]

This is a doujin game based on the characters of a popular dating simulation series. It's infamous for combining a scrolling shooter which is a very engaging (and difficult) shoot 'em up with provocative adult imagery. Its nicknames amongst fans are typically Senchi or the contraction SenchiGura. You like hentai girls? Well, now you can shoot down spaceships while trying to undress beautiful girls on the background. During the first phase you have to destroy the 100% of her dress to get to the second phase when you have to beat a boss and destroy the last parts to get the nudity. Hilarious and sexy at the same time. Also easy levels are not that bad for a starter to the genre who don't want immediately fast-paced action (especially because you don't have only to survive and destroy enemies, but tear up the dress too before the end of the level).

Space Tripper Pompom Games [top]

This is a great-looking shareware game that's simple enough. You're in a hovering ship which can move around an arena in any direction and can face and fire either forwards or backwards. You have a choice between a wide arc of fire, or a single focused, powerful stream and each can be powered up individually, with a helpful little indicator in one corner of the screen to show the relative strengths of the two. It's similar to 80s shoot 'em up Uridium. You have to shoot all enemies and survive through 14 levels. These include a Holographic world which transforms as you face it, an Aztec word with traps and curses, and a Mekka world full of battleships and tanks. The game also features large polygon-based boss enemies and two different weapons, upgraded by collecting boxes. Aside from being ridiculously pretty, Space Tripper is as full as adrenaline as any game needs to be. There are enemies everywhere, close calls, tight squeezes and so on; tough bosses that need to be weakened and beaten, a refreshing change from the norm in today's games where everything is at full power until it dies, these bosses actually give you real, visual feedback on how well you are beating them. All of this combines to make one of the most well-crafted shooters. It has that visceral, biting tenseness and adrenaline of an arcade hit in years gone by. This is a definite return to those wonderful days when the high-score was king and games were played as far through as you were good enough to get, not until their inevitable conclusion and roll of credits. You are not going to beat it on its hardest difficulty for a long time, but you will want to so much it hurts and when you do, panting and sweating and shaking from the effort, you'll know that it was all worth it.

Star Fire 5 Union Software Group [top]

This is an amateur Spanish-made shoot 'em up DOS game with SVGA graphics and programming errors as well. The opposing ships take "abnormal" paths (some spend much time "flying" at the side of the walls of stage play) and indeed, the routine deletion after the explosion sprite is botched , because it is very slow, overlapping explosions, enemy ships exploded for a couple of seconds. On the other hand, to destroy some ships, you need to capture capsules used to improve our weapons, the bad thing is that these capsules are easily confused with enemy fire. There are no bosses in the game either.

Star Monkey Small Rockets [top]

This is a shareware space shooter game that follows the legacy of such classics as Raiden, Aero Fighters, etc. The plotline is inconsequential, and involves aliens that try to do something bad and which you must blow up. You'll battle waves after waves of enemy ships and monsters and confront huge end-level bosses while collecting power-ups and raking up points in your little but powerful ship. The game uses a 3D engine which boasts several graphical gimmicks like 32-bit color depths, colored lighting, dynamic shadows, etc. There's no multiplayer support, but you can upload your scores to Small Rocket's website and have them ranked against other fellow star monkeys.

Thera 5 Union Software Group [top]

Spanish-made shooter, though game is in English, from top-down view. It seems designed for co-op with two players. You play as a red-haired girl armed with a huge gun and fight monsters in a techno-fantasy world. The heroine moves strictly in a horizontal or vertical way - while enemies prefer diagonal direction. Secondly, in addition to the enemy, the terrain is dotted with plentiful indestructible traps - for instance, revolving spiked circles which if approached can give a serious injury. The stock of health is decent, but additional "lives" is not. Enemies - for example, can be methane fireballs, or anthropomorphic saber-toothed tigers. Please note that there are indestructible (supposedly) places where these things are endlessly revived. Ammo is infinite, and the radius of destruction far exceeds the same parameter as the opponents. Additional weapons can also be found: for example, almost at the very beginning of the game can take a machine that - though at the time has limited ammo - will allow you to fire in three directions at once. Changing the weapon can only be done by picking up a new one and the old will be lost. The graphics are pretty simple and minimalistic - restrictions affecting the selected viewing perspective. However, the location is still atmospheri with really unusual surroundings in the techno-fantasy world.
