FPS Year Summary - 2002

Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault recreated various World War II Missions including the famous Omaha Beach landing at Normandy which was famously portrayed in the 1998 movie Saving Private Ryan. Though it is bloodless, the battles based on real-life events are intense and adrenalin rushing. Battlefield 1942 was another popular shooter set in World War II that in addition to various singleplayer missions including jumping out of an airplane in a parachute, has an Axis vs Allies multiplayer in which you can use many different vehicles and planes. Command & Conquer Renegade was an FPS based on the strategy series that wasn't a hit on release but has developed a loyal following. You have to rescue captured scientists and defeat the NOD bad guys inluding destroying their buildings and vehicles. Especially for fans of the series, it's fascinating to be able to actually enter buildings from previous games and drive the vehicles also in this exciting and underrated game.

Grand Theft Auto 3 was the first 3D game in the series of criminals on the loose and was extremely popular on PS2 and then on PC 7 months later. This TPS was also very controversial as you could steal cars and run people over and beat prostitutes up. The gameplay however is very addictive and open-ended in the large Liberty City where you can roam and drive around while listening to great music on the radio and take on various missions as well. Mafia offered similar gameplay though it had more linear but lengthy missions and more action on foot but with great historical atmosphere in the 1930's setting. Ethnic Cleansing was disturbing in its intent - to be a propaganda tool for a white supremacist group. 3D games are easy enough to be created now so that any group can use one for irs own purposes. Fortunately, this hate spouting game was so poorly done that noone in their right mind would ever be converted to their cause. Under Ash also took players into the shoes of a never before done protagonist - a Palestinian fighting against occupying Israelis. Again, this was a low budget game but it tried to portray Middle East Arabs as something other than villains in a post 9/11 world.

America's Army was a pricy and well-done recruitment tool for the U.S. Army to train potential soldiers. Offered free to the public, it used the Unreal Engine 2 to create one of the best-looking free games ever made. New missions and upgrades have been added throughout its life and eventually using the next-gen Unreal Engine 3 in 2009. Code RED: Battle For Earth was an example of a fun free game made with an open source engine (id's Quake 2). Though not state of the art anymore, fun gameplay and interesting ideas can still be made like this one with aliens like in the Mars Attacks collector cards and movie. Silent Hill 2 was the first in the popular survival horror series to come to the PC though more than a year after its original PS2 version. This was a director's cut with additional content and the creepy puzzle solving and horrifying enemies are a treat for horror fans.

Alias Underground Episodes 1-10 Dream Mechanics, Inc. / ABC Television [top]

ABC Television released this promotional episodic videogame to hype the TV show starring Jennifer Garner as an undercover CIA spy named Sydney Bristow. The training mission plus 9 more episodes were available for download on ABC's website initially prior to and during the second season of the show. It is a 3D third-person stealth/action game and episodes came out on a monthly basis between September 2002 and June 2003. From both 3rd or 1st-person perspective, Sydney can run, jump, duck, climb, and interact with objects. When encountering a bad guy, she can punch, kick, or shoot if she gets hold of a gun which will allow you to zoom in when in first-person mode. Sydney must use various disguises and act covertly, so as not to blow her cover, while infiltrating various areas. There was a contest which ran until June 30, 2003 based on getting a high score in the game and it featured prizes from Ford Focus cars and Nokia phones which were also featured as in-game ad sponsors. Initially a free game, ABC later charged US$0.99 for each mission excluding the training mission. This first episode trains you on how to become a field agent, and shows you how to master the moves. It was released concurrently with the Turkish Embassy episode and must be completed first before continuing. Some levels resembled episodes from the TV series (such as "Raid on SD-6", based on first season episode "The Box"), while others were unique creations.

Aliens Vs. Predator 2: Primal Hunt Monolith / Fox, Sierra [top]

This expansion features new separate human, alien, and predator campaigns (three levels for each). The Predator campaign (which, is probably the most significant in the game) takes place 500 years prior to the events in Aliens Versus Predator II. The Alien and Corporate campaign also take place before AvP2, and will explain the nature of the storyline that starts you off in AvP2. The campaigns are only average in quality though and not as good as the ones in the excellent original game. The human campaigns are especially difficult and you will die often. There are three new monsters that aren't used very often including a huge worm that pops up right under your feet. The 4 new multiplayer maps have nothing newly interesting. The humans get a new short-range 360-degree motion detector, a double pistol, and mountable turrets, the predators get an unexciting flechette gun and a really underpowered suicide detonation attack, and the predaliens can now bite heads.

America's Army: Operations U.S. Army ;-) [top]

America's Army is certainly one of the best free 3d shooter games ever made. It cost several million dollars to develop and aims to educate you about the US Army and its career opportunities and values. You need to create a game account that tracks your progress and lets you access the official servers. Then, you'll need to pass at least four offline basic training missions: rifle marksmanship, an obstacle course, US weapons training, and training for MOUT (military operations in urban terrain). Then you can optionally progress through advanced training for snipers or airborne troops, for example, which will in turn open up new online missions and gear. Once ready, you can then join online multiplayer matches against enemy terrorist forces. You'll fight on very nice-looking levels such as a huge snow-covered bridge littered with the burning wrecks of cars, raid a camp in the middle of a night-shrouded forest, and battle in an Alaskan pipeline pump station, among others. Combat is sort of like Counter-Strike but with even more realism, in which both teams have opposing goals--usually assaulting or defending an area--that they try to complete during short rounds typically lasting somewhere around five minutes. If you die during a round, you're forced to sit out and watch the action as an invisible spectator until a new round begins. The impressive realism in movement, the way your weapons fire with kickback and the need to use cover all add to the the need for teamwork to win. The excellent sound and nice graphics powered by the Unreal engine also add to this great game. It had a budget of $7 million and came out on America's birthday, July 4th.

Battlefield 1942 Digital Illusions / Electronic Arts [top]

Differently than the name suggests, important battles from the 2nd World War and not only from 1942 are "played" in the game (from the Swedish developer team Dice). Locations include Central Europe, Africa, the Pacific and the Soviet Union. In part, one must jump off with a parachute, storm the beach partly from ships through landing crafts. One can attack with a sniper's gun or bazooka in the battle. Also as a medic or mechanic with special abilities one can also be spawned. On the battlefields jeeps, troop transporters, different tanks and airplanes as well as ships are available. Everything is operated differently. Also MG nests, anti-aircraft and heavy guns to defend the ships can be used any time. In different buildings one can heal himself in medicine cupboards, ammunition boxes supply the player with bullet supplies. In the game it is a matter taking flags and of holding them. It is played always in 2 teams (axis and allies). One must stay near your own flag to protect it or go for an opponent's flag (which after some time with no enemies in the vicinity of the flag changes colour, in this case the flag remains gray, thus neutral). If one has more enemy flags, the score of the opposing team sinks. If it reaches zero left uncaptured, one has won the battle. Battlefield 1942 impresses with great graphics and a sharp play feeling. Every vehicle feels different, nevertheless, the control has not got too complex, thus the player quickly will learn. Battlefield offers far-reaching configuration possibilities and a satisfactory singleplayer mode. The bots work (in view of the complexity of the play) satisfactorily and can become to a great extent configured. If one does not have enough players, one can also rush into a Co-op mode and with the bots skirmish (with good AI, having 2 or 3 to every 1 player makes it mostly fun. I prefer personally Battlefield 1942 nowadays to UT2003 quite clearly.

Command & Conquer Renegade Westwood / Electronic Arts [top]

This is developer Westwood's first 3d-Shooter, based on the successful Command & Conquer real time strategy series. Westwood's own engine was made for this (a reason, why the development time on it stretched so long). The engine is not bad at all, however, it shows also some weaknesses in features. Westwood still made a first-class game though. In the missions there is a lot to shoot always. More than in other shooters one must destroy buildings and vehicles as well as opponents who are on foot. One slips into the role of Nick "Havoc" Parker, who will be familiar to C&C players. A Rambo-type who already cleared up in the real time strategy-games as a one-man army. One therefore fights on the side of the GDI and must fight against the NODs (in general the bad persons). The NODs succeeded in arresting some of the best scientists of the GDI. The task in the game is therefore: to release them and to destroy the craft of the NOD. One gets practically all buildings and vehicles from the C&C universe to see (and can enter them or use). Especially in network play, possibilities come up for all kinds of tactical considerations. Renegade has been quite a lot of fun for me. Cool cutscenes and being able to be in a fully 3D C&C universe is fascinating. There is a little to criticize in Renegade, except maybe not one feature is astounding but the overall effect of everything is great. The multiplayer game is likewise interesting, however, it needs as minimum 5 players on every side to be fun. Unfortunately, Westwood did not offer necessary support for the game as the developer was shut down in Feb/2003. There are barely any patches, and therefore Renegade sank into the sea of many multiplayer games rather quickly. It does have a devoted fan following even at the end of the decade though.

Conflict: Desert Storm Pivotal Games / Sales Curve Interactive, Take Two [top]

Desert Storm is a tactical shooter, set in Iraq. The game is set during the first gulf war back in the early 1990s and has ideas borrowed from the book Bravo Two Zero and other real missions from the war. One fights either for the Delta Force or SAS and in teams with up to 4 combatants who have different specialisations (i.e.: explosive, sniper's guns or machine guns). As your troops gain more experience, they will gain ranks and upgrade their skills. As their skills get better, the more effective they become at doing their job. A campaign exists of 14 missions which contain for instance, bridge attacks or hostage rescues. You can switch from first person to third person view by the press of a button. You and your team are sent on missions with specific objectives, whether it be to infiltrate a base, destroy a SAM site, or assassinate an opposing general. You can both control your men individually and send them orders. Your men can be ordered to attack, retreat, follow, stay, and do many more things. If the mission requires it, you must drive tanks and jeeps around while your squad mans the guns on the vehicle. There is also the ability to play up to four player co-op with friends, with each person controlling a soldier in your squad. At the end of each mission, if you performed well, your men are awarded medals for their bravery. If you work hard enough, you may even be able to earn the Medal of Honor. Desert Storm is a console conversion and its console origin still is clearly evident. Improvements for the PC version seem to be in short supply and thus Desert Storm is not free of frustration for spoilt PC users. Indeed, it is playable but offers also nothing new or innovative, but only good entertainment with light console atmosphere.

Deadly Dozen 2: Pacific Theater nFusion Interactive / Infrogames Entertainment [top]

Deadly Dozen 2 plays like the title suggests in the biggest part of the Pacifc conflict, but also frostier areas are played in 12 missions of this comprehensive Shooter. One can play the missions alternatively in first-person perspective or in the third-person behind the player perspective and the FPS view is not so well playable. One has 4 companions which can be quickly accessible through key commands. Generally it's very easy to issue a few orders and quickly accessible. The game is as seen by my high mortality rate :) rather a tactical shooter. In the beginning the graphics are desolate, however they become more diverse. For the atmosphere it is pretty successful though. One can put together your companions and their weapons by yourself in the mission briefing. The player has an arsenal in weapons which he can change any time if you grow weary of your opponents. You can also drive vehicles like a tank :), truck and jeep. The levels are expansive, however walls serve as a limitation. Thus, one has mostly only 2-3 ways to achive your mission among the choice which are inspected of course by marksmen and other colleagues. Negative points are when issuing commands to your companions, the results like "follow me" now and then in corners, trees, etc. can become stuck and there remain, thus one must switch over to you and 'release' them. Also, the rather dull sayings of your companions (and yourself with every change of command) become repetitive. Opposite recent games I had fun for several hours and would recommend the game.[Rev. by Ishtar]

Delta Force: Task Force Dagger NovaLogic [top]

Task Force Dagger is based on the Delta Force 3 engine, which already with the appearance of that game was not state-of-the-art graphics at that time either. Clearly about a year after Delta Force 3 this circumstance has not improved of course. This time one appears in 25 missions in Afghanistan. You can play as one of 10 Special Op Forces units deployed in Operation Enduring Freedom including Seal Team 6's role of medic, Green Berets heavy weapon specialists, CIA SOG snipers, etc. There's thirty weapons in all, with 17 being new to the series. Amongst this new arsenal is a UAV or Unmanned Aerial Vehicle in which you can spy on the enemy or call in a devastating air strike. The missions are eventful - like always with Delta Force - and offer some short simple fun. The MP games are still the same, Flag ball, Death Match, Team Death Match, Capture the Flag, Search and Destroy, King of the Hill, and Team King of the Hill. Additional features include a Global Positioning System, mission briefings, weather changes, and a myriad of mission types focusing on infiltration, search and destroy, rescue, reconnaissance, and more. To those who know Delta Force, little really new will be found, but there is some enjoyment to be had still.

Die Hard: Nakatomi Plaza Piranha Games / Sierra [top]

Originally, the Creative Creations developers started work on this as a Duke Numkem 3D then a Half-Life mod before taking the work to Fox (the maker of the films) who financed this final retail game version on the Litchtech engine. The action of this shooter of Sierra is based on the film model of the director John McTiernan's original film (in which Bruce Willis in the lead role became a movie star). It is the yuletide season and the New York cop John McClane travels to L.A. to meet his former wife who separately lives from him with his children. His wife's new employer is a Japanese giant company which establishes a new building as a company headquarter in L.A., which is not finished construction yet. On the main floor, still, there already is a Christmas celebration. John McClane is out of place at the party, but even more so the gangster's group which all take everyone as hostages. The gangsters have prepared for everything including the FBI and any unplanned incidents but not for the stubbornness of John McClane who takes up the fight only with pistol, Zippo and police radio though he is without shoes and socks. One can recognize many scenes from the film, but there are also additional places (cellar, lab). The story is told through in-game graphics. Altogether there are 30 levels. Most persons move well only between the film figure of Ellis (by Hart Bochner) and in the game there is an immense difference already shown. The graphics are rather weak, in particular with the dreary cellar levels. The main weapon is the MP5 of the "terrorists" (gives most ammunition), but there is also grenades, the M60, Steyr Aug and some others. On account of the fact that this is a shooter they had to insert more opponents (how many terrorists can fit in one building? ...). It was also changed that some S.W.A.T teams are able to penetrate into the Nakatomi building. This, just like escaped hostages, one must pull out himself by using an identity disc given to recognize them (not always friendly are the S.W.A.T .'s). The morality system which was announced has is not present. The hard Nakatomi Plaza is a total of one rather simple shooter which uses good recognition value of the film, but technically (graphics, AI) is not very accomplished.

Eight Legged Freaks: Let The Squashing Begin 3D Groove / Warner Bros. [top]

This game is a freeware First Person Shooter, created as promotion for the sci-fi horror comedy Eight Legged Freaks movie. You can either play as Chris or Sam, the male and female characters from the movie, and your task is to bring the Spider invasion of your city to a halt. To help you along the way you have a choice of four weapons and various power-ups and ammo. Eight Legged Freaks also includes various useful features such as the map function. The 3D doom environment is neat as well as the animation of the spiders. However the graphical representation of the levels lacks in lighting and detail as can be expected from the small game size. It requires Shockwave to be installed.

Ethnic Cleansing Resistance Records [top]

This is a controversial computer game developed by Resistance Records, an underground music label of the racist group the National Alliance, specializing in Neo-Nazi and white supremacist bands. The game was released on the Martin Luther King holiday. In the game, the protagonist (the player can choose either a skinhead or a Klansman) runs through a ghetto killing black people and Latinos, before descending into a subway system to kill Jews. Finally he reaches the "Jewish Control Center", where Ariel Sharon, former Prime Minister of Israel, is directing plans for world domination. The player must kill Sharon to win the game. During the game monkey and ape sounds are heard when Blacks are killed, poncho-wearing Latinos say "I'll take a siesta now!" or "Ay carumba!" while "Oy vey!" rings out when Jewish characters are killed. The game has a high level of background detail and various National Alliance signs and posters appear throughout while racist rock blares on the soundtrack. The game was developed using Genesis 3D, an open source game engine. Despite the game's title, which would imply a long, grand-scale "ethnic cleansing" campaign by part of the player, the game is actually very short (only 3 levels), and the alleged "racial fight" takes place in an area not bigger than a few city blocks, including the subway. The number of enemies faced (not more than a few dozens in each level) also makes the gameplay to appear more like a violent street riot, than an "ethnic cleansing". It's only their resistance and attack speed that makes the game difficult. The Anti-Defamation League publicized the existence of the game and unsuccessfully lobbied the developers of Genesis3D to change their licensing conditions to prohibit the use of the engine to develop racist games. They have also lobbied the Interactive Digital Software Association to encourage their members to adopt such policies.
It's possibly the first computer or video game that was conceived, developed and commercially released having explicitly racist content. Games with racist themes have existed before in freeware form and as mods for commercial games. Fan-made games killing Bin Laden or Hussein have led to criticism of major commercial games where there's implied-racism in that all enemies are Arabs or Mexicans or GTA: Vice City encourages players to "Kill all Haitians". Even popular rappers have given their likenesses to games which promote images of blacks as gang members and thugs. There have also been games made to counter that notion where pro-Arab games have Israelis as the enemy. So, game makers have found FPS games a useful propaganda tool to reruit young minds to their cause.

Extreme PaintBrawl 4 HeadGames / Activision [top]

Considering this is one of the worst game series ever, let's hope that this was the final one. After having changed the title of the last paintball game in the shooter series to Ultimate Paintball Challenge, this one resumed the infamous Extreme Paintbrawl title. In tournament mode you start with $1500 to recruit your team and equip them with guns (aka "markers" in paintball terminology), ammo, and cool shirts. As you progress through the game and win more matches, you can buy bigger and better guns and upgrade your teammates' stats. This new feature does add a bit of an RPG element to the paintball experience, but it certainly can't save this title. This game has 12 dull-looking levels ranging from a snowy winterscape to a theatre to an abandoned prison, only 1 character model for you and your enemies. It has dull in-game sound effects which it tries to hide with a loud electric guitar music score. Game types include capture the flag, eliminate, gauntlet, and center flag (which is CTF with one flag in the middle). AI is as bad as in previous games and should be called A.R. for Artificial Retardation. Also, in tournament mode, you have no way to order your computer teammates, they just act on their own.

FDNY FireFighter: American Hero Mekada / Activision Value Publishing, Inc. [top]

Endorsed by the New York City Fire Department, this game was designed to honor the brave heroes who served during the September 11th attacks on New York's Twin Towers in 2001. Similar to the previous game, In the Line of Duty: Firefighter, you play a fireman who must enter burning buildings to rescue victims trapped inside. Douse flames with high pressure water hoses and extinguishers. Hack away anything blocking your path with your axe. Improvements to the previous game include: a more realistic environment (smoldering ash, falling debris, billowing smoke, explosions), 12 new missions with more varied locations, and a "companion" firefighter who comes to your aid when rescuing victims. The interface has been enhanced to allow a more complete range of motion and view. Switching between first and third person view is possible like in the earlier game, and mouse or keyboard controls can be used.

Ghost Recon: Desert Siege Red Storm / Ubi Soft [top]

In this mission pack for Ghost Recon, it puts the specialty unit in hot North Africa. The conflict between Ethiopia and small (formerly ruled by Ethiopia) Eritrea flames up increasingly. In 8 missions one must stabilize the position. There are new weapons and opponents, a new specialist in the team and ... a higher degree of difficulty. In the multiplayer area there are 9 new weapons, 4 new multiplayer-maps and 2 new gameplay variations (Domination and Siege). Domination involves holding areas for a very long time or quickly recapturing lost areas and Siege is a kind of Assault - a team attacks and that other must defend. There is a zone into which an attacker must work into and for 5 seconds survive, then the round is won. The playing time has gotten very short, the missions offer nothing new essentially opposite the original game. The African surroundings offer less cover and are not that interesting. Altogether Desert Siege is not bad, it would have been more desirable to improve the game engine instead. Unfortunately, the opportunity to offer an interesting mission pack was missed by the developers.

Ghost Recon: Island Thunder Red Storm / Ubi Soft [top]

After Desert Siege, this is already the second addon to Ghost Recon. Island Thunder occurs in 2009 and Cuba is the focus. Fidel Castro is dead and Cuba is on the way to democracy. Elections await, however, there are also those who want to prevent this. The Ghost team is sent to Cuba to protect the elections. In principle everything remains as the original game: whoever knows Ghost Recon, should have no problems to play this. The graphics succeed well and are atmospheric as is the sound backdrop. There are 8 missions to complete successfully. Again the playing time is rather low. The missions are better, than with Desert Siege, however, weaker than in the original. Among the rest it is a matter of saving a fallen helicopter, protecting an electoral office in a town and of defending a beach against landing troops. In the multiplayer area there are new modes. Defend: One must hold a position and if the opponent reaches a certain point, one has lost. Cat and Mouse: One starts as a cat, one kills somebody then becomes the mouse (has nothing but a pistol) whoever kills most as a mouse wins. Behemoth: Whoever kills first becomes the Behemoth. If one kills as a Behemoth, one gets points. If one kills as a normal another normal, one gets points taken off. This signifies all must try to kill the Behemoth to gain the status and the points.

Global Operations Barking Dog Studios / Crave Entertainment, Electronic Arts [top]

Global Operations is based on the Lithtech engine of Monolith. The main focus is on-line battles very like those in Counter-Strike. There are different classes: Doctors, Recon, Sniper etc. and apart from one or another special ability they do not differ much, merely different weapons are available. In the game, however, (if one takes up another weapon) all classes with the weapons are equally good. Design-wise Global Operations is good and has good animations and weapons. In gameplay, nothing has occured to the developers as a staggering new idea. The levels are bigger than with CS, however, less oriented to teamplay (as in RTCW you respawn right after you die, so team tactics are complicated). The levels take place in all regions of the world (Antarctic to tropics, towns, ships ...) and are partially successful and very pretty, others look less good. Among the other objectives there is a matter of eliminating a drug baron or protect someone or there's something in the air to hunt. There is something a bit new... in Canada there is an exempt criminal which you try to bring to a certain point but nobody tries to kill him. Altogether Global Operations is not a bad game, however, it also is not a CS killer.

Gore: Ultimate Soldier 4D Rulers / DreamCatcher Interactive [top]

The world of the future is no place of peace. Power rules and the government tries to get the situation again under control in a contest to be the ultimate soldier. As a shooter of other players one is with certainty a candidate for the title. In the single player procedure one is informed by radio at first about rudimentary functions and receives in the later course of the play in this way instructions which do not vary nevertheless very much. The game renounces every kind of puzzle, one cannot open doors and also use no things. Over and over again one is supported by other soldiers, now and then one must protect NPC's. One finds weapons, ammunition, healthpacks and armour. Gore is a pure simple shooter in play, in the kind of Serious Sam, however it can compete neither designwise nor from sound here with that competitor. One selects between 8 game figures and has the usual weapons (pistol, chain saw, MG, shotguns (one with a protection shield on the 2th fire button, one with 4 runs), submachine guns and flamethrowers at your disposal. The surroundings are a bit barren, there are not many details and some texture repetition. For the singleplayer part I needed less than 5 hours to finish it. The multiplayer part disposes of the usual variants for a tactics part. The player's ability to move quickly and jump high is affected by the stamina system. Stamina is usually lost when running or jumping, but being injured by weapons also does a toll on it. How much stamina lost is affected by several factors, such as the player class being used or the weapon currently being held. If a player's stamina goes below zero, he will black out completely and fall to the ground unconscious for a short period of time. You can shoot health packs, fire extinguishers, gas tanks, and ammo boxes which will take out any enemies near them. There is also specific body armor gear such as leg armor, body armor, helmets, etc. that can be targeted with well placed shots causing more damage to unprotected parts. The character is free to climb trees, gutters, and vines. Whoever likes Serious Sam and likes frantic shooting at all costs and uncomplicated, Gore is an alternative if one accepts that this recent product is weaker than Serious Sam though. On the 4th of July 2008, Gore: Special Edition was released free to the public and new levels, weapons, graphical and gameplay tweaks, and an automatic patch updater.

Gun Runner AcidCrew Software / Xing Interactive [top]

In the Year 2035 a chemical plant near New York exploded, releasing toxic gases into the atmosphere, millions died. Afterward's people were forced to build enclosed areas of the city to live. These areas were based on leaders views of what they wanted; transporters were created to get people from one area to another. With a under staffed police force crime spread quickly. Some people form vigilante groups, hoping to solve the problem themselves, others believed this caused as many problems as it solved, but everyone wanted protection. The armed forces also sent in Elite Soldiers to help with the crime. Running guns from different areas became a profitable, but dangerous business. But all hope was not lost - it is rumored that several islands in the Pacific were untouched by the toxic gases. Yet few people have the resource to get to these areas, Agents who arrange for travel to the islands charge 100,000 credits. Like everyone else you want to get to the islands, running guns is your only hope. While Gun Runner does contain the FPS element, its main gameplay objective is the buying and selling of weapons. The player's objective is, not only to stay alive, but to buy the guns and sell them at a profit to gain the $100,000 needed to win the game.

Halloween 3D Jadeware [top]

This game was developed by a French guy still in high school and with the help of some of his friends released it as shareware with its own game engine. The game sets itself in a medieval context where the player is trapped inside an insane castle and has to fight his way through to survive. Many ridiculous creatures including bats, giant spiders and mummies have to be killed. There are objectives in each room such as a time limit or collecting letters to spell "Halloween" etc. There are some powerups also which slow enemies or make you jump really high. In 2006, the game was made freeware along with the source code.

Hidden & Dangerous Deluxe Illusion Softworks / Take 2 [top]

This is a remake of Hidden and Dangerous with an improved graphics engine as well as multiplayer support, some bug-fixes and includes the mission pack, Devil's Bridge. The update also consists of an included editor to modify the missions included, and slightly modified missions (new enemy patrol paths etc). The update did not affect gameplay. Hidden & Dangerous is still a matter of partially planning the actions of your SAS-team, and playing as one of those brave people to complete the missions as a team. The total of episodes is 9, which hold 32 missions. Your chance of survival are dictated by your ability to use the proper tactics at the right moment, not by being the fastest gun in town. A number of useful tactics are explained in the manual. It is now freeware...very nice indeed.

How to decensor game

Iron Storm 4X Studio / Wanadoo / DreamCatcher [top]

This is an alternate world which has turned out differently from this reality. The first World War has raged since decades and Iron Storm takes place in 1964. The protagonist knows nothing else than war, and has been born in a bunker. Germany is divided in two - one half fights for the Allies, the other for the Russians and Mongols. The weapon technology is as in 1964. At the beginning of the game one receives a special order, that leads at first by a vast defensive trench system, bunker system and tunnel system behind the hostile lines. If your own soldiers surround you at first, even more often the player is soon only by himself. On radio one has contact with the headquarters. There are some puzzles to solve and one must also creep sometimes which might irritate those who just want to shoot. The surroundings are many - from the bunkers and battle defenders which from World War 1 will remind you of, up to poison gas factories, labs, towns and a moving train. Besides, many levels are detailed and are designed luxuriously. Iron Storm also makes wide distances also fun, however, it has no brilliant moments. Almost no role is played by the interesting story time line. In the last third of the game (from the labs, followed by the train and the hostile headquarters), the puzzle numbers increase. Often one must go one and the same way 2 or 3 times which makes the game indeed longer, but also much worse. Such "puzzles" serve only to lengthen the game. However also without this lengthening, Iron Storm would have been more satisfactory. Also this stretching causes a loss in quality of the game. The end turns out disappointingly too. It almost calls for a sequel, however this should come really if it is hoped that the good parts are expanded and the weaknesses are eliminated.

James Bond 007: NightFire Gearbox Software / Electronic Arts [top]

In NightFire, one slips into the role of 007 (in cutscenes which are stored in the AVI format and of medium quality, one recognizes Pierce Brosnan's likeness). One must foil the plans of the villain Raphael Drake. In typical Bond manner, one is as 007 surrounded by pretty women (ostensibly all Secret Service. Q-Gadgets are also found of course: a wristwatch with integrated laser, a PDA with code cracker function, the cellphone with throw rope which lets Bond climb automatically upwards (if really a situation is found which enables the use of the tool permissible) or glasses with infrared which allow incoming calls. The use is always easy, because the program registers when the wristwatch or the code cracker should be used. There is some tactical creeping in the game, but Mr. Bond never gets his hands (or his clothers) dirty. Killed opponents cannot become further recreated (as tender agent Archer has no problem with corpses or unconscious persons being by others transported to less conspicuous places. The graphics in Nightfire are very simply done, completely inappropriate to a Bond adventure which usually has a lot of production values. The opponents are silly, the missions fairly entertaining, however, not dazzling. Nightfire belongs - in the very widespread - category of those games which do not shine with an immense playing depth. Even more than 10 hours a good player will not spend with in completing it. Altogether Bond is no failed shooter, however it clearly is a below-par shooter. In no area (graphics, mission design, gimmicks, action, sound) can Nightfire keep up with NOLF 2, the only plus may be that one may play James Bond. For similar play, one is better served in the close relative of NOLF 2.

It was Korea's first online FPS and was hugely popular. The game was known as Karma: Immortality in the US. It was shut down on July 31/2006.

Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault 2015 / Electronic Arts [top]

Near the Nazi's henchman you hunt in this game for 8 medallions (however, this is in the actual gameplay of low relevance, nonetheless the reason for the game title). The first missions lead to North Africa, where one prepares for operation "Torch". Moreover it is a matter of destroying different heavy bunkers and of hindering the German air force. While in North Africa, Medal Of Honor has multilayered missions. Constantly something new is offered or at least unique variations. Sometimes one is in a troop on the march and gets into an ambush, sometimes only in twos and sometimes in a jeep. The German soldiers speak good German. Blood is not shown neither in the English nor in the German game versions. This can be "remedied" thanks to Bloodpatches (this doesn't add to the fun of the game in my opinion, though). If one has started the operation Torch successfully it goes into snow-covered Norway and to the sabotage of a U-Boat. Afterwards, one is detached as an experienced and excellent soldier to take part in the invasion of Normandy during D-Day. Besides, near all young recruits without combat experience one might have some experienced soldiers. One lands on Omaha Beach and gets under the barrage of the German defense. Tank barriers as cover is of use as one works his way up with the his colleagues in the front. Not for free, Steven Spielberg oversaw the game and thus has told a similar story to that of James Ryan again. And as in the film one is moved, after gotten over the heroic deeds on Omaha Beach to the hinterland of France. At a storm of thunder and lightning you fight as sniper with other snipers in a small damaged france village, you steal a [german] tiger-tank and destroy another village (what was before in good shape). The close fights in Medal Of Honor are more intensive than with most other shooters, the atmosphere also better. In the last segment it is a matter in wintry Germany in the Fort Pains (great name ....) of destroying big oil reserves. If you succeed, it is not easy to flee the scene. Even if there are no final opponents, one has still to keep on a tight rein the time limit and to avoid traps. Especially the last few meters to the train cost me 10 attempts. If one succeeds to the train, the end is reached suddenly. No hero's celebration awaits you - simply the end and credits roll. There are some scripted events and readable mission-briefings in MOH, otherwise too little is offered in this area. There are no artificial final opponents, I find this positive and in general I like Medal Of Honor better than Return To Castle Wolfwnstein, because it is simply thicker in atmosphere, a little more diverse and has less irritating places. In the normal degree of difficulty I had at no place really appreciable problems, the hardest place was certainly the end, but this is OK. The sound backdrop is done well, although one could have polished the step noises still a little. One does a step and hears 2-3. Indeed this provides from time to time for special adrenalin pushes, but not for more realism. One also has to carry (as in Codename Outbreak) the feeling of a heavy weapon. It clatters and jangles always a little. Altogether MOH is a successful shooter which provides a lot of differences. Military courage is palpable in this case but the game is over in too short a time as in most games (the only exception to me there really and gloriously is Deus Ex). Good players will be able to complete it in the normal degree of difficulty probably in less than 10 hours.

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault - Spearhead 2015 / Electronic Arts [top]

Nine new single-player and 12 new multiplayer levels take you through Operation Overlord in Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, and the fall of Berlin. The parachute-behind-lines opening is as viscerally thrilling as the original game's Omaha beach landing, while new touches like firing large artillery and more computer-controlled squad mates ratchet up the thrills. Right at the beginning of this first mission pack for Medal Of Honor, one rushes from the sky and into a renewed tumultous fight. Clearly more scripted events are expected by the player and this causes you to lose your breath. Also the engine was reworked a little, it now offers more effects which hinder, however, clearly on the performance. This time with one has whole rows of trees on the surface of the earth to trek through. More often one fights in a team, however, you can spot over and over again the fact that certain companions do not die. In explosions and action Spearhead is much more intensive than the original, but is also much shorter in time and in the pleasure of playing it. Good players will have no problems in 4-5 hours to finish it. Also new multiplayer maps and weapons were given to the mission pack. A total of one good mission pack is agreeable, but the short playing time in singleplayer missions is a disappointment.

Mobile Forces Rage / Rage, Majesco [top]

This is a fun game that allows the driving of vehicles in a first-person shooter setting, something rarely done (Codename Eagle was the best one previously). Whereas the game has standard weapons, the use of 4 vehicles - the dune buggy, Humvee, troop transport and armored car make it innovative. The multiplayer modes are deathmatch, team deathmatch, a version of team deathmatch in which you only score points for killing the opposing team's captain, capture and hold, and four capture-the-flag variants. There is also a fun vehicle-based one called "trailer" where you have to find a Humvee strapped with a bomb and drive it into the enemy base. The 11 huge levels which include an urban ghetto, a polar outpost with an ice-bound submarine in the middle, and a pair of violently opposed logging camps are designed with two bases and a central hub area connected by a long, twisty landscape designed to be navigated by vehicles, plus a more direct shorter path that can only be traversed on foot. They are very nice graphically as the game uses the Unreal engine too. There are weapon balancing problems with only the rocket launcher as an effective way to damage vehicles but overall its a fun game with good bots available in single player as well.

In this dull unrealistic game, you are a Navy SEAL but the gameplay is run and shoot rather than using any tactics. The game's 10 levels are grouped into three missions taking place in Iraq, North Korea and Sarajevo. Though it uses the LithTech engine, the first levels are boring brown-colored desert levels and the rest mostly occur at night so you have to use the crappy night vision which just makes everything green. There is no recorded speech or music and the enemy A.I. is pretty bad too.

Neocron REAKKTOR.COM / CDV Software Entertainment [top]

Neocron, from a German developer, is commonly thought of as the one of world's first Cyberpunk MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game). It features action-oriented combat, similar to first-person shooters in a 3D environment. The player character may be chosen from four distinct classes. Available are genetically engineered super soldiers, ("GenTank"), the slight, yet dextrous and intelligent "Spy", the psionically (magic) focused and physically underpowered "Psi Monk" as well as the "Private Eye", commonly referred to as a Jack of All Trades for its ability to use aspects of all the other classes. Later the player may assign "skill points" (gained from experience) into specific abilities, e.g. Construction, Research, Droning, Rifles. The game takes place in a post-apocalyptic 28th century. Neocron is one of the three remaining cities on Earth created and developed from the ruins of World War III. This post-apocalyptic city has emerged after several hundred years of fighting, disease, pollution, torment and suffering, but has culminated in a strange discovery. A spacecraft with 3,000 settlers on a mission to the Irata colonies, once deemed destroyed, and ironically the wrongful cause of WWIII, finally re-establishes contact. This contact spoke of a paradise not seen on Earth for over 700 years. Hope that a life on the planet Irata III was present meant that the majority of the brave habitants of Neocron embarked on quest for a better life, leaving behind their lives and belongings in the hands of criminals, delinquents and ultimately corruption. The remaining dictator, Lioon Reza, whose genuine interest in the people of Neocron is minimal, currently governs the city. Huge powerful Companies and partly extremist political groups constitute the second tier of power. So what is left is a life in Neocron, and you choose to live it your own way. Partake in criminal activities, live peacefully, or become a spy. Choose to be a PSI-Monk with extraordinary powers or be a Tank Warrior, and go for some evil destruction. Since the inception and release of Neocron 2 Beyond the Dome in December 2004, it's no longer a playable game. It was run for a short time in conjunction with the Neocron 2 servers but was eventually removed as most players upgraded.

New World Order Termite Games / Strategy First, Inc. [top]

This Swedish developed game concerns the old conflict between police teams and terrorists. NWO is, on this occasion (like Counter-Strike, Global Operations and others) a straight multiplayer mostly, but contains also a singleplayer part which is a big joke that is without a way of changing the degree of difficulty. After the patch made to resolve this, the slow and not very pretty engine does allow for such things as shooting of lamps and further innovations. However, also with the patch New World order becomes a complete package but this is not a pioneering game. There are only 12 missions in New World Order, and each consists of just a tiny map, sprinkled with some enemies. Diverse environments include a mine, war zone, subway, drug lord villa, cargo ship, mansion, terrorist camp, tunnel, harbor, headquarters, pump facility, and the terrain of Sweden. Although some missions ask you to gather intelligence or rescue a hostage, in almost all cases, none of these side quests need to be accomplished; it's simpler to just kill every enemy in the level. At the start of each mission you can equip various weapons based on what rank you've attained. You're also given a weight limit of what you can carry - each gun, grenade, and clip you equip yourself with has a certain weight, and according to the game's documentation, the more you carry, the slower you move. Modes include Team Death Match, Team Escape, Plant the Bomb, Fallout, and Hostage Rescue. To me, I cannot think whom I could recommend this game to. Those with a notorious collector's nature will maybe get it, but with enthusiasm will play it probably nobody. A Deluxe version was released in 2005 that was patched to version 1.42 and included the bonus restaurant map.

No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy in H.A.R.M.'s Way Monolith / Fox Interactive, Sierra [top]

Monolith brings Cate Archer back in this game. Again one plays as the cool agent, must use different gadgets, and creep and shoot. As already with the first part, NOLF 2 serves in principle as a tool for showing off the new Lithtech engine. The first part could already receive very good reviews with most game magazines, but it was successful only partly in my opinion. In the end, it lacked in possibilities (indeed it's recommended, but for me in the game variety is barely found). The second part has made clear progress in this area. Certainly NOLF 2 also does not offer the freedom of a Deus Ex, however it moves still farther in this direction and away from the pure shooter. NOLF 2 has of a skill system, as with role playing games (or System Shock, Deus Ex and Sniper, which likewise were on the Lithtech engine based). Your full tasks involve reading communications, letters or books (as the spy manual which often lies around) and one receives additional points (also for the mini-missions which are not necessary to finish the main mission), and NOLF 2 excels in keeping the player happy in discovering new things. The action is, like already with the first part, as offbeat and witty as the characters also. Locations include cold regions in the USA, under water and in India (these missions are especially witty, not least because of the amusing Indian English slang). Numerous gags and action are related from the first part, so it helps to have played it to get all the references. The graphics are good, especially the faces are well done. NOLF 2 is a witty shooter with role playing aspects which is convincing in every area and presents the new Lithtech engine excellently. I like it much better than the first part and it's very worth buying.

Ocean City 1-3 [G] Motelsoft [top]

#1 In this small 3D role play action-adventure game, you slip into the role of the agent Darcy who works for the Ocean City health authority (short OCGB). At the beginning, you set off on a glider flight in Ocean City. All you know is that you have to find Malcom and you will get from him further instructions. By the completion of tasks, you collect experience points with which you can improve the characteristics of Agent Darcy. Also, the weapons can be modified with different modules. Try to help Darcy to succeed. And which role does the hammer company play in this story? #2 You receive a call from an old friend, Joe, who asks to meet, since he is into some difficulties. However, he is in the Lusttower, which lies in a restricted area, and you cannot enter without permission of the government authority. By completing activities, you collect experience points, modules and Credits. With experience points, you can improve the characteristics of Darcy. The modules serve to modify weapons and the Credits you can use for the acquisition of ammunition and medicine. The correct tactical procedures and the stats of Darcy will decide on your success. #3: Die Stadt der Verdammten (2003) Some missions are optional but others must be fulfilled to get ahead. The orders are characterized accordingly in the order overview. Some orders will demand everything from you and will place before you some mystery. By simply "shooting away", you will not get ahead. Many persons cannot be shot at all. Should you try it, nevertheless a red diagonal bar appears in the crosshairs. The first order leads you to Ganter of the OCGB. It's reported that strange things are going on in the city and someone is distributing forbidden substances to the people causing them to totally flip out. Who is behind this? Is it the Medizit people, the Talossa followers or even the Hammer company?

Operation Flashpoint Addon: Planet Of War X-Media [top]

Another unofficial addon from the makers of the Between The Lines addon. This time it's a statregic mod that allows you to train your own troops, as well as research new technologies and vehicles. You can build more then 20 different buildings with specific functions - e.g.factories, barracks, bunkers. Then plan your way of attacking another base whether it's by a quick attack or sit back and defend your own base and wait to build up better resources for your attack.

Operation Flashpoint: Resistance Bohemia Interactive / Codemasters [top]

The action in Resistance takes place some years before Operation Flashpoint. In the center stands the small island Nogova which is attacked one day by the general Guba. One slips into the role of the war-tired war veteran Victor Troska. When Troska decides, finally, to help the suppressed occupants, one must scuffle with bad equipment and weapons, as well as little ammunition. Because the island Nogova maintains no army of its own, one has to steal the weapons of the enemy. This is not so easy, nevertheless, to succeed in doing. You get a new 20-mission campaign, five stand-alone missions, nine multiplayer missions, new vehicles, new weapons, and a huge new island on which to battle. The missions are not linear, some decisions during the fight have on following events an impact, however, the action will continue over and over again. Even if it doesn't sound like it, the story is very good around Victor Troska and exciting. It distances itself from the usual "shoot now ask questions later" type of story. The story is told through the same kind of lengthy in-engine cutscenes with some dramatic twists and bloody surprises. The graphics with Resistance were improved, but is still not pretty. Whoever was hoping for an Operation Flashpoint first-class extension might agree here. For newcomers, Resistance is not recommended, because the degree of difficulty is very high. The warehouses in the game are filled only with traps.

Quest for Hussein Petrilla Entertainment [top]

This 6-level standalone game using the Build engine was made by the same author as Quest For Al-Qa'eda but this time it wasn't free but cost $3.95 although now it's freely available. Iraq is in ruins, a vast desert wasteland populated by stoic camels and abandoned buildings adorned with murals of Saddam. Hussein borrows a lot from the classic Platoon TC but was no doubt done in a hurry and has a lot less variety. Each level should take no more than 3-4 minutes. There is only one enemy type and it keeps chanting the same "hamamamama" litany all the time (it's funny the first time you hear it but after that it gets annoying).

Realm Wars Realm Wars Development Team [top]

Realm Wars is a community project that was developed with the use of the popular Torque Game Engine. The game itself is a fantasy themed first person style action game that emphasises massive team combat on an epic scale. Players can choose a race, customize your abilities and your appearance with an impressive array of weapons, armor and items - then prepare for battle. Become a master of ranged or close quarters weapons as you join into a vast world of simple team based skirmishes, controlled battles, or epic wars. Battlegrounds are sized according to the number of players, and can be different every time, or, in some cases, they are created by level builders, the live team, or through the use of DM level creation tools. There is no "grunting" or leveling in Realm Wars, rather, play is action based, and more reliant on the skills and actions of the player than on random dice rolls, hit points, and character levels. As the player progresses, his character’s community recognition increases, he is honored with medals and medallions, and rewarded with an increasing ability to modify the look of his armor and weapons.

Revolution FunLabs / Activision Value [top]

This time the low-budget developer FunLabs produced a shooter with SF ambience. In the future a genetic revolution takes place by genetic manipulation. Daily life for all people is to be armed themselves genetically or technically. And sometimes the question is whether people are using technology or is the technology using people. One plays a normal janitor of a big firm. One learns about the "New Breed" program which should "improve" the whole of humanity. However, there is also an underground organization which wants to preserve people in their natural form. They contact the player and want you to fight for them against the manipulation. However, the firm has other designs. You are the first person of the new breed and are disposed of special abilities, however, are you still human? The FunLabs Chameleon engine made in-house offers absolutely considerable graphics as seen in the numerous screenshots. However, the game is a poor copy of Half-Life, your first weapon starting out as a crowbar also. In the first third of the game, you go through actual missions a janitor would do like shooting rats or wandering around various pipes. The cutscenes are laughable and dialogue hard to make sense of. The game must be patched before playing due to a unpassable bug in the shipped game.

Serious Sam: The Second Encounter Croteam / Gathering Of Developers [top]

Only about 8 months after the first, Croteam came out with this second part. The engine was improved (now can show among other things vast grass sceneries). Some new opponents, totally new sceneries and some new weapons are available. Especially overdue - and very well-done - the Sniper Gun is useable in some scenes to very good effect, and also the flamethrower is also cool. Otherwise everything remains as in the first game: One hurls himself against gigantic mammoth hordes. In the Mayan empire it starts off, afterwards in the Far East and at the end in medieval Europe (with the best of all successful music). Altogether more change is offered than in the 1st part and thereby plays itself more pleasantly. The scenarios differ completely and offer something for the eye. There are some traps and a few changes. In a Far East level one gets to a very famous place, unfortunately, it wasn't fully used (thouigh it pleased me). By the end "Serious Sam - The Second Encounter" has an awesome level of massacre. In the Cathedral level many corpses really pave the way for the player. There is also time to gaze in wonder at extremely cool weather effects which I haven't yet experienced so far in a shooter. Whoever liked the first part will have even more fun with this one. In the play system nothing has changed, however, more change is offered in surroundings, opponents and weapons. Whoever likes a fun lighthearted shooter is well served with this.

Shadow Force : Razor Unit / Delta Ops : Army Special Forces Fun Labs / Activision [top]

This is from the makers of the much better Secret Service game. Players have 10 of the military's most advanced weapons at your disposal and engage in 10 tactical Counter Terrorism Missions to find and destroy leaders of terrorist cells. In the main mission mode, players use stealth to sneak by their enemies (or kill them silently) or call in special "Stinger Missiles" for reinforcements. In addition to single-player gameplay, the game also features full multiplayer combat compatibility via LAN and Internet: Deathmatch, Survival, Capture the Flag and Team Deathmatch. After an entirely needless training session, the game drops you into the desert for 10 levels of bad enemy AI, ugly graphics, and, above all, very boring gameplay. While the game gives you objectives to complete, none of them are interesting enough to cut through the game's problems. The only nice thing is the real world physics engine it uses that enables many items to be destroyed by bullets. The game was re-released under a different name, Delta Ops, but with little changed except for a multiplayer game server browser and lobby but it will be impossible to find anyone to play this dull game with.

Sniper: Path of Vengeance Mirage Media / Xciat Interactive [top]

Sniper is built on the Lithtech engine of Monolith. One plays the contract killer Dominick. At the beginning, one can configure his player with 30 points distributable to different weapon abilities (pistol, MP, shotgun, etc.) and on health and stamina like in a role playing game. In your first mission you have to assasinate a man who is guarded by 4 policemen. After completion, you go back to the car, and in a cutscene you are caught by the police, put under by drugs and awaken in prison. Straight away you seek to escape. Subsequently you improve your abilities, the values rise at every meeting with a weapon directly for the weapon. With certain point figures, you reach a new level and can distribute these points again freely. One can live on the basis of healthpacks and drinks refreshen and alcohol will add a lot of lives but also with side effects which are connected but which pass after a certain time again. There are also syringes which bring for a short time health and stamina gains. Later, however, they will again fall back. There is also a pain tolerant which makes the player with wounds less susceptible. The graphics are satisfactory, however it sets no standards. Unfortunately, the play lacks any depth (as the role play aspects would let you expect) and creativity. It develops into a normal shooter revenge story that can be well played through in about 5-6 hours. The opponents are rather silly, indeed there is a silencer-weapon, however, it is not required because the opponents do not react to shots in your surroundings often. The version 1.01 tested by me contained some bugs, however, it could be played through and was absolutely entertaining.

Soldier of Fortune 2: Double Helix RavenSoftware / Activision [top]

Again one slips into the role of John Mullins (this time without the schnauzer) and works for the shop. The theme of the sequel is germ warfare, as the mercenary Mullins and his new partner Madeline Taylor travel to Colombia to investigate a viral outbreak in a small town, only to link it to a shadowy organization called Prometheus. The virus, called Romulus, is followed by a computer virus called Remus which is programmed to delete files on any computer in the world. It has over 55 levels with an all-new Random Mission Generator mode and goes to among other places as Prague, Hong Kong, Colombia and Jordan. The programmers licensed the Q3 team arena engine. There should be only "real" weapons. The damage model Ghoul from first game comes again (of course improved with 36 damage zones along with 16 dismemberment zones). There are increased features such as vehicles or helicopters (however one can use only the weapons, they are not moveable). At beginning one must get out a scientist from Prague. The opponents talk in their respective national languages. The enemy A.I. was significantly upgraded from the original title, and fires from cover and uses squad-based tactics rather than simply standing still or charging straight at the player.

New features in the Gold Edition include new Demolition game type, 11 new maps, new SIG 552 Rifle, MP5SD weapon, Silver Talon Pistol and PunkBuster for Anti-Cheat.

Star Wars: Jedi Knight II - Jedi Outcast Raven / LucasArts [top]

Kyle Katarn wants to be no more a Jedi and instead wants to go on as a soldier. With an at first harmless-seeming order which he accepts together with his friend Jan Ors, he gets into a whirlpool of events... Outcast is based on a modified Q3 engine which doesn't offer brilliant graphics but does have excellent opponent's animations. At first one plays without Jedi abilities, they are received only later and then they are much better (especially the light sword) than in the first games to carry. The Imperial troops are well done, and the enemies are in plentiful supply. Star Wars fans will be pleased again, nevertheless I am not able to get much enjoyment out of this Jedi Knight game. There are gigantic levels with many opponents, but barely any atmosphere. For example: One comes to a bar, speaks with the barkeeper and after an cutscene all the clients become villains. Afterwards one fights through on the roofs of the town. Also here one meets no civilians, only enemies. Positively there is the appearance of Luke Skywalker, who appears not only in cutscenes but later also actively fights. By the end there are bigger battles in the Jedi school. Also here Outcast is somewhat fun but there are vast dull sections of shooter sequences. This is more for Star Wars fans, for the others there are better alternatives. In April 2013, Raven Software released the source code of the game under GNU GPL v2 license.

Sum Of All Fears, The Red Storm / Ubi Soft [top]

This is a good tactical shooter based on the Tom Clancy film with Ben Affleck and Morgan Freeman and it uses the Ghost Recon game engine. There are 11 single-player maps, plus seven multiplayer maps in places like a Middle Eastern military base, an underground network of caves and sewers, an office building, a warehouse, and a richly furnished mansion. The game has simplified tactics compared to Ghost Recon. You choose what weapons you want to use in each mission and can order your teammates into two formations, have them follow you or stay in one place, and have them approach closed doors and open, clear, or toss a grenade through them. Your teammates are better with smaller groups of enemies, and sometimes other government groups will join in with your group causing some chaotic scenes. There's skirmish modes in the sp levels available with more enemies or you can play without a team too. There are also various fun multiplayer modes like last man standing, team deathmatch, and cooperative hostage rescue.

Tactical Ops: Assault on Terror Kamehan Studios / MicroProse [top]

Tactical Ops already existed since 2000 as an Unreal Tournament mod. Now it's published, in addition, as an independent game that doesn't need UT. The game itself is similar to CS. Terrorists and counter-terrorists fight against themselves. Among the rest, hostages must be rescued, bombs must be laid and documents or weapons stolen. The weapons are partially different (like with CS) depending on the class of player you choose. One receives money for killed opponents or achieved purposes (the money of the opponents lies in bank note bundles with the corpses and must be taken up). T.O. is playable with bots also which are OK, but more often also sometimes get stuck. The freely downloadable mod version still counts as a beta, and also has less maps. Designwise, T.O. lies before CS, but also here I like the animations less than with CS. Otherwise it offers interesting levels which are not too big (time limit mostly 4 minutes), many weapons and possibilities. Multiplayer fans should go and give it a try. With the bots, singleplayer is playable, but does not measure up to the muliplayer game.

U.S. Most Wanted: Nowhere to Hide FunLabs / Activision Value [top]

In U.S. Most Wanted, from the low budget specialist FunLabs you take over the role of Randall Joyce, an ex-anti-terror specialist who went nevertheless not to retirement, but rather to taking the law into his own hands because he was frustrated about the obstacles of laws. He is supported by his old friends who still work furthermore in the different anti-terror organizations. From now on one goes himself to hunt criminals and dictators in locations around the world, including Mexico City and Eastern Europe. You track down: members of a lost terrorist network, the Kingpin of a Mexican kidnapping ring, and war criminals among others. You can play from both first- and third-person perspectives and the game features a realistic damage model indicated by an on-screen silhouette and depending on where you get hit, it will impact gameplay (i.e. being hit in the leg will slow you down). At your disposal is a large weapons arsenal, from pick-locks and knives to shoulder-launched missiles and grenades. Using a silencer or gun-mounted flashlight will help you locate and dispatch your targets but at the cost of less shooting accuracy and revealing your location to the enemy, respectively. You can move in 3 ways: stealth, jogging, or sprinting. You can also join multiplayer games for up to eight people in modes such as Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and "Most Wanted".

UnderAsh is a shooting game based on true stories of a Palestinian youngster from Jerusalem, and how the burning situation in the occupied territories forced him to grip a stone and defend him self during the first "intifada" uprising from 1989 to 1995. The project was developed between 1999 and 2001 by a team of 5 persons however, the first commercial Arabic game was a success the day it hit the markets. It also includes an episode about a suicide bomber, which has provoked harsh criticism from Israel. A young woman leaves her children with relatives before detonating a grenade amidst a group of Israeli soldiers, who, earlier in the game, had murdered her husband in cold blood.

Unreal Tournament 2003 Digital Extremes, Epic Games / Infogrames [top]

In September, we witnessed the comeback of the top online FPS franchise -- Unreal Tournament 2003, being an extended and updated port of the XBOX hit Unreal Championship, but with mixed reactions. Graphics engine was once more top-notch, but unkept promises such as vehicular combat and notable differences in gameplay balance made it impossible for UT2003 to achieve the success and universal acclaim the original UT had. UT2003 offers strong graphics, quick gameplay and new play variations. Here the "Bombing Run" is to be most recommended of the new modes. In 2 teams one tries to shoot a bomb in the opposing gate or jump through it. Shooting it brings 3 points, 7 for jumping, similar to football. The player who has the bomb cannot shoot, must be covered by his players or throw the bomb, however to an enemy he becomes an easy victim as he cannot shoot. Then one can take from the dead person the bomb again and sprint farther. UT2003 offers partially big levels, with plant growth. The player's models are very detailed, the sound and the music as well. As in the first part one can add of course also to the multiplayer battles bots in any strength. Nevertheless, the levels are filled - in my opinion - less than in the first game (require maybe even more practise - indeed, I see this as not necessarily an advantage). In the singleplayer procedure one can put together your own team and from time to time one may exchange one of his players for another. The bots are clever and a real support, also you can alter character values in each case and the different qualities become also apparent in the game. Unfortunately, the team procedures were changed and the ability also to steal from other teams their player. Thus UT2003 in the singleplayer procedure is a rather short pleasure, serves to get to know the level but is not really much enjoyment. This 2nd Unreal Tournament game offers players quick multiplayer action in variable good to very good entertainment, and design improvements but is no evolution of the genre.

US Special Forces: Team Factor 7FX / Crave Entertainment, Singularity Software [top]

This is a dull team-based game from a Czech developer with outdated-looking graphics. It lets you play on one of three teams as one of four character classes: the sniper, the machine-gun-toting soldier, the heavy-weapon specialist, and the support scout. There are 22 maps with different objectives like having to hack into computers, capture briefcases full of intelligence documents, or simply wipe out opposing teams. Though the maps have a surprising amount of variety in diverse global locales such as the Hoover Dam, Mekong Delta, and Russian steppes, including jungle, desert, and swamp areas, the game generally has simple level geometry (the buildings in many of the game's city levels aren't much more than large, simply textured rectangles), stiff character animation, and poor special effects. An arsenal of more than 50 firearms and items is available in three modes of play: arcade, realistic or custom. Unlike many team-based shooters, it pits three opposing forces (blue, red, and black) against one another in the missions. Your team has decent A.I. but the lack of sounds and music in the game also make it boring. There are no multiplayer modes either.

Ace Lightning Gamezlab / BBC Multimedia [top]

This third-person action-adventure game is based on a BBC tv series and you play as the hero, Ace Lightning, who is the most valiant of the Lightning Knights. Your goal is to defeat your arch-enemy Lord Fear and send him and his gang back to prison in the sixth dimension. In order to do this, you must first collect all the pieces of the magical Amulet of Zoar, which he has hidden throughout the Carnival of Doom, a surreal and spooky place. You must make your way through its four zones - the Ghost Town, Fun Park, Circus and House of Horror. In each zone you must use your weapons to dispatch enemies such as evil clowns and zombies through different levels before coming face to face with the bosses of each zone - the characters Lady Illusion, Pigface, Googler and Dirty Rat from the tv series. Ace must find the required number of Doom Dimes to allow him to access the amulet piece and bypass other obstacles, and there are power ups to be found like the Shield of Justice which makes Ace invincible, and special boots that let him perform a double jump manuever. Only after you have all the parts of the Amulet will you meet the evil Lord Fear in a final battle.

Armobiles is a mixture between racing and shooting game. The player uses one of six cars to solve the about 70 missions that the game offers. The cars are equipped with guns which can be used to shoot enemies. The missions themselves range from regular races from checkpoint races to driving to a certain point and avoiding getting killed on the way. The game also uses different scenarios, e.g. a submarine base, a desert or a snow landscape.

Bandits: Phoenix Rising GRIN / PAN Vision / Tri Synergy [top]

Bandits is a game like Mad Max in the future where your cannon mounted combat car takes you on an adventure across green fields, desert canyons and deep snow, bombing and blasting all sorts of enemies and cargo trucks, defending your gang and your glory. In charge of the action are the notorious leaders of the Wolfpack gang, Fennec and Rewdalf. You take control of the action while Fennec & Rewdalf do the talking - they do a lot of that. When you join the action you will be in for over 22 missions ranging from car duels, train robberies and storming of trade outposts to battling it out with hordes of enemies with only your trusted cannons and grenade launchers for companions. There's offensive driving from points A to B, the running defense of friendly vehicles, racing, and the occasional oddball surprise mission, such as one in which you man a stationary turret. Most of the missions start at a screen where you can choose a chassis (light, medium, or heavy) and then stock it with a variety of weapons. Every vehicle's primary gun is a rotating turret that can fire in all directions.

Betty Bad WildTangent [top]

This is a simple arcade shooter taking place in a series of long, twisting tubes that the heroine you play must navigate on foot as waves of attackers approach from ahead. You can walk all along the inside of the cylindrical environments, which appear to rotate around your generally fixed position. You have to swim in one level and walk on the outside of the tube in another but they are mostly similar. Along the way you shoot eight varieties of bugs that vary in size, toughness, and attack pattern, and there are occasional environmental hazards that must be destroyed or jumped over. It's sort of a cross between Tomb Raider and the classic arcade game Tempest. It's a short game too with only 9 levels.

Fowl have run afoul of this less-than-serious hunting sim. Players need to shoot down crazy birds before their madness spreads. According to story of Birdie Shoot, a number of birds have been infected by a strange virus that is driving them wacky. They need to be contained, through the use of a handy "anaesthetization gun," before their malady can be spread. The game features six types of birds, including ducks, chicken, doves, and storks, and the action takes place in four different environmental settings - jungle, sea, forest and arctic settings. Funny sound effects and cartoonish graphics emphasize the playful nature of the game. Up to four players can compete in a Tournament mode.

Crimsonland 10tons Ltd. / Reflexive Entertainment Inc. [top]

This is a top-down shooter in which you must defend yourself against a large horde of aliens. After a large amount of kills, your character will gain a perk, such as faster reloading, extra speed, or some more outrageous ones. There are four modes of play. Quest lets you play through several missions to unlock new weapons and perks in the Rush and Survival modes. Rush requires you to survive a fast, endless horde of aliens without any perks (it's hard to survive for more than 20 seconds). Survival is similar, except more forgiving: you play for points, not time, and you can pick up other weapons and gain perks against a slower horde. There is also the "Type-O Shooter" mode, in which you type out tricky words and odd combinations thereof to shoot slowly advancing aliens. Initially, it was a free game up to v1.40, and then was picked up for sale as a retail game in 2003 with better graphics, more options, more game modes, more weapons, more enemies, more landscape options and levels.

Des Blood 4: Lost Alone [J] Illusion Software [top]

In "Des Blood 4", we encounter what is probably the most perfect and refined incarnation of the series. Before you go and compare this game to "mainstream" games and complain about its obvious flaws, think of this: everything else beside sex scenes is actually a bonus here. "Des Blood 4" doesn't strive to be the perfect shooter/adventure.
The basic gameplay here is quite simple. You navigate the playable character (mostly Esk) through large 3D dungeon-like locations. In nearly every dungeon, there are some easy puzzles to solve.
While exploring the dungeons, you'll encounter enemies, and fight them in traditional Des Blood fashion. The enemies appear at set points - not randomly, as some people might think. When enemies are eliminated, you can run around through the same location again; the enemies won't respawn. Whenever you "step on a trigger" in such a set location, you are taken to a separate battle screen. You can then aim with your mouse and shoot.

Dino Crisis 2 Capcom [top]

This sequel to the original popular game is more action-oriented this time around. You can play as either Dylan, a tough soldier guy, or Regina, star of the first game, who go to a military base, a test facility, and a nearby town which have completely disappeared after a test of the mysterious third energy, and in their place is a massive jungle. For every dinosaur you kill, you earn points that you can later use for the purchase of ammo, health kits, and other items that you may need to progress. You switch from one character to the other in the game and each has their strengths and weaknesses. Though the voices, music and characters are good, the background graphics are dull and interactive objects really stand out as a result. The story is a bit dull too and the game is short.

Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project Sunstorm / Arush [top]

This is a fun side-scrolling shooter with modern 3D effects and returns Duke Nukem to his roots as the very first 2 games he starred in were sidescrollers. It has eight episodes that consist of three levels each. Your goal is to stop a madman named Mech Morphix, who is infecting New York City with a radioactive substance that causes roaches, rats, and alligators to change into huge, weapon-wielding beasts plus there are some interesting end bosses. Duke's old adversaries, the pig cops, also appear. The huge multiple-path levels include the roofs of skyscrapers, streets of Chinatown, subway tunnels, a sewer, a tanker, and a futuristic factory, before finally ending up on a space station. There are plenty of rewards, power-ups, and secret areas to explore, plus it's fun to try and find the 10 "nuke" symbols in each level which increase your maximum health and amount of ammo you can carry. The are various weapons including a fun GLOPP gun which counteracts the effects of mutation on enemies, reducing them to their original form, which can then be squashed with your foot. There are a few gameplay glitches but the game is good to look at and fun to play.

Gigantic Gear [J] G-Cube [top]

This is an excellent (albeit short) freeware giant robot action game from Japan. Aside from sporting excellent 3D graphics, the game offers a few innovative features that set it apart from other “shoot everything in sight” games. The best feature is the ability to assemble your killer ‘mech from choosing various parts: legs, weapons, etc., and see them in action. There are only 3 levels in the game, but they are quite large. The on-screen radar makes it easy to keep track of where the enemies are, and you can switch weapons during the game. If you enjoy giant robot games or action games in general, Gigantic Gear is well worth your time. Overall, another great Japanese freeware gem that boast very high production value. The game is in Japanese, but the shoot-all-in-sight gameplay makes language a bit redundant

Grand Theft Auto 3 DMA Design, Rockstar / Take 2 [top]

If the anarchist Grand Theft Auto 1 and 2 played themselves from a bird's-eye view, the third game appears in a new garment, namely of the pursuer's perspective. Taken for a ride by your accomplice, you land in Liberty City's jail, but during the transportation in the prison of a coprisoner he escapes and you seize the opportunity to breathe also the air of freedom. You disappear and quickly find orders from different criminal's organizations. Liberty City is a town of special freedom. you position yourself before approaching cars which stop promptly and pull the driver from the vehicle and speed away. Luckily the townsfolk do not learn, because one can do this in the course of the game some hundred times. Also you can run down passers-by sometime (who get up now and then again, but from time to time also lie deadly still). Orders vary from errands up to mass murder (once one must kill 25 triad members on foot with a flamethrower). One cannot die - either one is arrested and gets free some hours later again or, one lands in the hospital (one loses merely the weapons and must begin the mission from the start but you can do this as often as one wants). Liberty city is an immense town and GTA 3 offers to the player a lot of possibilities to explore it. Some parked vehicles offer special missions, also vouchers lie around in many places (radios (Live), police stars (lowers the search level), drug packages (brings money) which are a matter of finding them first. One should also know shortcuts, they facilitate successful finishing of the missions which have very often time limits. If one is in the car on the way one can play different radio stations, also your own music pieces (in the MP3 format) can be played on your own transmitter. GTA 3 by its size and ability to create wealth for your character has for discovery-happy players a certain addictive potential. Things always new can be discovered and the story offers some astonishing pieces. Despite the fact that one also is more often driving in the game I have added it in our game list, even if the 3D shooter part is clearly less than 20% because the game is very worth playing.

Hitman 2: Silent Assassin IO Interactive / Eidos Interactive [top]

Again one slips into the role of hitman 47. The Danish developer Io Interactive managed with Hitman to have an unexpected success and in the 2nd part the developers (partially) build on it. There is more freedom of action than with the first part but unfortunately also a much weaker story. The mentor of our hero - father Vittorio was kidnapped and 47 sets out to save him. On this occasion, it is a matter mostly of liquidating the object person, otherwise there is a matter of creeping a lot and of keeping a lookout for others. The levels are very big and can confuse, but they are less straight-forward and offer several possible solutions. One can knock people out and slip into their clothes. Sometimes one must get by without weapons (when in disguise or to avoid detectors). The creeping component is similar to NOLF 1 and 2, however not as good as in Thief. Sometimes it is easier to shoot, than to creep. Depending on your stealthiness, you are given a rating upon completing a mission. Going trigger-happy on everyone will result in being called a "Mass Murderer", while only the most patient and skilled players will manage to receive the "Silent Assassin" rating, which generally involves stealthily eliminating the target without raising any suspicion. Hitman 2 is a successful continuation which has more fun than part 1. For people who also like to think as well as shoot, Hitman 2 is recommended but can frustrate also a little on account of the complexity and limited save function.

Incoming Forces Rage Software / Hip Interactive [top]

This is the sequel to Incoming and is set 20 years after the original; Earth has now discovered the secret of sustainable long distance space travel. Their forces are gathered and seeking to destroy all hostile planets, in particular four alien worlds in a small distant galaxy that you must defend. This time you're the aliens warding off humans who are still evidently upset about the events in part one. You'll pilot an array of ground and air vehicles while shooting at enemy air and ground vehicles. The game is spread across 16 long missions. Each mission is broken into a linear series of five or six secondary tasks such as escorting friendly vehicles, defending installations, and defeating groups of attackers. You'll occasionally have more unusual goals, such as defending equipment or destroying an opponent's shields without actually destroying its ship, but these are rare. The vehicles include a few variations of fighter jets, artillery tanks, hovertanks, and turrets. The plane control is decent enough, but the tanks seem awkward and sluggish, and they make turning and firing a chore in the heat of battle. Occasionally, you'll have wingmen you can issue basic orders to. It's not an innovative feature, but the presence of autonomous friendly units on the battlefield provides a real sense that you're in the middle of a pitched fight between two actual forces.

Mafia (The City of Lost Heaven) Illusion Softworks/ Take 2 [top]

The story is told from the year 1938 in flashbacks. Thommy Angelo tells in a small restaurant to a police chief his Mafia biography. It begins in 1932 in the town Lost Heaven and is very linear but offers an exciting story of murder, betrayal, loves and friendship. The missions are eventful, from burglary through contract killing (attempts with the sniper's gun, public execution in a swimming pool and bomb attempts) up to "bodyguard missions". Unfortunately, Mafia allows no game saves whenever you want - this is really irritating only in 2 missions (with a lot of opponents and rather long time without saving possibility). Sometimes also if one goes too impatiently through the town all of a sudden the police are on the player. Positively you can use cruise control which if activated, no police patrol will be angry. Also the odometer with every car is a nice (even if playfully not relevant) gimmick. Play view is third-person behind view and takes place clearly more on foot than in GTA 3. Design-wise the game makes a good impression (using a modified Hidden & Dangerous 2 engine) as does the sound also. The music, however, offers (especially in the vehicles) little variety. 20 missions lead to quite different areas with a lot of different orders and surprises. Boredom does not arise. The town Lost Heaven offers in PC action games to date an unequalled 30s atmosphere. In German there is very good voice synchronisation especially that of Thommy's pal Paulie stands out. Nevertheless, it concerns the unmistakable voiceover of Joe Pesci (very much suitable to the character of Paulie which resembles his roles in Goodfellas and Casino). Unfortunately, Mafia offers no freedom of action. Thus one must go in a mission to steal afterwards boxes from the harbour depot. The foreman in the place goes on the toilet. To rush though there brings nothing, with the last box taken the foreman appears again and gives alarm. Also follow and knock him out brings no change because the guards are still alarmed... Also there is only one degree of difficulty which makes life for newcomers not easy. Whoever does not mind the lack of save game option and the low freedom of action should find it a strong game with great action and story structure. It's definitely worth buying at a budget price.

Operation Blockade Screaming Games / Infogrames [top]

This is a budget-priced turret shooter in which you control a stationary gun turret and rotate 360 degrees to shoot at oncoming enemies. This simple arcade-type shooter game takes place in a fictitious World War II-era conflict in which you play as a lone soldier in a gun turret who must shoot down WWII biplane dogfighters, bombers, battleships, transport ships, and infantry soldiers who will dig in and launch mortars at you, and just about all of these enemies are modeled surprisingly well and look authentic. Missions can take place at dawn, in the afternoon, dusk, and at night, so the sky will be lit by either sunlight or moonlight that reflects off the game's good-looking animated oceans and clouds. It also has some very good sound effects and even makes use of 3D sound to produce a Doppler effect as enemy planes strafe past you, off into the distance. You have 3 regular weapons: a light machine gun for use against infantry, a medium machine gun for use against small boats and aircraft that you'll rely on the most, and a cannon for use against larger boats though it doesn't really have a useful gun sight that you can use to accurately target your enemies. You'll also sometimes have access to a fourth weapon, grenades, which you can toss a short distance toward your enemies, as well as a few different kinds of "bomb" attacks, like air strikes. You can hit larger targets, such as cruisers and aircraft carriers, to "salvage ammo and medical supplies," which instantly heals damage you've taken and replenishes your ammunition in true arcade-game fashion. There's also a co-op multiplayer mode.

Project Nomads Radon Labs / CDV Software Entertainment [top]

This game is a combo of various genres set in a strange world of floating islands and evil insects. You choose one of three characters--John, Susie, or Goliath--and then set out to find the other two who are captured. You start on an island base and collect artifacts that let you construct buildings on your island. There are buildings that generate energy, hangars that produce bombers and fighters, and turrets that defend you from enemy units. These real-time strategy elements though are fairly basic and easy. You get cannons and guided missiles which will work well automatically as well as fighters and bombers (with weaker A.I.) though you can control any of these yourself. The on-foot missions involve shooting the insects (with weapons or magic bolts) which leave poisonous clouds in death, interrupted by the occasional jumps over small chasms. The gameplay gets repetitive after awhile but the good graphics and unique setting make it fun for awhile.

Rayman Arena / Rayman M Ubi Soft Entertainment [top]

This mediocre Rayman game has him and 3 other characters in a foot race through various levels plus also a combat section in arenas all played in third-person view. In the racing part of the game you have to run 3 obstacle filled laps of a course. You'll have to jump over and around barriers, climb up walls, surf down waterways, and do some fast platform jumping to come in first place. After you run these several times though, there's no excitement left to them. The combat part is also very simplistic with 4 other foes and you have to collect 5 glowing spheres before your opponents. There are various weapons including a flamethrower (!) and ice beam. The game has a multiplayer component in the form of two-player split-screen play and four-player gaming over a LAN. The cartoony graphics are ok but the game shows it was a console port with its clunky interface and controls not really conceived for the pc. Rayman Arena only differs from Rayman M in very minor ways, only edited in the intro movie, load screens, etc.

Sharp Shooter Nemosoft [top]

Trapped in a room, metal spheres flying around you, that's what the game is all about. It puts up to four players into a battle royal in a number of colorful and complex environments. Using a special weapon that fires spherical metal projectiles players must destroy spheres from both the game and other players or be destroyed by them. It seems inspired by the Tron disc battles.

Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams / Silent Hill 2: Director's Cut Creature Labs / Konami [top]

This is a very scary sequel to the popular Playstation game Silent Hill which was never ported to the pc. The game starts when you get a letter from your dead wife and you go to the creepy town of Silent Hill to investigate. As you go about talking to characters and solving puzzles you end up meeting some of the most scary monsters ever put in a game. The whole atmosphere of the game through its dark and lovely graphics, eerie sounds and music is all of the highest quality. There is a also a new story called "Born from a Wish" that you can play with which tells the tale of Maria (One of the characters that you meet along the way) and what happened to her which is almost as large as the main story. Also included is a sixth ending to the main scenario and a minor feature that allows you to turn off the graphical effect that makes the game look like it was shot on cheap film stock. Be warned though this is definitely for adults only as it involves schizophrenia, suicide, manic depression, and child death. There are some pretty grisly scenes of murder, blood, mutilated corpses, and some images and videos that are shocking, graphic, and disturbing. It's highly recommended for all horror fans.

Thing, The Computer Artworks / Black Label Games [top]

Building up on the strong John Carpenter film from the 80s (which is based again on a black-and-white film from the 50s) Black Label Games sends any interested player to the Antarctic. The PC game begins directly after the events of the Carpenter film, however with its own story and vast surroundings. As a soldier one should bring light to the events, because obviously one hasn't succeeded to bring to the protagonists of the film "The Thing" under control or to be destroyed. The story leads the player among the rest in the Norwegian base. Over and over again one plays in the team with AI companions who can use different abilities. Especially engineers are of big importance. In addition, there is still the doctor and the combat soldier, with impressive fire power. The companions are afraid and do not trust the player very often because the alien can change shapes to imitate any living thing it touches. So being trusted is something you must win from the others. One can give weapons and ammunition to your companions or also a syringe which allows them to forget their fear. Also the player himself can never be sure whether the AI companions are not already infected (whehter earlier or later, it almost always happens) and be attacked by them too. Unfortunately, the soldiers do not remember past actions long enough, so that the emotions of the AI companions are not that consistent. In the later course one must also fight a lot against hostile soldiers. The Thing was also programmed for consoles and one can mark this in this game. One cannot save at any time and also the view freedom upwards and downwards is limited. In addition, it is played in the third-person behind view. The story has intensive action and offers some surprises. The graphics are good and the mood altogether also, although with both also maximum potential was not reached. All in all, this is a good action title with a few quirks.

Typing Of The Dead 2003 [J] Smilebit / SEGA Corporation [top]

This is an updated version of Japan's most popular typing tutor which has you shooting zombies and other enemies as you type words through the gameplay of the rail shooter House Of The Dead 2. The system of appearance of words on the screen has been improved to give challenge to the experts without frustrating novices. The game features a master mode in addition to work on both speed, precision and reflexes, with a "Speed Master Race" super fast or an "Accuracy Master Race" where one should not make any mistakes or a Reflex Master. A "VS Expert Mode" has the computer configured to reproduce the velocity of the greatest champions, thanks to the collaboration of eight Japanese masters of The Typing of the Dead. It is also possible to play on a small window and not full screen, change the difficulty, resolution and amount of lives.

This is a game released exclusively in Japan which aims to teach people how to type using a keyboard. It follows in the footsteps of The Typing of the Dead, by attaching itself to an already established Sega franchise (in this case, Space Harrier). Like The Typing of the Dead it relies on the player hitting keyboard keys at specified moments as quickly as possible. So it's much like watching someone play a game of Space Harrier, except when enemies pop onto the screen, you need to type some Japanese words (in Romaji) to shoot them down. Type too slowly and you'll get killed. Quick single letters will also occasionally pop up.

War Train: Normandy 1944 Inca Gold, Asylum Games [top]

6th June 1944 - the Allies have landed on the Normandy coast, suffering terrible losses. The Americans and the British are desperately trying to hold their bridgehead and at the same time advance further, to get more troops on to dry land and find a chink in the massive steel defenses of the enemy. The Germans are beginning to wilt a little under the pressure and Dr. Walter von Eisenring is no exception. He's a leading SS scientist and at the same time the inventor of a new, mass-destruction "wonder weapon". A troop inspection of his research laboratory is about to take place - manufacture of the weapon is falling behind schedule. Enter Steven Miller, an American spy - he manages to obtain secret documents of the utmost importance, documents that could change the outcome of the war. They are the actual plans of the German defense positions and the construction plans of the new German wonder weapon! A telling blow indeed against the Germans, if these should happen to fall into the hands of the Allied High Command. Miller is discovered and an intensive hunt for him commences - for the Nazis, everything's at stake. He succeeds in capturing a war train, which he must use to travel all the way through Normandy in order to reach Allied lines. He can only expect help and protection from a small handful of French Resistance fighters - but Nazi Germany mobilizes its entire, awesome might against him. Miller has no choice - he must defend himself with one cannon against wildly attacking Stukas, gunboats, tanks and soldiers. It has a comprehensive Normandy rail network, realistic locomotive performance, railroad station battles, Normandy countryside in 3D, and orchestral music.

Wulfram II Slurpysoft [top]

This is a free hybrid genre massively multiplayer online first-person shooter, real-time strategy, and simulation game. The Crimson Federation and the Azure Alliance are battling for control over planets, and the players are the cannon fodder they use. Players control one of two hovering vehicles in order to bring their team to victory by destroying the enemy's bases and players. This game is free to play, but donations are encouraged. Gameplay hinges around building and sustaining a base or number of bases centered around one or more "Power Cells" (PCs) which power a certain number of base items and have a circular field of effect. Power supplied by PCs is drained by base items at varying rates, and PCs cannot overlap fields, however multiple PCs can be deployed at the same point for backup use. The various base items include Gun Turrets (GTs), Flak Turrets (FTs or flaks), Missile Launchers (MLs), Fuel Pads (FPs), and Repair Pads (RPs or "reps"). Other deployable items include Darklights (DLs) and Skypumps (SPs), these two items do not require power sources. Base items are created by and dropped onto the field of play by orbital supply ships, of which most games start with at least one, and may have a maximum of 3 for each team. Supply ships also have the capability of bombarding bases with orbital bombs, if the team has placed the ship above the target base. The game ends when one team has lost all of its Repair Pads, which serve as spawn points, and has no players remaining on the field. The supply ships functions are controlled by someone who has the Uplink, also called the Linker. The Uplink, or link, may be stolen by the other team, it is then set in self-destruct mode and detonates in thirteen minutes and is placed on order on the supply ship. Players fulfill their role in the game by commanding one of two vehicles (Tank and Scout), and fending off players of the other team while trying to destroy their base using many varied methods depending on the situation. All vehicles have two default weapons, the Autocannon and Pulse Cannon for the Tank, and the Chain Gun and Repair Beam for the Scout. There are also several optional tertiary weapon systems, including several types of missiles, mines, floating heat-seeking bombs called caltrops, flares, and a very low damage infinite range weapon used to force enemies to move away from higher level emplacements, called the maser. All of the tertiary weapons are obtained by landing on the Fuel Pad. One player, the Linker, is usually delegated to build, maintain, and defend the base(s) by placing mines and fighting flanking enemies. The other current mode of play involves single and team dueling between evenly or unevenly matched groups of players. The game servers were shut down in 2010.

WW 2: Desert Rats 3LV Games / ValuSoft [top]

In 1941, Rommel began a successful offensive and drove back the British forces to Egypt. Special units are sent behind the German lines to provide supply problems to Rommel's troops. The units are called "Desert Rats". In this 3 game WW2 series which began with the Normandy you were on foot but in this game you steer a vehicle in which the second man with a weapon sits (which one can select before the mission). The levels are bigger than with the first parts; the playing time accordingly is also higher. In the missions one may not save and ammunition boxes of the Germans must be gathered (or one will have none). Desert Rats did in a play test being somewhat fun (clearly more than Normandy). However, it is not a first-person shooter, play is only in vehicles and in third-person behind-view (different variations are selectable). A mission plays during a sand storm, I guess that can be considered somewhat new. :o)

Zanzarah: The Hidden Portal Funatics Development / THQ / Xicat [top]

This is a very good action adventure mix from German developer Funatics where you play an 18-year old London girl who enters a fantasy land named Zanzarah through a mysterious box. She must help the world where fairies are unusually attacking others and strange elves are appearing. You must capture and collect, sort of like in Pokemon, 12 different types of fairies which will help you on your journey in third person view. They fight in first-person mode against wild fairies or rival masters by charging a magic blast and hitting opponents with it in 10 differing arenas. Each fairy has its own strengths and weaknesses so you must use them wisely. You can also have multiplayer battles with other players through the internet. Though the plot is pretty simple, the variety and quality of design of the fairies is very good ranging from little green imps pedaling helicopters with leaves for blades, caterpillars with human faces and suits of armor made from a tree branch, strange aquatic designs, to even demons, skeletons, and other not-so-cute designs for the fire, dark, and chaos fairy types. The environments are also beautifully realised with excellent sound and music all adding to a great overall effect.

Afro Santa AfroHorse [top]

Santa isn't around to deliver presents this year so you must help save Christmas! As Afro Santa you invade people's homes and collect presents that are scattered around the house. You must find the presents then sneak to the Christmas tree and leave them there to be eagerly received by those soon to awake. However, a few house inhabitants couldn't sleep and as a result have taken to walking around the halls that you must navigate. You have a radar which will show you the location of people and objects in the mazelike homes. If you're seen by anybody a ghost-like Christmas demon is spawned and begins to chase you around the level shooting at your red-and-white Santa bum! You can either run and try to avoid them or turn and shoot them with an Afro Santa exclusive pistol zappy thing. The shooting aspect of the game is just as enjoyable as the stealth side, so you may find yourself deliberately running in front of people so that you get a chance to blast those little demons. The gameplay is simple, fun and enjoyable however it isn't a game that will last very long unless you're quite young. A great game for small children and quite a blast for those a little older as long as you don't play it too often.

Bid For Power BFP Team [top]

This was originally a free fan-made mod for Quake III before becoming a standalone game in 2002. BFP started out as a Dragonball Z game, and neared completion as one. They ran into legal problems and had to repopulate the universe with original things. It has fast paced deathmatch action modeled after Japanese anime. It incorporates characters, levels, attacks, sounds, music and many other aspects of anime shows and reconstructs them into the Quake III engine. It also adds to the element of deathmatch with several different types of multiplayer games including Free For All, Last Man Standing, Team Play, The Battle for the Planet, Survivor and Tournament. There is also a singleplayer story mode which can be played offline. The standalone final v5.0 contains many new features compared to the original Bid For Power mod. This package comes with over 130 characters from Dragonball Z/GT/AF (each character has his own Attacks like Kamehameha, Final Flash, etc.) and 55 maps from Dragonball Z (like Cell Arena,Budoukai, etc.), and a very easy to use Melee System.

Black Shades Wolfire Games [top]

The player controls a psychic bodyguard who is tasked with protecting a VIP from a horde of zombies, snipers and other assorted would-be assassins for a set amount of time. Once that time is met, the player progresses to another level. Each new level will present a randomly generated city, and a new weapon for the player. The levels get progressively harder. Aiming their weapon, the player is not presented with an aiming reticule as is common in most first-person shooter games, but allows the player to use the ironsight of their weapon. The player has two psychic abilities, the first one being "Slow-mo". This ability allows the player to slow down time, for the purpose of having more time to aim, kill possible assailants. The second ability is the "soul fly", which allows the player to fly around the city without the body of the bodyguard, allowing them to find enemies. Unique features include: infinite randomly generated city, rag-doll skeletal animation, soul release mode, and fluid aiming system. Stop assassins by shooting them, knocking them unconscious, disarming them, tackling the VIP out of the line of fire, or any combination of the above. The game was one of the winners of the UDevGame 2002 contest, out of about 40 contestants. David Rosen aimed for a much simpler graphical style than in GLFighters and Lugaru in order to complete the game within the deadline.

CodeRED is a standalone game made using the (now open-source) Quake 2 engine. It features 20 single-player levels spanning 3 episodes plus 6 multiplayer deathmatch levels. The game has tons of new alien and robotic enemies, and 10 powerful weapons. It looks original and is a different experience and mood than Quake 2. The graphics are very good, if not breathtaking. The explosions look great, as do the burning skeletons. Your enemies look a little like the aliens from "Mars Attacks!" (and you can get a mod from the author's site that makes them look even more like the ones from the movie). The wall and gun models are also fairly good. There is no music in CodeRED but the sound effects are top-notch, from the blaster sounds to the sirens.

Cube Wouter van Oortmerssen [top]

Cube is an open source independent 3D engine platform with which one can very fast make single and multiplayer maps and also play of course. Underneath it lays still a scripting language which one must not use as a newcomer, however if inclined you can learn it as well. As a model, Quake serves as comparison. Only 28Mb are to be downloaded and the engine even on slow computers runs well. There is rather good newcomer tutorials and one has after about 15 minutes :-) your first immediately playable maps ready. The whole world exists in Cube from (if you wonder) thrown dice which can be changed relatively freely and quickly. Enclosed are already more than 20 maps which can be also changed in the touch of the button "E" (Edit mode) and be examined. What disappoints a bit are: the monsters (look a little bit funny), the (like Quake) conditioned choice of weapons, and one must find for himself some tutorials about important things like "scripting" very full of trouble. BUT it is Open Source and one can look for himself in the game code (see Half-Life 2 hehe) ;-) For players who just want another "Medal Of Honor" this is not extremely advisable, but for those interested in the subject 3D games production it is recommended. D-Day development began in 1998 as a Quake II mod and provided the first gameplay of this type in this now popular genre. In 2002 v4.1 was released as a standalone game due to the Quake II source being out. D-Day modifies the engine to the point where you do not even realize it is quake2 anymore. It features class based tactical teamplay combat, locational damage - head, chest, stomache, and legs, and no crosshair for added realism. The True-Sight feature - pulls gun up to center of screen to let you aim down the sights for improved accuracy. You have the ability to go prone and crawl around, jump stamina, and class limits. Officers can call in an airstrike to clear out enemies. You can drop any weapon and ammo and pick up weapons off the ground, plus there's an inventory weight system, and players bleed and limp. You can issue easy voice shouts using F-keys. There are no individual scores, kills go to team score 5 maps included in the full install and there are tons of community made maps. High res skins and immersive sound effects are also present as well as immersive details such as helmet deflections, guns being shot out of hands, brains flying out of headshots, bloodsprays, and dud grenades.

MUX PieSlice Productions [top]

Project "Lebensraum" is a classified military project based on bio-mech weapons and cyborg soldiers. Once headed by Dr. R. Klostermeyer and Professor Timo Garben, Garben assumed complete control over the assignment after Klostermeyer withdrew from the project. Since then Garben has transformed the project into a plot to take over the world. To prevent the destruction of the human race and to stop the military from dropping a neutronium bomb into Garben's complex (thus killing thousands of civilians while taking out Garben), you've been hired by the CIA to infiltrate Garben's stronghold and wipe out as many of the cyborg army as possible. Take out Garben and the planet will be saved. Originally done in QBasic, the raycasting and graphical effects in MUX were redone in C in favor of pumping up the game to a playable framerate. The result is extraordinary: the game's realistic-looking, unique tilesets are enhanced by lighting-effects, floors, ceilings, explosions, and original, detailed character models that are as high in quality as possible without having to use polygon-based models. It has 20 levels and nice music as well.

Second Age [J] Anno Room [top]

This is an excellent free 3D giant robot ("mechas" in Japanese) action game set in space. The game offers excellent mecha designs, fun gameplay, and a variety of modes including Story, Practice, and 2-player. You can choose from 8 available mechas, each with its own weapons, strengths, and weaknesses. The Story mode takes you through a series of missions set in 4 environments, ranging from deep space to planetside. You view the action from a third-person perspective, as if you were hovering behind your mecha. The mechas are definitely the highlight of Second Age. "Silver Bullet" mecha can transform into Hunter, a jet fighter (more or less like the mechas in Macross and Gundam anime series). Deseed can launch its own arms and heads as weapons at enemies. The interface is well-designed and informative without being intrusive: you see all the salient information including your health bar, primary and secondary energy level (needed to use shields and weapons), shield level, and a small radar that shows the enemies' positions relative to you. The controls are easy to learn, but it will take some time before you can master the moves of all the mechas, because not all of them are easy to remember. The game is in Japanese, but you won't need to read anything to finish the game as the goal of all the missions is the same: kill everything that moves :)

Silver Knights Haruo Teshima [top]

This.is a homemade 3D mech action/fighting Dojin soft game created by Haruo Teshima. The game is popular in Japan and Hong Kong, and has a small following in the United States. The gameplay is relatively similar to the Virtual-On arcade game, in a team deathmatch style of shooter/fighter. The player is pitted against other mechs in a three-dimensional environment. The game can hold up to six players at a time, including both computer-controlled characters and player characters. The game's controls make use of the keyboard, except during "Simple Wars" which requires the use of both the keyboard and mouse. The development of this game was temporarily stopped at milestone version 0.05D, but production of new pre-alpha builds started again in January 2007. The latest stable version of the game features over 10 different mechs. However, newer versions feature only the current mech being worked on, in contrast to past comprehensive updates. The latest version is 0.12 G. Silver Knights uses DirectPlay as network method. Fan-based websites have developed a player-supported community. Network play typically requires additional technical setup. Support pages are available from the developer to instruct new users, but such pages only instruct according to specific routers and firewalls in Japanese. Therefore, for users who do not speak Japanese, setting up a router can be difficult. Many users elect to utilize Hamachi, a freeware VPN client, or Easy VPN to directly connect to other players.

Space Corps Banshee Studios [top]

Conversion of a classic overhead space ship shoot-em-up Amiga game from the late 1980's and early 1990's to the PC. Written initially under the banner of 'Infinite Dimensions', Space Corps is full on action featuring sound tracks by 4Fit and some of Tamir Erez's greatest instrumentals. Every time you shoot down an enemy ship you gain rank, and higher ranks have access to more powerful ships from different shipyards. The ships featured in this version are all new because at the time the developer had not re-discovered the original Space Corps graphics and likewise the range of weaponry is greatly different to what original users will be used too. There are still rockets and homing missiles, but that's just the tip of the iceberg! Now you get to blast away with area of effect weapons and mass drivers. Everytime you shoot down an enemy ship you gain rank, and higher ranks have access to more powerful ships from different shipyards. Also added - a non-playable corvette class ship to give you some grief - it would be too powerful to let you play it but shooting it down, now that's another matter! Also new in this version is another non-playable ship - the stealth ship! There's plenty of technical improvements too, although the game keeps it's original 2D format it is all written in 3D so you can zoom in and out of the battle. Single player only.

Toy Trouble Brainsmash Interactive [top]

This is a happy combo of beat'em up and shooter. There are 4 selectable characters. These characters are very tiny radio controlable robots. Each of them has a completely different look and specialties (one might be fast, but not flexible and harder to control and the other might be easy to control and flexible but very slow). Levels are very different from other games. Instead of arenas (that absolutely make no sense at all) the game will have normal rooms as levels. Imagine yourself blasting another robot in your parents' room or even in the kitchen. You can find all kinds of weapons in the room, so you don't have to destroy your enemy using your robot arms. Transfusion Transfusion Team [top]

Transfusion is a Quake1 engine standalone source mod of the game Blood. So far, just the Multiplayer part of Blood has been converted while getting the majority of the single player game's functionality at the same time. It supports bots using the FrikBots system. Originally called just "qBlood", it was renamed to "BloodBath" before becoming Transfusion. It was later updated to the Dark Places engine, a much updated Quake 1 engine also used by the Nexuiz game. It is fully 3D and much of the media has been replaced with real models.
The Transfusion CD, available before, was a compilation of maps from Blood, tools for map making in Transfusion, as well as the installer and SDK for Transfusion 1.01.

Tropical Storm Digital Awe [top]

Tropical Storm is a freeware, independent, 3D title where the levels and enemy soldiers are dynamically created from a variety of levels (up to 9999 levels). There is also a 5-level campaign mode. The story is quite simple. Marxist rebels, working along with drugrunning Facist insurgents, and terrorists from the Greenland Liberation Army have established several bases on small islands in the Pacific Ocean. As a commando with a fairly dramatic-sounding name, it's your job to blow them to bits. Your mission will be complicated by the large number of identical looking Commie soldiers prowling around the island. Moreover, using ancient Marxist reincarnation technology, they will reappear alive and well at a bunker, several seconds after being killed. So, you have to move fast to destroy all the buildings you can with your absurdly powerful grenades. You can't blow up the bunkers, so don't even try.

Virtual X [J] Katomy [top]

This is a 3D FPS/TPS from the Japanese maker of Momotan. You play as a robot in a small maze. First you have to kill all the small monsters and at the end of each level: a big boss. There are 3 levels, each level uses the same graphics. The higher level the more monsters you have to beat. This game is made for using a gamepad, not the keyboard. You can still use the keyboard, but it is difficult. At the start of the game you can change many options such as resolution, difficulty level, etc.

Zwischenzug Mike Meyer [top]

This is a 3d shooter maked with Dark Basic where the goal is to knock your opponents off of the arenas, instead of just doing enough damage to them. This game was selected as one of only ten student projects worldwide to be in the 2003 Independent Games Festival Student Showcase. What makes Zwischenzug cool is that it was an experiment with unusual gameplay. At first glance it will appear like a standard third-person shooter, but there are some things that really make it stand out. The big change is that combat is not about dealing damage, but rather knocking your opponent out of the arena, like in Super Smash Brothers. The HUD is near the avatar instead of at the screen edges. The player is able to pick the level progression. Instead of forcing the player through the levels in any particular order, he can choose which teleporter to take and when he does it. The difficulty still increases as you play though because the enemies that appear are based on your score.

Aces Of World War 1 Tatanka / Lemon Interactive [top]

This combine elements of an action game and a flight simulator. Three-dimensional clouds you can actually hide in, and the fact that the sun can really blind you, create totally new tactical possibilities. The action of the game takes place on the front of the First World War. Player can fly the most famous aeroplanes of that time. There are three game modes; airman career by scenario, single mission and multiplayer network game. Player can fight with many opponents in the air and on the ground. Besides planes, he must destroy armed cars, anti-aircraft artillery, balloons, airship, submarine and other objectives as airbase or tactic bridge. There is also training mode that makes possible to get to know all types of planes available in this game. In this mode of play there are fourteen missions to choose from: eight, if you join the Allied Forces, and six, if you decide to fly a German plane. Besides other fighters, he will have to wrestle against armed vehicles, anti-aircraft ground fire, observation balloons, a giant Zeppelin, a submarine etc. Objectives of missions might also be to bomb an enemy base or to take pictures of enemy military objects. Impressive area of action with many unique landmarks. The area of military operations covers almost 1000 km2. The landscape ranges from fields and gentle meadows, entangled in a net of roads, to thick forests. The sandy seashore turns into a steep, 150 meters high cliff. In the south a meandering river carves a picturesque valley in the surrounding rich green. There are of course buildings player cannot ignore during the flight: civilian houses, farms and military bases with adjoining airfields. There is also a bridge, defended as heavily as any military base by the anti-aircraft ground fire and machine guns positions. Each player will have to accomplish a number of missions varying in difficulty: combat patrols and bombing runs (he will get to bomb a bridge, an enemy base and some ground fire positions); attacks on a column of vehicles, elimination of observation balloons and destruction of a Zeppelin and a submarine. Sometimes player will have to face the danger alone, more often he is going to be accompanied by a few other friendly aircrafts. In game there is weather, which determines not only the visibility, but also the maneuverability of the plane. Poor weather conditions can impair the steerability of the aircraft. If player have a joystick with Force Feedback, he can even sense gusts of wind, vibrations of machine guns, hits, collisions and impact of explosions. Advanced graphics engine 3D visualization mechanisms - volumetric fog/ smoke - explosions and shots - flares and lens flares - damages - clouds - progressive mesh - MIP mapping - invisible planes elimination algorithms. Multiplayer battles over TCP/IP connection.

Bird Hunter 2003: Legendary Hunting Sunstorm Interactive, Inc. / Infogrames, Inc. [top]

This combines the best of three previously released Bird Hunter programs - Upland, Waterfowl, and Wild Wings - into one package. Enhancements include a "create-a-gun" feature with customizable textures for bows or guns, new graphics using the Serious Engine, and six large hunting areas covering more than six square miles. Hunters can travel the environments by foot, boat, or vehicle (ATV, snowmobile, and truck) and give six specific commands to their faithful hunting companions (more than a half dozen species of pointers and retrievers are available for upland and waterfowl). It includes several significant new features in the areas of Grand Slam and Banded Birds, new AI, and custom content. In addition to the turkeys needed to fill up the Grand Slam trophy room, players can now hunt for extremely rare banded birds in all four sub-species found in the U.S. Dogs learn and adapt behavior based on the hunting style used (no two dogs act the same). A level editor provides customization of hunting venues or creation of new ones, and a projectile editor lets players create shotguns or arrows with customized textures. Hunters and vehicles can be customized as well. Dog commands include hunt, flush, heel, stay, fetch, and OK. Using the right dog for the right situation is important to successful hunting. black labs, Chesapeake Bay retrievers, and golden retrievers are top choices for hunting all 12 species of waterfowl, while vizsla, English pointers, and Brittany spaniels are ideal for stalking the eight upland bird species. Players can also practice shooting skills on still targets, or at a skeet and trap range with a wide array of available weapons. Other features include equipment such as birdcalls, decoys, blinds, binoculars, and compasses, variable weather conditions and time of day, realistic bird behavior, a logbook, statistic tracking, and more.

Carnivores: Cityscape Sunstorm / Infogrames [top]

Cityscape is actually the 4th part of the Carnivores series but this time the game offers some unique changes and for the first time uses the Serious Sam engine. There are specific missions rather than just hunting dinos and a story (a spaceship with carnivores has fallen near a town on a distant planet). Environments include the canyon where the ship has crashed, the ship itself, the city, the sewers, the subway system, and the industrial area. In a departure from the rest of the Carnivores series, this game is a first person shooter, and not a hunting simulation. The levels are played sequentially and are mission-based, each mission unlocking the one following it. One can play as a person and as a carnivore (with different purposes). There are 20 missions altogether in which one cannot save. As a human, players can choose to equip a machine gun, sniper rifle, shotgun, grenade launcher, or x-rifle before each mission. Additional equipment includes binoculars, night vision, and thermal vision. Dinosaurs have their claw attack and leap attack, as well as the aid of a sort of low-light vision mode. When playing as a dinosaur, your species changes from mission to mission, so that by the end of the game you have played as each species at least once. Mission objectives include things like turning off the ship's reactor, rescuing civilians, protecting hazardous materials from destruction, defending a workman who is repairing a train, and also plenty of "get from point A to point B in one piece" type of missions. Additionally there are several Deathmatch modes available, and the single player missions can be played cooperatively. Once missions have been beaten, they are all available for replay from a menu. The graphics are quite good, even if the town itself is not always 100% realistic. The atmosphere in the game is well done and it is fun to play. Whoever likes dinosaurs and shooters should take a look or even two.

Dam Busters, The Just Flight [top]

In this expansion for Combat Flight Simulator 2 and Flight Simulator 2004, 617 Sqn's most famous raids are re-created for the first time in a PC simulation and this package is officially licensed by the Royal Air Force. The Dam Busters epitomised the best of British determination and ingenuity - this PC simulation is no different. Just as Wallis and his team struggled to make this remarkable technical achievement, Just Flight and its development team have worked diligently to achieve the level of realism worthy of such historic events. Mimicking history, one of the most difficult elements was the bouncing bomb effect - a first in flight simulation! The Dam Busters' most famous mission demands you summon the skill and courage of the heroic WWII crew to destroy the Ruhr dams and paralyse the enemy's industrial heart. The Dam Busters, as 617 Squadron became known as after the raids of May 1943, were also responsible for some of World War II's other great sorties - the sinking of the Tirpitz, raids on V1 & V2 rocket sites, Bergen U-boat pens and, of course, the raid on Hitler's 'Eagle's Nest'. There are 25 daring missions awaiting you in The Dam Busters, which hosts an impressive and authentic selection of aircraft which were used by 617 Sqn. including the famous 'bouncing bomb' Lancaster, Grand Slam Lancaster, Lancaster B1, Mosquito and Wellington.

This was the first Massively Multiplayer Online playing galaxy. This galaxy was filled with monsters and strange new worlds, but it was also home to thousands of other players from around the world. Players created unique characters and starships and could affect the galaxy, but the game persisted even after individual players log off. Alien encounters, fierce combat, cutthroat commerce, new discoveries, perilous quests, strategic alliances, diplomatic backstabbing, and epic wars awaited you and the friends you adventured with. It let you build your character and career in three distinct ways: exploration, trade, and combat. The game was designed around these three activities, and each race, profession, skill, starship, and item affected how well you did these core activities. Explorers had access to hidden locales, the best sensors, the most accurate maps, the fastest ships, and stealth capabilities. Tradesmen made and sold goods, ran trade routes, went on trade missions, had the biggest cargo holds, and did whatever it took to make a profit. Warriors thrived on combat, destroying enemies, going on dangerous missions, and protecting their friends during perilous missions. It had regular monthly story driven updates designed to gradually change the game environment as the plot unfolded. In June of the release year, players met a new race - the Vrix. This was a substantial update to the online universe, adding many more missions for higher level players and improving the intelligence of all NPCs in the game. It was the last game made by Westwood Studios, the original developer of the Command & Conquer series. EA shut down the game on September 22, 2004. On November 10, 2012 a major emulator project launched their version of the live game. Over six years of project time were dedicated to this release. The game is stable, complete, and contains several new features including the three missing classes. Run non-profit and by donations only, this game is free to play for everyone at all times.

This is an online combat flight videogame that takes the player to the skies over Europe and the Pacific. The ability to participate with other players from all over the world enables huge aerial battles involving dozens of aircraft from small and nimble fighters to hulking flying fortresses. There are three primary modes of play: Dogfight, Territorial Conquest, and Offline Play. The first mode is pure action: jump-in and fight either individually or as a team. The Territorial Conquest is the real meat of the game: players align themselves with a particular country and fly strategic bombing missions against their enemies. Enemy supply centers and tank columns must be destroyed while the player's own resources are protected. Finally, Offline play is designed to train and hone the player's skills needed to participate in online play. A.I. enemy pilots serve as fodder. Players can chose from over 96 planes to fly from all the major belligerent countries: United States, Great Britain, Germany, the Soviet Union, and Japan. The box included three months’ free online gaming for new subscribers. The game ran as a subscription service until 1st August 2010, when it was discontinued. Over those years it was rigorously updated and Fighter Ace 4.21 - FA 10th Anniversary Edition v3.0 was the final, online version. Heli Heroes / EARTH 2150: Heli Heroes Reality Pump / Zuxxez / Snowball / 1C [top]

It all started long ago - and not with a bang, but with a whimper. Times are good. The Soviet Union has crumbled and the old enemies are long gone. Regions and states that used to be notorious flashpoints, like Libya, the Middle East and Africa are quieter now than at any time in their histories. It hardly makes sense to maintain a large standing army anymore. So, responding to popular demand, politicians begin reducing military outlays and start automating their defences. In order to keep dictators and terrorists from taking advantage of the situation, all tactical planning in each region has been given to a computer. The system has direct command and control over the remaining troops and automatically controlled weaponry (such as the missile silos). Budding conflicts can be solved by the computer alone. A total of 29 such systems have been installed meantime..
Heli Heroes updates the old-school Shoot’em up arcade machine games to new dimensions on today’s PCs. Developed by Reality Pump Studios the console style title is designed for both PC and X-box platforms. The PC version shows the latest in fast action graphics and arcade gameplay. The player commands an AH-64 Apache Longbow or a Russian Hokum helicopter. The goal is to fly through various levels and carry out the mission objectives. During the mission, the player will find a different type of weapon and additional offensive and defensive systems on the map. . The game's look and feel is made up of a 3D landscape that the player flies his helicopter over, through and into. The mix of reality and Sci-Fi missions vary from destroying Iraqi oilfields up to fighting against the “Big Boss” enemies in Alaska.

Jane's Combat Simulations: Attack Squadron Looking Glass Studios Inc., Mad Doc Software LLC / Xicat Interactive Inc. [top]

This is a WWII flight simulator based in the European theater. There are two campaigns: an Allied campaign and an Axis campaign. Fourteen flyable aircraft are included: the standard fighters such as the Spitfire, P-38, Mustang, BF-109, etc., as well as a number of bombers and even the German jet fighter, the ME-262. Each aircraft features a fully-modeled and authentically detailed cockpit. The terrain and play area include all of Europe and Britain using actual satellite-mapped terrain data. Each mission has the player flying one aircraft in a squadron, and he can issue orders to his wingmen. Missions include patrol, intercept, ground support, and strategic bombing. One of the main features is the ability, in bombers, for the player to switch positions between pilot, nose gunner, tail gunner, side gunners, belly turret, top turret, and bombardier. This is especially fun in multiplayer mode, as several players can man a bomber while others try to shoot it down. The game is modifiable with new skins and models. Additionally, a mission editor is available for players to create their own missions. It was one of the final projects being worked on at Looking Glass Studios when they folded in early 2000. Mad Doc Software first hired most of the ex-LG staffers that were working on the project and then, via a partnership with publishing house Xicat, got the rights for both Jane's license and the rights to the unfinished game Looking Glass had been working on.

MechWarrior 4: Inner Sphere 'Mech Pack Cyberlore Studios / Microsoft Entertainment [top]

These two small mech pack expansions were released within a month of each other at a reduced price but even so, felt like something that should've appeared in a free patch rather than a retail product. The Inner Sphere pack has four new mechs: Dragon, Highlander, Zeus, and Hunchback. There are also two new parts and two new maps. The ballistic heavy gauss rifle is like its name says, a more powerful gauss rifle, but heavier and lacking range (four slots, 18 tons, 600m, eight second reload). The other piece of technology is a nifty little thing called the IFF Jammer. When activated, the jammer will trick enemy HUDs into thinking you are a neutral target. There are also two new multiplayer maps. Coliseum is pretty self-explanatory (an enormous stadium is the ring and you and your mech are one of the gladiators). In stark contrast, Gagetown is actually a tree laden area just outside the walled city of...Gagetown. Since these two maps could be found free on the internet for download, it made this an even bigger rip-off.

Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 3: Battle for Europe Microsoft Game Studios [top]

Combat Flight Simulator 3 is the 3rd version of the popular WW2 simulators from Microsoft. This version is focused specifically on the European theater of operations with mission areas like Germany, UK, and France. This version has major enhancements over previous ones mainly in detailed graphics and improved dynamic missions. Graphics features include realistic cloud banks you can fly in and out of, losing yourself or an enemy aircraft and incredibly detailed ground detail and scenery visible at normal flight altitudes. Explosions, plane damage and smoke effects are also greatly improved over previous versions. Playing the game allows for dynamic missions that vary as you progress through the game. Based on the outcome of your mission - S&D, reconnaissance, air superiority, etc. you earn prestige points and change the outcome of the war. Eighteen different planes (P-51, P-47, Spits, Me 109, Fw 190, Ju 88, Typhoon IB, etc.) with multiple variants each allows for some specialized playing. Online and multiplayer options are available with specific multiplayer missions included as well.

Remington Big Buck Trophy Hunt Stellar Stone / GameMill Publishing [top]

Remington Big Buck Trophy Hunt is a 2002 WINNER hunting game devloped by Stellar Stone and published by GameMill Publishing. Remington, despite its name, does not actually contain hunting for trophies (trophies being a common theme in many of Stellar Stone's creations), and is notable for being the first game to feature lush environments and realistic wildlife. In the game, you play as an All-American big buck trophy hunter who must exterminate furries from Lord Stell's hunting reservation, each one bearing a fraction of HWSNBN's spirit. Remington, unlike Taxi Racer, was published by then-newcomer GameMill Publishing, and contains many things that would be used in Stellar Stone's future games, such as the graphics engine (Eternity), the physics engine (RigPhysics), the technique of mipmapping, the Gray Void, and the "YOU WIN !" screen. It was a runaway breakthrough success among WINNERs, mainly due to its brutal deer, pristine visuals, scar-inducing music, and gripping story. However, LOSERs felt that Stellar Stone rode off the heels of Taxi Racer, and panned the game due to their inability to comprehend the sheer WINNERness emitting from it. Remington takes place two years after the events of Taxi Racer, in which Russian cab driver Durik has decided to retire and give in to the All-American culture. He has now assumed the role of big buck trophy hunter. One day when hunting, he is attacked by a deer incarnation of HWSNBN. Because you have not yet embodied the powers of WINNER, you immediately fall into a coma in which you are greeted by Lord Stell. He tells you of a magical land called Russia where Rig and man dominate beast and the evils of LOSER. When you awake, you find yourself in a Russian hospital with a Remington rifle at your side. You step outside to discover Lord Stell sitting in the cab of Sunrise W12, who kindly drops you off at a hunting reservation to finish your mission. Because you are in Russia, you find that you have amazing powers like the ability to instantly switch between weapons, and the ability to keep your gun perfectly steady no matter how fast you move. Blessed with such gifts, it is your duty to find and exterminate all LOSER furries disguised as deer on the reservation.

Sabre Vs. MiG: The Korean Conflict Flight 1 [top]

Sabre vs. MiG sets the stage for the beginning of fighter combat in the early "Jet Age" and the famous battles over MiG Alley; the airspace in the North Western corner of North Korea. MiG Alley was an infamous breeding ground for trouble and challenged the best of pilots. Now you can zoom-climb the famous MiG-15, swoop down to assault the UN aircraft and try to make it back to safety over the border, or you can strap yourself in one of the most famous MiG eaters of all time - the F86 Sabre. The Korean Conflict was the cutting ground for the US Air Force in the 1950's and challenged it to test its abilities, technology and commitment to air superiority. Sabre vs. MiG includes custom aircraft, scenery, and missions designed specifically for Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator 2. The aircraft contained in Sabre vs. MiG display many real CFS2 features typically not found in 3rd party aircraft: CFS2/FS2002 style rolling wheels - sliding canopies - pilot ejection - jet exhaust trails - speed brakes - working shocks and suspension - fully rendered virtual cockpits with working gauges - multi resolution format for increased online playability and frame rates - working drop tanks - individual component separation occurs when damage potential is reached.

This is a 3D tactical starship combat game, set in the universe of Star Trek: The Next Generation. The single-player campaign arcs are playable as Federation, Klingon, or Romulan factions. The game has customizable starship construction options (giving the player the opportunity to retrofit phasers, torpedoes, engines, and other components as he or she gains prestige points). The Dynaverse 3 feature offers persistent online gaming as up to 128 players compete to conquer the galaxy. The single-player storyline is broken into Klingon, Romulan, and Federation segments. The plotline involves a threat to galactic peace which emerges after the Klingon-Federation alliance constructs an advanced new starbase, designated 'Unity One', near the Romulan border. Each campaign invites the player to behave in a manner suited to the character of the chosen faction, as one proceeds through a consistent plot. In addition to the single-player campaigns, there is a single-player 'Conquest' campaign which allows the player (as Klingon, Romulan, Federation, or Borg) to attempt to dominate the galaxy without passing through campaign missions. Head-to-head multiplayer action without the grand strategic elements of Dynaverse 3 is available in multiplayer battle scenarios which can be played over Internet or LAN.

As the player progresses through the game, skill points are awarded and the character grows to be a more efficient hunter. Multiplayer is included so that players can challenge each other in online hunts and compete for the monster prizes. It offers players a chance to hunt elk, black bears, mountain lions, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, caribou, grizzly bears, wolves, and moose. Available weapons include a shotgun, bow, crossbow, and rifle. Players must track their quarry, be stealthy, and hunt responsibly with a hunter they can customize. Other animals, such as red-tailed hawks, golden-mantle ground squirrels, mallard ducks, bald eagles, and trout also inhabit the hunting environments though they can not be targeted. Available areas range from Colorado to Alberta and include harsh weather conditions like driving rain and heavy snow.

Though this anime-inspired game of giant robots and their human pilots uses some nice cel shaded graphics, two-thirds of the game's 13 long levels take place in virtually identical mazelike canyon corridors. Most other environments are blocky characterless industrial landscapes or boring caves. There are 2 types of gamelpay. In the "shoot 'em up" sections, you pilot a mech from a third-person perspective. You navigate a maze and look for and destroy objects to continue to the next boring level. There are 2 (wow) weapons, a gun and a missile launcher and your enemies have no AI that can be seen. Then there are some levels where you play humans and have (gasp) 1 weapon, a pistol, and have to solve some simple adventure elements between the similar fighting in the boring levels. Simply terrible.

The most prominent enhancement is extremely updated graphics and terrain. Plane models are much more detailed both inside and out. Special effects like tracers and explosions are also present and more detailed than in previous versions of the game. The terrain is modeled from satellite data as well. New in this version is a more detailed offline training mode, called the Fighter Pilot Academy, that will help get new players acquainted with the game. Aero Style Takas [top]

This is an excellent freeform aerial combat shooter that sports a very intuitive mouse-driven interface, crisp SVGA graphics, and fun gameplay. Your goal in the game is simply to pilot a biplane similar to Sopwith and kill everything in the sky that moves, ranging from balloons, to gliders and other planes. Your plane moves in a straight line, and you can change its direction simply by moving your mouse around. Then, just left-click to shoot and right-click to perform a nice "roll" maneuver (looks like a corkscrew to me, but I would be hard pressed to come up with a technically correct term for that). The controls take some getting used to, but once you do, it will feel like so much like a second nature that you would wonder why no other plane-combat game uses this method. Best of all, the game plays in a Window, which makes it ideal for a round of quick aerial combat during coffee breaks.

This Doujin shmup mixes in various characters from popular animes/VN such as Air and Kanon. It has colorful and cute animated girl characters shooting energy bolts at various fantasy enemies. It also has three attacks that the character can perform. One is a punch, which knocks the enemy out and destroying other enemies in the way. The next attack is an uppercut. Like the powerful punch, it also knocks a enemy out and destroys other enemies in the way. If you use the right arrow key and then press the key that performs the punch and uppercut, you will perform an EX attack, which is a stronger version of the punch and uppercut. All of the background music are remixes of certain songs of the original computer game and the TV series. It's an excellent attempt at a danmaku (bullet hell) game and the developer would go on to make Trouble Witches.

Chicken Invaders 2: The Next Wave InterAction Studios [top]

After defending Earth in the previous game, our anonymous hero just wants to have a double chicken burger special, but soon enough he finds out the main assault of furious chicken is yet to come. The chicken's true plan is to invade each planet on the solar system and form a chicken empire. Our hero must jump into his spacecraft once again and promise the future of mankind...and chicken burgers. This is the second game in the Space Invaders clone series. The player controls an anonymous space pilot which must clear 110 waves of space chicken (including 10 secret ones) and reach their leader - a giant laser-shooting egg. The player has 3 types of weapons: red shots (rapid but weak), green shots (slower but powerful) and yellow shots (weak but penetrating laser). Each weapon can be upgraded by collecting power-ups up to level 10 with a secret 11th level. Throughout the game the player receives various bonuses according to his performance (quick wave clear, minimum shooting, collection of all points and more), and additional points can be obtained by collecting items dropped from dead chicken. A Christmas Edition was released in 2003 with Christmas themes. From carols playing as background music to chickens wearing Santa hats modifications to the game have been made in music, story line and most obviously the graphics. Instead of dropping eggs on you the enemies drop Christmas Tree decorations. Instead of entering a meteor shower you are now bombarded with snowballs. The game play has remained the same as the original version including the 110 levels of play. The three weapons remain mostly the same but with added colour changes. Their intensities are still up to eleven levels. The option of putting your high scores up to the table on the developer's website still stands.

Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, The Team Shanghai Alice [top]

This is a vertical-scrolling shooter, the sixth official game in the Touhou series, and the first being made exclusively for the Windows platform. During a peaceful summer in Gensokyo, an unnatural scarlet mist appears blocking out the sun and causing the affected areas to become dark and cold. Playing as either Reimu Hakurei (a shrine maiden) or Marisa Kirisame (a playful black magician), the player has to battle his way through 6 challenging stages, and face the "Scarlet Devil" behind the cause. The game is a bullet hell shooter: Enemies are shooting bullets in very high counts, often creating a certain pattern covering the entire playing area. The focus lies more on evading those bullets than on shooting down enemies. The player has a normal shoot and a limited bomb option which clears the screen of any bullets. Enemies appear in multiple waves, dropping power-up and point items when shot down. The player can use a focus button, causing the character's shoot to become more powerful and his movement to become slower, which makes it easier to avoid bullets. Each stage has two bosses, one more easy mid-boss and a more difficult final one. These bosses often use multiple "Spell Cards", which create a particularly difficult bullet pattern for the player to avoid.

G-Type CnC Darkside [top]

This is an excellent clone of R-Type, IREM's arcade blockbuster that spawned numerous sequels and remakes on just about every computer system and console except the PC. This freeware remake for Windows does a great job of recreating the R-Type experience for PC gamers, from the familiar shape of R9 ship, excellent graphics (which looks more like the more detailed Super Nintendo version of the game than the original arcade version), and near-flawless shoot 'em up gameplay. As in the original game, you can pick up power-ups that appear when you kill "Armos". These include air-to-ground, reflective, air-to-air, heat-seeking lasers, and speed-ups. You can also hold down the fire button to make your shot stronger. At full strength, your shot will kill every enemy that it touches. The game has 5 stages (as opposed to 8 in the original), and while R-Type fans will recognize almost everything, there are some surprises in store that makes the game even better. If you like shoot 'em up games but have never played this wonderful series, here's your chance to try it on your home PC. If you already are a fan, you'll be pleased with this very faithful remake.

Gridrunner++ Llamasoft Ltd. [top]

Gridrunner++ was originally designed for the Pocket PC but a Windows port followed quickly. It only runs in a window, and going windowed full-screen stretches everything wide, but other than those legacy issues from Gridrunner++’s original platform it's an absolutely perfect, pure arcade shooter. The Gridrunner series has always been Jeff Minter’s version of Centipede. Enemies pour onto the screen in a line and, as you shoot them down, they clutter up the playing field with bombs. This one is a bit more agile than its predecessors, though, so instead of the bombs just dropping straight down when they go off, they explode in a plus shape, which isn’t all that big a deal until you have 10 go off in a line. Because of that gameplay turns into a balance of shooting and dodging enemies and running cleanup on their remains. It gets a lot easier once you’ve collected a few powerups called sheepies, though. It not only increases the score multiplier but also gives you a ghost ship that fires vertically both up and down. Its shots aren't as strong as the main ship's, but seeing as the ghost doesn't take damage and you can stack up to 9 of them at a time, they quickly become indispensable. There are a few good reasons to hold off getting the sheepie powerup when it first appears, though. Even on the earlier levels, zipping up the screen is a great way to get an enemy in the face, exploding a pixel or two away from your goal. If you do manage to get it just before inevitable doom the ship de-rezes for a second, granting a tiny little window of invulnerability, which is just what you need for a quick flick of the mouse to send you to safety. The final advantage of waiting is the sheepie save, which is needed when all hope is lost and your ship is nothing but shards of pixel-shatter falling to the bottom of the screen. If you can steer the wreckage onto a sheepie, you won’t get the bonus multiplier but it will save your life. High level play means conducting a careful symphony of focused firepower and sheepie management, zipping into danger to grab salvation while strings of enemies swarm the screen and bombs cut the play field into tiny zones of limited safety. In 2003 the Arse on Fire Edition was released for a Llamasoft party. This edition features a larger playing field than the regular game, and the special Endurance Mode for veterans who think they can finish the game with one life and a larger concentration of enemies. In 2013, the original game was made freeware by the developers.

Gun Viper M.Nagahashi [top]

This is a 3D Japanese vertically scrolling shooter. The player controls a spaceship and shoots many enemies. When a crystal is collected, some energy is restored (depending on its color). The ship has rapid fire and access to a smart bomb. In addition, a disc surrounding the ship can be controlled to absorb enemy fire and provide more fire power. Many levels have a boss at the end. The game is very fast and arcade-like, with hundreds of enemies. There are five difficulty levels: kids, easy, normal, hard and super.

Magical Broom Extreme Twin Tail Lovers [top]

This is a freeware, open-source horizontal shooter from Japan, where the player controls a witch flying in a broom across the screen, shooting projectiles from its tip while carefully avoiding collision with all sorts of bizarre enemies and their incoming shots. Like in R-Type and other classic shooters, holding down the fire button charges the special shot, that when released goes directly to the foes. Destroyed enemies drop the standard power-ups of the genre, like speed boosts, satellite spheres that orbit around the witch and attack the incoming waves of flying adversaries, and other upgrades. The enemies are plentiful and imaginative, although they are 2D sprites rather than full 3D-rendered, so some of the less-detailed ones look like cardboard cutouts floating around the screen. The witch herself looks very good, though, and so does the tiny little helpers you will get once you collect the right power-ups. There are many power-ups and different weapons you can use, and their effects are rendered in full 3D colors that look great even in DirectX (version 8 required) software-only mode. Like most other quality Japanese shooters made after 2000, anyone with 3D card will truly appreciate the production value of this game. You can keep your button pressed to "charge" your shot power (as shown in the "force" indicator at the bottom of the screen), and another key ('C') to do autofire. Too bad the game has only one big level, but hopefully the author will add more in the future. Overall, it's a fun, addictive, and drop-dead gorgeous shooter that, like many of its recent brethren, will make you admire the designer's decision to make such a high-quality freeware game as opposed to a commercial one.

Metal Slug: Collector's Edition SNK Playmore Corp. / Mega Enterprises, DHM Interactive [top]

Metal Slug is a run and gun video game initially for the Neo-Geo console/arcade platform and became very popular in Japan. The gameseries is widely known for its sense of humour, extremely fluid hand-drawn animation, and fast paced two-player action. This is a compilation of the first four classic arcade games from the Metal Slug franchise including Metal Slug (1996), Metal Slug 2 (1998), Metal Slug X (1999), and Metal Slug 3 (2000) in their first PC release in Korea. A European release Metal Slug PC Collection in 2009 by DHM Interactive also included Metal Slug 4 (2002), Metal Slug 5 (2003), and Metal Slug 6 (2006) which was an arcade game. In each of the games, players proceed through a scrolling, run-and-gun action fest taking out enemies and saving hostages. The more hostages that are saved, the larger the bonus at the end of the level. When a player dies, they lose all of the hostages that they have saved earlier in the level. Players can access vehicles, obtain new weapons, and gain other power-up as they progress through the levels. Some of the games include multiple branches, secret paths, and other bonuses that create extra reply value.

Moral Minus Akatora Corporation [top]

This is a Swedish shmup with two different and selectable play systems in the game, Quick and Combo. Quick Shoot the enemies as fast as possible. The longer time the shot down percentage is at 100%, the more bonus you get. The percentage of enemies shot down can be seen in the lower left corner of the screen and the Quick Meter at the upper middle. Combo If the Combo Timer runs out, the Combo Counter resets to zero. If there is no longer than 2 seconds between two kills the Combo Counter increases. The higher the Combo value the more bonus points. - There are four initial types of crystals to pick up in the game. The Yellow crystal increases the hero's fire power. Three of these are needed to increase the fire power one level. The Red crystal increases the power of the Immoral Laser. Just one is needed to increase a level of power. The Blue crystal gives you a shield. This blue shield can take 5 hits before it disappears and the shield only protects you from the enemy bullets, not the enemies themselves. Also, when the shield is hit it will release bullets towards the closest enemy. The Black crystal gives you a reward of 50000 points. Collecting all three of the Black crystals on a level will award you an additional 350000 points. - The hit area of the hero is quite small. In order for the hero to take a hit, the main body must be hit by either an enemy or an enemy bullet. Noiz2sa ABA Games [top]

This abstract shoot 'em up game takes the mechanisms of the "mania shooter" (the modern kind of shoot'em'up with extreme amounts of bullets on the screen at the same time) and removes all graphical touches. Instead, all graphics are rendered in flat polygons. Your goal is to fly your ship through ten abstract levels while avoiding being hit by the barrages of enemy bullets. Unlike orthodox shooters, your ship is only vulnerable at its very core, the "sweet spot" if you will. As long as the trajectory of enemy bullets doesn't cut through the core of your ship, they will pass through you without hurting you. In order to better navigate the bullet clusters, you have a slow-down key which slows down your own movements so that you gain more precision. Shooting down enemies makes them release green stars which give you bonus points, but no weapons upgrades or smart bombs are available; the goal is simply to survive using your plain cannon. In addition to the ten normal levels, there are four endless levels, where the aim is to survive as long as possible, thereby gaining a higher high score. It makes use of the special BulletML markup language for defining bullet patterns. It also has excellent music for a freeware game.

Platypus Squashy Software / Idigicon Limited [top]

The big city of Collosatropolis has reached the limits of its expansion. The Collostropolan leaders have decided to solve the problem by invading the neighboring country of Mungola. Since Mungolans are simple, earthy types they don’t expect much of a struggle. Mungola's defense force consists only of a single squadron of fighter planes – the F-27 Platypus. Platypus is a side-scrolling shooter, where you use your little space craft to blast the enemy ships. Shooting some formations gives the player weapon upgrades for twenty seconds. All models in the game were designed in clay, photographed and then digitally coloured. There are 20 levels in four different worlds each with their own themes and enemies.

Samidare Project Blank (P.N.B) / RebRank / Amusement Makers [top]

Samidare, meaning Early Summer Rain, is a danmaku bullet-hell shooter game with shields and is perhaps Amusement Makers' most well-known work in the West. As a RebRank game, it is neither a Touhou game, nor a Seihou game. However, it pays homage to both with elements such as the in-game history and the extra stage. It takes place on and around the Earth in the 30th century. The dodging element of gameplay is slightly de-emphasized. This is due in part to the existence of a shield gameplay mechanism, which players can also use to unleash "hyper" attacks. While the player pilots different units in the main story mode and the extra stage, there is no significant change in gameplay.

Shikigami no Shiro EX [J] AlfaSystem / SourceNext [top]

In July 2005, a string of serial murders took place in Tokyo, where all the victims were female and killed by external injury. The killings took place within 20 hours. On July 21, the 31st victim was found. The police force classified the case as special crime #568, and began to seek investigators from occult sources. The story begins on July 23, with the 32nd victim. This vertical-scrolling shoot-'em-up Shikigami no Shiro was initially a Japanese arcade game which was then ported to North American consoles as Mobile Light Force 2. The Xbox release added Practice mode, Gallery, and Replay mode. This Japanese Windows port is of the first Xbox game. It includes I.R. mode and vertical screen layout from the arcade game. It features five levels with three stages each. Extending the replay value is a two-player mode and the ability to select from six characters (three male and three female to be exact). Aside from the standard rapid-fire stream of bullets standard to the genre, a spirit attack unique to each character is available, which significantly slows the ship's movement, but rewards the player with a substantial point increase. Coupled with the spirit attack is the Tension Bonus system, which rewards you with increased power and bonus points based on how close you are to enemies and their bullets.

Soldat Michal Marcinkowski [top]

This is a side-view action game with simple controls. Having certain similarities to Worms, the game combines gameplay simplicity with on-screen mayhem. There are single player modes for quick battles, however the game's focus is on multiplayer play. The game begins as soon as the player presses the start button. The player character, spawning at a starting location, can choose up to ten weapons to use; once done so, he can move around the screen left, right, down (crouch) and up (jet boots). Using the mouse to aim his weapons, the player's goal is to kill the other player characters, and attain the highest score. Some weapons aim properly with a continuous stream of fire (machine guns, miniguns), others are full of power in one shot (sniper rifle, shotgun) and are slow to reload, or, on the contrary, load fast but don't contain much power in each individual shot. Certain weapons are noticeably affected by gravity. Each player also has a jetpack to aid in jumping, falling and firing from the air. Medical kits and special ammo boxes spawn around each level while the players work to destroy each other's avatars. Successful completion of a level is based on kill count within a specified time limit. Features: Fun with physics based environment; Over 18 weapons available for killing; Play with friends and thousands of players; 7 game modes that will keep you hooked for hours; 64 amazing maps; Game editors for the creative; Join the ever growing friendly community creating mods, maps, scripts and tools; It's free! Two types of combat ships, several very long levels and a huge mass of shooting. This is easily one of the most explosive shooters and the graphics only make up a small part - the game is much deeper than that. The gameplay is fast and furious, albeit very difficult. Tons of things will be coming at you at all times, with a big bad boss monster (with a big bad weakness) at the end of each level. You start the game with all the weapons you need, three of which you can use to your liking. As you progress, you collect items to fill your "super" bar, allowing you to use a devastating attack for each of those weapons. Tomak Save the Earth, Again Seed9 Entertainment / Game Park [top]

This is a horizontal scrolling shooter from Korea. The graphics are reminiscent of the artwork in the Metal Slug series, with large enemies and giant bosses at the end of the levels that take most of the screen state. As in most titles of this genre, the game is divided in stages with a unique boss enemy at the end. The player controls one of three bizarre characters: a girl inside a flowerpot called Evian, the red demon Bastylo or a wizard named Night Moon Shine. As they fly around shooting at the oncoming foes, each successful hit increases a charge point meter at the top of the screen, below the health bar. This accumulated blue energy is used by the secondary weapons, that can be selected at any time to switch to more effective and powerful shots. Up to two players can cooperate in Arcade Mode, or compete for points in the Versus Mode.

This is an outstanding 3D shooter from the makers of Die Slave. The game is a vertical shooter that boasts excellent production values, jaw-dropping graphics (especially if you have a 3D card), lots of cool weapons and power-ups, and very good ship designs, all rendered in full 3D. As in Die Slave, your ship can transform into a robot (Japanese "mecha"), with access to different weapons. Your ship rolls along the side in 3D when it moves instead of just laterally in 2D like most other shooters.
