Em@il Games: X-COM MicroProse Ltd. / Hasbro Interactive, Inc. 1999

This is a turn-based game played over email loosely based on the original X-com game. The units and weapons are similar. The graphics are basic but clear. The major difference is the game-play of course, which is very simple. Each player controls a squad of randomly assigned troops, you have limited action points and move/fire options. Whoever kills the other squad wins, no research, no campaign type options, just single map games. Although it is not necessary for the second player to own the game, doing so simplifies matters somewhat. However, the first move a host player sends includes extensive files that explain the process to the other player; once a game is enjoined, the process becomes simpler with nothing else being transmitted per turn except for moves and chatter (optional player messages). For same computer play, it is basically essential that players take their alternate turns in privacy before relinquishing the hot seat to their opponent. The game features five major environments: Urban, UFO, Ice, X-COM Base and Alien Base. Each of these has ten scenarios. During each move, a player's forces, depending on their attributes, abilities and weaponry, can choose any of four movement types: move, move and fire, fire or power up. Both Aliens and X-COM Forces have six unique weapons, each with ratings for power, range and shots. On the X-COM side, pistols, rifles, auto-cannons, rocket launchers, flame-throwers and sniper rifles are available. To oppose this firepower, the Alien forces can muster plasma pistols, a claw attack, plasma rifles, blaster launchers, helium-throwers and psionics. To go along with these arsenals, each side features six types of fighters. If playing the X-COM side, you'll direct the actions of rookies, squaddle, sergeants, captains, colonels and commanders. The Alien player will have chrysalids, snakemen, sectopods, mutons, sectoids and an ethereal. First Alien Invasion contains eight positive power ups, ranging from medi-kits to adrenaline boosts, two types of hazardous power ups (mines and traps) and teleporters. The action follows a strict pattern: make your moves, give your orders, transmit. Your orders are then executed onscreen, first seen by the sender and then later by the recipient.
