Ys is a Japanese-origin computer role-playing game series. Ys 1 and 2 were two action rpgs originally released in 1987 and 1988. The Ys series chronicles the adventures of Adol Christin, a red-haired young man with a zest for adventure and an uncanny knack for being in the right place at the right time. Gameplay always revolves around Adol, though his comrade, Dogi, is a frequent companion in the story. Adol is the only truly playable character in the series. One day you encounter a fortuneteller who sends you on a quest to find information about the six books of Ys. It appears that there was once an ancient land called Ys, whose secret was sealed in those six books. Before long you learn that the six books were all stolen by the evil wizard Malificus. It is your task to defeat the villain and to discover the secret of Ys! It has original combat: instead of pressing the "attack" button, you simply run into the enemies you encounter. You do more damage if you run into them from the back or from the sides - a head-to-head collision might result in Adol's death if the monster is stronger than him. You gain gold and experience points for defeating your foes; once you have gained enough experience, you level up and become stronger. You can buy and equip swords, armor, shields, and other accessories. This Windows PC remake features technically superior visuals and soundtrack, as well as more detailed animation (e.g. enemies actually visibly collapse and die rather than blink and disappear). The most significant change in this release is the addition of an entirely new opening area, the town Barbado and its surroundings. Overworld areas have been expanded as well. There are also many more characters and a few additional side quests in this version. Later, there was a compiled re-release, which bumped up Ys Eternal's visuals to Ys II Eternal's level (more color depth, primarily) and made the soundtrack sound more cohesive between the two. This was released as Ys I & II Complete in 2001. They were both fully fan translated from Japanese to English. Later, once this was out of print, Falcom began selling the two separately again, as "Ys I Complete" and "Ys II Complete". Falcom complicated the issue by changing the "Eternal" to "Complete" on all external packaging and advertisements, but not in the actual games themselves. In one of the English patches, the internal bitmaps are edited to reflect the external change for the packages. In 2009, Ys I & II Chronicles was a Japanese PC port of a PSP version based on Ys I & II Complete. When starting a new game, the player can choose between two different game modes, which will display character portraits from the 2001 Windows release, or entirely new portraits created for this release. The soundtrack can be changed at any time during the game, between that of the PC88 release, the 2001 Windows release, or an entirely re-orchestrated soundtrack. In 2013,Ys I & II Chronicles+ came out which was an English Steam release of with adjustable high-resolution PC graphics with a smooth, consistent framerate, a greater viewing area, Steam achievements, and combat receives a full analog-enabled upgrade for gamepad users among other improvements. | ||
