Launch Magazine LAUNCH Media 1995

This is a music magazine issued both in print and as a CD-ROM disk magazine. Eventually the print version was eliminated and subscribers were sent only the CD-ROM version. LAUNCH magazine disks were often found pre-packaged with new PCs in the late 1990s. LAUNCH magazine contained video interviews, live performances, and special video segments by music stars as well as standard (but interactive) music magazine features. LAUNCH Media later introduced LAUNCH.com, the official LAUNCH magazine website. The site featured LAUNCH magazine content, music videos, and, beginning in 1999, LAUNCHcast Internet radio. It included a still-image laden murder mystery spanning one thousand years called "The Cypher" developed by EPG Media over several magazine issues with the last chapter coming in issue #10. A Real Player plug-in was required. The Cypher weaves together three timelines -- the medieval, Victorian and late 20th century. It opens in the summer of 1900 as archeologist James Francis Ravenshim is excavating beneath the ruins of Ravenshim Castle. He discovers a series of hidden chambers containing a puzzling collection of ancient charts, diaries, weapons and mechanical devices that defy comprehension. Ravenshim believes that the answers to who collected them and why lies in a chamber hidden behind a sealed bronze door. Obsessed with the task of deciphering the secret code that can unlock it, he reaches its horrifying climax on the stroke of midnight, Dec. 31, 1999...the Millennium. LAUNCH Media was acquired by Yahoo! for US$12 million in 2001. The features of LAUNCH.com, including the LAUNCHcast Internet Radio service, were later integrated into Yahoo! Music.
